It’s what we have known for years and years about ram. If not for the Cummins dodge would either have been bankrupt or forced to make the rest of the truck better. Hell going back to my first dodge in the 70’s, always had more issues than the other 2.
Great review towing big with the new Silverado 3500. Really was no need to mention the RAM in this video since the two trucks are not in the same class anyway. Kudos admitting that the pin weight was already over specs on the RAM though. Enjoy a more relaxing vacation this year towing without the white knuckles.
It's so entertaining to read the comments of truck guys. Boy you better believe there's only one truck and it's theirs. How about they each have their own positives and negatives? Plenty of content out there of guys complaining about their Ford trucks, Chevy trucks, and Ram trucks. But my choice is the best cause I say it is😂. Very nice new truck you have and a very fair review. Keep up the unbiased good work.
Real world performance with a load is the right content for all of us potential new truck clients. This is the data OEMs don't provide. Hope they value you guys and thus form a long term relationship with you regarding the opportunity to test their platforms for all of us. And it's always cool seeing the father son team in addition to TFL gang and Tim st Pickup Trucks plus
Good to see the first tow guys and congrats. Get yourself a B&W Companion and call it a day. No personal experience with the Crosswing but just looking at that hitch, something doesn’t pass the smell test.
Beautiful truck. A couple things: 1) power convex mirror is not an option for either Ford or GM. That’s a Ram thing only. 2) you’re 100% correct in that these 2020+ GM HDs are rock solid towing. They just are. I think it’s because of their sheer size. A lot of guys in the Facebook groups are towing trailers like yours with 2500s. Maybe that’s pushing it but for example, my 2022 2500 has over 3500 pounds of payload. So it could do it and be within specs. I do think the overload springs you get with a SRW 3500 would be a benefit though.
I tow a Reflection 367BHS with the same set up just a year older, tows fantastic. My only change was adding air bags on the rear, they level the truck out and help smooth out the ride, they were a great improvement. Just a great towing experience with this truck!
I recently went from a 2015 1T ram to a 2024 1T Chevy. I couldn't be happier. There are a few trade offs but over all the Chevy is a far better truck. The biggest reason I switched away from Ram was breakdowns. I averaged 2 per year. Most were covered under warranty. However it left me stranded far too many times. Too soon to say on the Chevy but hoping for 0 breakdowns. Best part of the chevy is how quiet it is. Love not hearing the drone of the engine for hours on end.
@jaymoar3561 True. The power is noticeable much more on the 24. Big reason I went with chevy was the price. A similar equipped Ford was at least 15k more. Some closer to 20k.
No mention of the camera turning on when turning on the turn signal with the trailer hooked up. I have one and pull 37 foot 5th wheel and its rides great and that camera view comming on is a great help on the highway changing lanes or turning corners at intersections. Thanks for the video.
Hey guys I watched your factory tour of your truck - hands down the best factory tour on RU-vid. I have almost the same truck as you, its a GMC 2500 with 3500 frame.springs axles in the same color.Loving the truck keep up the great work. Mike
I had a 2021 GMC 3500 SRW Sierra Denali Diesel 4x4 Longbox (Sister of that Chevy) with a 2021 Grand Design Momentum toyhauler with a GVWR of 16k lbs, the payload capacity on the 3500 was 3825 lbs, it towed that 5th wheel flawlessly, the truck had only about 1 1/2" rear squat loaded, it was a great combination. I also had the Reese 20k Goosebox installed by the dealer with we picked up our RV, made it easy to hook up and I didn't have some big hitch in the bed to deal with. If I only was good at backing a trailer, I'd still have it, my backing skills stunk, we switched to a Class A motorhome after a year. Those trucks are very good for towing for sure!
Correct me if I am wrong, wasn't there a video about the 'new' trailer and the 2500 being overloaded and we the viewers were told to back off and don't worry about the 2500 being overloaded? Also the 2500s payload was 2100lbs? That's half-ton range, that diesel on the 2500 is heavy and with low payload is kinda wasted.
Once you learn the truck/ transmission if you manually select a gear going down a grade to keep the engine around 2,350-2,400 rpm’s that exhaust brake will blow you away!
I watch your video on your new tow vehicle, when you show the the video from front to back while driving, you can see without a doubt through the sliding rear back window the trailer and focus on a cap line of 5 th wheel, that Chevy had that 5th wheel straight and with no movement between the combination at all, my sight line I focused on never moved around, congrats on new setup, and great information video 😎👍
What a beautiful truck. I’m about 10 years older than you, Im guessing… started towing in the 1970’s on the family cattle ranch.. To say pickups have improved is a massive understatement. From my old man perspective, all super duty brands are just amazing in comparison to pickups pre-2005.
Nice truck, trailer combination, been watching since you were at the factory seeing your truck being built, put airbags on your truck to complete the package. Keep the videos coming 👍
As a long time Ram owner, I know have a 24 Chevy 3500 Duramax. Powertrain, the chev wins hands down. I also like the larger cab, frame and bed. I think the Ram wins in interior, gauges, visual information and styling. I sat in a 24 Laramie Night Edition recently and remember how much I loved the interior the Ram and the placement of switches, etc. I'm torn between the two. lol
Have you thought of just using a ball system to make it simple and having the neck of the trailer using the goose ball connection? JB reviews in UT has that setup, I think I mentioned before and man is that simple and clean for the bed.
I’ve been driving Semi for about 30 years now and I can attest to that uneasy feeling of side to side motion. It’s nerve racking! I think if you guys change out to that platform 5th wheel style and put that right over the rear axle or a little bit behind your gonna notice a way more stable ride. Putting the fifth wheel too far back it feels like ur front wheels are barely touching and could end with loss of control. U want to plant that weight. Glad to see that it is a huge improvement over what you had and quiet is good especially when your logging thousands of miles.
Enjoy your new beautiful truck. I use a B&W companion mounted on the center gooseneck and works excellent! My truck is a 2018 Ram 3500 Mega Cab, I tow a 35 fifth wheel that weighs around 9K empty. My payload is 3900 lbs. So, I am so far happy with the 1 ton truck. It only has 48k miles. Your truck looks great! Enjoy it, and come by and visit me in San Antonio Texas!
I have a 2020 Ram 3500 Longhorn long bed w the standard output Cummins but the payload is 4156. My trailer is a Cedar Creek and I’m running about 14000 lbs. I can run 80 mph w no issues but I rarely go over 65 mph just for overall safety. The Ram is not a speed demon but just keeps towing fine. I love the truck you bought but I’d say what does bother me a bit is the payload under 4000. But I know it’s a great truck and I’ll be watching you because I’ll be looking for a new truck in 2025. I think you could go 4 inches behind the axle but 8 is too much. I have an Anderson and I feel nothing even in heavy winds. One time I was driving in 40 mph winds and didn’t even know it till I stopped at a rest stop. Great video! I would love to hook it up to mine because I’m seriously looking at this truck also.
Sounds like your ram 2500 was definitely not the right size truck for your Solitude. Glad you weren’t too harsh on the ram for being undersized for the job. Appreciate the honest review of the Chevy 3500 though! Good video!
Howard You are going to love that truck when You go on tour down south. I love mine, but does have the shorter box. On a critical note, I use My truck for everything, and that includes going to town daily to pick up parts. I find the mirrors to be pretty large, and You really need to be aware of the blind spot they create, when driving in the city. Also, the turning radius, compared to My old single cab Dodge is much larger. Just an FYI for those that are going to use Their HD trucks for daily driving. Other than that, I love this thing. Very comfortable, with everything You could possibly imagine, and power to burn, with a fairly decent MPG.
Similar issue on ram 1/2 tons , guys put a trailer on it and the bumper is on the road , have to install airbags to help. Leaf spring trucks can be overloaded like anything, but much stronger by design . Great video guys ! Truck looks great 👍
I find most of the time, when the bumper is on the road it is because they only counted the tongue weight and forgot to account for the hitch, gear, tonneau cover, bed liner, etc and are actually overweight. Airbags help reduce bounce on the ride, but shouldn’t be use to raise a bed that is already overweight. RAMs have a lower then expected payload due to the coils and steel bed and are easy to overload if you aren’t careful (I had a 2019 RAM 1500)
@@Cloud30000 exactly my point . Heavy duty trucks get overloaded constantly, just as half tons do, I’m not saying it’s ok, I’m saying it happens and when it does, leaf springs are much more forgiving
Try out the Reese goose box. It will eliminate the chucking forward and rearward of the fifth wheel and give you a smoother ride overall. Don’t have to be too concerned on pin angle either when hooking up or detaching. I love these new chevs but they are priced right out to lunch like everyone else. With 15k+ loaded, i personally am driving 105 max anyway. Not just for general safety but some trailer tires aren’t rated for higher speeds. Happy Towing!
This is less about comparing a RAM to a Chevy, and more about comparing a 3/4 ton (which happened to use coils) to a 1 ton; that trailer is too much for most 3/4 tons, coils or not
@@Cloud30000my 13 ram 2500 with leaf springs and air bags handles just fine with a trailer this size. I have a 2021 38’ Montana that is 12.5k unloaded and the trailer does not move much truck around at all.
@cloud30000 my 22 GMC 2500 AT4 had a max tongue weight for 5th wheel of 2775. Payload was 3131. It was perfectly capable of towing Truck King’s Grand Design. Most of the Ram 2500s I had looked at has a Payload of 2000 lbs or less. But that’s cause I was looking in a Laramie or a Limited Model. I now have a 2024 Chevy 3500 LTZ short bed srw and the Payload is 3872 and 5th wheel max tongue weight is 3240. I was close with my Momentum with 2600lb tongue weight. Now I have a 500lb more comfort factor
You should've just had em pull it! Trust me from experience! Every root canal I've had in the past had to be pulled years later. Tooth dies then crumbles in 5-10 years. Just my experience. On another note, badass Bowtie in the video! Lol edit; all 5 of the root canals had to be yanked. Waste of $$$ and inconvenience and pain
@@RonnN-gf8tm costly and painful is right. Every single root canal in my mouth has been yanked probably less than 10 years after the procedure. All mine just crumble to nothing because the tooth just dies after they take the roots. Then after the tooth starts to crumble a couple I waited too long then they had one hellova time getting the rest of the roots out. Just passing on my experience. 5 maybe 6, total. Let em yank em then get a bridge. Better off
So the Ram 2500 was overloaded (payload wise) with the previous trailer? No wonder it wandered. I'm curious the payload of a similar equipped Chevy 2500 and if it has coil springs?
My 2021 Silverado 2500 has a 3100 lb payload as a comparison. It uses leaf springs which I think are more stable when fully loaded/towing but not as comfortable as the coils on a RAM when empty. I will take the stability over comfort!
Why did you opt out of a dually? I noticed you said you were going to do a lot of southern travel while pulling that fifth wheel, is there any particular reason or preference? Also, you were talking about your hitch connection and you were wondering if moving that weight around would help with it's towing. I drive big truck for a living and i can confirm that keeping that weight as close to your rear axle will dramatically improve the way your truck handles no only at the steering wheel, but also as a combination together. Ideally you want to keep your hitch weight directly overtop of your rear axle so good choice with the 8ft bed. The extra wheel base length also helps with road stability. Beautiful rig, thanks for all the info in the video, safe travels!
I test drive this & a platinum F-350 -- & the Ford was definitely less harsh over bumps, but I think it's because their rear leaf packs are just different. Curious what your opinion is between the two?
That is one sweet ride, nice upgrade from the Ram. How would that same 3500 truck with a 6’6” truck box compare with the 8’? Where do you think the differences would be? Keep the vids coming.
Do you guys have a video telling what the difference is between a 5th wheel and tow behind? Curious to know what the big advantages or disadvantages are of each.
5th wheel will always tow nicer Weight is directly above the axle.. Some of us use truck also for work. Myself for example have a canopy on, so 5th wheel is not an option. I got fully deleted LML Sierra Denali HD. This year thinking to get new AT4X
Great truck enjoy it. I have one with 416,000 miles never been to the dealer yet but I’m pretty sure if you would’ve went with ram 3500 it would’ve been pretty close payload and it would’ve done the job by the way, I’m a hard-core GMC guy even though I’m waiting for 2025 ram to see if they’re going to go with Allison transmission. 😜
Just putting this out there. I have been dealing with new 2024 Chevy 2500 HD Duramax LTZ purchase. It stareted at 200 miles new with engine lights and a dashboard light display of errors (major drive train crunch crunch and steering issues) and went into limp mode. This happened a few times. Fast forward, I have a leaking transfer case from the output shaft that has been to the dealer 3 times now. It still leaks. GM rep can careless (assigned after contacting customer service). Dealer calls it residue from repairs following a parts replacement that took 2 weeks to get. I call it BS, as it still leaks today! Now what! Lawyer on deck......Why does it have to be this way!!!
@@KylesRVtoo bad the RAM 2500 is such a weak tower. Pathetic payload and rear suspension. Almost like it's designed to be driven empty. Practically useless.
I’d like to get a new 24 but these interest rates are insane right now. I have a 21 3500 srw high country right now I got 75k miles on it and wanted to trade it in start over fresh but for the same truck I have now I’d be paying almost 500 more a month just because of the rates.. can’t justify it
I was looking at Ford half tons and ended up going with a Chevy because it felt very solid. It was one thing that stood out in my mind. It does make for a bumpy ride going through a neighborhood. But on the highway it's fantastic.
The 2500 dodge is not a good fit for fifth wheel I was told and it seems they were right I have a 2500 HD Silverado and it great for my trailer single wheel 1 ton truck is good for that fifth wheel nice upgrade
Apples to oranges comparison as you stated but thank you for the Chevy intel. I’d be curious how the 2500 Chevy or GMC would do with that trailer and the 3500 frame/towing suspension option???
We actually did test this same trailer with a Chevy 2500 short bed diesel. Handled it pretty well. See that here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-roOFfmo5TYo.html
Great video docs, but not sure comparing a 3500 to a 2500 is fare comparison - price maybe?. Other question - why not upgrade to a dual rear wheel setup for more stability?
Loads of folks ask us about the differences between a 2500 and 3500. So comparing them makes total sense and provides valuable insight for those who haven't driven these trucks before. As for the dual rear wheels, it didn't feel necessary for this setup. We are not at the limits of this truck. Would it be even more stable? Sure. But the inconvenience of driving a dually empty didn't seem worth the extra cost. - Stephen
Went from a 2024 GMC Sierra HD DIESEL, to a 2024 power stroke high out put. The Gmc was amazing, did everything great, except the seats… I traded the truck because of the seats, they killed my back every road trip. Hope you have better luck with your Chevy. But the seats in the ford are supieror
@@Billybob50119 damn right I did. And your talking about a 7% failure rate out of millions of trucks… and it’s fixed for 2024. (Other than the 22’s that had gas fuel pumps installed )all those people had to do was change their fuel filter on time and they would have been fine.
@@Billybob50119 The only fix for cp4 trash is cp3 conversion. However mine still works on 2012 LML deleted duramax. Every time I fuell up I putt diesel additive in.
Another reason why I went with a 21 Chevy 2500 diesel. Payload is way more than the Ram. You were way over weight towing that Solitude with the Ram and reason it towed it like crap. You will love that truck towing.
Hey truck king, curious-why didn’t you just do a SRW long bed 3500 Cummins? I think you’d get air ride for the best suspension setup and you get the multi mode engine brake. I have a Denali Duramax but just a tip try putting it in cruise and using the engine brake. Holds it just right for me.
I have heard others say that the GMC/Chevy seats break in after 40-50k miles. Could the new firmer seats contribute to your ride comfort statement, or did the truck itself just ride firmer than the coil springs Ram? Also, how much is the Ram exhaust brake missed?
@@TruckKing - Trust but verify! I would run it across a C.A.T. truck scale to make sure. I never trust the manufacturer as their numbers (i.e., tongue weight and pin weight) are rarely correct. It's probably closer to 20% to 22% of the GVWR. Let us know what you discover!
Just wondering, do you adjust your tire pressures for the load on the truck? If you don't then perhaps it is worth a try, I don't notice the jittery feeling you described in my GMC 3500.
That would be ideal. We have reached out to Ram about testing a 3500 but haven't had one available to us. If we can get our hands on one, we will make that video. On the other hand, talking about 2500 vs 3500 is very important for folks deciding what to get when it comes to fifth-wheel travel trailer towing. Especially when it comes to pointing out the low payload and coil springs on the Ram. - Stephen
