I really enjoy a variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (Bioshock, The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us etc), strategy/roguelike games (XCOM 2 War of the Chosen, Darkest Dungeon, etc), and RPGs (Dark Souls, Dragon Age, etc). Something I always thought Phoenix Point lacked was the anticipation and music compared to Xcom. The squad reveals and DBZ poses aliens make plus the soundtrack are so much cooler. Phoenix Point always felt empty, just ambience music

I was hoping you would revisit this game, especially with all of the dlc added. It’s been fun thus far however the game could absolutely benefit from some Xcom-styled battle music. Edit after further play: My game has crashed twice during mission-recap and have had to fully replay those missions as there is (apparently?) no autosave during missions, so be sure to save manually every couple of turns.

it's kind of funny watching you compare this game to the xcom games that no longer had gallup developing them. The old x-com games did have a backpack inventory system, in fact, you had belt, pockets, and backpack and it cost different amounts of time units to get stuff from each spot. movement had a flat cost in time units but shots took a percentage.

I think the reason I like Phoenix Point more than Xcom is that solider health is more of a resource than Xcom. You can buy medkits and completely forgo waiting at base. The check to this is adding the stamina gauge which will limit the actions your solider can take.

I don't usually shamelessly plug my channel, but unfortunately most major youtubers seem to ignore this one beyond general overviews and early gameplay. Late game stuff gets really interesting, and I feel bad this game isn't getting the hype it deserves. Anyway, I'm starting a new campaign tomorrow if anyone reading this is interested. I don't care about views or clicks, and I don't monetize in any way. I have a career, house, family, etc. I don't need views or subs, I just love this game and want to see it do well enough for a sequel!

@@TsunamiWombat Hahaha no worries at all. I too am diagnosed with autism! So what other people see as backseat gaming, I just see as someone willing to geek out on my favorite activity and endlessly discuss strategy with me 😂 I cannot even begin to comprehend the amount of time my brother and I spent discussing StarCraft strategies growing up. We'd take turns playing and watching each other, talking each other's ears off suggesting strategies while the other was trying to play. I learned real quick that most kids did not take kindly to that. Early signs my brother and I were a little... different 😁

Have you ever tried the Valkyria Chronicles series? It has an aiming system similar to this, with enemy weak points and a circle of dispersion-but also had an interesting hybrid of real time third person AP based movement, where enemies can take reaction fire, and you can use concealment and cover, aim for weak points etc. Also you get a pretty sweet tank. The tone is pretty…bi-polar I guess? Where it’s extremely goofy and cutesy anime tropes and then all of a sudden it gets really dark, or just kicks you in the gut.

@@anofsti ... then you're going to love it! And considering who made this game that makes a lot of sense. TBH, the missions have gotten better and they've rebalanced them so they're not so easy to cheese or so soul crushingly pointless. All upgrades and tech items still seem to only come in 3 flavors but they each have their niches. Air fights remind me of XCOM 1 with a smidge more strategy. The new class, honestly, looks like a total cop out though. It's just a class that learn any skills. Woo. Still, I'm looking forward to starting a new game with today's patch.

Really impressed how they converted all the gameplay functions into the console gamekeys. But it would be cool to see you return to this game as a new campaign someday (though Im not holding my breathe since there's still your current XCOM 2 campaign and then the Marvel Midnight Suns down the road).

Just bought the game and playing on PS4. Loading are not bad at all! The game is smooth but I did encounter what I would describe as "animation delay". Let's assume I shoot someone, some shots hit. I hear the hit and after all the shots was dealt then and only then the target react by being hit. Or just drop to the floor if it's dead. I had a single time when I moved a Scarab and there was hang time between issuing my movement and the Scarab actually doing something but it wasn't that long and a single time. Took around maybe 10 sec before it reacted. All around, good port. Now flawless but quality enough.

On base PS4 at least it will still need a hotfix or two, but its playable if you dont mind replaying every 3-4 missions due to it crashing at the end and not autosaving during the mission like Xcom. Also Soumd is pretty janked up too.

I think tooltip's can increase the chance of your circle button (ps4) from bugging out. It's very frustrating but I'm sure a patch is coming 🙏

The ammo thing is more akin to the original X-Com games ..you REALLY had to micromanage ammo and accessories, but in a way, it was LESS limiting because you could carry a lot of 'grenades' and similar items.

the reason why you could not blow the wall at 23:25 is because of the cannon you are using. The one that can blow down cover and go through walls is the Hel II Cannon. The trade off is it is only 1 shot.

I started playing this on a PS4 and it runs ok except this odd thing (sorry), that the game doesn't show the damage of hits on the target. It doesn't show the red healthbar being reduced with each hit when shooting at it. This is really annoying since I have to manually click the targets info-screen to make shure, that I hit it at all and see how much damage I dealt. Does anyone else have this problem with the PS4-version and knows how to fix it?

You don't have any covert ops, but you can do scavenging missions for resources and sabotage havens if you want. But that will result in bad relationship with the faction you attacked. Playing this game now. It has changed quite a lot from the time when it released. If anyone wants to know more about the game, feel free to ask, I'll try and help ;)

@@robertdobbs1129 I have completed it with all factions at 100%, even though early on I did steal a couple of aircraft. The hardest part was to stop them killing one another. You can choose to side with whichever faction you want. It can be very profitable to attack faction havens but eventually they will attack your bases back. Ultimately you have to pick one for the endgame. There are 4 sperate endings, 1 per faction and the final one is if you don't take any factions final missions and choose the Phoenix Point ending.

The only thing I like is the overwatch mechanic but overall feels flat especially if you played Xcom for hundreds of hours. Xcom is just something else.

Feels extremely different from XCOM. - The turns feel a bit stiffer given that units don't have idle animations (to support the manual aim?). - Sounds are a bit weaker (like that cannon hitting the wall). - Environmental damage not as satisfying. - Some of the mechanics are more quality-of-life polished. Like the grenade aiming apparently ignoring tiles? Or the ability to move in-between actions. And the passive environmental cover. - The finite ammo in-mission and need to manufacture ammo manually out-of-mission isn't, though :/ - No extraction at end of mission.

The big one is the lack of style. Graphics, animation, sound effects and especially music. XCOM is an experience, it really builds a whole mood. This game is a bit... flat. Dull even. Like they've put together some solid mechanics but it falls down on presentation. Even the enemies in XCOM have personality. In this they're just generic monsters. The map design is pretty poor too.

for the chosen in xcom i had to use 2 medics, 2 techs with sniper rifles and a marine and a sapper. not easy. i know this is a different game but..

Phoenix Point is interesting but I found it extremely frustrating as I was fighting with what the UI was telling me vs what was happening. Example would be grenade arc showing it would get to my target but then hitting a building for example. The game is definitely tailored toward more of a hardcore strategy/tactical audience since there is so much to do and it has a massively steep learning curve so I can see why there would be less viewers on those videos than the more approachable XCOM games.

A mechanic that isn't that well explained is that grenades and missiles don't have a 100% accuracy and the farther you throw them the farther they can miss their target, so throwing them into really tight spots is not a good idea since they can always throw it a bit off and hit something else.

@@MaddieFrankX yeah, that I understood and actually liked but it would be frustrating because nearly every time something would block the grenade it would show as not being able to throw it there but some times there wasn't even though if you zoomed out it was very clear there was an obstruction that the grenade would hit no matter what. I am going to revisit the game again now that I have more time on my hands. Maybe I'll noticed something I missed before now

This is my absolute favorite tactics game, but it's not for everybody. If you prefer depth and experimentation over accessibility, this game is for you. I have 33 DAYS of playtime in it and I still haven't had enough. By contrast I have about 10 days of playtime clocked in xcom 2.

Oh yeah i remember that old playthough, I should watch the rest of it (Don't remember why i stopped). Would be neat to see at least one more run though with all the dlc and stuff, since their was still stuff being added into the game at the time. Maybe a little after your current Xcom run?

i think odd forgot to that disarmed enemies unless have some sort of ability, the enemy will try to flee from the battle. which i would say is bad on early game because kills leads to experience leading to levels and levels leads to better soldiers on sometimes on mid game when your in a bad situation disarming enemies are better than wasting an entire magazine due situation in some mission where enemies are endless

@@LynxStarAuto the gamepass version is just the base game. Season pass is cheap. So if you have game pass and want the dlc just get the season pass. Behemoth edition is game and season pass.

Just finished the prologue last night. Enjoying this game so far. Just need to get through a weekend of work then I can binge on it. I kinda wanna wreck annu but I don't know if it's more beneficial to keep all factions happy. Edit: This game is not worth it on PS4 right now. Crashes and bugs are rampant. Wait a few weeks for patches. Not sure about other platforms or ps5.

Tks for video, so this is/was the ps4 game on ps5 with backcompat mode i guess. I wonder if the upgrade you talk of is up now, ill check it. Im on ps4 and gonna get it, but ill get a ps5 soon, when i find one. One thing i notice, how come when your unit is inside the building, he can throw a grenade over the wall to the outside when there is a roof, even if invisible for a clear view? Looks really interesting, im curious how are the dlcs too, in this full behemoth version. On sale now on psn for 50%.

I've been playing this on console since the day it came to gamepass (planning to buy it with the dlc very soon). I found the UI to be very easy to deal with after a few initial hangups (like accidentally hitting back and ending my turn). I've run into a few bugs, usually related to inputs just ceasing to function properly. It's especially common when revealing an enemy during an unstoppable movement such as jet jump or dash. But overall it's damn fun. I've created the technique I like to call "The scarab shuffle" which enables me to steal aircraft and loot crates very easily.

How's the game running for you? I have this game on PC and wanted to buy the complete edition for Xbox and play there, because I find it to work fantastic with a controller, sadly after downloading it from game Pass constant stuttering, especially while aiming is unbearable.

@@stickydude8921 I'm playing on a 5 year old Xbox One X. The game generally runs alright, though load times are in the minutes usually. I've had a few issues as I mentioned like the input bug. Also found driving a vehicle through breakable terrain causes massive lag spikes. It's definitely not an unplayable mess, but I'd probably hold out for a Series X before buying the complete edition.

I tried the game last year but it felt a bit empty and lacking in atmosphere when compared to X - maybe the music or the cool action movie/camera angles that X2 does quite nicely? Still, there’s been quite some dlc and improvements to phoenix so will give it another shot at some point. Might be cool to do another run after your current X2 run? Did they fix the horrible boss missions where it was basically a flat plane with monsters scattered all over randomly? Did they fix the un-fun lair missions that were either a rush to the objective using jet packs or slog through an endless maze? Did they fix the way enemies adapt to your play style in a way that actually feels relevant? Did they fix the place-holder sound of the queen creature that made me laugh out loud when she went "RooOOooarrrrr"? Did they fix the end level, which seemed like a big place-holder level. I wanted to love this game, but it disappointed me quite a lot. It felt so rushed. There were ideas that never seemed to really be refined or realized. I have only played the initial release, having been unwilling to give it a second chance. I'm wondering, genuinely, if you truly think it is a good game or if you think it still needs more work?

I struggle to find myself wanting to buy/play phoenix point regardless of all it's cool features due to the way shooting and movement and enemy ai and a whole bunch of other things works. I shouldn't have to ask "did that hit?" ever, and a lot of times when i see people play there's no clear indication of hits or damage. It only does 50% of what XCOM does well, and the other half is just unintuitive and feels janky.

I bought the game . Loved it until it started to slow down to crawl (especially when completing research) and then gradually the game be plagued with freezes and then automatically crash when I some how complete a mission. I will try again. Hoping they fixed with a update. Gonna try without festering skies.

What would people recommend for a FIRST EVER playthrough? Which DLC's etc! I used to play the originals on a friends computer as a child (none of us spoke or read English :D), and I remember them fondly! When I played Firaxis' X-COM, I always played Ironman mode simple because that was closest to the game experience I had when playing as a kid :) (gonna get the Behemoth edition, playing on xbox one - sadly not the series X yet)

I encountered a really obnoxious bug where the research tab was permanently greyed out, and couldn't be accessed. Apparently a well know bug. Best way to deal; restart w/ tutorial turned off. Only way to get past it as far as i know. Annoying, but at least i wasn't too far along. Still, miss my initial squad.

it has gotten quite a lot better. Sure there are some stuff they could do better and there is talk of them looking back into some of those. I would recommend trying it again.

How the game plays? Is there any major bugs that need to be patched? If i'm a fan of XCOM 2 will i enjoy this one? How's the learning curve? I've been eyeing this game for a month now but without getting too deep into it. Now that it has released for PS4 i'm considering picking it up

The game is kinda hard, the soldiers a bit generic despite the abilities customization and I wish enemies were more creepy like some of the art.. but what really puts me off is the music man.. if feels like I am playing a ripped/pirated game that has no music files..

I downloaded this and I dont even see the game to choose in my library. It’s like it only downloaded the DLC and not the main game if that makes sense. Weird. Gonna sleep now will check it later.

I barely touched this game on pc due to poor optimization and ui. Definitely going to try it on console, should be better, like almost all games lol.

I'm having a great time but have been having one particular issue quite Frequently. This forces me to close the app and open up again on my ps4. Load times are cringe but honestly I did expect that.

Sadly this is unplayable on PS4 Pro. The controls stop working mid game. I paid $54 and am now waiting for the bug fix. A little disappointed because it looks like fun.

I did a lot of research before I bought the Behemoth edition. There is one important aspect of this game that I wish I knew about before I bought it however. The game doesn't let you invert the y-axis, or the horizontal camera direction. Unfortunately, that's how my brain works. Since I cannot change these settings, it feels like I'm pressing up when I'm trying to press down, etc. It's a bummer everytime I go into aim mode. Also, the camera direction horizontally seems inverted. I'm thinking this may be a deal breaker for me. Everytime I move the camera around I get a pit in my stomach for what might have been. I'm wondering if this is something they can patch. Until then, I can't recommend this game for "inverted y axis" people like myself. It's very frustrating.

I played it on build 3. It kinda killed it for me I have to mustard lots of will power to play it. and thats how I learned never to preorder so early

Got this on xbox one game pass. It crashes (although rarely), very often on a missions start the A button will not respond until you hard reset the console. This also happens on the map and stops you from accepting/deploying on a mission.. once again requires a hard reset. Then theres the spelling mistakes and typos rampant through the game which makes it feel even more unpolished. The loading times are also quite long although I could live with that if the bugs were sorted. Really good game but cant enjoy it having to reset the console constantly.

early enemies in phoenix point are mostly melee I think. Some enemies have rifles as part of their body

As you progress, new enemies appear and old ones mutate and adapt. The crab like Arthrons get thicker and thicker armour, organic machine guns of various types, organic grenade launchers, acid spit etc. Tritons, the fishy ones start with pistols but eventually get sniper rifles. They gain abilities such as regeneration, seeing through stealth, invisibility etc. All mutations make visual changes to their appearance. There are many types including psionic ones and the biggest bosses are HUGE. You also fight humans, cyborgs, humans mutated with Pandorans as well as ancient technological creatures. The combat gets much tougher and you fight a lot of mobs at once.
