Salt has been used since the beginning of our history. Did you know that in ancient Rome, soldiers were rewarded with salt by the empire? Because of this, the monthly receipt of our work is known as "salary" nowadays.
Let's visit the salt factory in Australia. Its extraction is made from the waters of the ocean. It takes up to a year for the water to evaporate and only the sodium chloride or salt remains.
Big trucks carry the pieces of salt and take them to the plant.
The first washing is carried out at the plant. This washing is done with the treated sea water itself, because if they used potable water, the salt would be dissolved and lost. In this wash, calcium and magnesium are added, as they had been lost in evaporation.
After being cleaned, the salt is stored in the open and left for an entire year. During this period, rainwater continues to do the cleaning work. But why is there no problem washing with potable water in this part of the process?
The explanation is that magnesium dissolves more easily than sodium chloride. Just as the rainwater hits the mound, the magnesium is dissolved first and washed away, leaving the salt behind.
After 1 year, the salt is transported to the refinery, where it undergoes another wash. Washing is done again with treated sea water.
This is where leftover minerals and dirt are disposed of.
Continuing, the salt is poured into a cylindrical dryer. This equipment is known as a rotary drying oven, and it is heated with gas.
As the cylinder rotates, the salt is dried and flows out.
The salt is crushed into smaller particles on stainless steel rollers.
The same salt is passed through screens that act as filters, where only the correct size of particles remains in the process.
Different rollers and screens are used for different particle sizes.
There are different measures of salt for different uses. For example, for the manufacture of cheese or even chocolate, the salt must be very fine. For pools with saline water, larger pieces are more efficient.
Finally, the ready salt is conveyed by conveyor belts until it is packaged.
