"Hell" is usually considered to be a mild swear word if used in a non-literal way, at least in North America. That said, "you're going straight to hell" is a pretty harsh statement for a character to say in a kids' game, especially considering how many instances of the word were removed! On a related note, I find it hilarious that they weren't able to fix the lip-syncing in the opening cutscene after changing the dialogue!

@MageBurger You say that but there are some games that look amazing while running in real-time on PS2. MGS3 for example blows just about any other PS2 game out of the water in terms of graphics and details. Even MGS2 which came out a full 3 years before that looks pretty amazing. The Final Fantasy X games also look damn good for the time, and Kingdom Hearts 2, while not looking as realistic also pulls off some amazing quality animations. And all of these games released before Shadow the Hedgehog, so they certainly could have stepped the games graphics up and made it look much nicer, though my assumption is that the literal 300+ paths took up a majority of the disc space.

From the same game... *Developer 1:* "We need a voice clip of Knuckles sounding exasperated, but we don't want to record a new line. What should we use?" *Developer 2:* "How about the voice clip of Knuckles saying, "Damn..."?" *Developer 1:* "Brilliant!"
Hahaha. Yeah. In fairness, Sonic swore a couple times in English on the Japanese version of Sonic X. (Shit in Episode 2 and Damn it in Episode 69, and there's one more but I can't remember where).
Is he really swearing by Japanese standards, or is he saying something more along the lines of the far-less-explicit "crap"? I highly doubt the Japanese writers of the show would just casually throw in a word they consider to be as offensive as a very explicit swear in English.
Agustin Leguiza Not really since most of the routes don't even make sense since they use a much smaller amount of cutscenes. The neutral one, for example, has a scene with the president which is never followed up on again
The thing most people gloss over is that a playthrough of Shadow the Hedgehog takes 6 stages. A playthrough of Sonic Heroes takes 14 stages. A 6 stage play through of Shadow the Hedgehog takes 2 or 3 hours once you know how to complete the missions. A playthrough of Sonic heroes takes all day and feels a lot more exhausting because you're going through the same levels. I appreciate the opportunity to change up the levels you go through in each playthrough in STH. It shakes up repetition big time. Especially since you don't have to complete the same missions on every playthrough. You gotta admit that Shadow the Hedgehog at least has more variety then Sonic Heros.
@@stantorren4400 He probably refers to the "ow the edge" jokes fans do all the time. Since they aimed for an E10+ rating, a lot of the violence and cursing ended up feeling forced. Like stuff only an actual kid would find to be too much.
In the end, Vector never found the computer room, and Shadow never found that *DAMN* fourth Chaos Emerald. EDIT: Coming back 9 months later, I never thought I'd get this many likes. Nice.
In one sequence of the game, Shadow told Eggman that Eggman was "going straight to hell." The commander uses the word as well, so removing "hell" was unnecessary.
I’m sorta actually pretty disappointed how they were going for a T rating but instead got a E10+ rating crushing all the things that Sonic Team and Blur had made for this game.
Assuming the same director is still working on Sonic games. They could still remake the game for a modern console like Switch, and have all these scenes put back in the game.
I honestly think they should just do a whole collection of older Sonic games but polished up. Think about how they could fix Sonic '06 for example. And then, they could also improve upon the ones people generally seem to like such as the Adventure games. If I had to pick, I'd say it'd be nice to have Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Heroes, and to top it off, Sonic '06. They could just make the games as they would if they had no time limit to finish them. I have noticed Sonic games always seem to have this problem. It is ironic, a game about speed is hindered by deadlines.
Also notice how the audio was changed during Maria's death to be much less dramatic. This game was honestly quite stupid but my edgy as fuck 8 year old self liked it. It had guns and swearing when I wasn't allowed to play mature rated games so of course I liked it lol. It didn't take very many years later though to realize it's quite a flawed little game and a really dumb premise. If you like it then more power to you though.
Fun Fact: Even though guns are a big part of the game, they're almost completely optional. The Spin Dash and the Homing Attack are in the game, and at times, more reliable than the weapons you find. You can play through the almost the entire game, and not fire a single bullet.
Teen rating: Swearing - good, Guns - good, Death - good Yeah that seems about right. Everyone 10+: Swearing - meh, Guns - good, Death - oh hell no. Something here don't seem quite right...
It still boggles my mind that this game is one of the best examples of branching narratives in video games. I can only think of like 3 other games that do player choice well.
That first scene in the opening of the guy getting shot didn't show any graphic content. This game should have ended up T for teens. In fact I think the T rated version did get sold some copies, because I swear I remember playing the game at a friend's house once and seeing a T rating on the game's box. I may be mistaken, but that didn't look like red blood in the original. It was glowing more like red sparks, much like in any decent scifi game laser hits make sparks.
@@jeremyriley1238 (Sarcastically) Yeah, with games like Forces with the fluffy-wuffy war style tone, the friendly playful violent content, and the totally harmless baby's story of Eggman THE VILLAIN WINNING FOR ONCE (!) Good going, mate, GOOD GOING (!)
@@jeremyriley1238 Also, if you're referring to what Sega said around 2010, that was in an article, and article always lie about, tweak, exaggerate, or flat-out make up stories just to earn as high a profit as possible. As the old sayings go "We lie, you buy" "honesty makes a poor man".
@@jeremyriley1238 Actually they were willing to go with T for Teens to start with. They could have made it E to start with by cutting a lot of stuff. So they do recognize that they needed to age-up the content of the game to attract an older audience.
Sonic Gamer yep it's the norm nowadays to buy rated m games for kids cause parents aren't so sensitive about guns or being edgy unlike the good old days
I didn't know this game existed until like 2 months ago and i was really impressed with the story and the multiple path thing(which i REALLY liked) and i had SO MUCH fun playing it and things like facing Sonic as final boss if you're pure evil is awesome, fast forward to 1 month later i find out everyone in the internet hates this game :/
There's a line in the retail release of Shadow the Hedgehog where Sonic says, "Hate to tick off G.U.N." Apparently, back when it was aiming for a T rating, the line was "Hate to piss off G.U.N."
@@jdniscool I'm with u, man. Darkness and edginess proves that Sonic is for adults as well as children. The Sonic is in serious need of dark tones. After all, from day one, Sonic The Hedgehog was meant to be the dark edgy version of Super Mario.
@@jdniscool Well the "dark" games like shadow the heghehog have no rock solid gameplay. The slippery controls, repetitive missions, the tedious way of unlocking the ending, making you play westopolis 326 times to get the true ending btw, and FIND THE COMPUTER ROOM, makes this dark game not good. Sorry, it has many flaws
"Catering to the brand" limits creativity in so many annoying ways. It's this reason why we may never get an M rated Zelda game, or a modern FF game with no sci-fi, or an aesthetically original Call of Duty game. A franchise being allowed to experiment can sometimes create crappy games, but it will always create memorable experiences.
I'd definitely buy it if it was rated T. Because we know Shadow swears, we know he's seen a lot with Maria dying. I'd love to have a Shadow the Hedgehog game with blood, swearing, and guns. The art for the game is phenomenal, too. 😊 5/10 = 10+ Rating 11/10 = T Rating
It'd be funny if Shadow the Hedgehog had words like "shit", "ass", "bitch", "piss", "dick", and/or "tits" in it. It probably only had "damn" (and still has that word), "hell" (as mentioned in the video), and "piss" (I haven't seen the proof for this, but I've heard Sonic was originally going to say that he'd "hate to piss off GUN", but that it was changed to "tick" in the final version) in it though.
I know this'll be an unpopular opinion, but I don't believe developmental changes count as "censorship". Games go through changes during development all the time before the final product is decided on. Most of the changes are stuff that we, the public, are not privy to.
Care to elaborate? Let's say a particular game comes with an artbook. In that artbook, it will usually contain concept art and early sketches for the characters. The final designs for the characters will almost always be different, since they will go through numerous revisions before a final design is decided on. Would you consider all of that censorship as well? Like I said, games go through changes during development all the time before the final revision. I think it's a bit of a stretch to call all of that censorship, IMHO. Or are you suggesting that devs are not allowed make changes to games during development at all? That sounds kinda draconian.
By that definition, then you can label any kind of changes made to a game during development as censorship, which I think is not very useful when discussing censorship. All games have concept art, and all concept art will inevitably go through some changes before the final design is released. At that point, where do you draw the line between "censorship" and just normal development? For example, one of the concept art for Zelda in Skyward Sword had her wearing a blue dress, as revealed in Hyrule Historia. However, her final design has her wearing a pink dress. Is that censorship, or is it simply development?
I care to elaborate as well Censorship is when something is changed to make it more appropriate for younger audiences. a development change is something that is changed because it makes it look better or play better.
On a completely unrelated note 2:04 I was looking EVERYWHERE for that animated rabbit for a LONG TIME. I first found it on google images and thought it was so adorable I had to look for where it came from. So thank you, thank you THAAAAAAANK YOU so much for helping me find the source.
I feel like this game would have been a lot better if they kept in the violence and swearing. Maybe Sonic wouldnt have gone down the tubes if they didnt try for an E10
Do you think it really would have affected the game itself? The changes look pretty minor, really. Plus, the target audience was obviously quite young, so those with parents who read the rating on the box would have been less likely to get the game. The game has much bigger problems than a bit of green blood.
I remember really enjoying this game as a kid. I actually beat all of it and didn't really mind the length cause I didn't have many other games to play. I went back to it recently and I still really had fun with it. don't get what the whole controls complaint is all about cause I cant imagine playing it any other way.
The tone of the game clashes HORRIBLY with a character who not only looks like Felix the Cat, but also possesses a monoeye. It's the monoeye part where I draw the line. Serious (dark & edgy) stories and THAT are incompatible.
I just hope one day they make a remake of Shadow the Hedgehog where it will really be rated T. SEGA either joins with Naughty Dog or Square Enix to make this game great for how it was supposed to be.
Shadow the Hedgehog is such an odd game. The gameplay itself is ambitious because of the morality system with very diverse endings, but it's not executed very well like most Sonic 3D games. The visuals, characters, setting and music are all trying so hard to be edgy that it ends up being laughable, but at the same time, it's all very charming in a strange way. It reads like a 10-year old's fanfiction and you can't help but think how cute their attempt is. :3 I still hold nostalgic views for this game, but I won't let it cloud how mediocre it is in terms of quality.
I wish for another Spin-off game based on one of Sonic's Friends. AND WAIT, GENESIS-ERA FANS! There were games based on Sonic's Friends - Tails Adventure and Knuckles Chaotix. Sonic has SOOOO MUCH characters that we need to stop Sonic-centered games for a while and get some spin-off based on other characters. AND DON'T YOU DARE saying that those games were shit because they weren't played like sonic... BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ABOUT SONIC! It's a good thing!
I forget the exact source, but I remember reading that one of Sonic's lines was cut from the game. The website mentioned that Sonic would originally say "Better not piss off GUN" if Shadowed attacks one of the soilders.
I was 10 year old in 2005 and this was my first console game on the game cube and well that mite be why shadow the hedgehog is my favorite child hood video game I still play it to this day it’s kinda a tradition for me to play the cryptic castle level on Halloween
My sister and I used to play this together. There's actually multiplayer in story mode if you pick up another controller and play as one of the characters shadow partners with. (I don't think you can be the alien guy).
