It's called dry cleaners because they use special chemicals, but no water is present in those chemicals making them dry according to chemistry.
@michaelsuk6440
@michaelsuk6440 11 месяцев назад
Dress shirts are laundered. Dry cleaning would be ok too, but not necessary, unless it’s silk, linen, or rayon, which all lose strength in water. Cotton is the exception, as it becomes stronger when wet, therefore it is laundered and pressed on a machine like this. LSR shirts (Linen Silk Rayon) cost more to clean because they are typically hand ironed after dry cleaning, and can’t be put on a press, which would shrink/destroy them. Women’s blouses don’t fit on a press (designed for men’s shirts only) and have to be hand ironed, therefore more labor and more cost. Former dry cleaner with 15 years of experience.

I used to work at a dry cleaners. This one is way fancier than most places could afford for one, and for two, it's also way slower. At my old place of work, my coworker could've done 5 shirts in the time he took to do 2, on an older machine with less features, held together with home repairs.
@SP-io7lj
@SP-io7lj 8 месяцев назад
LOL! - Yeah, but your coworker needs to stop and eat! That machine doesn't!
@mikalamcgowan
@mikalamcgowan 8 месяцев назад
@SP-io7lj no, someone still needs to load the shirts on the machine, so the machine *does* stop for lunch when the worker does. Besides, I think you might have misread my comment. We had a machine that was faster than this one even though it was older and much less fancy.

@mikalamcgowan
@mikalamcgowan 7 месяцев назад
@Simone-zb2bk I do believe that it would be equal or greater in quality, yes. Quality is generally a function of how much someone cares, not what tools they have. Tools can certainly help, don't get me wrong. But if someone doesn't care and has good tools, the product will still be inferior. And if someone cares a lot and has crappy tools, they will work until the product is satisfactory.

Most, if not all, shirt pressing bucks don't blow out the shirt with steam, the shirt is inflated with air, then two plates sandwich the inflated shirt. The plates are heated with steam and they do the pressing. That's why sometimes you get wrinkles in the pocket or near the collar. This is very hard on the shirt and they won't last as long as they would if you washed them, let them air dry, and then ironed them yourself.

Do not take your dress shirts to the dry cleaners. This kind of processing destroys the buttons within 3 washes, leaving them brittle and broken. And the material is so over heated that it shrinks significantly at each wash. Never never ruin your shirts this way.

@michaelsuk6440
@michaelsuk6440 11 месяцев назад
Shirt presses use 160 psi. Cheap, plastic buttons aren’t made for that. Choose a dry cleaner that charges more. They offer button replacement as a courtesy. It’s a fact that all of the equipment in the industry is hard on clothes. Good dry cleaners/launderers charge more for touch-ups and button replacements that are on-the-house. Pay less get less. Pay more get more. It’s a fact of business. For example: if you live in CA and pay 5.00 for a pressed shirt and broken buttons, then that’s the worst service. If you pay 7.50 a shirt but have all buttons intact, you’re going to the right place. Inflation, inflation, inflation. I remember when you could get full-service in MN for 3.50 a shirt. Those days are long gone. Former dry cleaner with 15+ years of experience.

Daily reminder we already invented long ago textiles that don’t need to be ironed, but humans specifically find them “not formal” exactly because they don’t need to be ironed. As in, the difficulty is the point. It’s like how we can literally make diamonds in a lab but people go “nah it’s the children suffering in mines that makes it special”, but worse - it’s me having to iron my shirt
