Does a “good” or “appropriate” response even exist to this statement??

I feel this. Also people need to stop shaming girls who are skinny with assumptions that they always diet and work out to an unhealthy extent. My family calls me a twig, in high school people called me anorexic (which is just sooo disrespectful to people with actual EDs). People shouldn't be made to feel bad about their body regardless of where they stand on the spectrum between thin and large. Just stop commenting on anyone's body, done.

I know some people who eat constantly, yet they are skinny . Lucky to have a good metabolism. I also know some people who eat a little, yet they are overweight because of stresses, slow metabolism, and medications that they are taking . Overall, obsession with the body image is a brainwash . Keeps people not to think about really things that matter in this life .

I grew up being constantly reminded that I am tall, growing so fast, etc. I took it as an honest observation, and I recommend other people default to the same.

My response is always could you please ask me how am I feeling or how am I doing? No awkwardness as I am putting what I would like to be asked and putting myself first rather than what they would like to ask me 😊 If a person becomes a closer friend then I tell them how weight questions are triggering for me.

You are what you are . One's s figure depends on your socioeconomic status , as such your ability to eat right and pay to go to a fitness club. Also depends on your health . Don't judge book by it's cover. Judge person by one's action. That defines personality more then anything else.

mines is : THEM: Your Skinny, or Your So Small You Need To Gain Some Weight ME: Maybe You Need To Lose Some hmph.... Shut Them Down Every Time dealt with this my whole life, so i don't really care how i respond, because i find it rude to tell a person that they are to skinny or need to gain some weight like just say i look good other then that you trying to test my patience, that's like telling a fat person you need to lose some weight its a insult. So my responses are always rude or i laugh lol like you did that's why i was screaming on that part lol because its so true sometimes you gotta just smile & laugh at the question

As someone who I think is considered to be skinny and tiny (I am also very short so tiny for me takes on a whole knew meaning. I never know how to respond to the "you are so short!" comments either. Like it that supposed to be a good thing?) but I was also told by family that I "needed to suck it in" so yeah I probably have some body dismorphia. But I also have other health issues and so me being skinny is a result of trying to keep those things under control. I wonder if maybe something you could still say is "Thanks, I've been trying to get into a regular workout routine." because even though you may be perceived as skinny, you still have health goals that you are working to meet. That is kind of a deflection from commenting on looks and into more health and fitness related. That is not someone who is sounding like they are bragging and also gives that other person and you something else to discuss that could be more constructive. Not sure if that is any better. At the end of the day these kind of comments tend to boil down to appearance and so maybe make it the same way you would respond to "you're so pretty." Or something.

I don't think anyone tries to shame anyone. I think they are trying to figure out how they do it, if anything. I'm the skinny one in my family and it is very easy to see how one eats is that makes the difference. I wish I could make it simple since eating is such an ingrained habit of what foods you chose. But one thing I notice is I don't drink my calories. If I am thirsty I drink water. I drink so much water that I got a kitchen sink filter instead of the trash and waste of buying plastic bottles. I don't drink apple, orange or any type of fruit juice. I don't drink soda or milk. I get my calcium from plain/lowfat yogurt, salmon bones, calcium/magnesium/D3 supplements. I drink black coffee and unsweetened tea. All in this paragraph is a HUGE calorie saver. The other thing I do eat a lot sometimes but I noticed they are not calorie dense foods. One example, for some reason I don't like the bread of hamburgers. To me it tastes like paper. So I don't add bread to the burgers I make, just the onion, pickle and lettuce. That's it. Oh, and I ate chocolate cake for breakfast this morning, I was craving it. But I realized the portion I took was about 280 calories, and I was satiated after that. With my coffee. I did have 20 ounces of water when I got up, but that's because I know our bodies are dehydrated in the morning so I drink water first, wait for my SECOND urination, THEN I eat. Okay, done.

I'm a loose interpretation of a woman, I'm like dressing the old school paper dolls, I'm human version of hangman... These are things I say about myself. I put on a size small dress at Walmart that a lady thought would look nice on me (the reference a size small at Walmart is a 4-6) I stepped into this dress through the neck hole. She laughed it was funny it was not my size. I am also 41, and have been this size since I lost 60 lb in high school. I'm now 95lbs, I'm toned with lost of muscle. I'm not the lanky kind of thin you tend to see. Doesn't change the fact that I'm called a crackhead at least once a month still I have learned to combat with snark and sarcasm does it work for me yes call me a crackhead I will tell you "it was never my preference", or "who can afford crack these days". I love all woman, the difference in our body's is what makes us unique. I tell people if your comfortable in your own skin (thank you autofill this is how often I say this) what others think is just that, a thought. Body shaming sucks being morbidly obese is not safe for your body wanting to change your body is fine and putting the work in and doing it is hard but I think now our culture is learning that shaming a person does not help them change and I am an emotional eater I just learned to eat healthier things and to make myself step away because I will make myself sick with food sometimes. Be who you are but be healthy

One reason to be careful commenting on someone’s weight is that you never know the cause of it. I’ve lost unhealthy amounts of weight twice due to depression and bad anxiety. It wasn’t intentional. I wasn’t intentionally anorexic, but once I realized how much weight and muscle I’d lost, I wouldn’t have appreciated anyone commenting, except my doctors, because I knew it wasn’t good. Also, I made the mistake of complimenting someone on weight loss and later found out it was caused by cancer.

Watch out on the second response with fitness goals. I commented on a fashion influencer losing weighting after having kid..probably mention their name you would know...I said along the lines of "You wouldn't known she had a kid. What's your secret?" Well she consider that misogynistic to even mention that. That we are all equal...no matter the size. wow. some people.

Coming from someone who has struggled with their weight all their life and been called Rubenesque, zaftig, stout and pudgy...If it seems someone is trying to compliment you on your figure, just say "Thank you" or "Thank you for the compliment" and then drop or change the subject. When someone says I'm less than perfect I tend to ignore them. Yes, I even ignored my mother when she said I was getting fat. And I never say anything about my child's weight. Ever.

Depends if they said it with attitude or as a compliment. If they wanna know how I eat for themselves to lose weight, I'd be happy to answer but it would be better to say "I want to lose weight, how do you eat to stay slim?" than "you're so skinny!".

For someone who became a shell of herself trying to not offend anyone, I decided I’m going to say whatever I want, instead of nothing ever, because I know everything I say comes from a good place. I’ve lost a lot of weight and it was hard… I LOVE when people notice and give me props. :)

This video is ridiculous. If you are skinny and somebody states that fact, why should it cause you to get mad? Don't be a snowflake. If it really bothers you, gain weight. Plus being skinny is actually good! That's like being beautiful and getting mad because somebody said you are pretty. Anything can be twisted into being insulting to somebody so where does the censorship end? I'm offended by not being able to be honest. If you are a smoker, a blonde, a person with blue eyes, have cancer, have a mole in your face, etc. don't get offended when people mention it. A good answer: 'good observation'.
