@@Homer-OJ-Simpson the kicking of Singapore out of Malaysia, the main reason for it was demography, Singapore was (and is) majority Chinese and if included within Malaysia it would disrupt the Malays as the majority ethnicity, and make Chinese the plurality in Malaysia, and having a Chinese party as the PAP win the elections in Malaysia would be unthinkable for the Malay establishment, so Singapore was kicked out of Malaysia.

Gibraltar is another self contained city state. It's self contained, has it's own industries, governs itself and is *functionally independent* as the UK has no power to interfere in its affairs. (It can't ever be technically independent because a 310 year old treaty says if the UK gives up sovereignty then Gib goes to Spain.)

So my point that Gibraltar is *functionally* indepemdant still stands. It would be simpler for everyone if Gibraltar was formally independent, but that can never happen while Spain refuses to alter the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht.

We need to go back way before 1965. Beginning from 19th century, when the British started to increase their economic and political influence in the region, Singapore was envisioned to become the economic hub of Malaya. However, interestingly despite that, Malaya and Singapore were governed as separate political entities. I remember someone said that Singapore was Malaya's own version of New York. Back in the day, if you were to visit Malaya, Singapore was the main gateway. After WWII, Malaya gained independence in 1957, but Singapore was still a British colony. Lee Kuan Yew was desirous to free Singapore from British control and pursued a political and economic union with Malaya. The rest is history...

Malaysia banned exports of chickens to Singapore in order to control supply and prices (as they say). Some people there think Singapore deserves it since we did not allocate enough land for agriculture and always rely on import. More countries has adapted protectionist approach nowadays... Singapore might be facing a hard time.

2:51 The CDCs' boundaries follow electoral constituencies' boundaries, which change before every election, so their names can get misleading sometimes & the districts' shape can get distorted e.g. the light orange panhandle of South East district/CDC is the north-eastern inland suburb of Serangoon, which is somehow classified under the southeastern coastal Marine Parade constituency (whose boundaries also span across the other suburbs of Aljunied, Ubi & even Bedok N (before 2011)). You can also imagine how many times our public housing apartments' lifts, which're maintained by town councils (who follow such boundaries too), are handed over between different councils in their lifetime of 20-30 yrs.

Huh. How Singapore has handled food imports seems pretty safe. I can see a diversified basket of countries Singapore gets its imports from, so when one country experiences tension, there are still others to rely on. Singapore has also stayed neutral, so it doesn't piss off other countries and thus jeopardizing its food supply when it gets cut off.

As nice as SG sounds, it still has flaws, a 5 room HDB in Singapore can buy u a landed house and a decent car in USA/Australia etc etc. Education there is competitive, to the point unless if ur going to ivy leagues. Going overseas is a negative thing because it shows u cnnt make it in SG. We overwork ourselves insanely. I been to overseas for holiday in 2022 and ngl the difference in culture and laid back approach in australia was light and day

The stress and pace of Singapore is no different from most major cities though and they are just about as expensive. But you can live pretty decently in Singapore however with lots of grants, subsidies and help from the authorities, if you are financially unstable. If you surround yourself with only top high flyers and consistently think your worth in this world is through your paper merits and other material assets, then that is the only world you know of. Not all Singaporeans are like that, in fact, most Singaporeans are laid back and chill. Not wealthy but not needing for anything.

This 10-minute video only answers the question in mere seconds, and very very superficially. At least elaborate on the 4 main sources of water, instead of just describing it in seconds. Our water source from Malaysia is not even the main source today, and will end completely by 2061. Even then, Singapore is already almost self-sufficient in water supply if Malaysia decides to cut all water exports today. For food supplies, you could have provided info on the ratio of food imports, and more details on Singapore trying to grow more food locally. In fact, Singapore aims to have 30% of our nutritional needs coming from local farms by 2030.

But Singapore has weakness...... One, there are still no production for smartphone and vehicle until now which is no Made in Singapore in technology production..... @@kfcwarrior8242 1. Singapore is a multi-cultural society. Not merely a Chinese one. English is naturally used as the lingua franca to unite a multi-cultural society together. 2. Walking through downtown Singapore is no different from doing the same through HK or Taipei or Shanghai. All are modern East Asian societies, except that the dominant tongue may be different. So are you going to call every modernised society a victim of "cultural imperialism"?

Had a nice conversation with a Malaysian guy on the train the other day. Asked him how he and his country feel about Singapore in the aspect of first wanting it out of Malaysia and now it does so great. What was once a nice conversation immediately stopped with an unfriendly look and we have not talked since. I didn't ask to offend anyone, just simply to get a local perspective on a topic I was pretty interested in at that moment. Or was it just rude of me to ask that?

It's complicated. Most Malay still don't know why Tunku Abdul Rahman kicked out Singapore. But, Tunku does in one of his interviews said about creating Malaysia without Singapore because this two reasons : 1) He only wanted Brunei, Sabah & Sarawak join this federation, to balance Bumiputera and Non-Bumiputera population during that time. Adding Singapore in the federation only bring the problem back to square one. 2) Prevent the spread of Communism from Indonesia and Malayan Communist Party on Borneo. But his vision of Malaysia get interrupted with British insisted Singapore to be include in the new federation. Alas, the Federation merged but Singapore ousted in just 24 months due to consequences of racial riots and Bumiputera policies issue. To most Malays at that time, losing Singapore is like gaining a long lost jewel from a crook, only to be slipped back into abyss. But to Malayan elites especially those resides in Kuala Lumpur, the separation is a good move for their own political stability though it only postpone racial riots in Kuala Lumpur untill 1969.

Singapore does have diplomatic relations with China and many other countries but that does not mean China is a close ally . Singapore is a closer friend to Australia than it is China .

Not exactly. It all depends on which sector. Economically, China is an invaluable partner as compared to Australia. Food supplies wise, it’s diversified all over the global. Military wise, Australia is a valued partner as compared to China, as Singapore has sent her boys to train in the terrains of Australia for decades.

Singapore is a ultra rich country.... Sg people waste a lot of food, about 800m tons of food waste per annum. Do you think Singapore people can be starve to dead!!!? Food are very expensive in Sg. It is one of the reason that Sg can buy cheap food from other countries, because a lot of countries can sell their food high price than their local people. Good example, Sg can eat the best Malaysia durians and the local Malaysia can't eat it, because all good quality durians export to Sg to make a fat profit. Singapore currencies are very strong too which can buy food easily. Sg people love to travel Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia to shop, eat and massage. Strong currencies can buy their local cheap food, eat and throw....no need to think one.

Singapore food is very expensive only to people from our neighbouring countries. We are comparable to HK, Japan or South Korea, and cheap compared to Europe. In fact, there are not many developed countries which still sell hawker food at our price point....try finding a full meal costing less than 4 Euros in Europe.

@@MrAlbertYam Singapore's GDP per capita is 3rd highest in the world, and higher than most European countries, so of course we should be compared to Europe, not some neighbouring country with just a fraction of our salaries and costs of living. The vast majority of Singaporeans are actually in the middle-income bracket (including myself). Just about anyone who has at least a diploma and earn more than 3-4k a month has every ability to travel to Europe each year if they want to. In fact, some of my friends with lower qualifications and earning less than 3k have been to Europe too at least once. It makes me wonder if you are even local to be complaining that hawker food is expensive (I was not even talking about food courts) here, or how expensive Europe is.

@@MrAlbertYam and the quality of your comments reflects it. No one said every local is rich or average. I said the *vast majority* are in the middle-income bracket. And there are statistics to back this up. The medium income in Singapore is S$3,027. Only 6.2% of Singaporean households qualify to buy 1-2 room flats. And don't assume I have never seen the local poor or have not helped them in one way or another. I don't need to advertise what I do to help. Ultimately, you clearly do not represent the majority of Singaporeans who do not consider Singapore food expensive. And that is the whole point of this conversation.
