Slash is the coolest mother F’er to ever walk the planet he’s phrasing ,amount of feel and emotion in his playing is just the paramount , the only problem I have is when I hear him him play ,I don’t if I should pick my guitar up or just put it down , kudos on a great video about a right handed genius
Just when I thought your channel couldn’t get any better, a slash lesson!! Loved hearing that you’re a huge GnR fan - I am too (slash is why I’ve been playing guitar for ~7 years). Thanks for the great lesson man. Also that’s an awesome guitar!
Great video! Would you consider doing a video on how to get certain sounds/voices from the guitar? I'm not talking about specific gear recommendations, but more just what sort of approximate settings we need to use to get our guitar to sound like (for example) Slash, or whoever... At the moment, I pretty much just cycle through Garageband looking for cool voices, but if you could explain the various settings (Gain, Treble, Bass, etc) and how they work so we could kind of figure it out for ourselves?
Great suggestion John! For Slash's sound I'd recommend lots of Mid and Treble, and cutting a considerable amount of bass like so: Gain, Treble & Mid - 7.5 Bass - 3 I'll be sure to do an in depth video on this in the future :)
For the pattern at 2:20, we'll take A minor scale for simplicity. We basically have the following scales: A minor natural: A B C D E F G A A minor pentatonic: A C D E G A A minor blues scale: A C D Eb E G A So, for the Slash's scale, we play the following notes: A B C D Eb E F# G A. Hope you can clarify it for me. Thank you.
The notes you listed are correct if you transposed the scale from F# to A minor. But it’s not so much a variation on the natural minor scale, as it is the Dorian mode, since it would include an F# instead of F. So it’s really just the Dorian scale with a b5 added in. (There may be a name for that scale, but if so, I’m not aware of it.)
It's the only thing and then you got it. Knowing what your talking about. And there you go. You got it. Major things you need to know are in this video to get the hang of music all guitar stuff about it.
Im a Slash fan as well and Ive went through videos of his playing but ONLY YOU have totally nailed the style of the Man with the Top Hat. You showed a variation of the minor pentatonic scale which helped me tons in my improvisation for guitar lines. SUBSCRIBED!
Not the first time I watched thus video. I am, just like you a all time gnr fanboy. Slash is the reason I picked up the guitar 22years ago. As a big fan I can say you really did a amazing job! Thanks ross! I will buy your course in the near future! Your teaching is amazing! I hope to understand more about theory and explore new fretboard knowledge.
I was a junior in HS when Appetite For Destruction came out and needless to say I was a HUGE fan. I literally had a shrine for Guns N’ Roses in my room and have Slash’s skull from the cover tattooed on my arm. I saw them open for Aerosmith (yes they were the opening band) and they were AMAZING! They started their set with the slow version of -You’re Crazy- and I was mesmerized. This was pre-Lies so no one had heard it done this way yet and it’s all I talked about for MONTHS was the slow-version-of-You’re-Crazy-this and The slow-version-of-You’re-Crazy-that. Then when I heard that’s originally how they wanted to record it it made perfect sense. The song was just made to be played that way and it showed. This was also before all of the meltdowns, fisticuffs, too drunk to play moments, and riots that defined their later gigs. This was definitely them in their prime and I feel fortunate to have been able to see them like that. It’s a show I will never forget OBVIOUSLY as I could talk about it all day STILL! Needless to say Aerosmith also played a great show and pulled out a lot of their more obscure songs. This was the third time I had seen Aerosmith and it was also the best I had heard them. They opened their set with -Rats In The Cellar- and it’s only got better from there. Over all One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen and will ever see. I would say it’s the best show I’ve ever seen next to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, RHCP. That’s one show and that’s the order that they played. So, yes! I saw a show where Peal Jam was the opening act. I was really there to see Nirvana and well... we all know how that goes. Anyway, thank you for letting me indulge.
Your vids are really cool and easy to follow.. I've been playing for years and I'd consider myself a theory guy but you piece it together really well and your vids are great for learning bitching riffs. Thanks man!
Hi Ross . Thanks for this fantastic slash like guitar solo . I am also a big slash and GnR fan . Actually slash was the man who inspired me start playing electric guitar. I am not even close to your skills thou. I really love those double stops in the beginning of the solo , could you make a video where you show how all the solo is played not just the ending part . Tnx again
Well done buddy in a good way you show how to play such a style of playing the guitar: You deny those who think. That complicated and fast guitar playing is not the most important
Excellent, the tips are great about timing....., that’s why it is so difficult to precisely copy some of his solos... they are just bursts of notes. Great lesson... I’mm 55 and learned something!
Ross thanks for a great analysis i loved that video when you analyzed slash was using harmonic minor so from what i see here Slash is targeting chord tones strongly i wont get surprised if he jumps into mixoldydian or dorian at times🤔
Great video Ross, not just the playing and example but how to develop it into own ideas - very few think about this. Robben Ford diminished type licks between chord changes as a request?
I love this tutorial! I am a huge slash fan and trying to break his techniques down into slow mo on your own is a nightmare!. Will go practice this now, thinking about buying your course too I am fairly advance in technique how ever need theory to really take my playing to the next level. Would you recommend for someone who want a to learn the fretboard/modes/ scales?
Hi Ross, great video. I am going to sign up for your course. Did you use an amp with the Les Paul in this video or was it straight in to the computer? Thanks!
TheConTraDemOn saw him live too, twice ! But gotta say, I kinda feel like he’s missing something recently yknow. Like he’s bored. Maybe because he’s just playing same old stuff and knowing Slash he wants to evolve as a guitarist.
Yeah, do Slash. Slash, Slash and more Slash! And then maybe some Scotti Hill from Skid Row. Been !earning some of his old solos lately, and he's got exquisite phrasing.
