@@emmawickman1196 This is youtube, so many of us thought the same thing. Not once did I mention she had a large tummy or anything about her body to imply anything that would be cause for negativity. She even mentioned in a video that it must have been the excitement of the boat on her face and she laughed. So you're the only one taking my comment to a negative place, instead of what she saw as a positive happy mistake and how we were all so excited and happy for her, she even said thank you and how supportive we all are. She is a very intelligent beautiful woman who can speak up for herself if something is bothering her, like she has in the past.

@@TheMusicrox4 I spoke to the owner a few days ago. It is under contract right now and should have been hauled for a survey already. We really loved the boat but we wanted to look at some other boats on the market before making our decision. Another reason was its a shoal draft version with a somewhat winged keel and we are looking for a fin keel. The owner of the Najad is fairly religious about maintaining the boat and after spending about an hour talking to him dockside, I don't think there are any hidden problems with the boat that may arise later. It's a solid boat and we'll taken care of. We were just not ready to pull the trigger on buying a boat until we explored other boats on the market. However, this is proving to be problematic in a sellers market because everything we look at is selling extremely fast.

Hallo . I am a Danish man and I am 48 years old and work as a carpenter. I was born in Denmark but live and work in Norway now. I live near Oslo which is the capital of Norway. I watch your videos and it's exciting to follow your journey. I myself have looked at sailboats in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. if i were here i would look at the goggle and find a sailboat here. firstly, the 3 countries here sail a lot and secondly, the Norwegian krone is very low / small compared to dollars. so if we say that you want to spend 100000 dollars then today it is 854000 Norwegian kroner .. for the price here in Norway you get Abselut a very very nice and maintained boat at that price. very nice and very new equipment and very new electronics etc. You get everything and not least you get a big newer boat for a family of 4. here you get 7 times more boat if you can put it that way. if I were you I would do it .. and here you can get all the same documents on the boat and also a purchase contract where everything is written down around the boat etc. That's just what I'm thinking and just a sweet letter to you in America so you can make some considerations about boat purchases .. and it does not take that long to sail between the US and Norway ... and if you do there are many companies that can provide the boat with a great and professional service before you sail home to the USA. then you have a big new boat that can sail around the world in a safe way and I think it will make you very happy. Best regards from Norway. Danish man. Michell fiorini. Thanks 😊👍

G'day Desiree & Jordan, firstly, if you run out of choices in the States, come visit me in Western OZ! I got two boat yards in Australia 🇦🇺, with dozens of boats, several of them, definitely tick all your boxes! Me wife's uncle has a Najad 380 or 381, not exactly sure, but I was able to sail it briefly while visiting the United Kingdom; although, it was probably 10 years ago. What an amazing cruiser. The Najad, in general, is easy to sail with one person. The Najad 370 is an absolutely beautiful boat with incredible finished carpentry and joinery. What an amazing exhibition of craftsmanship. Thankfully, there's not a teak deck to worry about and a bunch of stringers and wood to replace and eventually a new deck to rebed. Najad boats make absolutely great open-ocean, bluewater cruisers. The Scandinavians certainly know how to build amazing boats. However, having sailed the Najad 380 (381) and also being familiar with the 370, it's a bluewater cruiser made more for a couple.....NOT a family of four, IMHO! Although, the boat's interior was quite deceptively spacious, the headroom is bloody shallow and can pose a real problem for taller people. I'm 6'3" and thought about wearing a helmet while in the galley. There's zero headroom and it's quite uncomfortable. Very limited movement. Also, the aft deck seemed a bit congested. I liked the rigging and possibilities. This was definitely a beautifully crafted boat, that can tackle most bluewater conditions, had great rigging, incredible craftsmanship, but it's NOT designed comfortably, especially, for a family of four! Good luck to you both. Cheers from Western OZ!

Nice boat! As a PS 40 owner I can give a few comparisons and opinions. Reefing - we have 2 line reefing for 2 reefing points. All of our lines except the foresail halyards are led to the cockpit. We have reefed “easily” in 40+ knots without leaving the cockpit. A real plus. I really like having all the lines led back to the cockpit as long as you don’t have to go to the mast to reef. I think it’s really important not to leave the cockpit at night when only one of you is awake. You are 100% correct about the benefits of the head right by the companionway. I agree on the value of a totally fiberglass shower pan. Our previous boat was not that way and we had issues. I also agree about chainplates attached to wood bulkheads. We had rot problems on our previous boat. Granny bars are great. My wife stands on them for coral lookout and for connecting the halyard to the main and for zipping the stack pack. We love the cutter rig in terms of sail options. Tacking the Genoa is hampered by the staysail. It must be a lot worse with setup on the Nayad. There is room on deck for a 10ft rib on deck between the mast and staysail on the PS40. We miss not having a swim platform. We actually find the height of the center cockpit a bit less secure feeling than a deeper cockpit. Our cockpit floor is not much higher than the waterline. Our previous boat was flat bottom in front of the keel and pounded in heavier seas. The PS 40 does not. We have sailed the Bahamas and Chesapeake without difficulty with our 6’2” draft. We’ve also done the entire length of the ICW from Annapolis to West Palm on the inside, but it was a challenge at times. Outside is easier. Agree with everything you said about the Bimini and dodger. We frequently open the front of our dodger for ventilation in the cockpit in the summer. Hope to see you sometime in the Chesapeake! Enjoy shopping!

I have to admit, this series “finding a boat home” is one of my favorites (and I’ve seen them all!). Thank you for inviting us along. As Desiree intimated, maybe it would be less expensive for Jordan to have “corrective height” surgery than to put the money into a boat with higher cabin space. Just saying.

BTW, of all the boats you will have checked-out (by Feb 10), I think the Valiant 42 will be your top choice thus far. Took one to Mexico, in '97. Great sailor. Roomy, safe, forgiving and comfortable motion at sea. The canoe stern is, of course, a drawback but I've seen some neat boarding ladder arrangements that fit to the lifeline gates.

Hi, Please consider the reality of two kids in the same space. When they are small, they'll wake each other up, and that will make you cry! (Trust me, I know this as fact.) When they are a bit older they will play/squabble in a shared space. You will go nuts if you cant separate them! Even a double up/down type of berth would be some help. But the best thing is to find a boat with a Vberth for you and two separate quarter berths for them. I know a little about kids and boats; I have twins, grown up now. It's a great environment for them but they need, and you need, their own space to sleep and chill.

The najad 390 has a real navigation space/office and it has headroom in the galley and it has flush deck. I agree about your (Jordan) argument that its practical to have the hauls at the mast instead of lead to the cockpit. Its more simple. If something gets jammed, you can quickly see what the issue is because the lines goes strait up from where you are standing, which is not necessarily the case if the lines are lead into the cockpit, where the view of the lines might be obstructed. Also its nice to have the lines/hauls out of the cockpit for simplicity and keeping it tidy. You don't have lines running along the deck to the cockpit, which takes up deckspace and are moving under your feet if you walk/stand on them. You have less maintenance as well. Simplicity is key, always in my book, for several reasons: It takes the stress out of situations where things are getting heated, fx because of increasing winds, hitting ground, people getting injured falling overboard etc. The less complexity you have the easier it is to compose yourself because boatsystems are obvious and therefore easy to figure out when your are stressed. Nice Boat also like the Valiant 42 and the Shannon 43, all good caliber choices.

I've been sailing since I was 6, then I gravitated to powerboats and thats where I've been for the last 30 years. I thought I would be returning to sailing again but thats just not going to happen. Looks like we will remain as owners of poweroats. However, I get my dose of sailing through your videos. You guys do a great job of explaining what to look for when shopping for a boat. Some of the information can also be used when shopping for a powerboat as my wife and I are currently doing (this will be our 7th boat). I hope you find what you're looking for. I know it's not easy fitting a family of 4 on a boat, any boat. The Najad sure seems like a good candidate but the fixed side portholes would certainly be a problem. For those that like the boat regardless I wonder how expensive it would be to install portholes that open. This is something that may be worth looking in to as the boat has alot of great features. The almost 6ft draft would make it a bit deep for your intended use though but it sure works well for deeper water performance, especially to windward. Well, here's to a successful search! Keep up the good work and keep those videos coming.

Hi Guys, I really like the way you assess each boat and you have been to see some very fine ones. However, I really hope you get as far as looking at an Amel Santorin. Height - no problem. Good nav station. Solid life lines all round. Safe centre cockpit. Solid spray dodger with windows that open. Two separate heads (bathrooms). Great access to the engine and most likely a generator also. Large water capacity and large fuel capacity. Do not underestimate the value of a ketch rig. The Santorin can also carry a mizen staysail for light winds. There is loads of storage space. The decks are clear for little feet to play and run safely. The Amel Santorin is in your price range. Happy hunting and stay safe. Cheers, Niall

I work for a large boatyard in the SF Bay area and have had the opportunity to see hundreds of boats. I think you need to broaden your horizons just a bit with respect to age of vessels you are willing to consider. Many boats from the 80s have already been professionally refit. The hull shape of many of the 70s -80s vintage cruisers generally have better suited underbodies for long distance voyaging. Boats I would add to search: Valiant 47, Wauquiez 47, Passport 40, Cardinal 46, Kelley-Peterson 44-46, Norseman 447, CT-47, Kaufman 47, Bristol 41.1 to 45.5, Cambria 47, Taswell 43. If you check in with John Kretschmer on any of these, I'm sure he would approve of most of them. Most of these boats will perform well, sail to weather and have good motion comfort indexes in the mid 30 range or higher.

This is a great series. Fun to watch you. measure different models against your requirements. Something I've been thinking while watching the last few videos is that as a father of 4, space for a family of 4 is going to be something you cannot imagine until you get there so the larger your boat, the closer you are going to come to meeting your needs. Hard to imagine what it will be like with a couple kids crawling all over the place but it will be a challenge...Go large!

Small boat do have the advantage for longer use that a lot of things cost less because of size , sails , and rig , engine, etc Great to see you have more Patreons coming on board , I know they come and go but so great to see the appeal continues. Go look at a modern design , big swim platform , wide beam aft, get over a full skeg rudder . It's actually a disadvantage. Ask Nigel Calder who had to rebuild his hull twice after he had a grounding and did so much structural damage. A simple spade rudder might have bent or broken but the hull damage would have been minor and easily fixable. Cheers Warren

It's pretty old, I guess the first build that they build in the 37 ft series. I looked at the Najad 373 around 2005, and I found that the builders have really worked out the small nitty-gritty details to make it super confy, inside and also in the cockpit. Well worth to look for a more updated model, i.e. for good model to be perfect.

That is a heck of a boat for occasional cruises! I don't believe that would be comfortable after 6 months or a year.

Hi! Been following you for quite some time now. You should be able to raise the bimini. You should also be able to open the isenglas part for a nice flow in the cockpit. If you like the Najad you should check out the Hallberg Rassy. Not sure of the price range there in the US but here in Sweden they are sort of on par. Great vid as always and good luck on your search for the new home.

Go with the Shannon 43! You will find out that anything smaller based on your plans is not going to work. I understand that you are minimalists, but if you want to be comfortable, go with the biggest boat you can afford and definitely no shorter than 40 ft.

With the limitations of Jordan's height might I suggest that you look at Dutch boats. The Dutch are the tallest people in Europe. We live on a Carena 40 from 1980. She's steel ketch with a center cockpit and a cutter rig. The standing headroom in the salon is 2,20 meters. I'm 6 foot and can stand everywhere in this boat. The interior layout is similar to the Najad only roomier. Good luck on your search.

Nice review, but I think you will find that the light wind performance is better than you expect, see Ran Sailing speed in light winds, very good! Maybe a Najad 440 or the Najad 470 or 490 would fit the specs you need. I personally love them. Ran Sailing did a walk through. André

The Najad was definitely a cool economical boat. It could open up chances to go places like Patagonia, Cape Horn, and Antarctica more safely but probably not aligned well with the destinations currently planned for Project Atticus, or to host a growing family. Headroom would probably be an issue for Jordan even if you found a Najad in the mid-40's lengthwise. Center cockpits will create a lot of low ceiling headaches in almost any boat make. The "wedding cake" effect of center cockpit designs also places the crew a lot higher above the water line. It keeps you more dry in rough seas, but also translates to a lot more movement in every direction over the boat's center of gravity. If you guys are still hanging out around New Bern, NC, then Ocracoke Island is a fun day trip. It's a long, but super pretty ferry ride. The island is tiny, but there's a lot of natural sights to explore and the restaurants are oddly amazing for such a small town. Looking forward to the next tour!

I think you can make the Najad 370 work. Get a removable backrest/seat for the comm area, replace the fixed windows with ones that open, have Jordan use the wet bath/shower, the cockpit and dodger can be modified (more height and air). All of those are minor items that can be changed. All the other items you listed that you liked cannot easily be added to another boat.

The najad 370 is too small to be confortable but I think that Moody 425 will fit your needs. It has almoste the same layout withe 2 more bads in your way to the aft cabin and most of crousers use this space to fin a washing machine, an Othe freezer and keep the upper bad for storage. 😉

@SVImpavidus
@SVImpavidus 3 года назад
They are well built. The Volvo engines take more maintenance but it's manageable. The teak decks are an issue! (nightmare!) Some earlier ones were screwed down and even later ones have fixings that penetrate the teak and the deck resulting in core issues. The teak works like a storage heater the further south you go the more you will hate it. Absorbing heat from the sun it gets very hot! And then cooling off at night into the boat making it no place to sleep. (Because of its shear thermal mass). Plus you can't walk on it during the day it is too hot!!! Skeg hung rudder is a bit of an armchair sailors tail. Even the latest Halberg's have balanced twin rudders because the technology has moved on from the 1980s when blade rudders were in their infancy. They fall of because people dont maintain them. They are also much shorter than the keel no days. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Center cockpit is so safe!! Great yacht but i would have the same problem, that off being too tall, you need more headroom. Glad to see you guys are exploring the North European yachts, they are usually double the price when new, so finding one in the price range u have in mind might take a bit of time. If you need some help getting in touch in Belgium or the Netherlands, give me a shout and ill help scouting for ya. Linda & I just completed an 11 year circumnavigation on our 2003 Najad 373. I am 6'1 and Linda is 5'7" . Sure its a little tight by the fridge and the aft cabin is snug. But we lived in comfort and safety for all those miles. Even today we get compliments on her design. Size is a relative issue. They say Neptune is blind. Try a HR 43 or a Najad 44 for more space. Look at an Amel 53. We love our boat. S/Y B'Sheret

We have enjoyed watching y’all finding your new home! I have so very much to add as a mother of three and having spent the last 15 years caring the all the wonderful kiddos in our ski town in Montana. I would love to share more about my thoughts and my “qualifications” to share them. For the sake of the public comment I’ll leave a quick list......As your looking at future boats try to imagine what the space will feel like one handed with a baby on the hip or carrier, where will you nap, will you take one berth while baby is up every couple hours, when underway does the captain want to lend a hand or be separate, when cooking how quick can you get to baby, is there a way to gate off any area, where will all the baby “junk” go, is there a bottle neck in the kitchen or companion way, can you cook/work far enough from sleeping baby to not wake them up, where will grandma stay??!!?? That said I think the Shannon 43 should be back in the running! Best of Luck finding the next Atticus.

If you seriously think about looking at boats in Europe I would recommend especially looking in the Baltic sea area. The boats up here are sailed in brackish water where the wear and tear of UV-light and salt is significantly less compared to more southern latitudes. It is also very common to haul out the boats for at least 6 months per year during the winter months also reducing general wear and generally keeping aging boats in better condition. Not a guarantee of course, but there are many boats in great shape despite their age. Being somewhat bias of course.

Please check out the Catalina 42. I know that they are a "Production Boat" but they are build very well. I owned a Catalina 34 and was very impressed with the over construction. The 42's are solid fiberglass hull, keel stepped mast, great room for a family and sail like a dream......just saying! The 3 cabin version with fin keel would be a great choice for you. Also, Catalina Direct is a great place to buy direct replacement parts when needed. I give them a A+++ for parts availability and speedy delivery.

Kids, I've been watching your videos for a few months and I feel your pain over the whole bulkhead tabbing disaster. But I'm curious - why aren't you thinking about a Pearson 424 cutter? You could get one in immaculate condition for around 70k. Perfect kitchen, forward and aft cabins, accessible engine, comfy nav station with a big desk, good headroom. It's a terrific family boat, and I know this because I have a family and I'm sitting on the one we own.

EH Guys its been a long while. This may be the best pre purchase boat interview I have seen! Nice to see you both doing well along with the channel!! There is one thing I'd like to mention tho: I suggest looking deeper into the pluses of a partially hung rudder. The lower run of the rudder (below skeg pivot) while contributing to balance also reduces rotational stresses! I see this as win win throughout the steering system. Looking forward to see your final choice ;)
