How Sokka Became a Leader | Avatar the Last Airbender

Avatar the Last Airbender is one of the greatest cartoons of all time. Or actually, one of the greatest television shows of all time. Following the cast of Aang, Zuko, Sokka, Katara, and Toph, the show presents mature themes and emotionally evoking writing. On top of that, the world of bending gives a rich sense of unique fantasy unable to be found outside of the Avatar universe.
In my time of making Avatar analysis videos, I've covered nearly every character of the main cast in some way. From Zuko vs Ozai, to Katara and blood bending, to Toph and how simple isn't bad. But in all of these videos, the character of Sokka has remained largely untouched...until now. This week on Kato, Hoodie examines and analyzes the character of Sokka, and how through a variety of experiences including encountering Jet, the Day of the Black Sun, and escaping the Boiling Rock, Sokka became a leader.

Hey guys, I'm campaigning to get selected to go to San Francisco and represent the channel over at KindaFunny(ru-vid.com). Basically they're flying a couple of creators out to do some shows with them, and it's being done by audience nomination. I've been following KindaFunny for years now, and if you listen to any of our podcasts you could probably spot me stealing parts of Greg Miller's intro. They're a huge inspiration to what I do, and what I want to be, so it would mean the world to get nominated. If you guys could go to this link(kindafunny.com/upandcomer) and fill out in my name, you would all be doing me the biggest favor in the world. No sign ups required. Just put "Hoodie from Kato", and explain why you like my videos. Particularly ones about film would be cool, but anything works. If you tweet at us(@ZeroAndHoodie) with a screenshot of your submission, I'll shout you out at the end of the month's review. Thanks and much love to you all. -Hoodie

Seriously, Sokka is the most important character on Team Avatar. Sokka maps out all of the routes, actively looks for weaknesses in the Fire Nation, thus finding out about the eclipse, overthrowing the government in Ba Sing Sae, and he leads the troops in the final battle. He is a non-bender and a comic relief character, but he is the most influential character along with Iroh.

I disagree. I don't think any of them is more important that the other, but in terms of pure leadership, they would all be fucked without Katara. She is the one to take up the mantle when everyone else gave up, and pushes down her own needs and fears for the rest. Sokka is really important for strategy, but not so much for keeping the team itself together.

Yes, Katara was a bit of a damsel in distress in that episode, but I feel like that weakness added even more to her character. She made a mistake, just like how Sokka made mistakes, but she picked herself up from it. The way she got back at Jet at the end of the episode was more than satisfying and redeeming. I also don't agree that "this episode is not that great." It's actually one of the most important episodes in my opinion as it shifts the perspectives of a lot of characters, as well as the audience. It makes us realize that the fire nation vs. non-fire nation isn't as black and white as we think (as in good and bad).
@peachesandcream8753
@peachesandcream8753 5 лет назад
I think it also highlighted just what girls do, when a powerful and good looking man gives them attention they swoon which is exactly what happened to Katara. She probably never received male attention before, Aang doesn't count because he technically isn't a man, so it was entirely new to her so she fell hard which was her character flaw due to lack of experience. This episode was a learning experience for her that good looking and charismatic men who make out like they're messiah's aren't always to be trusted. The same thing happened to Aang because he was faced with a leader who was charismatic and could bend him to his will. Aang is very passive in comparison to Jet so he went along with it like a passive underling would do and his learning experience was that leaders, regardless of where they come from, don't always have the best intentions.
@hollywoodshopaholic

@Lilac Cloud lol exactly, Katara was a 14-year-old girl with very little (if any) relationship experience, of course she was naive and immediately developed a crush on Jet.
@スノーハッピー
@スノーハッピー 4 года назад
I agree. If that's all Katara did in the show or season, if that's the only way she behaved, i'd have a big problem with it. But she was young and relatively naive, and she grew and she developed.
@lDaNu
@lDaNu 4 года назад
Katara trusting Hana is rather justified, finding a water bender in enemy's land must have been soothing and comforting, making her believe she has an ally and someone who she can relate in a situation where she and the people she cares about have to be careful to not get caught, which is a very stressful situation to be in
@beevie4081
@beevie4081 2 года назад
I agree; Katara being a damsel is part of what made that episode great. In the very first episode we get the contrast between Sokka being suspicious and Katara being trusting of Aang. In that case, trust paid off, and Sokka was portrayed as being a little foolish. Jet comes in, and they react in a similar way, but this time Sokka is right and Katara looks foolish. It just underlines that judging how much to trust someone is hard, and there are obviously two ways to get it wrong.

The problem with the Day of Black Sun plan was that it was told by Kuie to Azula, so it was doomed to failure because it was undermined. The Fire Nation prepared for it. It hinged on being a surprise attack. Otherwise, that would have been the end for the Fire Nation. The actions of his teammates were also lacking. With Jet, they basically flooded the Fire Nation city despite Sokka's warning. He was often the voice of caution and reason, they ignored. In the end, Sokka leads Suki and Toph in the destruction of the Fire Nation air fleet. Even if Aang would have lost, or was forced to retreat, without his army and facing the White Lotus, Ozai would have to eventually stop his advance. Aang fought one man, Sokka devised a plan to stop an army.
@tiffanypersaud3518
@tiffanypersaud3518 5 лет назад
Thank you. I loved this too. We forget that Ozai was just one man, and the Fire Nation was a highly military-style nation whose sense of superiority meant they would have just got a new Ozai, or someone even worse.

Mike M, but Sokka should have realized the plan was compromised after the Earth Nation was taken. It was not only the Earth King who knew of the plan (who Sokka could have asked if he shared it with anyone they didn’t know) but many generals who could have leaked it off screen.

I’m thinking about how Azula, when cornered, picked out that Sokka was the leader and probably the biggest threat to her, which is why she focused on him to bait rather than the others, since she knew if he was distracted the others would follow what he chose to do, which was stay and fight her

another cool thing I realised is why Zuko helped Sokka, in addition to wanting to prove his loyalty to Team Avatar. After the episode "Zuko Alone", he realises himself the importance of companionship, in his case the companionship of Iroh, and that he can't doesn't have to bear all of the burden himself. I think it's great how a character's growth can also be an important lesson to another character.

Even without the community, ATLA already has rewatchability, you can draw so much wisdom from the show to your life, my favorite character is uncle Iroh, he once was like Zuko, a good kid trying to live a destiny someone else put on his shoulders, but then, he learned by his mistakes and decided to choose his own destiny and redeem himself, we know Iroh after his growth, he is already a different person than General Iroh, The Dragon of the West, now he is uncle Iroh, wise and humble, loving and caring.

I think this kinda glosses over the most important first step, the lesson Suki taught him that his chauvinism is in fact an impediment, and that even without "magic", women can still fight and he doesn't need to put up a strong front for everyone's sake. He was humbled, lessened his joking about/diminishing benders (including his own sister), and became more willing to trust others. In a more minor aspect, his wanting to seek Yue's and her father's approval also helped that along. And finally, Wan Shi Tong's library. He was fully willing to risk his life, betting on his own mind (with good reason), in order to finally end the war the best way they could, since they were running out of time. Katara is still a 14 year old kid that dreams of an epic romantic lovestory. I think this episode is inportant for her character development as well. She learns, that romance and love is not like in the old fairytales. Btw, that's why she's never going to be with Zuko. The fire vs water dynamic is a thing of her teenage years, a thing she had with Jet and she got over it. She overcame the fantasies of the bad boy romance and committed to a mature, honest and caring relationship, where the love was deeper than hot headed romance could ever be. Especially for a down-to-earth character like Katara. UPDATE after 3 years: zutara all the way. zuko is absolutely no bad boy whatsoever, he's just a really awkward dork, and he understands Katara and connects with her. They each compliment each other and bring out the best in each other. while i like aang and katara together, their relationship is unbalanced and most of the time itit'its only Katara that takes care of Aang, not the other around. Katara is far too badass to stand in Aang's shadow her whole life.

Sokka is a tactical genius. I always thought his arc was about accepting his role in Team Avatar for being the brains (not melee or bending combat) and excelling at it. And I agree somewhat about his ego, but I always thought his arrogance came from a place of wanting to feel like he had control, like he was a man, and he could protect his loved ones. Because he knew the pain of failing to do so as a child.

It's interesting you mention that Sokka re-learned to trust in his companions thanks to Zuko and the others, as well as to trust his intelligence and planning skills again, since in the finale that's precisely what ends up happening. He comes up with the plan to destroy the air fleet and he trusts Suki and Toph completely the whole time. I'd never really noticed that connection there till now. It's subtle connections like that that make me love this show so much.

Thanks for the video! Sokka's arc re-watching the series in adulthood really appealed to me especially with his spiralling self-doubt and how he overcame it. Sokka is a wit-bender. He is also sort of our self-insert as non-benders into the Avatar universe. He shows how there is power in uniqueness and finding what your strengths are and using them, and having continued confidence in them and more strengths you discover along the way. He is not simply a comic-relief character. And I disliked how often he seemed to be reduced to that. Which is why I loved his arc so much.

So about the Katara thing, I always felt that the first season had a problem with simplifying characters or exaggerating their flaws to make the other character, who the episode is about, have a better conflict or a better arc in that particular episode. Now it worked out sometimes, like with the episode where Suki is introduced, each character of the main cast had a flaw showcased and dealt with in a neat way without taking away from Sokka who the episode was about, I'd say Katara and Aang's flaws, especially Aang's, where maybe pushed a bit too hard and may have taken a bit away from Sokka's arc in the episode, but all and all it was a good use of the thing. Now with other episodes, it varies from either: Works out well for the character who the episode's about but still messes up with the others, like the episode you mentioned in this episode. To it just sucks for all the characters, like in the infamous episode "The great divide" where Sokka and Katara are so simplified that they just became objects for the plot of the episode to use, and that's where Aang who the episode is supposed to be about should come and have a good to great arc but we didn't get that either it was about his responsibility as the avatar to help everyone get along and how big of a burden that is but it didn't develop it very well since it ended with Aang just lying to them for them to get along which just came out of left field because it seemed like just Aang succumbing to a flaw of his which wasn't what the episode seemed to be about that and that issue was just never addressed again as far as I can remember, and so we just ended up with very simplified characters that didn't help get something interesting out of the character who the episode was about. That being said, I think the show avoids this problem almost completely as it continues on in seasons 2 and 3. So yeah, that's a thing I've noticed kinda bothered me in the first season.
@KirbySonicTeam
@KirbySonicTeam 5 лет назад
I agree that season 1 had this problem on occasion however I think some of them actually work well with the character once you have full context. For example, Kataras crush on Jet comes across way strong and to dramatic. So when Jet returns they make her reaction to him strong and dramatic. It paints it in a way to show that, yes, this was just some crush that she put way to much passion into and she reacts the same way to him and his return. Also considering Katara is very idealistic and gives her heart and soul into things she cares for it makes her crush on Jet seem consistent and paints her as the naive girl she is at the start of the series who transforms into a harder and more realistic, but still caring, person by the end. TLDR it fits her character overall throughout the series Please reply :)
@sunnyblakeevers8123
@sunnyblakeevers8123 5 лет назад
The Great Divide is most likely the most disliked episode of avatar by far , the only real relevance it has is that at its core it gives a basic preview of what our three main protagonists’ personalities are when simplified . Episodes like this tend to be aired a bunch because for new viewers of the show they could learn who the characters were , thus it became hated .
@Mahawww
@Mahawww 5 лет назад
@@KirbySonicTeam Yeah, you're right on that front, but I think it still took over the entirety of her character and just made her a tool of the plot. I mean, that could be argued to be since she was very naive but I still think it was pushed a bit too much, her ignoring all of what Sokka said after Jet just simply pulling out a knife seemed out of character even if she was charmed by Jet. But in a general sense, yeah it does fit with her overall character arc, as most of these cases do. It's just that it simplifies the characters a bit too much in the episodes in which they aren't the main focus.
@N.Traveler
@N.Traveler 5 лет назад
Very well explained! I just think the reason behind this kind of writing may also have had a practical function: Remember that this aired on Nickelodeon who had a pretty strict policy. This show was aimed at kids. In order for them to really see the changes in the characters more clearly, they may have HAD to overexaggerate their flaws to make it more apparent for children back then for them to understand the concept of character 'growth'. Maybe if the writers weren't so tied to these policies and the target audience, they would have approached it differently. I just noticed from their interviews, that they mentioned having to change a lot of things to make it kid-appropriate, so that's why I think this may have played a role. :)

I never blamed Sokka for his ego. He was just a kid when his father entrusted him with the responsibility of being the man of the house and protector of the tribe, and of training a group of toddlers for battle all by himself. Sokka hadn't even experienced battle yet, and had no one to guide him or any peers to commiserate with. That's a tremendous amount of pressure to put on someone; he seemed so in over his head in the first two episodes that I felt really sorry for him. While Katara stepped up and became a mother figure, too, nobody was pressuring her to do so. People often blame young men for trying too hard or overcompensating without understanding how much pressure they're under. As a girl, I can't imagine having such heavy expectations placed on you.

Eventually I realized the sokka was basically their “General” for tactics and I thought wow they messed up if sokka was the General. However this video makes me finally realize that sokka was a serious character.

If I would change anything, I'd like for his sword training to happen earlier in Season 3. The longer he has time to train swordsmanship, the more he can flex it during the finale without making his skills looks unrealistic. Sure, his brains is what makes him important. But that doesn't stop him from being sick with the sword. I don't think he raised his blade against anyone in the entirety of the finale

Yeah, I mean he may not bend but he IS a superb warrior, frequently taking out many trained adults single-handed. He's not just brains, he's got legit brawn as well. Seeing that develop even more would have been really exciting, especially since few other characters make use of swords.

What struck me about Sokka was his actions in the very first or second episode when Zuko shows up in his village. While presented comically, since he gets his ass whooped, Sokka immediately stands up against Zuko and his host of fire nation soldiers. It’s a great showing of who Sokka is at his core - competent or not, he’s going to fight. So as he gains competence over the course of the story, it allows him to manifest his inner strength externally. He’s your classic “try-hard” who, through humiliation and repetition, becomes someone admirable.
