Every year, 1.4 billion tons of food waste are discarded worldwide, with the majority ending up in landfill. Food waste accounts for some 6 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Since the beginning of the year, France has made it mandatory for food to be separated from other waste at source. But according to official figures, only one in three French citizens are able to do so. By contrast, South Korea made food waste recycling mandatory back in 2005, becoming a model for other countries. So how did South Korea become the champion of food recycling? Our regional correspondents report.

Koreans are the leaders of recycling. They take recycling classes at school from an early age. They separate paper, plastic, cans, etc. The more you know Korea, the more you have a unique culture of S Korea. I've been to Korea and it was very nice! Want to go again.

I want to know why onion skins are not part of the food waste

When First this system started, making food waste into cattle feed was its purpose, so that day, lawmaker made the rule not to include some ingredients that are not eatable to cattle, like dirted onion skin, shell of carb, seed of chilly and so on. That onion skin part is trace at that time and needed to be changed. Recently, food waste is not provided to cattle directly, and mostly being used to make biogas. And even making feeds, the feeds are provided to breed larvas, and send that larvas to hennery or fish farm.

Rule of thumbs: If you cannot feed them to the cattle, they're not food scraps

I don’t understand why people leave all the leftovers at the restaurant table, and not just take it home instead to eat later.

it is probably not part of their culture. Here in the U.S it is normal to take leftovers to go.

You can do that if you want (it is not something rude), but since those side dishes are basically everywhere across the country, no one really does that.

All these new taxes are making me scared… Next step is a tax on how much oxygen I breathe & how much CO2 I breathe out…🤯

The cost for the waste is not tax, I think each ones' responsibility.
