Bjorn hello, I have been following you and have been enjoying your videos for the past year. This video really spoke to my inner self. What you say is so true, and I could not say it better myself, it doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman, I think it applies to both. wearealltubes I love this -I liken it to the difference between a hardwood tree and a flexible young sapling in a heavy wind, remaining flexible is what keeps us in the game. Studying the past however gives us a framework and history often repeats itself. In the tree analogy it is the roots giving us frame of reference to draw from in time of need as a tree draws water from the water table.

Many years ago my father and I were standing in front of our house when we saw a neighbor on his motorcycle coming down a side street, he stopped at the corner and we greeted each other he then proceeded across the intersection when from around the corner a car being driven by a drunken driver sped down the road hitting our neighbor and smashed into a tree. We ran to our friend whose leg was mangled and almost amputated. The next moments were hazy until I felt the slap of my father's hand, you see he was ministering to the man while I stared in stunned silence, he had been giving me directions to help and had heard nothing. I will never forget what he said next, " You haven't the right to indulge your emotions when a man's life is at stake" our neighbor lived they even managed to save his leg though he walked with a limp for the rest of his life and to this day I have been able to keep my head when those about me are losing theirs.

Very true. And it also keeps people from being too in your personal business. I often get asked why I always look too serious or why I never smile or something like that. Little do they know I'm always smiling and laughing and yet I choose my moments instead of wasting the energy and moments when they are un-needed. It creates a bit of mystique about me i guess but it's part of who i am and nobody bothers me and i dont get too involved in my emotions so that they dont hinder me

When I was younger I was "high maintenance" and didn't like food that wasn't cooked correctly, I didn't like it if it was too hot or too cold outside, etc. Then I joined the Army. I learned that "you don't have to feel everything". Now I don't care about how my food is cooked, as long as I have some. I don't complain about the hot or cold, I simply accept it. I learned to stop and think before reacting emotionally, I learned to delay my feelings until a more appropriate time to let them out. It does set you free when you stop fighting against the things that you think are important and start focusing on the things that really are. I have been teaching for years that survival is 1% knowledge, and 99% having the will not to die. Without a clear and level head, you won't survive a single day.

It just takes patients and time. All I can suggest, enjoy them, each and every day, for they will soon grow-up, hopefully have some 'grandkids' that you can visit, which will enrich your life beyond and material item. My kids are grown, I always look back and say, what if...well, all you can do, is the best you can...and just from the above sentence, it's obvious you care. For me, a good run/walk in the morning for atleast 30 minutes will calm the soul. Get your kids to join you, memories for life:)
@danielcrawford7315
@danielcrawford7315 5 лет назад
In addition to Jeffe Notti comments, which bear a great deal of truth...perhaps more so in the age before electric devices, another thing to note is your children are in a time of great outside influences. Be it good or be it bad, there are others who hold great influences over our children. Schools and all they incorporate from teachers to curriculum to other children hold a huge influence on our young. Television and various media on the cellphone as well hold a huge influence on our children. I fell it is important for us as parents to keep these influences in mind as we go about rearing our young. Myself for example, born in the 60's to older parents who were born to older parents ( to note my grand father would have been 100 the year I was born, my mother was 45 when I was born) and as such I'm pretty old fashioned. I recall in '78 being on the receiving end of a lodge cast iron skillet for an unwise decision on my part...truely unwise...afterwards I was tasked with the accountability discussion. To my mothers complete dismay her teenage son explained to her she was not my only influence in life and I'd learned things from others. Honestly this came more as a surprise to her than catching me and the neighbors daughter unclad in the barn exploring for birds and bees. As I said unwise decisions are made by children/teens, most of which are the fruits of outside influences. I tried hard to remember this in rearing my children and stepchildren...with limited success mind you. We as parents do the best we know how in an ever changing world. Reality is very harsh too, and it is hard to keep up with the times and rear our children accoringly. I'm sure you'll do just fine, given life and times. As long as you keep in mind everything of this world and that children, much as we would like them to be aren't carbon copies of the parents. Blessed days sirSir, Crawford out

Stoicism used to be celebrated in movies and television, especially in movies about the "Old West", but also in war movies, with famous stars like John Wayne epitomising the stoic ideal. After WW2 , boys grew up watching shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza on television, and went to the theater to see a plethora of cowboy movies. I was lucky enough to be introduced to those movies and re-runs of those shows by my father when I was young, and so I learnt about stoicism before I even knew what it was.

The Jedi philosophy in the old Star Wars movies is also very stoic in nature. Control your fear, calm your mind, focus on what you're doing in the present, mastery of the self as a path to virtue. Yet as culture has shifted in the US we no longer see this in movies, and indeed the latest Star Wars movies malign this philosophy as well. It's an interesting shift to watch happen.

I was a very emotional and empathetic person, after I enlisted into the Army back in 2008, that kind if mentality slowly began to deteriorate, I grew thick skin and began to think in a more logical level. Fear, anger, sorrow, anxiety, they can all be controlled. And having served as an Infantryman I've been in my fair share of shitty situations, been forged through pain, and pushed beyond my limits. I wasn't born with a heart of steel, or an iron will, but through my lifetime of tribulations, and because of it, I've come out as a stronger person.

I've found that Stoicism, viking life, and Bushcraft go hand in hand. Marcus Aurelius has a book called "Meditations" that he wrote down for himself to help de-clutter his mind and I fully recommend people read it along with a book called How to be a Stoic by Massimo Pigucci. An example that i feel compares well is... Odin speaks in the Havamal that "A Fool stays awake all night worrying about everything. He's fatigued when the morning comes, and his problems remain unsolved." Marcus says, "Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present". Both ideas suggest that whatever it is you're worried about in the future you can deal with it then, you cannot control it right now. But you can tomorrow. I hope you feel better Bjorn and thank you for your videos! :)

And, yet...his son, Commodus, was a monster of a man. That always made me think, "is it better to be a great philosopher.....or a good father?" Wouldn't a truly great philosopher know that he was raising a monster? Just something that haunts my mind when I read, or discuss him. Commodus is a stain on Marcus' legacy to me, I guess.
@chadm.7371
@chadm.7371 5 лет назад
@@ThomasPaineintheArse I would say that you can both be a philosopher and a good father. But at the end of the day it is ultimately the individuals (or child in this case) responsibility to strive to be a better person. Commodus likely had people buzzing around his ear telling him how to be the best for Rome while Marcus was away at war or fulfilling other social needs. The influence of his soundings, for him personally, out weighed his own personal value and the values he likely learned from Marcus or his teachers. It's sad but that was the path he chose. Marcus' legacy still stands through his writings and will continue to create more Stoics in the future.

I still worked after the incident because I needed income. Today I had trouble getting out of bed and going into the fray of public work... One beautiful woman and I shared a special moment , and here I am getting this wisdom from you. Pure medicine. Yes, we do not need to feel everything all the time. CORRECT. Yes, we can put feelings on a schedule and then at that time feel them, yes, correct! I have before and forgot. I was worried one time, years ago, running a business... so each day after work I sat in my car port and worried for ten minutes... I would act it out... sadder, more strange faces... total worry and fear face... I had fun with it.... then the rest of the time no worry.... I just waited... I wanted to worry at any moment... but like piss and shit.... you hold it and it’s uncomfortable.... but it CAN wait.... then you let it go correctly. As long as your subconscious knows you will let it worry.... and you keep that promise.... it will hold the worry for you... then you can have at it PURELY... feels very cathartic and your not fight n flight all the time. That’s my share. Thank you for your channel. Bright Hearth Fire To You & Yours.

Very wise words,, as they say in the martial arts world, "the greatest victory, is the victory over oneself",, and I think, a big part of self control, is "seeing" your emotions, and how they are controlling you,.. I also think that this is a great part of what people call (these days), "mindfulness",., Thanks for this very worthwhile video, and putting what a lot of us are trying to get our heads around, , into clear, sensible, words,,, All the best,, John ,

Thank you sir for speaking on this matter. I am a mental health counselor who has been in the field for over 15 years and view the emotional incontinence as a puzzle. People need to seriously get their emotions in check because running around like it is a crisis all day every day is NOT good for the body. What people feel are crisis is so small in the realm of things. I like to call it...first world problems.

This is great advice and I'm going to apply it in my life. FB is full of comment sections with people who don't know each other snarling and snapping at one another. The media is constantly triggering off emotional firestorms in people not in control of themselves all you have to do is watch videos of people (we call snowflakes) with signs in the streets of America screaming and crying about everything! And I mean everything!! It's sickening. "We don't have to feel everything." Wisdom for the age...

Hello, Bjorn. Thank you for this. I've been a Stoic for many years and am a "member" of Asatru too. They compliment each other in some ways but I feel they're contradictory in others. However, you do feel everything. It's not about icing yourself over and becoming a Vulcan, it's about much more than that but all Stoics feel everything, they just take a philosophical route to dealing with those feelings and internalizing, learning, and growing from them.

I’ve been that way since childhood as early as four years old (I’m an INTJ female). Years later, I thankfully found a kindred spirit in Marcus Aurelius. Melodramatic people have shouted at me while I look at them poker-faced, and then they become confused and sometimes diffuses the situation. With all due respect and for my own well-being, I am no longer in contact with the people who raised me, whose incessant lack of control and gaslighting tested my patience far more than enough. This is a valuable video. Thank you for posting about it. ♥️

In my youth I was a very emotional person. Like you say autistic temperament. This caused me a lot of needless anxiety and sometimes depression that was often debilitating. In my late twenties I learned how to acknowledge my emotions but I just don't give them any power or control. This has helped me greatly. It allowed me to mature, increased my social development and security and I almost never get anxiety and rarely feel depressed any more. Witch is awesome because I don't have the time or the energy to be waisted on that. Stoicism Is a great skill to have to deal with life issues.Know that doesn't mean block your emotions out completely just don't let them take the steering wheel. Emotions do serve a purpose in life and are part of the inherent human condition. Blocking them out completely has it's negative side affects too. Cheers Bjorn.

About 10 years ago the self realization I had was that how I felt probably wasn't relevant to what I needed to do to live a better life. That was shortly after spending a month in jail. Although only a month I had spent alot of that time looking inwards and reflecting on my life until that point. I had been unfaithful to every women I had been with. I was often in conflict with my employers or the general public because of my attitude. I had been consuming massive amounts of drugs and alcohol on a regular basis for about 5 years which led me to jail. For the record, non violent no victim crime but I failed to go to court. The state frowns upon people not showing up. And going to jail actually saved my life so there was a positive in it. Anyway, I had to not only recognize but accept that I had spent a large part of my life reacting to my emotions and blaming everyone else for how I felt. I spent the first 2 1/2 or so years actively seeking knowledge on how to change. There was no alcohol or drugs at all and that stands true now. There was no sex or relationship during that time. Fortunately that does not stand true now..... If I wasn't at work I was like a sponge trying to absorb anything and everything I could. Spent alot of time reading spiritual health books and the like. My shadow even darkened the door way of a church or two. I didn't really socialize unless it was something involving my new pursuit. The point is I was trying something different because my way had failed. Fast forward to now. If I had to put a label on it I would call myself a practicing stoic rather than inately stoic. But it has become much more natural with time. Comfortable in my own skin for the most part even when my actions or words fall short. Which has also led to me being more accepting and forgiving of others if they fall short. Far from perfect but not the man I was. Found your channel due to my rekindled interest in archery from my youth. I find these mental health videos, actually all your videos, to be very well done. Great information presented intelligently with a calm demeanor. Scenery and locations are beautiful. Thank you.

I'm quite sure it is. And here in the UK, we look at people from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60's as 'The Old School', who soldier on regardless. Now I'm not saying that it's all perfect. In their younger years, stoicism was taken to mean the suppressing of emotions. You simply didn't let people see how you felt. And of course, we now know how unhealthy that can be. But we seem to have veered too far in the other direction, today. Where emotion is allowed to rule the roost. And that too doesn't help. So we need to try the middle ground, where you do let people see how you feel. But get the emotions under control, to allow clear, sensible thought.

Yes, I definitely agree. Stoicism is not about ignoring all of your emotions, it is simply about not letting your emotions affect your decision making. To me emotions are there to inform you of when something is good or bad about the world around you, that is their purpose. Once you determine whether something is good or bad you act on it with your rational brain.

As a very quiet woman, I resonate with this, yet from my feminine interpretation, if that makes sense. As a feminine woman, I feel and emote intensely, yet richly, it’s a superpower, and I now know how to control and channel them into influence and submission and encouragement-which is key for an emotional person(woman). The what, the when, and the how I feel about things are of my choosing instead of being tossed about like a boat on a rough sea. For me, I feel this is a polar compliment to a masculine man’s stoicism, which I respect, support, and understand the value so much more after this video. Thank you.

Peel an onion. Put some BROWN sugar in a small bowl and add a thin layer of onion slices... then another layer of BROWN sugar and repeat until the bowl is filled up. Llet it rest for a couple of hours, and with a table spoon get some of the juice that is on top (a table-spoon) and drink it several times a day. A peeled onion just by the bedside also might help a lot (mainly the cough...). Get well…

Being stoic, I think, is the equivalent of being a grown up person. There are lots of "adults" out there that have not grown up mentally. Shockingly many. I am not the most stoic character myself, but even as a kid I have always at least tried to think things up before i act. And have been called a coward many times because of my "slow acting" and calculating nature. Especially now as a parent, I think my daughter deserves a dad who is the same dad today, tomorrow and the days to come as well. A safe dad. Of course a parent should show their emotions to a child to a certain degree, to let them know it's ok to feel like this and that and to explain them why, but you must be an example to them and not let yourself act solely on feelings. Talk to your children, people. But mind what you say.
