How Streets Of Rogue is a tabletop RPG disguised as a roguelike

Streets of Rogue is a dystopian roguelike that avoids a lot of the limitations of player agency that many RPGs, even tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons, often fall into. Using some entertaining Streets of Rogue gameplay stories and some nerdy RPG theory, let me tell you why Streets of Rogue is a rules-light video game, and why it’s one that I just Can’t Stop Playing. Oh, and thanks to Logitech G and the G432 7.1 Surround Sound gaming headset for sponsoring this video. Check out the tech behind the G432 over on the Logitech G site: bit.ly/2FkTkbi
We knew as soon as we finished our Streets of Rogue review that this is a game we Can’t Stop Playing. You can read the written Streets of Rogue PC review at Rock Paper Shotgun: The Site (www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019.... This Streets of Rogue impressions video is part of a new RPS series both on the site and on this channel where we all talk a bunch about a game that we’ve fallen in love with. If you want to read some more of us talking about Streets of Rogue 2019, then check out the Streets of Rogue tag on RPS here: www.rockpapershotgun.com/game.... This video has Astrid’s Streets of Rogue impressions, explaining how it uses a tabletop RPG approach to storytelling to supercharge its roguelike action.
Streets of Rogue Steam is in Early Access and is constantly getting fresh new updates that balance the game and add new Streets of Rogue gameplay features. This Streets of Rogue analysis video shows you some gameplay basics and aims to tell you why its open-endedness is less like Dungeons and Dragons and more like a rules-light RPG. Part of the fun is seeing the mad stories generated by the game, so please do share your own adventures with us in the comments. And if you have any questions about Streets of Rogue, or what to expect from it, please write them below and we’ll answer them. This is Streets of Rogue PC gameplay, but the game is also available on PS4, Xbox One and Switch. Cor, imagine Streets of Rogue switch - all that oddness in your pocket. Fun!
If you liked this Streets of Rogue video essay, why not give it a like and subscribe to Rock Paper Shotgun for more stuff like this? You can check out some more of our videos too. I think it's interesting that the feeling of a rules-light RPG in Streets doesn't come from fewer rules, but the interaction of a greater number of simple ones. When you set the office worker on fire, he runs away from you. When something on fire crosses a puddle of oil, the fire spreads across its whole surface. Wooden walls touched by fire will burn away, leaving the safe exposed. And so on

It's called emergent gameplay by the guy who made Half Life.

I love games made of "systems" like this, and it feels like it is rarely catered to. Part of the reason it was always so difficult to explain to people why I loved postal 2.

I was a gorilla with 3 clones of myself. When I went to clone a 4th time I had to fight a guy so I hit him into a wall with a bat. He proceeds to fly through two rooms and dies. I love this game.

I'm happy to see this game get some recognition. Been around since the Beta and I have failed every run with my favorite character, the Thief. Which is not a rogue two knives and a desire to dodge roll everywhere, but your standard black and white striped bandit from old media. The worlds crappiest thief is my main and enjoy each and every sneak-ish run. Quite fun, especially considering it's my first Rogue-Lite/Like.

This game really deserves more publicity and attention, it's so entertaining and open ended. I sincerely enjoyed the various roles and how much they change up how you play the game.

"Instead of saying no but [...] say[s] Yes, and" 'No, but' and 'Yes, and' are both important tools. You choose whether the request is reasonable considering the characters abilities and other factors. "No, and" happens sometimes too, though that one is mostly restricted to outcomes and not choice assessment. While you should default to 'yes,' 'yes and,' or 'yes but,' you do not outright avoid the 'no' variants. They are important.

To be honest in d&d if you are a small creature that can possess bodies and have the size to fit into a toilet pipe with some short of water breathing tool then you could do what the shapeshifter did in this game it just more complex and convoluted and you need a nice dm to do it. I think a tiny pipe of a city would be a hilarious dungeon.

There's really only one big RU-vidr who is playing SoR daily. You and the Streets of Rogue crew should start uploading co-op videos! I'd love to watch a co-op playthrough as I don't really have anyone else to play with at the moment.

He says that every character in the game is built on twenty points, but im pretty sure that the premade characters cheat that because Matt can personally balance them.
@samsibbens8164
@samsibbens8164 3 года назад
Yep, the werewolf is actually below 20 points and the cop would be above. For the cop it makes sense, if "The Law" didn't cost that much, people would throw it on all their characters

Just recently got this game on Switch, still trying to learn the ins and outs. I can get to at least floor 1-3 before I end up getting killed. This game is nuts and so hilarious and DIFFICULT! Then again I don't have anyone to play with so I try solo runs so that could be why I can't get far lol

You're pretty good at this video thing yanno Astrid. Inject a pretty impressed tone of voice into that and imagine I'm making that face where one's mouth goes ^ kinda like :< but in like a happy interested approving way, and add a couple light head nods to cement the positive impression. That being said - how much of a bullet hell does this become? It looks great but it makes me think of every roguelite I bounce off ala Isaac. There's only so much patience I have for dodging pixels and dying to them repeatedly, which is to say I have none. But I really wanted to try this out if there's a chance that it is not indeed like that.
@Jaffameister

It plays out in such a way that it doesn't get very bullet hell-ish at all actually! Part of why I stuck with it so much compared to a lot of other roguelikes.

I haven't even watched the video yet, but already I must agree. I don't like OSR, but I keep playing that if you want a cyberpunk OSR game that focuses on the dungeon crawling aspect without leaving aside the social side, Streets of Rogue is an excellent starting point.

I'm confused. I mean, someone had to code that toilet hopping stuff in the game, right? Right? It's not like someone forbids you to travel through toilet in Deus Ex, but such a function isn't coded into the game. They decided to focus on other things than toilet travel. Right?
