How Stress and Caffeine Trigger Insulin Resistance: Insights from Dr. Ben Bikman

Dr. Ben Bikman highlights insulin resistance as a prevalent global health issue, identifying stress as a primary cause. He defines stress through elevated levels of cortisol and epinephrine (adrenaline), both of which can quickly induce insulin resistance.
One common source of elevated adrenaline is caffeine. Dr. Bikman references a study demonstrating that caffeine consumption significantly increases insulin secretion when carbohydrates are consumed, making insulin work harder to reduce blood sugar levels. He advises mindfulness regarding daily caffeine intake to manage insulin resistance more effectively.

I would think that unless you are consuming caffeine in excess, this shouldn't be an issue for carnivore and keto folk. I've heard Dr. Bikman himself say he consumes yerba mate tea in the morning, and that has caffeine about equal to a cup of coffee.

I didn’t want to believe it, but I had a hormone test including cortisol with and without caffeine, and after 20 oz coffee, my cortisol went way above the normal range. That was in the context of a very low carb animal-based diet. Now I stick to 1/2 caff or decaf.

Adding my question to others. How much increase if drinking coffee and no carbs? Does it matter if the carbs are with the coffee or at another meal? I notice you're saying caffeine. So when being mindful of amount does it mean tea or cocoa? Does it matter if 2 cups in the morning versus 2 cups divided over the day? I would love a longer video on this from you. @Hertz2laugh

based on what Dr. Bikman said, it seems like caffeine is an amplifier, but not a source of elevated insulin. So, if you are on a very-low carb diet, regular caffeine probably isn't a big deal. But the more carbs you eat per day, the more caffeine intake becomes relevant. 0 x 2 = 0 1 x 2 = 2 2 x 2 = 4 Etc.

@@Hertz2laugh Yes, very possibly. My primary interest is in managing my T2D using keto diet, intermittent fasting and regular exercise. I drink 12 oz. of caffeinated coffee every morning (but no other caffeine the rest of the day), and I have seen numerous conflicting sources about whether caffeine raises blood sugar or has no effect. I have yet to get my A1c down into the normal range, and I need all the help I can get. I'm a 59-yo male, started with an A1c of 12.1 and I've gone from 190 lbs to 155 and the best A1c I've seen yet is 6.3. If switching to decaf will help at all, I'll do it. Great video, as always, professor. You said, "Cortisol and epinephrine that are increased during a stressed state can acutely or rapidly cause insulin resistance. When you have elevated epinephrine levels, one stimulus that will increase your epinephrine is caffeine." This is fascinating. My question is: Does caffeine ingestion affect insulin resistance in the same way when you are not in a stressed state, in fact, when you are chilled and in a relaxed state?

From all my research, it seems that anything you consume that has a taste to it can trigger a temporary rise in insulin, which lowers blood sugar, which in turn stimulates the release of ghrelin, the hunger hormone. Sticking to plain water should allow you to avoid that.

Maybe your high levels of glucose while fasting is due to the body use from what it has in storage for when it's needed. I heard that the body uses what's in storage, first glucose, then protein to keep us going until our next meal.

I take this to mean lower your carb or at least refined carb intake, dramatically if you like me are a coffee drinker and easily stressed or living a stressed life, and reduce caffeine to two???? Cups a day, maybe increase herbal teas if you need that hot cup feeling in your hands. This might explain to me why my insulin is high and I’m likely insulin resistant as I’ve always been stresses, hypertensive and loved my carb. I did drastically reduce my carbs I favour of protein and fat a few years ago and lost big weight, lowered my A1c to 5 and loved it but slipped off the bandwagon. Time to do it again.

Coffee high in Chlorogenic acid actually helps with blood sugar and can be a cheat code when you are eating a high carb meals in my experience. I have noticed in the past when I drank coffee high in CLA I lost weight and it reduced my hunger even when I was not eating best foods or even exercising. I was basically not putting much effort into losing weight. I had Mcdonalds and Burger King for breakfast. That is the difference adding coffee high in CLA had in regulating my blood sugar and reducing hunger. A meal like that without adding the coffee high in CLA would have destroyed my blood sugar and made me hungry again within a couple hours.

It is like a cheat code. There is also a tea that has a similar effect called Yerba Mate. Basically Yerba Mate is beneficial when you eat a crappy diet. There is studies to prove it.
