Thanks to NordVPN for sponsoring this video! Thanks to our sponsors we can afford lot of nice toys like that 150 ton force sensor. If you need VPN and wan't to support the channel go to NordVPN.com/hydraulicpress and or use code HYDRAULICPRESS to to get 75% off a 3 year plan. I have been using NordVPN now almost 6 months and I have been really satisfied with it.

Try a single spike in the center of the toe cap. The spikes because of the angle on that part of the cap.
@Breakthehabbitzz

Keep in mind safety shoes are designed for quick impacts to save your foot - like dropping something really heavy. Not continuous pressure. That's why people lose their toes if they try to drive a forklift over them, as the shoes are designed for impact, not load.

Maybe new try with Smahinator 5 000 000 ;)
@reggiep75
@reggiep75 5 лет назад
These tests would only be suitable to determine whether there was a difference in the load resistance capacities but all of footwear will have had to passed tests and standards to even be on the shelves for sale. A more suitable test would be the Smashinator 5,000,000 on all footwear to see which survives the best! EDIT: Just realised the above comment appeared once I'd refreshed my browser but we've all reached the same conclusion regarding impact testing and not load testing.
@Monkeh616
@Monkeh616 5 лет назад
That would be because even a small forklift weighs around 3-4 tonnes without a load, and if you try and drive it over something most of that will come down on the offending wheel - and on a very small point to boot (pun intended). Now, a small car should go right on over as long as it's slow - but I'm not volunteering to put my foot in that boot.

It's not surprising both safety boots took the same load. If Finland is anything like Canada, both boots will be made to the same legal safety standards and there's no great marketing advantage to making them any stronger, so they won't.
@HydraulicPressChannel
@HydraulicPressChannel 5 лет назад
Yep I think there is somekind of standards for the impact strength for the shoes. The bottom was still harder on expensive ones but it might be that the cheap ones didn't have all the ratings that expensive ones have.

@@HydraulicPressChannel ISO 20345 - 200 joule impact rating for toe caps. Unsurprisingly, 2000kgf-cm is about 200 joules. Oh, and 15kN compression - that's about 1500kg. I'm not sure how far they're allowed to move under that load, possibly not at all. All safety footwear sold in the EU must meet the requirements of ISO 20345 - so in terms of basic safety they're all equivalent. In terms of getting my fat size 12 feet in them (that's a 47 for you), definitely not all the same!

I’ve got a suggestion that may help keep the spikes from bending as easily. Add a second floating plate, similar to the base plate, above the the item you’re going to smash. This floating plate will give the spikes horizontal support. If one spike deflects, the plate will transfer the load over all the spikes instead of just one. And since it’s floating, it’ll just slide upward not interfering with the downward pressure. Anyway, just a small suggestion.

*Captain here* yes they use plastic because metal ones actually do more damage if it get crushed and doesnt bounce back, when plastic ones bounce back till a certain point... and if it does get crush you dont have metal in your foot. also is lighter, so yeah, similar reasons why also they don't make metal helmets.

Also works other way. In case of hot environment of case of activity related heat exposure it won't conduct heat to the feet. Walking on hot freshly heated surfaces, being around hot machinery etc. Many safety shoes include heat resistant soles and other heat related safety features in addition to kinetic protection. So using non metallic nose cap and nail protector makes sense for that also. Frankly for longest time metal was used not for optimal performance, but because it was the only thing that worked at all. Plus cost. However if one finds another way it is more optimal, since metals have many bad sides for PPE use. Heat, electricity, weight and so on.

I had a feeling they would be the same. I guess for the more expensive ones, in my experience, you are paying for durability and comfort and other features over the cheaper ones. When i was younger i would buy cheap safety boots, but soon learnt that paying for more expensive ones were better for my feet, and wallet. Never cheap out on safety shoes imo.

From my experience wearing steel/safety toe boots for over 30 years, I can tell you that the price difference is directly related to comfort and durability and has little to do with the level of protection offered. Interesting to see how much punishment they could take, though.

I know this is somewhat of a joke but I actually have a bit of info. For a BRZ, about 150lbs for the roof, and 1500lbs towing, all hardware included for both. Don't ask how I know lol. Also it's recommended against in the documentation and whatnot. But I'd say that any other model is probably at least as much as the BRZ if not more. And this is in the US where they severely under-rate stuff for 'safety.'

Don't forget that having steel inside the shoe will definitely mess up your feet a lot more than the plastic if the shoe were to fail. For this reason the more expensive option is safer in case it breaks.

Safety shoes could be made better by also having a steel strap below the toes and extending the steel to the sole on the sides to give the steel something to stand on. Reinforcing the back edge and top ridge while adding an angle that points forward and a slick top so you slip out of a crushing load are also good ideas. ~one engineer

That plastic is called "Kevlar" which is a very dense plastic and its molecules are paralleled, which is increasing its tensile strength. The typical protection is made of kevlar nowadays, but hardened steel tips are still used and is a cheaper alternative, but are much heavier to walk around with.

I dont know if anybody said this already but the more expensive shoes have plastic because it doesnt get as cold as a steel plate, these shoes also have a polycarbonate plate underneath inside the sole. If this would have been made of steel like in the cheaper boot it would have been both heavy and cold. These boots are made for outdoor work in Nordic climates. Fun fact: steel toes are designed to cut your toes off under heavy pressure, because if they were not designed that way then they would crush your toes. The reason is because it is much easier for a doctor to sew your toes back on rather than deal with squashed toes that are surgically unrepairable.

Plastic toe cap is better in cold weather since it doesn't conduct as much heat away from the toes. Steel toe cap can be really really cold and even result in frostbite if you are unlucky.. Aluminium would be even worse... I have a pair of Sievi work boots, just like those in the video, I have used them for ten winters in really tough conditions and they still hold together. Only real damages are a broken zipper pull, and sadly, a hole in the leather at the back edge of the toe cap. So, in my experience they are definitely worth 200€ if you can spend it. With that said, quality work shoe manufacturers (like Sievi) should adress the problem of the toe cap wearing through the leather.

I don't think you want to be going off price as much as the steel cap rating itself. Higher the rating, the more pressure it will take to bend the cap. Also the shoes are designed to cut your toes off cleanly, in case of an accident. So they can be sown back on easily.

Oh this is pretty interesting! I had a pair of work shoes from my job that had these weird plastic tips in it, they where super comfortable and pretty well made! tho at a part of the heel of the shoe my own heel started to feel uncomfortable. they costed about 120 euros then i went to just a regular super market and bought a pair (couldnt walk in those shoes anymore so i tried anything really) for 30 euros, with steel noses in them instead of the plastic ones! they where a litle bit less comfortable (the sole part of it was not that great) but i could walk again. its pretty impressive to see what happens! nice video!

Nice video, but i would have liked if you had told us more about the shoes that you were testing, because the toe protector isn't the only part of the shoe.. like i have 2 pairs of "safety"shoes 1. has toe protector and nothing else ~30 euros 2. has toe protector, nail protector, anti static, chemical resistance, oil resistance, anti slippery (even with oil), heat resistance (like if you weld and liquid metal drops on the shoe, it won't go through).. etc... and these cost a lot more than 30 euros :) Also if you work outdoors, plastic/wood and maybe aluminium toe protector is alot better than steel one... It's not like your toes freeze off in a second, but steel ones feel a lot more cold and it takes longer for them to warm up again.. But any safety shoe is better than none, if something drops on you foot :)

how about welding some wedge shaped pieces of steel to the spikes? make tham sharp and pointy for extra destruction or maybe less spikes but thicker instead of 9x5 maybe 5x5 or 4x4 and attach them with screws from the back the spikes sit in a hole half the way in to the top plate, the spikes can be fixed with allan bolts that are recessed this way you can quickly change the demaged spikes but still have a sturdy construction with a flat surface to press on
