So update. None of the pins failed. It has to do with the pivot. Too tight and the bar now does not engage and you have all the up-and-down rattle if you back it off the bar will engage but then you have a bunch of side to side rattle. And I can’t get it to operate like you saw in the video prior to batoning. 👍

I would like to see what it would take to fail completely. I do like the quickness of this lock to deploy and fold away. It just hasn’t compelled me enough to unseat the AD10 in my pocket. It is just so comfortable in hand. As well as the confidence inspiring strength of the Triad lock. I appreciate the videos. Your video on the Rajah has made me think about picking up one. I had not considered a recurve blade before that. Thanks for the videos.

@@john0270 Oops, that was an unintentionally mistype on my part. I meant Triad as that was part of the point I was making. Thanks for pointing it out so that nobody gets confused. I bought the AD10 in large part because of the Triad lock. I still would like to see what it takes to fail the new Atlas lock completely. Maybe Joe X will do it.

Not sure if one has more moving parts than the other. Both have a moving lock bar, both have a spring that gets compressed, both have a blade that moves. Both strong in a weight hang, but the TRI-AD lock is clearly better at shock. Which is likely the type of abuse someone would put their knife thru. Can't really think of something I would do that would hang 400lbs off the handle of the knife. And where I have seen TRI-AD equipped knives fail, is either the blade breaks, or the pivot pin breaks or comes out. The lock area itself holds up. I trust the TRI-AD over any other knife lock. And even over some smaller fixed blades. Anyway, just my two cents, great video.

Atlas seems to be a very strong lock that is easier to actuate than the tri-ad but giving up some durability. I think that it is a fair trade off. I wonder how the Shark lock will fair under the same testing!
@Youtube-Censorship-Police
@Youtube-Censorship-Police 7 месяцев назад
the difference between the triad and the atlas is that the triad is L and keel-shaped, so it's self-adjusting, that why you won't get wiggle. the atlas is more like the shark-lock and doesn't have that clever feature, if there's even the slightest bit of deformation you will instantly feel it. it's just a flickedy-flick design for fun, inferior in strength and durability. thanks for the testing, this video was really insightful!

I've carried the now discontinued Triad ProLite folder for quite a few years. I believe it was discontinued because those budget folders are not smooth openers and they opted to add liners in later models. But I carry it for utility only so I don't care. I've had liner locks close on me while drilling a hole. Never again. When I can't carry my fixed blades, it's Triad only for me. Needless to say, I'm no collector.

It’s always impressive to see a pocket “able” to do what a fixed blade can without breaking or injuring yourself. It shouldn’t be done but good to know that in a situation you can depend on your folder to handle this type of abuse.

Why not? They are not replacing the Tri-AD or anything. Just introduced a new lock for people who want a still very strong lock which has better ergonomics. ATLAS is arguably more ergonomic and safer for daily use, with its one-handed "fingers never in the path of the blade" disengagement. Tri-AD is great in a lot of situations but if iffy as heck to use when you only have one hand available.

It because of the lock design, the triad lock pushes a L shape bar down to lock the blade, so it compensate for any deformed metal from the impact... while the atlas lock pushes horizontally, if the metal is deformed in the bar vertically, its does not compensate, therefore it wiggles.

Either way great job reminding people never do this or at least only in emergency situations. The Engage is just a POS, there's just no way it can compete against the Recon 1, and I pretty much know that's no surprise to anyone.

I bought an Engage when they first released. It's not a bad knife, fun locking mechanism as you said. The Recon 1 & AD10 are still probably better models for less money. After seeing the test you did it shows how reliable the Tri-Ad lock really is. My Engage started getting slight vertical blade play after cutting up some plastic oil containers at work, which surprised me considering it wasn't even an abusive task for an overbuilt type of knife. Cold Steel's classic designs (mostly from Andrew Demko) are my preference over their newer models.

Trying to take on the master lock designer (Mr Andrew Demko) with a 'sort of imitation' shark lock and failed. I have an SR1, SR1 Lite, Recon 1 & Code 4 all with Tri-ad locks (all over 5 years old) and all have taken a beating and still work flawlessly (even if showing signs of wear). No real reason why lock & pivot shouldn't work after light abuse - just quality control issue I suspect OR the marketing people have overstated the toughness. Love the vid.

If it is something even minor damaged - deformed, I wouldn´t buy the lock (knives with it) anymore. The Triad is proven so no need to change really. Seemed like a strong, interesting and fidgety lock to mess around with and so I bought myself a Cold Steel Karve. It has this bizarre issue, where every five or so flicks, the lock gets stuck and requires quite a bit of thumb force to disengage. Seems to be on the harder flicks. Most of the flicks, the lock is smooth as butter but then I flick a bit harder and it sticks like that. I used KPL on all the contact surfaces and tried to work it loose for an hour. So far - no luck. Then again, my Recon 1 also had a weird intermittent lock stick like that, combined with detent lash afterwards. I almost sent it back but it then just stopped doing that and has been smooth and reliable since. I'm hoping for the same with this Karve. It's a really nice and cool looking knife otherwise. UPDATE: I exchanged my Karve for another copy and that one is smooth as butter all the time.

I think you should talk about the elephant in the room in this design… the Demko AD20 and 20.5. The atlas seems to be a direct shot over the bow of Demko’s shark lock design. And I also love my Recon 1.

I think the atlas lock is a good all round lock, like the axis. And I'd say it's still less likely to leave you bleeding than any liner, frame, or button lock, and doesn't have weak omega springs.

Triad is definitely strongest..but shard does this with zero issues. (I did notice that some models needed to be tuned, small bit of lock bounce but goes straight back into true..and no damage)

shark lock sucks too! i had 2 ad20.5, the first one developed vertical play after 2 days of fidgeting and light cutting tasks (mainly food), the 2nd one which i got as a replacement for nr. 1 had even worse lock rock straight out of the box. i was really disappointed, sent it back and got a kizer mini begleiter in m390 and fragtanium scales for $30 less and is a way better knife overall. btw: one of my ad20.5 had such a bad grind that the blade looked like a recurve lol.

This confirms the theory that more elements you add, the less secure it will be as the weakest link will make the lock unstable. Cold steel has to sell something new that's cooler to keep up with the competition. Now that they make the "strongest" lock in the world, what to do? Make an even "better" lock... Well, it seems locks are not everything in a knife world. How about starting to churn out Exclusive Maniago Cold Steel knives with better quality? Zero tolerance has the looks and quality. Extrema Ratio has the brandname and the looks AND quality. Limited editions are also good. But don't you think the "Worlds best lock" is just not good enough? When people buy knives for the feeling, the brand image they want to be associated with and end up with a lock, which is in any case as good as any. You are not abusing your folder anyways, so the strongest lock is just a phrase that breaks down with this new attempt. Or do people associate themselves with overgrown security guys slashing at hanging meat? I think Cold Steel should create a comic-book series or a real story to differentiate itself from the average. How is Victorinox still on the market with the poor slipjoint?

The only folding knife I own that I would trust for a heavy use survival situation is my cold steel ak47 the triad lock system is amazing and it is built like a tank. However I would prefer a good fixed blade for heavy use like battoning ect or even better a hawk.

You know what’s a sweet ass knife for a slicer but not hard use is the praxis with the gold fleck carbon fiber clear scales on wmk . I think it was $60 and a deal at that imo . The carbon fiber is shiny and parts are matte where the cf is on the surface and it makes the grip so damn good . They nailed it . Or the 2 Migurons , velona and akrI 2 are so well done for 2 sweet knives totaling under $100 with a code . Have a great weekend man . I like to share some good info when I come across decent knives I think people will find value in .

soon as I saw them announce that at the blade show. I said to myself why the hell can't they leave anything alone. big changes thinking they're better. is why they may not be as successful as Lord Thompson! I totally agree it was built and designed for the office flicking crowd!! I hate videos for a guy flick the knife 25 times in 5 minutes! Andrew Demko is not a flicker kind of guy! I can see their slowly, going against the grain, that made Cold steel what it is. I haven't bought a cold steel folder since, GSM came into the picture. didn't my sandrin polyhedral tungsten carbide knife have basically that same type of lock system? I think so.

My local hardware store is selling the engage atm. They have been for the last 5 or so months. I looked over to the left of them and went for the range boss, instead. I've been thinking that when I had a little extra jingle, I'd pick it up, but now that I watched your video here, I'll save my money. I already carry ether the range boss and the Espada g10. Or the range boss and an sr1 lite tanto. I think im good for a while but enevitably, in a few months, I'll buy a knife to make myself feel good 😆

None of the pins failed. It has to do with the pivot. Too tight in the bar now does not engage and you have all the up-and-down rattle if you back it off the bar will engage but then you have a bunch of side to side rattle. And I can’t get it to operate like you saw in the video prior to batoning.
