How do sunglasses actually work? How can some types cause damage to your eyes? And why do astronauts wear glasses made of gold? Kate explains all.

Too much light can be a bad thing, and our bodies, with their deep set eyes shielded by bushy brows, are already designed to limit the amount that sneaks in. It is thought that the first sunglasses were made from caribou horns with tiny slits in them that restricted the amount of light entering the eye.
Sunglass design has come a long way since then. Light from the high energy end of the spectrum can cause damage to the body’s cells, by breaking chemical bonds in the molecules such as DNA.
So how do sunglasses protect you? Light absorbing particles in the glasses block some of the light, reducing the amount that reaches the eye. Lenses tinted with colour, such as amber or brown , can block out potentially dangerous blue light. Most importantly, sunglasses - or good sunglasses, at least - block out UV rays. But if your glasses don’t have 100% UV protection, then they’ll cause damage, as your pupils will dilate to accommodate the darker view the tint is giving, but won’t then protect you from the increased UV rays that will flood into your wide open eyes.
This film is part of our new series that will provide the blueprint for a scientifically perfect summer. From sweating to hay fever, insects to jet lag, Kate Mulcahy will help you hack summer to engineer the perfect season. Taking a different topic each Thursday, the videos will gradually build up an equation for summer perfection; a summer survival guide certified by science.

Lack of exposure to high intensity light is implicated in giving children myopia (short sightedness) - so are the light levels that their eyes would get whilst wearing sunglasses outside high enough to prevent the myopia (assuming they only actually wear them on very sunny days, not 24/7/365 because they look cool!)?

Disliking because of incorrect or at the very least misleading information regarding UV light.

What about polarized sun glasses? We use them for fishing to stop sun glare on the water.

Several points. First, I do not think anything can claim 100% UV block. You might get to 99.995% but never 100%. ANSI Z80.3-2001 also specifies UV A/B transmittance. Polycarbonate lenses will also block some level of UV light. Unless you have Quartz lenses you have some level of UV protection above nothing or slit glasses. Perhaps not the required level but some. Many lenses come with standard coatings, e.g. scratch and UV. So regular glasses may be some of protection.

Can we talk about blue blocking glasses, please. We have to be wary of the sun's light.....but not the ARTIFICIAL light most people in 1st world countries binge on with their blue light emitting electronic devices and blue light emitting indoor bulbs after sunset?!?!? Yeahh gimme a break

What kind of sunglasses do not protect against UV? Almost all glass do...
@sabaca304
@sabaca304 9 лет назад
Borley4 Actually many don't because it doesn't matter to most people. What unfortunately matters the most to people (like with everything you can wear) is how it looks and not what it does.
@he1986
@he1986 9 лет назад
Sabaca ok, but why? As you may know, you cannot get sun tan behind windows, thats becuase it blocks UV... as all glass do.
@rydude998
@rydude998 9 лет назад
Borley4 This is untrue, I fear somewhere along the lines you've been mislead. Plastic* doesn't inherently block UV rays. Only coated plastics* will block UV light so sunglasses that you buy at the Dollar Store and other cheap locations probably won't be properly protected. Most sunglasses are made with plastic, not glass, which is in fact an effective UVB blocker. However in order to block UVA and UVB the glass does in fact have to be treated as well. You can get a sunburn from sitting by an untreated window. Most household windows are probably treated though.

Borley4 Common glass blocks UV, but plastic does not. Not without special coatings and some added chemicals. And most sunglasses lenses are made of plastic to reduce weight and cost. So beware of cheap lenses.

Alex Arkhipov ^this, my apologies, I was thinking plastic as I wrote glass. This is correct though.

@obadjahrs
@obadjahrs 9 лет назад
The probability of 2 photons of half the energy needed tot break a bond colliding at the same time is so incredibly low that for the purpose of this video, this was accurate enough.

This guy should be more concerned with his posture than whether to wear sunglasses, a lot more long-term, sometimes irreversible health implications from bad posture.
