I,'m a retired 80 yr old industrial electrician who get my electrical knowledge from Audels Electrical libraries. (qv). You have brought head shaking awe with the new stuff to this old bird. Thanks a lot,I'm buying a Noco for my garden tractor ( 20 HP single cylinder engine), It needs a big battery, but this Noco puppy will solve the problem and a handy trunk item in the car as well. . I'm wondering what you're going to write about in 60 Years. P.S. I apprenticed with an Electrician Master Journeyman Frank Owens 1n 1959. He had been John Logie Baird 's Apprentice in Scotland . Mechanical Colour Television Eh What Lad.!!! Thanks Again.
Thank you for your comments! Newer supercapacitors do not have a step change in energy density, thus their uses are unchanged. One of the most interesting mainstream uses of supercapacitors recently has been the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 stylus.
Similar concept to torque and power in ICEs. You can have more working force being put out at a slower rate like in a diesel engine (high tq, low hp) or high output rate and low to moderate working force like in a performance gasoline engine (low to med tq, high hp). Like comparing Lithium ion cells to a super capacitors.
Thank you for such an lucid explanation. There are new developments which allow super capacitors to replace lead acid or lithium ion batteries. Can you shed light on that.
Great video and thanks for the links. I currently have Dyna-batt manufacturers ID 5575B. It's a 12V, dry cell battery, 16amps hrs, and it is 4 years old. The CCA on it is around 280 and I live in NE and on days where its under 50 degrees, the car struggles to start. I want to maintain the weight savings and I like the idea of a supercapacitor, in parallel. What kind and how many would I need to help boost this battery? A schematic, or links to what I can buy would be awesome. Thanks!
Your chosen name say's it all for your knowledge of capacitance friend! Mark Twain said; "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt!?"
I suggest A mechanical energy storage Device be fabricated in the system a motor generator flywheel assembly gimbally mounted. This instant storage device will take as mutch power as you can hit it with from reverse electric braking or turbine generator overflow. A voltage regulator and combined with supercapicitors would be a perfect set up for a auto a race car a airplane a helicopter. Energy can be instantly pulled from the gimbally and directed into the drive motors.
what are the different combinations of supercapacitors used to store the charge generated by the traction system and to discharge this charge to the battery
Can you make a video on graphene super capacitors and also their advantages over the present Tesla 's lithium ion batteries and also their drawbacks when compared to the lithium ion batteries
The first one being that while they have real potentia to compete along lithium batteries they haven't been able to reach commercialization. Only for 'scanning' purposes... 😒😏
What do you think of using a Lithium ion Battery and a super cap together for a wind turbine energy storage solution. or do you think the cap will discharge to fast into the battery causing it to explode.
Nice Video and good explanation but I miss the explanation why all supercapacitors are limited to 2,7 Volts. Why is it impossible to build single cell supercaps at 10V or 30V ?
The electrochemical stability window of the electrolyte prevents higher voltage being used. At 10V, the electrolyte would breakdown, causing gassing, and irreversible capacity loss.
it's currently limited to 3 volts ultra capacitors You can build a module that is 10 or 30 volts (in serial ) you will need a lot of them in parallel for HIGH capacity
Following the Mazda 3 example, I would likr to know how this is used/applied on a eolic turbine application, could be a great ilustration and massive use of super capacitors
Thanks for your time. Definitely interested in combined capacitor/battery. I use a lot of cordless tools and those that require high draw startup or occasional high amp (saws) that seem to deplete batteries very quickly. Then two hours to recharge. Wondering if the capacitors would help?
They certainly would. You could combine your batteries with the supercapacitors; as the supercapacitors would provide the bulk of the power, the batteries can operate in a more efficient region and hence last longer, and continue to function over a wider SoC window. Lots of power tool companies are looking to integrate supercapacitors into their energy storage systems for power tools.
very interesting topic, thanks for doing this video. would you think a hybrid battery for an ebike would be worth doing? maybe for a touring ebike in a an area of high altitude with lots of up and downhill for regenerative braking to chanrge the supercap portion of the battery.
I saw that somebody is using super capacitors for spot welding with two copper rods (Nickel strip to 18650 batteries). How safe is this? It is almost a short circuit for capacitor for short time.
filipina santos ..super capacitors can be used with solar panels. im experimenting now with my solar powered gardem led lights. so far its good results but not finished yet. super capacitor banks are expensive but rechargable batteries always going bad so im designing my own system. ill use zenors. or controller as usual.
+filipina santos Yes, though think carefully about the number you would need for your energy requirement, paying particular attention to the energy stored within the voltage range of your inverter.
I have worked in electronics and as an electrician my whole life. And to this very day I still do not know how to determine which capacitor to use. I've always just had to replace them with the same type. But determining which one to use for a project has always baffled me. Is there a good video to understand the concepts of using capacitors in place of batteries? With specifics in determining the power output and voltage - in relation to capacitance?
a capacitor has 2 numbers the voltage and the capacity so depending how the circuit is build you can replace capacitor the some voltage and if you have the space you can go for higher capacity it the same as batteries when you replace a battery you need the same voltage but you can always put a bigger one in amps
+Tech Help A lithium ion battery will typically have a maximum voltage of 4.2V and minimum of 2.5V, with an average of 3.6V. A supercapactitor typically has a maximum voltage of 2.7V, and voltage decays linearly to 0V.
What I need to know is the proper mixture for the ionic solution, when using KOH "potassium hydroxide" I dont know the correct portion of DI water and KOH to use. any help would be greatly appreciated, im trying to make some working cells at home to learn more about supercapacitors and to do some research and development.
Is there a way to translate a supercap's stats to an equivalent of battery power? I ask because I would like to learn what would be required to replace a bank of batteries in an off-grid set-up with supercapacitors.
Hello, Can you please share some more circuit information about EVTECH. How to use super capaciotrs more efficiently with battery, any example circuit will be fine for my understanding. Much appreciate your effort for sharing this video.
+Gilbert Dsilva some are considering it, though the problem is that they do not store enough energy for a full replacement, therefore they would have to be incorporated alongside another form of energy storage such as a smaller lead acid battery
Hello everyone. I do not know if it is possible to dream of an ultrascapacitor with a diameter of 10 cm and a length of 1 m and which will be connected in series. I remain open to any other proposals from you cordially
I doubt it, but why would a 1m length be required? Check out my new video on battery degradation - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XLnBg25JoHg.html
In the "Great Britain" way of speaking (many accents) and as an American, I am screwed understanding some of these videos. I acknowledge it is nobody's short coming but my own. Every time something is said that is very important, ALL I hear is gibberish. So fuc me. It's like mothers listening to what their very young children are saying. Other people will always ask "what are they saying" and the mother knows exactly what is said but few do. Best wishes to all and thumbs up for sure.
Here is some more British English for you! I think this is my favourite comment on my channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bNd-yJtRPhk.html
what is more suitable for a portable heating device? Liion batteries with enough Amps or Liions + super capacitors? lets say the heaters needs around 500W. with enough batteries that should be ok. but what if I need 700W or more, can I add a supercap to the Liions and "charge the cap" so it delivers 700W? Liion. 36V with discharge15A = 540W Liion. 36V with 15A = 540W + supercapacitor...... can this now deliver 700W ? possible?
thanks!!! for my understanding: the heating coils would draw 15A from the batteries. (at 36V) would they also draw 15A from a Capacitor or would the capacitor "deliver" more amps (lets say 30A) and heat them up faster? which specs should a capacitor have to deliver 36V 15A-30A? (for 10minutes)
as per paul zbar, you cannot use any kind of capacitor to substitute for a battery applications, capacitors and batteries are different, capacitors are passive devices and batteries are power sources..........................
There's already an e-bike on the market in Europe utilizing a hybrid super-cap and LiPo battery. The super-cap is used for very efficient regenerate breaking capturing up to 90% of the energy, for which batteries are not well suited due to their slower charge rate.
When is the smartphone industry going to start using super-capacitors?.It would be nice to have a LG smartphone with a user"removable"super-capacitor system.
+4 gauge Most smartphones currently use supercapacitors to power the camera flash, however they are unsuitable for replacing the battery due to the comparatively low energy density.
+EV-Tech Explained Then it not a super-capacitor.If you convert"amp hours"to"farads"the rate of discharge is the same if you have enough farads in the caps.
+EV-Tech Explained One example of what I'm talking about...there is a company(not Maxwell)that actually builds"battery capacitors"these"battery capacitors"are being produced for the automotive industry,I've already seen these starting to be used in the trucking industry. They look like a regular"truck battery"they will start and run very large displacement diesel engines without any issues, run all the accessorys in the truck.(air conditioning, lights, air compressor etc.)With crazy amounts of reserve power.(In the event of a alternator failure, you can safely drive several miles before it goes dead)
If you have a material eletrodo with a low superficial area, you are gonna have a lower power density. However, one of the main things comparing to batteries what makes capacitor interesting is its power density, so I think it is not a good idea of decreasing it. I don't know if I could help you.
because a battery would be like 3.000.000 farads.... but a supercapacitor is up to 10.000 farads? 300 times less energy storage. And don't counting the charge recovery which the chemistry can do. Also 2.7v vs 12v, so you needs to place like 5 capacitors in serie, which the result is like the half of the half of the half of the half, 5 times half! Because the formula would be TOTAL CAPACITY = (c1 * c2) / (c1+c2) = cr1 ; (cr1 * c3) / (cr1+c3) = cr2 ....
@@flyguille The capacity will not be halved because you will now be able to apply a higher voltage. The best charging technique will be a fast switching circuit that charges each individual cells separately.
@@alokt7119 you are confusing energy storage with capacitance, read about asociative , and how to calculate the total capacitance when capacitors are in serie vs parallel. But in this case as supercaps are used as battery, the resulting serie capacitance doesn't matter.
hhow long do you think supercaps would be available worldwide specially AsIa it sucks because asian always left to be the last to benefit, and does it come in smaller size for mobile application? since you mention it is also applicable on car battery , question' does the alternator motor would be fast enough to charge it ? in that case ,the theory of perpetual charge and discharge of EV application is possible ,yes or no?
+Don Clavecilla Definatly available in Asia right now. It is often used for smartphone camera flash and can be done in very small sizes. An alternator can charge this as it does in the Mazda application, however this would not be perpetual energy as kinetic energy will be removed to generate electrical energy.
Thanks for the Explaination.. i do have a question.. mazda is doing this.. Why arent all car makers doing it.. Why are they allowing the vehicle to WASTE power? I mean a car is a MOVING generator basically. If they built the car to STORE energy while its moving it would not need alot of fuel.. Due to it CREATING the energy while its idoling.. which in large cities like la or Philadelphia happens more times than not
Ok we get it, capacitors and super capacitors are not currently used as batteries. The question is what is the physics behind the capacitor that will allow for greater energy storage so they can be used as a battery. I want the details of the physics involved not that they don't work. Show me what it takes to increase the energy storage of the capacitors.
This explanation isn't even able to separate supercapacitors from 'magic', eb "ion" is about the most generic, information free word, that exists, IONS OF WHAT? What is even a simple framework for the dynamics, rates of change, limitations, and resulting energy density characteristics? A person can't reason at all about supercapacitors based on the 'explanation' in this video.
I picked up 2 banks of maxwell power caps and plan on using them for a car audio system. running my power from alternator to front battery, front battery to three back batteries, the to the banks of caps, and finally to the amplifiers.
I'm running them now, they do help alot. the discharge and charge rate surpasses just about any bat. I'm basically using them as a buffer between the bats and amps. I'm looking at limitless lithium now. seems to be the next best thing in the audio electrical world.
Space Travel? Lol. Space is FAKE! Earth is FLAT and Motionless! Still beLIEve we went to the Moon? Only thing that went there was your imagination. Lol. Otherwise good video.
