Tattoo Artists create tattoos by using an electrical machine that punctures the skin with a solid needle to inject an insoluble ink into the dermis. The needle penetrates the skin between 50 to 3,000 times per minute, depositing a drop of ink into the skin with each puncture. The tattooing process essentially creates numerous tiny wounds through the epidermis into a deep layer called the dermis, this procedure leads the immune system into overdrive to initialize the healing process. The body sends a team of macrophages to the site of the injury to remove the foreign substance (ink particles). Some macrophages engulf ink particles while some other macrophages are unable to do so and remain in the dermis. This allows the injected ink to remain visible and last forever. However, with time they become less vibrant due to the renewal of the epidermis and the presence of macrophages.
