8:17/12:55 For those unsure about what shortcut to use for _template insertion:_ Mine is *CTRL + Insert* - Intuitive enough, and you're not gonna hit it by accident. - *Insert* requires moving the right hand, but doesn't strain the wrist as much. - It makes sense as a 'more conscious keystroke' for a 'bigger workflow step'. I also use the _Daily Notes_ plugin and have *CTRL + Home* to get back to 'today's home note', which is right next to it. With *CTRL + PgUp* and *CTRL + PgDn* to open previous daily notes. And *CTRL + Del* for file deletion. So that whole block is like a "meta notetaking config area" for me.

Happy New Year Bryan! Do you intend to create a course? I would gladly pay for it! It seems that your approach is closer to how I see Obsidian compared to other YT channels. Currently, I'm using TickTick for habit tracking, Notion for LifeOS, and Obsidian for note-taking. I think Obsidian might turn into my second brain, really. So let me know! You had to specify full path because Templater uses default node shell, which is /bin/sh and you seem to use zsh and most likely modify PATH in your zshrc. So Templates just has different PATH then your terminal shell.

so it auto updates in the document because of the way obsidian publish showed the titles, a lot of this stuff has been updated/changed now in the future

I wonder if this could be used to automatically scrape youtube transcriptions? I watch youtube lectures and take notes and have a highly manual process for getting transcriptions, it would be super handy to be able to paste a RU-vid url and get the transcript automatically

not sure how you would use the templates in obsidian to do that but looking outside of obsidian I'm sure that it would be relatively uncomplicated to write a script or tool to get transcriptions into plain text into your vault. maybe youtube-dl have a feature for that 🤷🏻‍♂️️

Templater looksvery useful. If you're someone who uses Obsidian across multiple platforms you may need a different version of your command line driven templates for each OS.

So with templater it should be possible to make a template that pastes the newest .md file of pdf notes produced by the Zotero md plugin, which should be faster than pasting them manually

to be fair, the intended workflow with mdnotes was to save the file directly into the vault and not copy/paste but I'm pretty particular about the way i do things so that's why there's that manual part of the workflow. But you could always just save the file directly to the vault and just rename it :)

5:00 is there any reason why you'd want a note's title to link to itself? Or was this just used as an example that linking is still possible in a template?

Thank you for this useful video! I see that we are able to make custom variables similar to the default ones such as {{date}}. I have a book template of mine, and there is a section in which I can insert the metadata such as the name of the author. What I would like to do is creating a custom variable like {{author}} in a way that when I enter the name of the author, a link such as [[{{author}}]] will be created. I am planning to use these custom variables in my book template in order to reach the page of the author easily with double brackets and to create links between them easily. I would really appreciate if you share any knowledge regarding this topic.

well with making custom variables like [[{{author}}]] it would need to know where to pull that data. at least with {{date}} it can access the internal date, but it would have no idea who or what an author is for a given note. some data is just going to be manual entry

I love the way you present information. This is not a dig in any way, but your/Obsidian's "templates" seem more like convenient lookups for aliases or parts of an overall template but not a "complete" template. Guess I was hoping for something more akin to Latex/Overleaf templates. Are there plugins more akin to those kinds of templates? Or perhaps you can save the formatting of the text along with the text in Obsidian "templates."

many of my templates at this stage were definitely more modular and piecemeal but now with the inline templater code and dataview im making more all in one templates that are a bit more complete

i mean you can with a negative query like "-path:Templates" but i just change their grouping color to the color of my graph's background so they just dont show on it visually

might need to check your hotkeys to see if the templater command is mapped to that hotkey correctly and if it is and still not working, deactivate the core template plugin

Hi Brian I signed up for your newsletter and I downloaded your CSS and templates, I copied the Templates folder into my Vault and I turned on the Template core plugin and the Templater plugin, but when I try to insert the meta template all I get is the If else logic instead of the actual template that you showed in the video. What do I need to do to fix this. Also have you made any video or articles related to setting up these templates and CSS that you share, I tried searching for a Readme document in that folder to see if there were any instructions to follow to import the CSS and templates into my vault. Also thank you so much for sharing them.

So that the displayed title on obsidian publish would automatically update to reflect the most recent name of the file but with recent updates to obsidian publish this is no longer necessary and so isn’t reflected in my latest templates.

I’ve mentioned it a lot, it’s for updating in obsidian publish sites when you change the note name but now it’s irrelevant after updates

You lost me at "I have this bound to a specific hotkey". So I thought, "Oh man, now I have to search for another video that will show me how to actually insert a template." But then I said "What if assigning hotkeys is in the menu and I didn't notice it before?" And so yay, I learned 2 things. Thanks!!

When I tried Cmnd-Shift-I (in Windows) it didn't bring up the template picker, instead a debug window (like Chrome devtools) pane opened on the right, which included html & other goodies. I guess that's what you get if that key-combo is not mapped. Fixed. Thanks!

The templater plugin messed up my obsidian badly, so badly my laptop uninstalled the program automatically and I had to restart the pc and re-install it... 😭

open source software means anyone can write it, but also anyone can look at the code and see what its doing or not doing. closed source you have no insight into whats going on, so its kind of a moot issue
