How 'The 5 Day Hard Brush Challenge' Completely Transformed My Art

Somehow I spent almost 3 months just to make this one video…
Anyways, in this video, I’ll be going over a little art challenge I devised for myself in order to see whether or not I could learn the painterly style that many professional artists such as nixeu, wlop, samdoesart, etc have. And whether or not I could incorporate them into my own artworks. I painted every day for 5 days in order to see if I could change my art in such a short amount of time. Along with my process, I’ll be sharing the important art lessons I’ve learned along the way.

As someone who mainly uses hard brushes I cannot comprehend how someone can use softer brushes. Maybe it's because I used to use cell shading way back when, but it's easier for me to paint with hard brushes. It's easier to make out shapes, carve out details and structures, only when I do blush or reflect light I use airbrush. It's nice to see someone deconstruct this style of painting, cause it's instinctual for me but for others it might be more complicated

yeah there's a lot of people that tend to hate the airbrush, and it's really hard to control. tho for anyone that wants to do soft shading, it's absolutely recommended to use lasso tool with the airbrush. This will lead to an artstyle, like say Laxy's style. Good luck to anyone wanting to do overpainting or painting method

Me too lol, for me it goes all the way back to MS paint. Always used pencil or paintbrush, never touched a single soft brush on there 😂

@@merisav4171 the edges would already be soft since it's an airbrush, unless the area selected wasnt big enough and caused the airbrush to immediately stop at the lasso tool's edge, in which case yeah ig u can smudge?

@neeevirus nah, just smudge, like with special brushes and getting settings right and understanding where it needs to be smudged and where it's not. and even better - there are exercises to learn how to do better gradient between colors using a hard edged brush.

I love when people show baby artists they’re not so masterful pieces when they’re learning. Nobody is perfect off the bat, and your first couple (several) pieces may look janky. Finish them, study them, learn what you want to improve, and try again. Godspeed fellow artists o7 never give up

This challenge is essentially what studying is, and it's super important that you use what you studied here in your own personal works. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people do this, just to go back to how they used to draw. I get that it is uncomfortable and hard to keep trying because they aren't seeing immediate improvement, but that's the point of progress! Keep going!

I use both equally. It is usually really good to use the airbrush first to block out general shapes and to ensure that the light and dark regions of the subject are concise and well defined. Then, I use the hard brush to paint in the negative space and to create defining details. Then, I focus on edge definition, by using a combination of the two brushes as well as the smudge brush to paint hard, soft and lost edges. I used to only use the hard brush, but using both really helps me keep my edges interesting and dynamic.

i think the idea of adding unrealistic/ "fake" detail might be more common in Japanese art. At least Saito Naoiki mentions it fairly often in his overpaint videos (called kimagure tensaku i think) in the context of guiding the viewer's eye by controlling the amount of detail in different areas.

You're quite literally the fine definition of hard working, learning, and inspiring. You've just made me wanna go and finish a lot of my unfinished drawings and study stuff in greyscale. This video made me feel chills from how calm the music was, how great the explaining was, and the inspiration from each and every drawing. You're an inspiring artist and you will be remembered 100% in the art community. I also like how you express your drawings and come out of your comfort zone and you aren't scared to redo your mistakes! When you redid the hair on day 3 it looked so much better and the improvement was crazy. You're putting into clear and technical words what I'm (attempting to) do in my painterly style. I've been trying to be more economic and purposeful with my brushstrokes, and that has helped a lot! For some reason, it gave me the fuzz feelings seeing others doing the low opacity on a hard brush thing. Ya! You gave me (all of us watching, really) tips to try and make our art better! I wonder if a less pain inducing method for the skin and face would be to use two colours of very close value, with one more red vs one more blueish hue, and gradient them over eachother using an airbrush, then colourpick all over the middle ground and use a hard brush to spread the colour around into the appropriate shapes, taking into account the right lighting direction and planes of the face. (Probably something I would do in the rendering phase)

I agree, using a soft brush or airbrush would definitely have made painting the face a lot easier, but would have defeated the point of the challenge :P

I've always only used hard brushes, i have a few empty versions of my favorites for blending. i wouldn't say I'm actually good at painting yet, but it's interesting to see someone better than me try a technique closer to my own

At least you allowed other shapes besides the round and even adjusting opacity. Most variants of this challenge don't allow that much.

I think your talking about the round brush only challenge? I've seen samdoesart and marco bucci do that one (haven't really seen anyone do the challenge in this video before) And imo that's a loott easier because they allow opacity sensitivity and use smudging, which kinda defeats the purpose (opacity sens doesn't build brush stroke confidence, and smudging means you can easily get any shape you want).

@@KraymerArt My mind was on distillation studies where your pallet is extremely small. I got so used to doing it with just a hard round and occasionally size sensitivity that I kinda mixed them up.

This video is so inspiring. I have trouble using brushes other than the Monoline brush and hard brushes. I thought that my art was bad bc I used hard brushes only with no line weight, and people advise not to do that. But this video made me actually feel like my art was good :D Ty

Back when I first started getting into coloring and shading, I always heard that celshading and hard brushes were the easier way to learn things like lighting and values. So ofc naturally I used that to learn how to add lighting and everything... and then I just ended up liking using hard brushes more than soft ones so I stuck with it. LOL It's really fascinating to see the picture from the other side's perspective, and it also reminded me that not everyone's brains work the same way and that there are so many techniques that we learn that just become second nature, it's actually crazy

Around a year ago I switched over to painting almost exclusively with a hard ink pen brush with very little opacity gradation and it’s been huge. Now I’ve branched out a bit into using the lasso tool and gradients as well, but overall hard edges are still a huge part of my process. The key is that painting is all about shapes. I find that THE thing that leveled up my painting skills was focusing on designing the shapes in my shading and paying attention to how colors interact without actively blending at all.

We forget that art doesnt always have to be perefect, if it somehow communicates the purpose, thats more than enough. The day 5 artwork has moments of despair, take the hand for example, never rendered or perfected anatomically, but we all know its purpose. We stare at the face and hair that the hand becomes background static

I am bad at using hard brush to make soft blended art. This opened my eyes to see that it is possible to use a hard brush to make soft blended art. Even when i used soft brush, my art would still look muddy.

This is a great challenge, I haven't only used hard brushes in a long time but I used to spend hours and hours painting on iscribble, which only had hard brushes. back in the day when iscrib existed lol. For the third painting, one trick you can use to keep your values tighter is to paint the entire thing in only black and white, and then apply a gradient map to it. Procreate has this feature, it automatically assigns a color to a value of b/w, so you can keep good control of your values, and save a little headache searching for the right color.

I just learnt of false detail by myself last January tho, I use streaks to give texture even tho my style at that time was kinda jelly artstyle. I remember I saw about it in 1 video of a master where they rendered the jewel with false details, so it looks like fully rendered but actually it's just a bunch of paint blobs. When I was able to remember it, I was like "yeah I'm (not) a pro (yet) and I'm so cool😎" it was fun!!

one thing I think is a big part of the reason why my lines are so confident is cause I HATE non-defined brushes, I don't know what it is about them but they make me so frustrated while drawing, like you're trying to read and the letters are blurry

no problem! Honestly, my layer organisation was pretty messy on all of the days, and didn't really differ much from how it is when I normally paint. Basically lineart/rough, base colours, and then clipping masks on top of those base colours. But here a tip; I think one useful thing to use if you want to achieve less lineart is to use a mask layer on your line art. This way you can erase some or most of it to get your desired result, while still being able to reverse stuff if you like. Hope this helps!

I thought hard brush would be something like, gpen or mono pen? Like as in what sinix design teaches us in his how to learn digital painting (beginners) video, or like an artist like ogipote who does hard edges with no blending (celshading style). Also you started with an application illustration, then proceeded to do studies. Nothing wrong with that, just wanted to point out that the reason why the rest of the days performed way better than the 1st was because of that fact Besides my petty nitpicks, the results were great

😂 glad you asked! Basically, there's a setting deep within your ipad settings that lets you set it so that if you triple click the power button, you toggle your entire screen to greyscale. I made a video on it (though the quality is traash because I made it a long time ago, but it'll get the job done)

Some tips for you... I notice in doing the studies you're drawing the big shaped by outlining them then filling them in - you're copying the shape but not the technique. You'd be better off trying to emulate the brush strokes as they did them in order to improve your stroke economy. Try the challenge of drawing an apple in 5 strokes or less. That is more important than the blending or lack thereof.

Tbh I found that to be what AI lacks. If you really look at it, most AI art are pretty smooth and are void of intricate textures or details. Idk, maybe it's just what I came across. AIs can handle different style in a lot of ways.

Yooo so like. I didn'treally take on the challenge, but watching this video this change the way I approach rendering. I just finished a piece where I mixed the use of hard brushes alongside my usual technique, and the result was a level of of depth and texture I was never able to achieve before! Obviously it is not perfect, it's the first time I ever tried something like this, but I went through all of my watch history just to find this video again just to find who to thank for this huge leap in my skills! I started with ms paint, then got medibang paint, now I have jump paint allong with it... So we have hard only > improved, then soft brush cause blending resulted in the buttery streaks (I didn't know you can blend with low opacity then lmao good ol no tablet days) Currently I know that hard edges and soft edges are a part of the same surface, back then I was like these 2 brushes either make a streaky mess or a blurry mess fuuuuck! The thing that saved me allot of nerves is the rake brush, if you can't blend why not let the brush do it for you? Holes are your friend, hatching, dots, dashes, cross hatching, close diagonals etc. I can make a gradient from black to desintegrating dots with everything in between and still make it look cool, but you need to experiment, many beginners stop at the soft brush since it hides their mistakes. I have seen allot of blurry artworks, Like it looks really cool, but I can't see any details.
