How The Banshee Became The Most LUDICROUS Quad Ever Built

There is a saying that " The happiness we seek is not in the absence of chaos; happiness is finding refuge in it. No other quad could drop you in the center of chaos and allow you to see what you were made of, like the Yamaha Banshee. A machine that could reach speeds of nearly 100 mph and deliver an experience like no other.
In this video, we will look back at the Yamaha Banshee and its impact on the off-road world and why Yamaha was forced to stop making this beast.

Banshees are something special, a lot of people don't realize that a Banshee won the Paris - Dakar rally in its class back in 1998. The rider, Vikus van Deventer, a farmer with an adrenaline mission finished more than a day ahead of the closest competitor!, yes you read that correctly, and the competitors had much bigger machinery! Respect.

I got my Banshee at 14 . We had it ported and polished , bored out and crank upgraded for more displacement, boost bottle, Fmf fatty pipes , and a 6 in extend swing arm. Mom wasn’t exactly happy when she asked Pop Is his quad as fast as yours now? He goes No…….his is actually a little faster . I can still hear mom yelling while walking back to the house I swear to God If he gets hurt! ….Rawr rawr rawr lol

This is both true 99.9% of the time and utterly incorrect. If it's fast and you crash it because it's unforgiving and you're not Travis Pastrana that is totally on you and always will be. If a bike is released where big bumps make the frame snap in half, that is dangerous in a fundamental way. Ridiculous example sure, just pointing out it's rarely black and white in either direction.

@@jameshealy4594 By definition, most (if not all) machines are “dangerous”. Chainsaws are in fact capable of inflicting harm, but I would NOT call a properly operated, well maintained chainsaw “dangerous” per say. Now if a company produces a saw where the chain is prone to flying off due to a design flaw, then I would call that particular type of chainsaw dangerous. The Banshee was a very capable machine, but not inherently flawed so long as the operator was equally capable. I guess all I’m saying is know your limits.

My friend got me into riding back in the late 80s. Learned to ride on my friends 1978 rm125. Not having a bike for 10+ years fast forward to June 2000. While shopping for groceries there was a Yamaha dealer on my way home. I stopped "just to take a look" I could not decide on either a banshee or YZ250, almost bought both. Pulled the trigger on banshee but still always wanted a YZ. Now in 2021 I found a 2000 Yz250 (yes 2 stroke) at a decent price and bought it. They both share garage space now.

When I was a kid my dad had a Banshee. He built it, got heads, reeds, pipes, and it had to run a special high octane race gas. He sawed off the front fenders so all that was left were nubs. By the time he was done building it, I was 12, and the only time he ever let me ride it, I wasn't allowed to go above 2nd gear, because that bike was stupid fast. When I was smaller, he'd ride with me sitting on the gas tank and he'd drag race people with super built raptors and stuff and win, with me riding along. That bike was crazy. I had a slightly built blaster and there was no comparison. I'd buy a banshee over any other quad as an adult if I had the money.

I've rode a ton of quads, had a KFX700, rode DS650's, Raptors, 250Rs, Predators, etc. Only one allowed me to powerslide easily through the first 4 gears without sweat, only one screamed that specific way, only one simply felt that certain way. The Banshee. My mom and dad used to both drag race them when I was little, and when I was able to ride a couple of Banshees, that's a feeling that sticks with you. The Quadzilla is somewhat close, and the Polaris 400 Sport tried, but the Banshee is well, the Banshee.

2 stroke 3 wheelers and the Banshee 4 wheeler are the only non motorcycle machines I would ever consider buying. In the early 2000's when I had a Yamaha dealership we'd get one of each color which meant two and we'd pull them in and out of the shop everyday for display and at the end of the week when the oil started to drip out of the exhaust we'd fight over who would get to take them outback and clean them out. Double the fun factor in the winter when we'd race them around the building in the snow covered parking lot. Had a helluva time selling 2 every year but at least we had fun with them while we had them.

The Banshee was THE bamf 4wheeler to have back in the late-90's and early 2000's at our local offroading spot - a long stretch of sandy creekbed on the edge of the county that spanned 3 bridges between two major highways - I still remember smelling the race gas when dudes would go by on their Banshees and, later, 400EX's. It was still fun and dangerous even if you had something like the Kawasaki Bayou 220's like myself and my friends all had - nearly ended myself a handful of times without the benefit of a Banshee - eventually built a V8-powered Jeep Scrambler to run the creek -- good times!

Started my motorcycle career in 1990 at a multi line metric dealership and I uncrated and assembled and did the pre delivery service on hundreds of banshees and blasters. They sold the shit out of them probably more than any other model dirt or street. On most machines performance parts give you little gains here and there but the Banshee was instant gratification. The Blaster would get some good gains from the same mods but nothing like the Banshee. If we wanted big gains on the blaster we would take the crank out and swap the blaster connecting rod out with one off the Banshee turning it into a stroker motor.

I think I just watch my favorite RU-vid video of all times! Growing up, riding a 80hp banshee, this literally gave me goosebumps. It makes me realize how useless my 90 hp raptor 700 is! just not the same feeling.

A banshee wasn't 80 hp

Took my 8 weeks and finally found a Banshees I had to buy. So thank you for getting me to finally buy another Banshee after 20 years and raising 2 girls I needed this video to give me a kick and remind me of my childhood love.

Awesome video!!!!! In 1997 I bought a brand new Warrior which I sold years ago. There was a brand new 1997 Banshee right next to it. I always wondered if I should have bought the Banshee, this video makes the answer obvious.

I bought my 14 year old son a warrior, that should answer your question, I think my blaster was as fast as the warriors, and I had a banshee but I had two many quads, I got a brute force 750 to replace them, I will die with my Kawasaki, still love it to this day 2005

Your explanation of the cons is exactly why i bought the warrior! Slightly slower than the shee but i live in the rockies at high elevation. My warrior always out preformed my skill!

I worked at a dealership in the late 90s when the Banshees were in their prime. At closing time when we brought all the ATVs back into the shop for the night it was a race to see who'd get to pilot the banshee.
