People who are blind, obviously can't see. But new research shows that while they can't see, their brains can! Anthony explains what this means and how this ability actually plays an important role in a blind person's everyday life.

"As totally blind people cannot perceive the light--dark cycle (the major synchroniser of the circadian pacemaker) their circadian rhythms often "free run" on a cycle slightly longer than 24 h."

"When people are completely isolated from environmental time cues, their circadian rhythms free run with a nearly 24-h cycle, generated by an internal body clock. Free-running temperature, cortisol, and melatonin rhythms have also been described in totally blind people, even though they were living in normal society and had access to abundant time cues; thus an intact visual system may be essential for synchronization of the circadian system."

I remember hearing about a guy who spent a month in a cave with no direct sunlight and his circadian rhythm was almost matching the day and night cycle. Also, some sleep studies show that some people are day/night/shift people naturally, so the circadian rhythm studies should differ person to person whether blind or otherwise. About receiving the light impulse, since we did evolve from simpler organisms we should see other cells take that job(especially if born blind) and more and more blind are using sonar like Ben Underwood to see too.

I am a member of a band where I play the drums. We came out with this workout idea where we would turn off every light during our bandpractice so we are able to play without watching our instruments all the time. While playing through out set i noticed some differences to playing with the light on. Firstly, it got colder in the room, or at least thats what i felt. Also playing was less exhausting. After no time i knew where every drum and cymbal was, just from memory, even though i didn't see it

I was born completely blind in my left eye. I can actually confirm this. When I cover my right eye I can still sense light... but not really see it. It's hard to explain but I just know it's there.

Its hard to say... I feel like i'm motivated more easily in the dark, or maybe just find it more relaxing to work so I can get to work better, but in the light I think that I can be more productive if I have my mind set to it.

I would like to see you guys do a video on blind sight. This phenomenon has been studied for a while now. It's where, the part of the brain that deals with sight is damaged, but not the eyes, so people with this disorder can't see, but they can catch balls, deflect objects, etc.

Light, definitely light. If I'm struggling to read what's in front of me, or am being bombarded with light from a computer screen with no ambient light around me, then I get very disoriented and often lose track of what's going on.

There are other cues the body uses to get this information. For example, the birds singing, the warm sun on the face, the volume of traffic, an alarm clock, the type of clothes you're wearing, there are so many things, you'd be amazed. Try the eye mask experiment to experience these things for yourself (I've explained this in a reply to someone else below). I have a blind family member, had a blind Church friend & have worked with blind people. They never cease to amaze me. Also, you could...

Some people who are blind (depends on what part of the brain was damaged) can 'see' kind of. the signal from sight goes to the part of the brain linked with emotion (like everyone else) but not to the part that 'decodes' what they are seeing making them able to 'see' the mood but not the picture

you might feel that you concentrate better in the dark because the think that you are concentrating on is lit up. if you cant see things in the dark, it makes sense that you have lesser distractions and hence you can focus on the task at hand better.

Light is 40 octaves of sound at 90 degrees just like electromagnetism. We use that technology for many purposes including consciousness when combined with the Fibonacci sequence.

I always fall asleep under a dim florescent light, which is the favorite of classrooms. I would love for a study to be done seeing which lighting situations render the most alertness. I seem to be most awake under natural sunlight.

I would have loved to see the experiment run with them bind folded. To see if the activation of skin to sunlight also worked, I understand some chemical processes like vitamin D would only work with sunlight, and maybe we can actually pick up on that to be aware of light... :)

Well, if you are in a dark room, and you are doing something using another sense, such as sound or feel, the lack of vision can help you remain focused upon what you are doing, especially if one is ADHD.
@camiart_casual

The thing is, our computer screens give off a lot of light. That's what keeps us awake, the light screws up our internal clocks and we don't get as sleepy as we would if we just let the natural lighting of night take over and tell our bodies "hey! the day's over!" There are actually apps that will change the quality of light your screen gives off so that that doesn't happen.

Maybe your better use of working in a dark room has something to do with your DSPD. I am likely someone with DSPD and I like darker rooms for working, However, it's said that fluorescent lighting can lower our concentration so maybe it has to do with the type of light in the room!

Anthony saying he works better in a dark room - I'll bet he's talking about working on a computer in which case the source of light would be his monitor. The lack of other light would stop him from being distracted but the light from his monitor would keep him focused.

I thought similarly. If you actually can't see, then how are you getting work done enough to say you work better? I think this sudy is more about "enough light to see vs not enough light to see" more than it's about "the more light the better"

i pay more attention in the dark. in school, when the teachers dimmed the classroom lights or used projectors, i focused on my school work more. i always went to school thinking "these lights are too damn bright" and it actually made it worse for me to work under pressure - i.e. MATH. lol. im a little anxious, so you can imagine being called up to answer a question in a class of students with bright lights beaming on your face. also i didn't get enough sleep sometimes so that's probably why.

You may work better in a 'dark room', but really you're probably working in front of a computer or at least with a desk-light, so I'd imagine there's more than enough light to stimulate your attention.

I suspect that when you say you work better in a dark room that the area in which you are working is lighted but the rest of the room is dark. This should reduce your focus to the area that you can see better.

I pay attention better in low-level lighting and natural lighting. In classrooms at school, I absolutely hate it when the teacher turns on the lights. I'd much prefer to conduct class just by the light coming in through the windows.
@xalener

Maybe people pay attention better in the dark because the source of light is usually focusing on (or actually is) the thing they're actively working on? When you're in a bright room, everything at once is the focus.

I work better when it's dark outside, but I have a light on so it's centered around me and dim everywhere else. Maybe it's about that contrast, which might further activate the brain. Or some people already have a certain level of activity so, when it's bright, It's too much.

Almost 12 years since I was a kid I was curious if the blind ever sees light. "I was blind, and now I see."
@prektvi
@prektvi 10 лет назад
There is a huge range of what blind and visually impaired people can and can't see. The grand majority of persons we perceive to be totally blind some light perception. Note that light perception does not mean the ability to see color, shape, detail or anything of the sort. It means that they can perceive extremely bright lights and are often extremely sensitive to light. This is why many totally blind people wear sunglasses. The only individuals I have worked with who have zero light perception have had their eyes completely removed. It is extremely rare to meet a totally blind person who still has physical eyes and absolutely no light perception.

You have trained yourself to realize when the sun is at a certain brightness it is that time of the day. Therefore your brain realizes it's time to get up! Personally I wake up when the room is bright enough. Found this out because in winter I woke up at 8am, now it's bloody 5:30am, every morning! Have to remember to shut the curtains before sleeping now, stupid internal alarm.
