How the Boston Celtics Used Robert Williams to Unlock Their Offense

The Boston Celtics used Robert Williams to employ an unorthodox offensive scheme that goes against traditional NBA thinking in regards to spacing. This scheme allowed the Celtics to establish themselves as the best offense in the entire NBA post-All Star break, and Robert Williams was a key player in their success.
Rob Williams continues to improve defensively, but his offense really doesn't get the attention that it deserves. He allows Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to work off-ball more effectively, and he alleviates the need for the Celtics to have a true "point guard".
Despite the suspension of Ime Udoka, the Celtics have the blueprint for offensive success.

Sad he doesnt get passed to a lot. He could average 20 ppg but he is the 4th option. Glad he's in Portland so he can prosper into an all NBA player

I feel like if the celtics went after hartenstein he could have operated in this offense well for them, as well as providing solid interior defense while williams is recovering from surgery

Great video man, that warriors comparison at the end was spot on. Do you think the Celtics didn't try this more in the finals because the warriors were effective at neutralising this approach?
@AlexHoops
@AlexHoops 2 года назад
It’s a combination of that and the fact that Boston seemed to deviate from this approach more in the Finals. Don’t really know why, it might’ve been due to Rob’s injury but they certainly didn’t use him offensively as much as they have in the past.

Movement and quick and fast passing taking advantage of nobody defending in the paint is the way to go having big men shoot threes is stupid you're showing exactly what needs to be done teams like Milwaukee should be doing what Williams is doing with their big guy

why doesn't robs man just drop back if they know rob can't shoot ?
@33xvw
@33xvw 2 года назад
This is what I was thinking too, but maybe the Celtics counter this with giving Rob some screener action before they get into their spread look. I think that would create a quick 2 on 1 at the top for whichever ball handler they choose.

Hey Alex, how is this a 4 out variation and not a 5 open motion?
@AlexHoops
@AlexHoops 2 года назад
A 5-out motion offense requires spacing, and like I mentioned, Rob isn’t a floor spacer. There also are not predetermined actions in a 5-out motion offense. The Celtics operate with set plays. Rob will facilitate not only from up top, but also out of the high post, which is more in line with a 4-out 1-in offense. Even if he’s pulled up to the perimeter, you can imagine that the Celtics are treating it like like an extension of the high post.
@mcfuckinanotheraccount808
@mcfuckinanotheraccount808 2 года назад
@@AlexHoops Great explanation. Don't they also operate very much on offensive concepts (through predetermined actions). For example, a lot of times it seems that it's a 3 man game on top between two combo guards and the center as a screener and facilitator, and they can run multiple variations off that scheme. (Pelicans do it too). Also it seems different actions chosen by the big man (handoff in diff spots, or pass to diff spots, screening, etc) trigger a variety of different simple (fundamental basketball) actions by other players. Which i would say resembles some of what the Warriors do (no wonder both coaches worked with Pop), which is a motion offense (or fake motion most of the time, with initial set plays as the base of their offense?). I'm not sure about all i'm saying, i'm just trying to learn and absorb as much as i can, i'm 24 and it's my second year as a coach
