I still remember when the broadway subway was going to start construction "any year now" back in like 2006. Then we got the Canada Line, and the Evergreen Line, and Rapid Bus, and 15 years later we're finally starting it. This project really has been a long time coming and it was needed probably 20 years ago.

this city is run by a bunch of idiots. a good example is putting two stations near Coquitlam Center. half my life has passed and I'm already at a point where I am ready to move out of the city.

@@RMTransit I too am very excited. If it was built 20 years ago though, then traffic would be so much easeir, and the discussion would be on either extending the Skytrain to UBC, or even better yet, extending the skytrain to Paterson to create a circular millenium line the covers the entire city.

I mean Vancouver City wanted it for ages but the outlying municipalities understandably objected given the relatively slow pace of skytrain expansion back then and a need to serve other cities then just Vancouver. Since then the pace of expansion has picked up and a number of other cities have had their 'turn' at seeing skytrain reach them.

I live at Granville and Broadway. Can’t wait for this line to open, I have to use my truck more than I like but this should help quite a bit! I’m also happy to put up with the construction if it means more choice in our area. You should talk about the boardway plan for housing too

Thank you for the amazing content as always! I live in Coquitlam at the very far end of the millenium line, and I hate going into Richmond or anywhere in South Vancouver with a passion. Driving to Richmond takes 40 minutes at the very least (thru the New West hell hole), and transiting is at least 1.5 hours including three very inconvenient transfers at Commercial Broadway and Waterfront (plus additional wasted time going into the downtown core). The M Line / C Line transfer at Broadway City Hall will cut at least 20-30 minute off that commute route. This is by far the most anticipated transit project for me in all of Vancouver and I can't wait for it to open! Keep up the great work Reece!

It's gonna be great. My dad lives off Commercial Drive but he's getting "rehoused" by his co-op corp and he'll probably be forced east, out of the city of Vancouver. This will soften the blow. Broadway should have had this 20 years ago. I remember the Millennium line extending west to VCC-Clark and being underwhelmed. Great for VCC students but that's otherwise a dead zone. I think in all the years I lived in Vancouver I got on at that station once.

one sec, you should not take that way to get to Richmond or south Van. The best way for you is to get to Lougheed. Get on the Expo Line heading west. Get off on 22nd Street Stn and catch the 100 bus. That bus runs along Marine Way into Marine Drive into Vancouver. You can get off on any of the major north-south streets (Knight, Fraser or Main) to take bus up the hill. If you need to go to Richmond, get off on Marine Stn and you can get in via Canada Line.

There are 6 transit developments in Vancouver I want to see over the next decade (2031): the Broadway extension, the broadway extension to UBC, the Surrey Langley extension, the Burnaby Mtn gondola, the downtown/false creek streetcar, and finally, the PoCo extension. If Port Moody has Skytrain, Poco deserve it too.

@@uncouver The evergreen extension was designed to have a branch extending from Coquitlam central towards POCO downtown. So it's just a matter of time. But yah False Creek Street Car should be a priority imo once the viaduct is removed.

My wife and I went to Vancouver for our honeymoon in early 2006, and I remember how crowded it was taking the 98 B-Line from our hotel downtown down to Broadway and transferring to the 99 B-Line to go out to UBC and visit the botanical gardens. (We were planning to visit the Museum of Anthropology, but their CityPass machine wasn't working. And we did get yelled at by a guy checking tickets at a SkyTrain station at one point, because I'd bought student tickets, since we were still in college, but our student IDs from Webster University in St. Louis didn't cut the mustard with him.) At any rate, I hope one day we'll be back in Vancouver and I can take the Millennium Line out to UBC and actually visit the Museum of Anthropology!

I'm a part owner of a building near Arbutus and developers have approached and made offers even though it's not on the market. If developers have their eyes on that area it means there's going to be big changes!

The Millennium Line will be a huge boost to the network, especially to the Canada Line when it is extended to UBC. Half of the busiest bus routes in the region go to UBC and a lot of that traffic will funnel onto the Millenium Line via the Canada Line once it is fully extended. Also congrats on your sponsorship!

REECE GOT A SPONSOR! Congrats! I'm extremely excited about this extension. Right now I live on the North Shore, work near Renfrew station on the M-line, and frequently have to travel out to UBC. The 99 is great but the new line will make things a lot easier. The transfer from the Canada line to the 99 westbound really sucks, having to cross the street twice. A dedicated bus loop at Arbutus will be great. And a huge improvement will be had with the new 5-car trains (not sure if this is officially confirmed by translink but I was talking to an engnineer who's working on minor system upgrades/platform extensions/etc to handle the new trains) on the M-line and the system as a whole. Your comments about the R4 are basically already happening - I don't use the R4 myself but it is HEAVILY used by students, frequently looking as full as the 99 usually is, and has really opened up the 41st area for more students to live. The only sad thing is that the 99's record as busiest bus in the US and Canada will be no more!

very exciting it sounds like the R4 is replacing the 43 Express to UBC. I moved to 41st ave so I could take that bus to school because it was so much less busy then the 99. Loved the video!

The bus gets stuck in traffic way too much it seems. The promised priority transit traffic doesn’t seem to exist. Plus no designated bus ways.

Visited YVR in March and it was exciting to see all the progress all along Broadway. The 99 is as busy as ever so it's clear the demand is there. I stayed in Mt Pleasant (my personal favorite neighborhood) and having to walk several blocks to/from the Cambie St station was definitely not the greatest after a full day of walking around downtown, Stanley Park, Kits Beach, etc. However the bus network is still top notch in my opinion and will only improve with more available east-west mobility options.

I was just in Vancouver for the first time, and as a resident of Ontario, and only recently in life exploring more of Canada, taking transit in Vancouver was a very easy and pleasant experience. I have to say the R4 rapidbus was an amazing ride. I completely see why you are so passionate about transit there

Great summary of the new line, I'm excited about it, and it is a long time coming. I'm very glad they chose tunneling, as the "cut and cover" on the Canada line was tough on those neighborhoods, but Cambie street sure did bounce back once it was completed! I do hope the line continues to UBC as the stretch of Broadway between Arbutus and Alma is kind of dying. Many of the great businesses picked up and moved to main street, and there were always a lot of vacant store fronts in the last few blocks to Alma.

Parts of broadway street will cave in when doing the underground tunnel because back in the early 50s it was still gravel. All the high-rise buildings built along broadway won't be strong enough to withstand drilling n filling holes in the area.

Reese, your programs are great, as is this one. Broadway, once the new subway is built, is going to boom and bloom as never before, and South Granville will be our equivalent of, say, Bloor and Avenue Road in midtown Toronto. If nothing else, we can say that Vancouver is a city that is doing transit right. (With a few minor glitches, as you pointed out). But it has a transit system to be proud of, and be an example to other North American cities as well.

Re: double crossover on skytrain. They do exist on the Canada line. One just north of 41st Ave, one just north of Broadway and one just before waterfront. I wonder though if the reason there are no double crossovers on expo and millennium lines is a limitation of the linear induction technology. I would imagine the magnetic plates cannot cross each other as the polarity of the magnets would be at 90 degrees causing all sorts of control problems for the train, so there would likely need to be a gap and that could cause the train to fail. Notice too that at flat junctions the rails don't cross over each other either. At lougheed and Coquitlam they are both ladder crossovers. Which I think is for the same reason, the induction plats cannot cross each other. What do you think?

I don't recall how I came across your content, but I sure am glad that I did. I've become so interested in the details of different transit systems due to your content. I am just looking forward to when the new line is done here so people can find something new to complain about in Vancouver :-) I used to travel quite a bit for work (~50 flights/year) and was often disappointed with the transit options in many cities. That said, Paris, London, Budapest (just for some really cool stations) and Berlin had fantastic options.

I enjoy watching this video and your clear and thorough explanation of the benefits of this project. As someone who commutes daily from Yaletown to New Westminster, I am exciting to see this completed soon. At the same time, while I think that Metro Vancouver's transit network is good and getting better, I wish that they'd already start getting the next project underway before this one finishes. I think transit construction has to be an ongoing thing, otherwise we are always playing catch up.

If you recall, Canada line, for all its flaws, was built within 4 years to meet the olympics deadline. I still think it was a great achievement, we now have an airport line that wouldn't have happened it wasn't for 2010. Evergreen extension was also done in quick succession once the politicians got out of the way which is always the issue (see surrey LRT/Skytrain). Translink is really good at digging/boring.

I feel like one of the next lines that needs to be put in after Broadway and Fraser-Langley (aside from one to North Van, which I think probably will be next) is one that goes from 22nd Street station in New West, along Marine Way to Marine-Gateway station. Would really help connect South Van, Richmond and the airport to the New West and Surrey/Langley areas, without having to go all the way to Commercial-Broadway to get to the Canada Line to come all the way back south. It's faster to take a bus right now and that's like at least half an hour, when it would be like ten minutes on Skytrain. The more you can just stay on the train the whole way, the more I think people are encouraged to take transit.

I do wonder where the Arbutus station will be built. All four corners of that intersection seem occupied (office, fuel station, restaurant, and paint store respectively). The bus loop around it will take up considerable land as well.

Back in 2007-2013, when I went to SFU and afterwards with my first professional job on the millenium line, I lived near knight street: so, I was quite often the only person on the train from commercial to VCC Clark. Good times and hijinks and extra napping ensued.

The Broadway Subway/Arbutus Extension isn’t the only project TransLink is planning. There’s also the planned Langley extension from King George Station, the Burnaby Mountain Gondola and Capstan Station

i grew up in langley and just moved to maple ridge and the process of getting to places via skytrain is a hassle due to the number of buses to take, like the 555 having to go down hwy 1 during peak hours and cross a bridge just to get to lougheed is crazy, so hopefully the langley expansion and the new broadway line will help with the frustrations

Athens' metro line 4 will be almost twice as long for almost half the cost of the broadway subway, with multiple entrances. I understand that labour costs are higher in Vancouver, but still yikes!

Broadway commercial real estate is probably some of the most expensive in the city because of just how productive the corridor is. You'd expect the Broadway subway to be the most expensive per kilometre route in Vancouver (aside from one that needs to go underwater). You can also see that this project is both cheaper and will be done sooner than a lot of Toronto's upcoming projects.

Interesting and informative, thanks. Please note that “fewer” is used for countable nouns (example “fewer transfers”) and “less” is used for collective nouns (example “less water”). Using proper grammar keeps the viewer focussed on content instead of noticing incorrect usage.

As someone from Toronto that will be moving to Vancouver in the near future, I think the Maple Leafs will win the Stanley Cup before the Eglinton line is done... lol It's good to see Vancouver is getting another subway line, but the region (province?) really needs to increase and expand the West Coast Express (I think that's the name of the GO equivalent?) to make it a realistic option for people take in/out of the city who aren't commuters on say a weekend. The schedule is pretty bad. GO for example has extra trains running when there's a major event (like a concert) or even a major sporting event like a TFC match so people don't have to all drive in and increase the congestion. Even the CNE (pre-covid of course), used to offer a transit and CNE combo ticket. The entire south shore (south of the Fraser) is extremely under served but that's a whole other discussion...

The reason the Commercial/Broadway connection is terrible is because it's essentially two stations built on top of one another. Commercial was built in the '80s whereas Broadway was built around 2000. That station was never imagined to be an interchange in the original skytrain plans way back in the '80s so of course the designers needed to creative, and creative they got!

Been loving all the topics you present in your videos & it's fantastic to find people who are also passionate about fixing transit. Was wondering if you'd ever considered more frequent visual demonstrations of maps/lines/terms when you're diving into the specifics of these systems? Do you also think Vancouver is better off not extending rapid transit to areas like West Side and Dunbar?

Yeah, obvious, but very important is the transfer station between Millennium Line and Canada Line at B-CH.

The number of people that need to transit between North Burnaby and Richmond is overstated in this video. Nice to have but not really a major factor. By far the main reason the line is being built is to improve transit (and density) along the Broadway corridor. It's a travesty that the new line isn't going at least as far as Alma. Now we just need council to grow some balls and actually allow density. There were protests and lots of controversy about the mid-sized 21 storey building at Main @ Broadway (one of the most obvious places to build density) and have been protests for over 10 years blocking similar sized builds at Broadway/Commercial skytrain (i.e. the largest transit hub in western Canada). Meanwhile in Burnaby there are 2 towers under construction in Burnaby that are over 60 storeys, taller than anything in Vancouver. Every station should have a cluster of 50+ storey towers with smaller ~20- storey towers a couple of blocks out and then ~6 storey ones radiating out from there up to King Ed.

While I am excited for the Broadway Subway just on principle (Even if I don't really go into that area), what I'm curious is as to whether they'll ever expand the Millennium Line into Port Coquitlam. Coquitlam Central station has track switches and a stub ready for whenever they want to do it.

The Second Avenue Subway is a good example of a bore/Cut-N-Cover hybird. All the stations are Cut-N-Cover, the tunnels are deep bored. I think the sole exception is Lexington 63rd who was built with Cut-N-Cover tunnels in the 1970.

While Cambie will still only have one entrance, I expect there will be less people coming and going now that it won't be a 99 B-Line transfer. It's always been a major choke point in the mornings for westbound travellers trying to board, as the 99 buses are usually already packed to capacity with UBC students. This was certainly true when I lived in the neighborhood 2000-2011. Trying to board at Cambie (or anywhere west of Clark) usually meant watching several full buses pass by or only load a few new passengers. With all transfers to the 99 at Arbutus, hopefully one will see more equitable boarding and throughput. And on that note, stopping the Broadway subway at Arbutus is kind of a brilliant move. The "creme de la creme" westside elite that has NIMBYed mass transit from gaining a foothold there (notably the Arbutus rail corridor going unused) will now host one of the busiest intermodal transfer points in the region. They will get to see the best and worst of what mass transit does to a neighborhood...but mostly the best. It will likely be a huge positive for local business and development, and acclimatize locals to seeing transit as good. Hopefully it also puts Translink in a better position to wrangle contributions from UBC for completion. Between these factors and the inevitable development of 41st avenue as a mass transit route, who knows, maybe it will even change opinions if the question of using the Arbutus rail corridor is considered again in the distant future.

There is supposedly a new project that will probably go through if the right person is elected, which plans to make a train line from UBC to Metrotown with a stop at Oakridge. The first leg seems to be intended as an R4 replacement, and the second a 49 replacement.

I think if they had tried to push for the lie to go all the way to ubc in one phase, it would’ve taken a lot longer. There’s a reason why there’s almost no development on the West side outside of the Cambie Corridor, there’s a lot of NIMBYs that would not be happy to see Skytrain. But once the line to Arbutus is complete, the demand to extend it all the way will increase rapidly.

Reece, when the Millennium line extends west of VCC-Clark, I think Translink will have 4-car Mark 2 and Mark 3 trains on that line!!

TransLink has ordered a fleet of platform length 5 car trains to replace the mark 1 and to add capacity. They'll like go to the expo line and the 4 car mark 3s cascaded to millennium line.

I'm a year late to this video but the R4 is absolutely packed with UBC students. I'm not sure how much of the crowd is caused by people avoiding the construction on Broadway and therefore would be alleviated once the train is done, but we really need to start seriously talking about the 41st/49th Skytrain that was outlined by Kennedy Stewart's council.

This is my opinion as well. Hopefully before UBC extension of Millenium, we see a train line along 41st or 49th. Especially with 41st, which that great connection with Joyce Collingwood as well as Oakridge, and other 41st St new developments.

I believe there was a plan for an underground entrance for the broadway city hall station across the street, underneath the Crossroads clinic and whole foods probably beside the underground parking lot. But it never came to fruition.

I feel like the TTC should consider installing the movator at Spadina again. The technology is probably more reliable now and they’re pretty common at Pearson and the tunnel to the island airport. Maybe they’ll do it when the station gets renovated.

Honestly, I don’t even live there, but I can understand the reason for the sight lines and height restrictions. Vancouver is consistently rated as one of the most beautiful cities in NA for a reason, and it’s partially because of the cityscape. The city could easily use other policies to combat the increased housing prices these restrictions cause, but that’s a failure on their part.

I left the north shore of Vancouver for Melbourne in part because infrastructure investment was absolutely pathetic and inter-city movement was so bad. The fact that it took this long just to get a short line to Arbutus is depressing. Meanwhile Melbourne spends $100 billion on a single suburban loop line when it arguably isn't even needed yet.

I like the circumferential polycentric jargon. That aside, one reason it won't go through deep W10th is the NIMBYs who want neither a tunnel or the land use changes that (usually/should) come with high-ish capacity public transportation. Yet, the development at the old Jericho CFB base could make a train necessary? Ideally after Arbutus, a McDonald, Alma, Jericho (for beach access too), Sasamat then UBC. Watch the land uses change!! (Or, should we not mention that?)

Yeah it's really unfortunate though the project at the foot of the Burrard bridge is incredibly exciting if a little far from the line. Not sure if you saw the recent discussion around a streetcar plan but that's probably going to get a video and I think it's a pretty interesting discussion for serving areas directly adjacent to the water.

lol so the term for the retiring of 2G is a refarm not a shutdown ;) the frequencies get refarmed to newer technology standards and uses which causes it not to work. Don't know why this older video passed my list but I do miss traveling to Vancouver from Bellingham
