📢 Chicago Teachers Union 2025-2028 Contract Negotiations: What's on the Table? 🏫
🔍 As negotiations commence, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) presents extensive demands potentially costing billions. With Mayor Brandon Johnson, a former union activist, representing the city, the stakes are high.
📊 Cost Breakdown:
Minimum Salary Increases: 9% yearly cost-of-living adjustments estimated at $2.52 billion.
Step Increases for Experience: $817 million.
Enhanced Stipends: 15% salary bump for National Board Certified Teachers, potentially $2 billion.
Additional Personnel: Hiring 4,650 staff including teachers assistants and specialists, costing $1.7 billion.
Student Benefits: Free CTA passes and reduced class sizes could cost over $643 million.
///
🏢 Beyond Traditional Bargaining:
Housing Initiatives: Demands include 10,000 new affordable housing units and extensive rental assistance, totaling up to $4.7 billion.
Health and Wellness: Full funding for infertility and abortion care, weight-loss treatments including Ozempic, and other extensive health services.
///
🚌 Infrastructure and Environment:
Electric School Buses: Transition to an electric fleet could reach $500 million.
Green Initiatives: Proposals for carbon neutrality by 2035 with solar installations and green tech education programs.
///
📈 The implications of these demands could significantly affect Chicago's educational budget and taxpayer expenses, amidst ongoing debates over the effectiveness of such spending against declining student outcomes.
💬 Chicagoans are closely watching how these negotiations will impact the city's educational future and financial health.

The increase in $$ should be tied to student performance. Taxpayers would feel better if the kids were actually graduating or even reading at grade level.

Even the original American socialist, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, declared that there could never be public sector unions, calling it "unthinkable and intolerable" AFL-CIO President George Meany explained, "It is impossible to bargain collectively with the government." When a private company gives in too much to the union, the consequence is going out of business or bankruptcy ( at least until Barack Obama meddled with General Motors) Then the union contract is null and void; a livable contract is created out of the new situation. Customers will go elsewhere until the prices are brought in line. The issue with public sector unions is, the public is stuck paying for the union demands. While in the case of teachers' unions, families are opting to send their children to be privately educated - if they can afford it - to avoid anti - American indoctrination and exposure to inappropriate focus on libido and gender identification, but the obligation to underwrite the undesirable government schools is still upon them, in the form of their property tax bill. This is why vouchers would be a godsend to our educational system - for the kids. And their parents.

Have any items you discussed been put forth as part of the negotiation?

Yes, all of these items are in the CTU's proposed contract, which they are negotiating now. You can read their proposed changes for yourself here: files.illinoispolicy.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/FILE_0918.pdf
