I'm from Singapore, our country is a total joke when it comes to wild life conservations. Our government keeps talking about conversations but constantly destroys whatever small patches of forest that we have left.. please talk about my country...

Forests in Ontario are cut worse than in Russia, train loads of wood is sent to US. Here in Toronto, a 3/4” plywood has gone from 35$ to 100$ in two years. I’m disgusted by the Canadian corruption.

Good info. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. About 30 years ago, I became involved in Greenpeace's "Save the Whales Campaign" and then their "Cleanup the Great Lakes". Those issues were slightly resolved. People from outside Canada think that Canada is too big to environmentally impacted by our activity, however in British Columbia, 3/4s of Woodland Caribou have vanished, there are mountains of sulphr in Alberta from the oilsads and then there's the old Giant Gold Mine in Yellowknife with enough dioxin stored underground (from the gold extraction process) to possibly kill all life on Earth. Canadian taxpayers are paying about $4.4 BILLION to cleanup this poison, after the company was purchased by Miramar for $10. They will not inherit the costs of the stored toxin. I hope international pressure will force our Canadian governments to be more honest and force polluters to clean up their mess.

Great Northern Plains of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh are also regions that suffered due to high population density and continuous habitation for 5000 years. The region was analogous to modern East Africa, with 3 species of bigcats, cheetahs, 3 species of rhinos, 3-4 large bovid species, elephants, deers, antelopes, wolves and hyena on land, and 3 species of crocodillians, river dolphins, otters in water.

Here in Sri Lanka, there are two separate departments for forest conservation and wildlife conservation. So they both have lands that native wildlife thrives. "Yala national park" situated in southern Sri Lanka, is controlled and maintained by the wildlife department and there are many bordering conserved forests that belong to the Forest department. Ironically, the electric fences (usually used to keep elephants away from people) are made through the border of the national park dividing the forest in to two separate parts due to lack of proper communication between these departments. So some elephants died due to lack of food and water because of this stupid action. And this is just one case. There are many more intense problems here. According to a research done few years ago, elephants live in 60% of the total land area of Sri Lanka. But forest cover is now under 26% and in 44% of the land, both elephants and humans, live together with a crucial conflict.

To the Chinese that area has always been claimed by Manchus, a minority ethnicity of China. And that area is the Manchurian homeland, where they originated. In Chinese we call it 外興安嶺，or Outer Xing-An Mountain. Inside China today, there is a 大興安嶺，or Greater Xing-An Mountain. They are part of the northeastern Manchurian ancestral homeland. The Manchus migrated south after conquering heartland China, left there a small population to guard the land. The Russian empire tried to settle there but was defeated by the Manchurian army who decided to drive them out in the 17th century.

"Are any border or political issues in my area", previously not really, but having moved interstate to South Australia, the Murray/Darling River topic is now locally relevant to me. Not international, but given the level of state autonomy within Australia, there's a lot of tension and blame-games over the mismanagement of the continent's largest river system. It's a burning dumpster fire of a topic with so many levels of issues, but at its core, its rather like the Aral Sea disaster: arid region with a mighty river that's now depleted in order to sustain agriculture in a region that otherwise is incapable of it at that level. The big enemy is cotton (Aral Sea disaster 2.0?), as one might expect. But with 4 states all using the system, no state wants to take the blame or will use the exploits of a neighbour to justify their own. In South Australia, being the most downstream user, mismanagement upstream directly impacts SA. SA also uses the water for irrigation (albeit on a lesser scale but still growing stuff in the desert) as well as a source of drinking water for Adelaide in rough times. The situation lately has lead to the longest river, the Darling/Barka, completely drying up with massive fish kills and towns left on boil water alerts (and at its worst, literally surviving on water being trucked hundreds of kilometres just to keep towns alive). Meanwhile near the Murray's mouth, the Coorong ecosystems have been collapsing, the Murray River's own mouth has been silting over and the Lake Alexandrina system has had issues with seawater incursion as the river failed to output enough freshwater. It's a huge mess. At least a year of above average rain has got the Darling/Barka flowing again and giving a false sense that 'its all good now'.

The situation in the Middle East is dire, especially with the dams constructed on the sources of Tigris and Euphrates, the whole region is going down rapidly. And it has huge consequences for both the people and the wildlife in the region.

Really love the way you guys made an extensive research over this video cause it's not include a particular single country but 2 Country and not just any other country 2 superpowers of the world...

I mean it sounds like as a country becomes more prosperous they're more willing to protect their environment.

All these videos do is serve to remind us that humanity will be its own downfall, without nature there is no humans and that's all there is to it, so let all these big powerhouses destroy everything, us, along with them, will suffer and die for it.

2:02 Just to correct a glaring historical mistake, the region along the Amur river was the jurchen/manchurian homeland, so the russian pioneers/colonists never expanded down the amur as much as venetians merchants expanded venice to include all of France - if anything certainly didn't require the jurchen/manchurian expansion due to some stated fictional 2:39 russian negligence and losing the manchurian homeland to the manchurians.

More than war casualties, human driven deforestation and wild habitat loss causes great degree of pain and sadness. Sometimes encouraging suicidal depression takes over to cull this extreme pain us humankind manufacture.

Amur tigers and leopards used to be found in our country. Tigers are especially important as in Korean culture, the tiger symbolizes strength and power, and are seen as the guardian spirit and protector of the Korean people. We hope to bring back the tigers to our peninsula, more importantly to Mount Paektu which is the known as the birthplace of our revolution against the Japanese.

I have to point out that back in 1960s, we China had nearly 1 billion people to feed. No country in history has ever had such population. Many Chinese people died because they didn't have enough food, including one of the sisters of my grandmother. We could talk about envrionmental protection only when we no longer suffer from starvation.

Excellent content. The Greece - Turkey conflict on the Aegean sea is threatening maritime life because of the existence of crude oil in the depths of the sea that Turkey desperately wants to extract. There has been several arsonings on Greek Islands at the border in an attempt to force the Greek people to surrender those areas where the oil is located. More of a political situation really but definitely worth mentioning.

Why not do a video on American initiated Trade War with China inadvertently caused deforestation in Amazon rainforest? (China switched to Brazil for corn and soybean import in retaliation of US tariff on Chinese goods. Of course, Brazilian could have done something to increase production without deforestation, but it is kind of inevitable though basic economics. If the trade war didn’t happen, we would potentially have more rain forest today.)

What a disingenuous way to spin history "meanwhile from the south, the Manchurian Qing Empire was staking it's claim" the video make it sound as though the land was Russian as of right and the Manchurian were outsiders invading to acquire it which is totally FALSE. The lands were native to the Manchurians who are the indigenuous people there, it is the Russians whose homeland is in Europe that are the foreign intruders. The Treaty of Nerchinsk was signed in 1689 where the land between north bank of Amur and Stanovoy Range were reccognised it as that of Qing China by Russia. And then, "the area remain uncontested until 2 centuries later" - which again is false as going by the Treaty of Nerchinsk Russia has already Qing's sovereignty over it - how can it be uncontested ???

It's amazing how the size of Asia can make the climates there so much more intense, especially when it comes to cold in East Asia. Hong Kong is 235 miles further south than Miami, Florida but it regularly gets cold snaps in the winter that bring frost. Hanoi, Vietnam is even further south and it experiences the same. I guess it's similar to how Texas seems to get so much more snow and freezing weather than one might expect.

Russia is a multinational country and this is due to the fact that Russia preserved the indigenous peoples, and did not destroy them, the Europeans destroyed the Indians in America. Therefore, as a Siberian, it is funny for me to hear such a comparison.

It sounds like Chinese depleted vast wilderness, however research on the past decade tells that China is the only country which has reversed deforestation and actually increased the coverage of vegetation. Considering it's a country of 1.4 billion people, it's really difficult to manage the balance of nature and agriculture. On the Russian side, they have far less population living in this region. Most lands remain uninhabited. The logging economy won't be a severe issue as long as people constantly change places of fetching timbers and let forest take time to restore itself.

Hey Terra Mater! This is a truly great channel and will grow magnitudes in the future, that I am sure of. BUT, please would you find a new place for your logo/watermark. Somewhere that is more up to today's standards and is not an intrusive big white rectangle in a spot where literally no one else is putting anything for a reason. I love you guys and will watch every one of your videos, but a little modernization along with viewer comfort would only benefit both parties. Move or redesign that ugly white box if you could please.

It is clear that the makers of the video do not know that industrialization and large-scale agriculture are the most effective means of saving the ecology. Haphazard development and decentralized agriculture cannot meet the needs of a growing population, and it is industrialization that can absorb enough people into industry to keep them from falling into the Malthusian trap. Secondly, China's investment in environmental protection is one of the strongest in the world, this river is an agricultural area but most of it is still no man's land, in a world where forests are declining, China has changed the entire northern ecology through decades of reforestation, they have increased the forest area almost as much as the world has deforested, I have never seen any other country do this in the world. I've never seen any other country in the world do that.

I think India and Bangladesh have done a relatively good job preserving the Sundarbans considering those are some of the most fertile and densely populated areas on earth

About 20 years ago, a famous millionaire and politician, Francisco Javier Errazuriz, bought some land upstream from a village in an oasis of the Atacama desert. He bought water rights, as water is a private asset in Chile. He soon, took all the oasis water for his tropical fruit plantation and left the village farmers dry. Most of the villagers, after living there for generations, went bankrupt and had to migrate to the city. The same procedure was copied by other rich businessmen in the semi-desert near central Chile (Valparaíso Region, Petorca Province). They constructed export quality avocado plantations on the hills upstream from villages. They built illegal wells in the river bed and pumped the water up to their plantations on the hills through big pipelines. As a result of this, the traditional villagers not only lost their farm water, but also their drinking water. For more than 10 years they have been collecting drinking water from tank trucks sent by the town hall. They now have to open bowels in plastic bags, as there is no water in their toilets.
