This video takes a look at the recent rise of the Colorado Avalanche who have built what many would say is the best team in the NHL. They have been building this squad for over a decade and a lot of it started during the 2009 Draft.

Players like MacKinnon and Rantanen sticking with the Avs instead of being traded for an extra 1.5 million a year to another team speaks volumes in terms of team building for sure.

That's how dynasty's get built, players willing to stick around for perhaps less money than what there worth. Not many in the league willing to do that anymore. Ironically look at Stamkos and Kuch who both did just that.

@@becausereasons41 I don't disagree at all. Sakic has made his mistakes...eh the disaster of Patrick Nemeth,& Soderburg as our deadline last season,but overall he's been great. But Yzerman is 1 of the few gms,I'd put above Joe right now. Amazing how similar they were as players...& now as gms. And I expect Detroit will probably be back to the Cup Finals in the next 3 years or so....maybe against the Avs.

I work in Denver at a late night spot. I’ve had about the same 10 Avs players in over the last 6 months with their WAGS. A few Nuggets players as well, and god knows how many Broncos/Rockies players I didn’t recognize. I really only follow hockey, and am just getting into baseball. I’m a born and bred Bruins fan as well. A few of the guys I’ve served include Rantanen, Kadri, and OConnor. Every single Denver athlete I’ve had in had been incredibly nice. Would have liked to hear a little more of your input on Devon Toews. Colorado traded 2nd rounders in 2021 & 2022 (which obviously would be later picks as Colorado is one of the better teams in the league and could predictably finish higher in the standings). This was an absolute steal for the Avalanche. 27 years old (prime years for a D-man), only $4.1 mil cap hit, solid defensively and contributes to offence at a career 0.54 pts/game. Morgan Reilly of TML (whom is considered more of an offensive defenceman) is a career 0.56 pts/game. I believe he is going to have a huge impact come playoff time as well.
@DropthePuckHockey
@DropthePuckHockey 2 года назад
Yeah, didn’t spend too much time on him in the vid, but he was an absolute steal no doubt. Ik the islanders had some cap issues but I still don’t understand why they traded him and couldn’t make it work. Toews and makar are an unreal d-pairing
@jasonsmith5226
@jasonsmith5226 2 года назад
Toewes gets so overlooked cuz of Makar,& even Byrum sometimes,I wonder how many Av fans-let alone NHL fans-know Toewes was 9th in Norris last year,& is averaging over 1 point per game this season-hes on like 85 point pace for 82. There's no question he's a top 7-10 defenseman in the NHL. But he gets so overlooked,cuz Makar might be the best,at such a young age. But understanably,Toewes is probably a bit more consistent deffensively than Makar,at this stage of their careers. Toewes is vastly superior defensively to Morgan Reilly.And for much of the season,Toewes was slightly outscoring Makar per game. Obviously not in goals,Makar is 2nd to no defenseman there.

As an Avs Fan who went to his first game when the Avs tanked for Mackinnion and growing up watching Hejduk and watching my Avs through those dark years I stuck with this team hoping one day we would finally get to be the big bad machine and Mackinnion would find his rookie form again, missed the playoffs for 3 straight years and the 2014 run ended in heartbreak little did I know at the time, we were in for a long drought and tough drought, when the Avs hit rock bottom in 2016-17 I wanted to leave for Vegas as some fans were doing but then I decided, I’m a Coloradoen dang it and I prefer my team my House, so I watched that 2017-18 season and the magical run we had, and drafting Makar in 2017 what an incredible pick that would be, and the Avs had that out of nowhere type 10 game winning streak, and in game 82 the playoff clincher, I was in tears for the intro, idk y but that intro on altitude hit different, and when we won I was so excited I jumped out of my seat nearly breaking my net when Landy hit that empty netter, I knew we would get our asses kicked by Nashville, but we made it series pushing it to 6, and in 2018-19 we made the second round and watching that offside goal, we were so close to reaching WCF both the vey next year in the bubble where that year the Avs we see today started to take form, and last year while we choked to Vegas we finally had something going for us, and hopefully this is our year we finally lift that 21 year drought and win the damn cup, now LETS GO AVALANCHE, do it for Pierre Lacroix to boys

Can't say enough about Rants , MacK , Kadri , Landy but let's review. The aquisition recently of Manson , Sturm , Cogliano and Lehkonen shore up some defensive/ 2nd/3rd line woes that the Avs have suffered. Girard is on fire , Toews is spectacular with Johnson and Johnson completing the set. Newhook is develping well and has hockey smarts and let's not forget Val Nichushkin , this cat is something else , big man with determination and a scoring touch. Makar is a phenom and MacDermid keeps the goons at bay. Bo Byram is looking good and needs to stay healthy. Keumper has really found his game and Franky rounds out the tending nicely. Compher and Bura need to up their game but are holding their own. This is a well oiled machine and I don't see a repeat of last years playoffs, the memory is still fresh. Good luck to all ! In the end, My Red Wings put them in their place! I will never forget the 96/97 season and watching my favorite player, Vladamir Konstatinov hoist the cup over his head! I cried, I am not even ashamed to admit that, I had tears streaming down my face in a sports bar in Grand Haven MI that night! Avs fan here , Sabres are a close 2nd in my heart. Living close in proximity to Buffalo I've seen many Sabres games , vs the Avs of course. As a kid I met all the big dogs , Crozier , French Connection , Schoenfeld, Rene Robert ect. Some of the Sabre players used to visit a local area near where I lived , great guys. Even sat behind Punch Imlach and his wife at a game as a youngster , his wifes hair was so big I could barely see past it lol. I hope whole heartidly that the Sabres become a power house soon , they are definately off to a good start.

I loved Roy as a goalie- his time here as a Head Coach was incredibly disappointing and how he left the franchise was a giant middle finger to everyone; fans and front office alike. However, if Roy hadn't left the way he did, I doubt Bednar would have been on the radar and he has been HUGE for this team.
@lionized_wingnut
@lionized_wingnut Год назад
@ForecastCold ???? ROY was and remains A person WITHOUT CLASS ...if not truly sociopathic tendencies found in way too many professional athletes from Pete Rose and Barry Bonds across the board of any North American professional league to the aforementioned Roy and his former teammate Claude Lemieux. HOF G Patrick Roy was COMPLETELY WITHOUT CLASS or decency at one of the last games played by the Wings at the famed and historic FORUM in Montreal; when the DRW lit him up for 9 goals. So barely two years removed from a Stanley Cup Championship and winner of a Conn Smythe Throphy, G Roy was humiliatingly cheered in faux fashion by hometown fans after every stop made after falling behind 7-1! Roy had been upset for the firing of head coach Jacques Demers who led them to the Cup. As a DRW fan I understood that since many did not like that Demers was fired from Detroit before going to Montreal. So there were already hard feelings between Roy and Montreal management and his then coach. YET I have already commented to @Drop the Puck ...and he commented himself in regards to the mostly joyful disposition of G Marc André Fleury ...these are grown men playing a game that children learn to play and enjoy. They make an obnoxious amount of money doing it. When Roy cannot laugh at himself or the irony of his situation ...at his size he actually became a dangerous man on the ice with a lethal weapon called a hockey stick!!! 02 DEC 1995 Roy stormed off the ice at the Forum after surrendering 9 goals to the DRW. He told the GM in the stands seated by the players bench he wanted out of Montreal loud enough for many fans and members of the press to hear. He did NOT use polite language (in French?) as I understand it! While Roy did not have the best team in front of him defensively, for the premier goalie in the NHL at that time it WAS A COMPLETE EMBARRASSMENT!!! In retrospect for all the stats and HOF accolades etc. ...ROY became a very dirty player. His lack of decent social behavior or class on that December night repeated itself many times ...up to his being let go as a coach in Denver. He has acted like a Giant Embittered Whinner many times. I could defend him by honestly saying he never truly earned the head coaching job to begin with ...yet the man is a Pete Rose styled ...albeit enraged sociopath! Many players ...forwards from the DRW team of same era related many times the change in personality that came over Roy after that Dec 1995 game in Montreal. Instead being a goalie who pushed on forwards screening in front of the crease as was commonplace... Patrick Roy took ANY AND EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO NOT ONLY SLASH BUT LITERALLY HACK AT THE BACK OF OPPONENTS LEGS WITH BOTH HANDS ON THE STICK AND JABBED AT THE LOWER BACK WHERE NO PADDING EXISTED. This kind of play could easily CRIPPLE A PERSON FOR LIFE. Roy was NOT KNOWN FOR THIS PRIOR TO DEC 1995! Hockey Reference lists Roy as 6'2" and 185 lbs. from his playing days. This is on the lighter side of EXAGGERATION. He regularly played at 220 to 230 lbs. as Scotty Bowman knew from friends still within the Montreal organization prior to Roy going to Denver. My point? When a large man at 6'2" and 230 lbs. is using one or both hands on a hardened hockey stick to chop at your legs and back ...that is NOT worthy of penalty time ...IT IS WORTHY OF PRISON TIME IN THE REAL WORLD. Trying to clear the area in front of the then new halo shaped goalie crease is not justification for assault-and-battery!!! F Sergei Federov told a Detroit reporter after going to play for Carolina that Roy had the reputation league wide for being the dirtiest goalie and one of the dirtiest players in the game. HOF? Best goalie in History? NOT IN MY BOOK. HORRIFIC human being and NEARLY NEANDERTHAL Patrick Roy!!! He destroyed the career of F Johan Fransson with multiple cheap shots to his lower back... using the butt end of a stick and jabbing at his spine! The list of DIRTY PLAYS GOES ON....Sociopathic Millionaire Patrick Roy!!!!!!!!👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎 FAVORITE PATRICK ROY MOMENTS 1) 02 DEC 1995 DRW score 9 goals on Roy driving him out of the game and Montreal in HUMILIATING FASHION. 2) 1997 WCF DRW win against Roy! 3) 2002 WCF Game #1 May 11(?) 2002 F Darren McCarty a career GRIND LINE PLAYER scores his 1st career hat trick against Roy! In total over his playoff career McCarty scored on Roy 7 or 8 times! For a 4th line player scoring on a goalie who has gone on to the HOF ...this is incredible and AWESOME. Not so incidentally BIG MAC had one of the most powerful slap shots I have ever seen into the upper corners of the net AS WELL AS A WICKED WRIST SHOT! DRW WOULD GO ON TO DEFEAT THE DEFENDING STANLEY CUP CHAMPS in the WCF! 4) 26 MAR 1997 "Fight Night at the Joe (Louis Arena)" in obvious retaliation for a murderous hit Claude Lemieux put on Kris Draper nearly a year prior, C Igor Larianov, who never fought once before takes down Colorado D Forsberg. In the ensuing brawl in which Lemieux is taken out by DRW F McCarty ...G Patrick Roy FOOLISHLY JOINS THE FIGHT. Roy is EASILY taken down by F Brendan Shanahan. When Roy tries to join the fight a second time HE IS PUCHED IN THE FACE BY A MAN NEARLY HALF HIS SIZE IN DRW G MIKE VERNON. The dirty goalie STINKS IN A FACE TO FACE FIGHT ....SOCIOPATHIC COWARD PATRICK ROY QUERY???? NHL TRIVA ....Who scored the winning goal for the DRW on that March 1997 Fight Night @The Joe???? Who else? F Darren McCarty! Got alot of goals on him regular season as well! Did any other NHL franchise light up G Patrick Roy as much as the DRW? DOUBT IT!!!!!

The league has tough good players through out.. yes, today the Aves have choice players- sometimes they barley sqeek out a win.. but they win yes! Weak teams give the Aves a run for it, like Arizona. Aves loose to them - when as good as the players are should demolish by 2 goals. If the Aves think this will get them a Cup, (ummm) I can't put my finger on why but - the playoffs are brutal - they may have to have some very choice plays in the power play. That could give them the edge! - backup goal tending - Pavel is good but ... -- They need to win more faceoff !! Pittsburgh, hurricanes lightning are still coming to town will be a real test -

Dynasty teams must have players like Sakic and Yzerman who want to stay with a team and feel like part of the community . Ironicly Stamkos and Kuch have turned down big dollars to move on ,hence there dynasty. Sadly most players are in it for the money today.
