Kevin Williamson was an aspiring writer in the 1990s when the Gainesville Ripper murders caught his attention. Williamson used the case to create a screenplay for a horror movie which revolved around the murders of college students and the media frenzy that ensued. That screenplay turned into the 1996 cult-classic Scream. In this documentary, witnesses and experts close to the case describe the shocking true story of Danny Rolling.

For some people they are wired different and with the perfect storm of external experiences, they can become deranged. I agree with your point, I too was abused, growing up with a vicious narcissistic mother, but we are wired differently, so it did not cause us to want to harm others. It does seem like an excuse the defense clings to with their clients. It’s a case by case basis on was it due to mental issues or you just had the propensity to do cruel and bad things with a conscience and did not choose self control? I guess you know by behavior over time.

What people fail to understand is Danny likely was developmentally stunted through head injuries his father subjected him to. He was kicked across a room at only 7 months old, his younger brother was abused as well but not to the same physical extent as Danny. People who knew him while growing up noted that he didn't seem to mentally age past 14. Honestly his father deserved to be imprisoned but with his law enforcement status he got away with abusing his wife and children. The effects of parental upbringing are so real and it breaks my heart for Danny. He probably wouldn't have done those things if he grew up healthy.

Shoulda. Woulda. Coulda. Let's just kick back and watch some OJ highlights. We all have to play the hand we are dealt. There are shitty people who had privileged upbringings, and great men who started out with everything against them, it is all the choices we make. The guy never wanted to take any responsibility for his own actions, always looking for another excuse for his choices.

One of the problems with severe ch!ld abu$e is that, after the victim of abu$e commits a crime (or multiple crimes) it seems both obscene and unjust toward their own victims to feel compassion for them as children too. Most people's conscience needs a clear separation between the two. What the people cannot accept is that the abuse is an explanation of the cause, not an excuse for it. Rowling was both a victim of abuse and a vicious abuser himself, which most of the people cannot reconcile. Saying that not all ch!ld abu$e victims do not become criminals makes no sense, because we are not all the same. Some peopke can survive, heal and overcome unimaginable horrors, others break after much less. Perhaps "splitting" Rowling into a child victim and an adult killer is a way to both feel sorry for the boy whose father was a violent, sadistic monster and hate the man who committed all these inhumane crimes. Again, having compassion for the abuse he went through as a boy does NOT mean condoning his later crimes in any way, shape or form.

I said that to say this, that man had a ton of children. That same daughter grew up and committed suicide. He chose not to take his meds, committed a crime and went to prison. Not a psychiatric hospital but prison. I just think it can be difficult to try to keep someone on their meds or in counseling. I understand to keep supporting that person but as soon as that person hurts a child, I can't say that I will be as supportive.

23:59 this part sounded like a movie, where the victims tend to run from the killer in the wrong direction..which always frustrates me. In this real story, the 4th girl actually had an advantage over the other victims, since she heard her roommate's screams, she could have escaped, if only she would run OUT of the house, and not into her room with thin wooden doors..of course he easily kicked that door open and got to her.. such a shame..

People - no matter who, or what childhood is, or their genetics - need to be told, and over and over to the 1,000 degree, behavior/actions are a choice that individuals are ultimately self responsible for. A choice self responsible for. That’s the world, that’s life. No, it’s not fair. Sure, study and become an expert medically and psychologically and socially, seek to understand it all. But, it doesn’t change this one truth - an individual is responsible for their choices, for their actions, their behavior. That needs to be said often, and consistently, to everyone, all the time. Over and over. Nobody needs or has to murder anyone. No matter their make up, it’s a choice. Don’t make that choice. If you do, you are a murderer and should spend the rest of your life in jail for it. Don’t need the death penalty for several reasons, but life without parole is justified.

I hate when ppl say "I had a bad childhood and I turned out fine" first off, most of these ppl are full of sh*t. Second, the ones who actually DID turn out fine were just lucky. If you can just "get over" years of abuse, hatred, and evil, good for you. Not everyone can. Oh sure, you can TRY to get out of bed everyday with a positive attitude. You can TRY not to become the thing you hate, but sooner or later all that bad stuff that was done to you, is gonna find a way to express itself.

While I tend to enjoy shows like this...this one made me kinda angry with how hard they laid in on the mother who was most likely also being abused, even if just being a witness to the treatment of children she was trying to protect and take care of. Somehow turning the love of what she could manage into it sounding like HOW DARE she fall in to an abused woman pattern of back-and-forth and contribute to his mentality. Let the blame fall where it should be: pretty much solely on the father, at least in the time of youth.

Nah you're obviously overlooking this. The mom was a p.o.s too. She deserves all the hate as well. She could have left. She didn't. She's as guilty as everyone. Stop it. And I'm a woman saying this 😅

Ignore the so called womans comment above. saying its the moms fault Unless youve been through it then shut up. D.V shelters are mostly horrid , family deserts you, going back is almost always the only option. Of course living with an abuser wrecks havoc on your mentality. Stop blaming victims, people, the suffering from D.V. NEVER goes away. Im freaking crippled now and stupid cops and F.B.I. wouldnt help just told me to move.AGAIN. 23 STATES over 100 moves since 1993 . So piss off victim blamers.

His choice to kill women was his to be made. Without extensive mental help, horribly abused children will never have happy normal lives, and let's face it, this guy's father belonged in jail, he was a monster in his own right, but how many people are even capable of this. Would Rollings have been a serial killer otherwise, I don't know, but he decided he wanted to annihilate what he couldn't have.

He acted on his pain that caused by his father by being abusive toward him and to be called a useless human being then later in his life his wife filed for divorce which is the one that confirmed his father's statement by saying his son is useless thats why he killed those women as a form of revenge to his ex wife

Of COURSE it’s Florida. A lot of killers and serial killers hale from the sunshine state or committed their crimes there. And Florida, among other things, is also the birthplace of death metal music, Marilyn Manson, spring break insanity and the cocaine trade in the United States. As well as my birthplace. Which is why my family and I left Florida when I was a kid. 😂

This is very interesting, but anyone who knows the backstory of the Scream movies KNOWS that this serial killer did not inspire the scram movies. 'Horror movies' was the theme throughout the scream movies, that's not the case here.

u have a mom and dad that has baby animals and birds around showing their baby from day one hugs and kisses, and that all that child sees is hugs, kisses and love with smiling faces. no yelling and screaming, zero beatings. now 180 what i just said. #2 grows numb to violence, doesn't perceive violence the same way as baby #1. #2 never experienced hugs, kisses and love. only negative remarks and beatings. he basically was beating into submission to become a violent killer. he was programmed into a killer by his father. read some mind control book, his father used some of the same tactic the government uses to reprogram. imagine being taught this as a baby on tell adulthood?
