Fun fact: The table scene was not scripted! They wanted Jim Carrey to pull it off and have everything go flying off the table for a gag. But Carrey is such a master at it he kept doing it perfectly, so finally, he just went back and knocked everything off by hand, and that's the take they went with.
Cool knowledge. Also, the scene where cindy interviews martha may, the jewels in her hair are from the grinch's present as a kid. Shows she really had a soft spot for the guy
Jim not scripted, as Grinch, imitated director, Ron Howard directing Max on how to act like a deer. Ron Howard is known for wearing baseball caps on sets.
There was a deleted scene that shows the christmas lights contest and when the Mayor is about to announce the winner we see Betty Lou's name on the card, but he announces Martha May the winner instead to butter her up for his proposal. So the Mayor doesn't just screw over the Grinch, he'll screw over anyone else who gets in his way.
i remember seeing this on the tv version including the one where the post office clerk was being thrown with money and him yelling “don’t forget your change!” but i wonder why they never included it when it arrived on hbo max! 😭
@@xoler2167 right, they only close that subplot with Betty moodily sticking tags on a present and muttering to herself about having to try harder next year.
1.Jim Carrey deserves all the credit in the world for being able to stay so "animated" in his usual Jim Carrey way underneath all that makeup Especially since just the process of putting the stuff *on him* was both mentally and phisically exhausting. 2. You know we've hit an *interesting* point in society when the Grinch is lowkey insanely relatable XD 3. Keep in mind that Max was probably a puppy that someone threw away and the fact that the Grinch actually takes good care of him just makes him more sympathetic.
He even admitted that he almost quit the role because of how long he needed to remain seated for the makeup to be applied. He had to train with CIA operatives in order to be able to tolerate it for 8 and a half hours
Also, Jim adlibbed most of his lines(Including the directing scene because one day on the set Jim was bummed out and exhausted by the make-up process so Ron Howard directed him in full Grinch make-up so the impression was his way of saying thank you to the director.)
35:50 Fun fact: in this version, after the narrator says the Grinch's heart is too sizes too small, the Grinch's heart shrinks a size and a half after he commits his evil deeds during the day. So by the end, after his heart has grown three sizes, it's still half a size too small, which is why he's still a little bit of a jerk.
Fun fact: The makeup process for the Grinch took so long to apply, Jim Carrey had to undergo Special Ops training to learn how to withstand torture. Also, that's Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lector) as the narrator. And Taylor Momson, who played Cindy Lou Who, is now the lead singer of The Pretty Reckless.
a fun fact i recently learned: in the scene where cindy-lou is interviewing martha may, martha is wearing the remains of the grinch's angel from childhood as an accessories in her hair.
This was a really under-appreciated movie when ti came out. Roger Ebert (RIP) and "concerned parents" calling it "too dark and scary for kids" and not having "enough heart." I remember loving it. I saw it with an ex in the movie theatre and it was one of the few movies we almost watched from start to finish. The social commentary is strong with this one. Jim's monologue (all ad libbed) about commercialism was basically dismissed as "not matching the tone of the movie," which makes no sense to me. It's a darker movie (at times), so it's perfect for something semi-serious. I like that they gave The Grinch a bit of a backstory. But I can't watch Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lu Who and not be creeped out a bit, knowing how she grew up. For so long, I only knew her as a little girl. I feel old.
There's a very popular theory that his speech about all the Christmas presents he finds in the dump is also an explanation for how he got Max. Just a little Christmas puppy that someone didn't bother taking back and just up and dumped.
Becourse the whos only like the feeling of giving and receiving the gifts, they really dont care about the actual things in the gifts. So max was just an other thing thrown out with the wrapping paper and boxes.
To this day this movie surprises me with how much “adult stuff” it got away with. The flashback has 2 very good ones that are just . . . shocking and hilarious once you’re old enough to get it
Lol. When I asked my mom one Christmas about what the keys in that jar was for she was quick to answer that it was because the people in the party were drinking and they put their keys into the bowl because if they were so drunk they couldn’t find their keys, welp, they aren’t driving home. I later found the real reason but it was a pretty quick and smart answer on my mom’s part.
There was no one better to play this character than Jim Carrey who gave him personality to the Grinch and he gave his touch to a movie that cannot be missing this Christmas season.
My father introduced me to this movie when I was five, at that moment I knew I wanted to do something creative and to this day Jim Carrey as The Grinch is why I went into filming and voice acting.
“4:00-wallow in self-pity. 4:30-stare into the abyss. 5:00-solve world hunger (tell no one). 5:30-jazzercise. 6:30-dinner with me (I can’t cancel that again). 7:00-wrestle with my self-loathing. I’m booked!”
Ah yes.... My go-to Christmas movie! Jim Carrey really nailed being the Grinch, even with his improv scenes, like the tablecloth scene and Max as a reindeer bit!
If you've never seen the original Grinch from the 60's, you definitely need to react to it. Boris Karloff is just absolutely perfect in that adaptation.
this is my all time favorite Christmas movie, I can watch it during the whole year not just December and immediately go into the Christmas spirit. I hope you liked it as much as we fans did
I love the way Jim Carrey sang the iconic song "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" while adding his own comedic elements to it like the hilarious sound effects. And his freak out when the sleigh takes off. "We're going to die!! We're going to die!! I'm going to throw up, and then I'm going to die!! Mommy, tell it to stop!!"also I really love how the actress who played Cindy Lou, Taylor Momsen went on to be the front woman and lead singer of a band called The Pretty Reckless.
I love How the Grinch Stole Christmas as Jim Carrey did such a great job as the Grinch! I love the comedy, cast and scenery! I also think Max is such a lovely dog and would love a dog like that! Loved the reaction Timothee!
The Grinch isn't irrational for hating the Who's and Christmas because he himself voiced his distaste for commercialism, and the soulless shills who ate it up. When he saw the Who's finally didn't value the materials of the holidays, his heart grew because he saved them, and he was their saviour, and all his suffering wasn't in vain.
Jim Carrey is a legendary actor and has brought a lot to the Grinch’s character in this film! I enjoyed this live adaptation to Dr. Seuss’s book, it’s a fun film imo. If you haven’t seen it yet, Illumination’s animated film of the Grinch is a good one too and I recommend it as well.😉
Jim Carrey always loves adding a bit of dramatic flair to his characters.💚 If you wanna see more Jim Carrey, Tim, check out 2009's Christmas Carol where he plays as Ebenezer Scrooge. I bet that'll knock your socks off!❤️ Anyways, happy holidays!💖
The Grinch's journey throughout the entire movie was a symbol for these two points: 1. Good can turn evil (e.g. your best friend becoming your worst enemy) 2. Evil can become good (the Grinch returning Christmas to its rightful place) ☃️
What makes Jim Carrey such a great actor is because he's VERY dedicated, for example he had an allergic reaction to the eye contacts that he had to wear while playing the Grinch but you could never tell.
Jim Carrey must have needed surgery after this because he carries the entire film on his back. If anyone else had been cast in the role of the Grinch, the film would not have worked at all. Carrey’s performance IS the film.
19:06 This composition is originally from the film “Chariots of Fire”, which is about two British athletes participating in the 1924 Olympics. The film won four Oscars. The composer for this film (and this track) is Greek composer Vangelis.
I enjoyed this movie. Jim Carrey's performance will always be funny, Cindy is very nice and wants to make everyone happy and this is the best Christmas movie ever made 🎄🎄🎄🤣🤣🤣
This is far and away my favorite Christmas movie. I will watch this film at least a dozen times year-round. Jim Carrey has so many iconic roles and this is easily in my top 3. Taylor Momsen is also so good. The Whos are the real villains of the movie and you won't convince me otherwise.
I really love this movie, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t like Christmas movies or Christmas music. It’s funny and it’s heartfelt and nostalgic while still being a somewhat fresh take on the character. This to me is one of Jim Carrey’s best comedic roles. He went through so much just to finish this movie, almost quitting because of the tole it took on him just to go through the make up and prosthetics process- but he didn’t and it’s a classic that I will never be bored of watching every Christmas.
Out of All of the Version of the Grinch, this Is my Favorite One of them All as it's the Most Emotional Grinch and Jim Carrey managed to pull a Masterpiece with the Yak Fur as this is One of his Bes Roles.
I shudder to imagine how much money and time it took to make this. The sets, the props, the clothing, most of the effects, the fact that everyone had on make up, almost everything in this movie was created.
Oh my god! The Jim Carry Grinch is the BEST GRINCH CHRISTMAS MOVIE IN HISTORY!!!! No one can play a better Grinch than Jim Carry!!!! My sister and I LOVE watching it every year!!!! My sister's favorite Jim Carry Grinch quote is, "But what would I where?" My favorite Jim Carry Grinch quote: "Jury duty, jury duty, jury duty, blackmail, pink slip Chain letter, eviction notice, Jury duty..." 🤣🤣🤣
This one will always be my favourite Grinch movie❤❤❤ Jim Carey was made for this role and he did such a brilliant job especially with all that makeup they put on him😊Thanks for the reaction can’t wait to see what other Christmas classics you do next 😊😉😁😁
The scene where the Grinch was telling Max how to be Rudolph was improvised. It was Jim Carrey making fun of Ron Howard, who directed the movie, on his directing style. Ron Howard thought it was so funny so they kept it in.
The Grinch will always be my favourite Jim Carrey performance! He is literally what makes this movie so iconic, and does a brilliant job at making his character relatable despite how over the top he is. Although I think the 'Sean Connery' voice is a little unnecessary, and could've used his natural voice, it doesn't take too much away on what makes his performance great!
In the year 2000, released a Christmas classic, starring the hilarious Jim Carrey, who in this movie is static. Based on the Dr Seuss book, a perfect book to catch, this movie is better than the animated version with Benedict Cumberbatch. (I’m rhyming because this is a Dr. Seuss movie)
My favorite adaptation ❤️❤️❤️ I never read a Dr. Seuss book because he's sadly not so popular in Brazil, but I know how much important he and his books are
A lot of people don’t like this movie but I love it. Jim carry just owns the grinch and I think gave the best Christmas message about the toxic commercialism that comes with it.
This movie is iconic it's hilarious with so many adult jokes My favourite bit is where he's experiencing like a heart arrhythmia and feels happiness for the first time Jim Carrey *IS* the grinch to me :3
This movie is definitely one of my guilty pleasures and i do watch this movie every Christmas because it may not be the Chuck Jones special that i love or the book but there are something good to be had with Jim Carrey as The Grinch and its' good Oscar winning make-up. ^^
I know people prefer the original cartoon and the Illumination version over this but Jim Carrey is what makes this film work if it was anyone else I don’t think it would be as funny this was designed for Jim and that’s why it’s good
I literally had no idea there were a handful of people who disliked this film until now. I absolutely love it and the the Illumination one to me isn’t that good to the fact I legit forget it exists
That’s because it is Hannibal Lector! The narrator of How The Grinch Stole Christmas is Anthony Hopkins! (Also known for playing Odin in the Thor movies!)
It is reported that Jim spent 92 days doing makeup everyday. He sought help from A CIA agent , the speciality is torture resistance techniques. He was going to quit the movie , but he wanted to do it for the kids. Talk about *Method Acting* Jim is the 🐐. 💪🤙👍 Edit : thanks for the love Tim. 100k celebration soon🎉
Ohhh I LOVED Jim Carrey's The Grinch has always been my most favorite holiday movie that made me laugh every single decade since childhood memories. 🎄🎅❄️ You'll love The Grinch from Chuck Jones animated special and illumination's animated film with Benedict Cumberbatch.
You can tell that after The Grinch, Jim Carrey didn’t want to pass on the opportunity to do another future Dr. Seuss book-turned-movie. Thus why he became the titular elephant Horton in the 2008 film Horton Hears A Who.
I wish they would have had him interact with his parents more while he was in the town like they talk about how he's been doing all this time or out of all the houses he didn't steal from theirs or at the end he says thank you to them for taking him in
I loved this film and it's a family tradition to watch it Christmas Eve. ❤ This and the Home Alone 1 & 2, The Santa Claus films are movies that the family always watch each year.
37:16, a 1966 made for television cartoon special starring Boris Karloff, Frankenstein’s Monster himself, as The Grinch. And that adaptation actually was written by Theodore Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss).
Hey, Tim, I don't know if anyone told you, but you might be interested to know that the little girl that played Cindy is now the lead singer in the band, "The Pretty Reckless."
RIP actor Josh Ryan Evans who played the young grinch every time i watch this movie decades ago cause of death was Congestive heart failure gone to soon but not forgotten
I heard a theory about Max, the dog. In 20:44 he's saying what happens to all the unwanted presents, including a pony. Some people believe that this was what happened to the dog and the Grinch took him in, that's why Max is so loyal despite the Grinch's bad attitude.
Thanks, Timothée! 💗 I hope someday you'll watch the original animated version from 1966. #TimotheeReacts #RonHoward #HowTheGrinchStoleChristmas #HowTheGrinchStoleChristmas2000
A lot of math and science RU-vid channels make theory videos about exactly how strong Grinch really is. But I haven't seen one that examines Max and how a small dog pulled that entire sleigh up the mountain.
Believe it or not, I had this theory that the Grinch's parents are actually from Halloween Town (home of Jack Skellington), & in order to save the Grinch's life, they ship him out of Halloween Town, because there are other parents that were bullying.
I never saw this movie but I do remember seeing bits and pieces of it as a kid and Jim Carrey's take on the Grinch freaked me out. I will say this though about the movie, I think it was cool how Whoville was inside a snowflake. It was a nice nod to the book 'Horton Hears a Who!'
