I've been playing for over 2500 hours since day zero. Never looked back. And I've spanned two galaxies. Sean Murry sold his house, suffered an inundation that flooded his job site and wiped out his data, and put up with death threats when the game first game out. I know he believed in his game, so I believed in him.

Sean sold his house to fund Joe Danger, not No Man's Sky. They did however had to deal with lawsuits for bullshit like using the word Sky in the title.

It's a game I've been coming back to repeatedly since 2016, being a fan of sci fi from the 70s and 80s it captures that mood perfectly, I find it stirs the imagination and provides a really relaxing type of gameplay that no other game has. That said, a few criticisms of the game are justified, eg the Artemis questline, the first few missions are a tutorial which is fine, but much of the 2nd half of the questline is just pointless busywork: go here, collect that, go there, collect that, go here, talk to this NPC, go there, talk to that NPC. The other issue is the dialogue choices, they have zero impact on the outcome/ending, they might as well just be cutscenes. The only other minor issue I have, and this is just a personal one, I'd love to see planets with cities at some point. Within the logic of the game world, I find it odd that three different races who have mastered interstellar travel would only build small outposts and research stations on the planets they'd colonized! Anyway great vid, thumbs up

Maybe some players can join together and build a city together? That would be pretty cool.
@thomashewitt8104

@Call of Gruty I get that, but also I feel like those aspects of the lore are really just there to give an in-universe explanation for features that they have been unable to implement so far. Since the universe itself is an Atlas simulation within the game’s lore, there’s no reason why the lore itself couldn’t change if they do add cities in a future update. Also it could be extremely neat as an advancement of the game’s story if the idea is that we have to fight back against the sentinels in order to build cities. Like maybe cities which spawn will occasionally be attacked by sentinels and players can earn rewards by defending them, in a similar way to defending random freighters being attacked by pirates. I think that could pair well with a ground-combat overhaul to make the sentinel attacks more engaging.

I've played NMS off and on since the Pathfinder update and seeing the universe evolve has been an absolute joy. Fair warning to new players, there's another update coming soon and the first couple weeks can be pretty buggy, but Hellogames has been very good at addressing them quickly. I'll also recommend finishing the story ASAP. It's not long and it teaches you all the basic mechanics of the game. But just the basics. There's a lot more out there to find that the game never explicitly tells you about. Every aspect of the game has become about exploration.

To be honest it's still pretty much same game what they need is biomes and more things to do when on a planet. I love everything they have done to make the game better it's an amazing game but in my opinion it still suffers from not having enough to do while on planets.
@Jamsterman25
@Jamsterman25 3 года назад
I can sort of agree with this, but I think the point is that you move on till you find a really interesting planet then you can make it a home by building an epic base. The game has more mechanics that push you to explore the galaxy rather than sit on one planet
@samhaskinmusic

@@Jamsterman25 ya but a game based solely on exploration you have no reason to explore because every planet has the same structures your mining the same things it's just alot of the same and that makes you less inclined to explore because your not going to see anything new just more of the same.
@nutellabrah6718
@nutellabrah6718 3 года назад
@@jbrink1789 yeah I agree. And biomes in the sense that theres stuff thats unique ONLY to that said biome to actually have a reason to go to a different place. In NMS the different planets are essentially reskins of the same general biome. its just a different skin of the same carbon oxygen and other basics. While in other games the structure is more separate and defined so entering a new biome is inherently more exciting and rewarding. The reskins are probably one of the biggest fundamental weak links in having it go to the next level of pleasure and keep it as just mere grinding addiction as opposed to full on classic survival addiction like Subnautica and Valheim.

The simple fact that the game is still being worked on and improved is almost unheard of for 5 year old game. Expansions like living ships and creature companions would never have been free from Bethesda or Origin or any number of publishers who's only mission is to leech every last cent from their customers, cudos to Hello games for that. A freighter with the Exocraft Orbital Materializer changed the game for me, that and the build camera.

I don't know how they would implement this, but they really need to add some sort of algorithm or make certain things show up more rarely or be unique to a planet. I mean, after visiting thousands of planets, they all start to be samey and don't offer anything new really. Are they ever going to give those border malfunction rings a purpose other than the same lore? What is the point of entering in data? Why are the exotic planets more boring than lush ones? Been searching for sandworms for a long time and found a worm-ridden planet, but still no worms. The black holes aren't black holes, they are more like worm holes. There is no event horizon, or disc or anything that resembles a black hole. Where are the space whales already? Why can't you build a city and populate it? There are no cities on planets? Infinite amount of space with not much in it that makes traveling to different planets different. I guess this is just like real planets...most have nothing interesting on them.

It sucks because the core gameplay loop never changed from that crappy launch Now its just dressed up in better and better graphics and with side activities for busy work It's to distract you from seeing that half the game is a mindless grind fest of staring at a mining laser and the other half is shuffling things in the inventory screen

@@driver3899 It all depends how you play the game. Do you play the game to reach the "end game", or do you play the game because you want to build multiple bases, explore planets, explore abandoned space stations, explore derelict freighters, expand the vocabulary of the different alien languages, etc.? If you are looking for end game content, No Man's Sky isn't for you. The gameplay loop is similar to Minecraft, you explore, gather materials, build, encounter ruins and mobs that are out to kill you. It is a grind fest, just like the grind in Minecraft, Warframe, WoW, etc. The problem that many people seem to have with the game is the "end game" content. The fact that there isn't anything to accomplish by the end (which is arguable). But the game has never, and will never, not be a game where you gather resources, where you build, etc. etc. That doesn't mean that the game is bad. It just means that you don't enjoy the gameplay loop, and that is okay.
@driver3899
@driver3899 3 года назад
@@Williljam this is a good comment My main point though was that the gameplay loop that people unanimously thought was crap when it first released is the exact same loop now as it was then, but it now has more filler content and with better graphics so people want to defend it If you like base building then great but that is filler and not the main aspect of the game

The real reason i miss having a PC capable of running games! Bought as soon as it came out, i realised the flaws it had and was so sad and disapointed, but i found it kinda relaxed when i went mindlessly exploring planets and animals, ruins and words. I would get bored rather quickly, but somehow i would always return to the game. My computer fried the graphics card some time ago, and i was so bored with video games, that i actually sold the rest of the components. Haven't missed playing computer games since then, but i DO miss NMS! XD

I would say get it at full price to support the devs, since they never charge for the updates and have really upgraded this game and given it lot's of love. Great vid Jamster.

It sort of just happens. The automatic stuff really pulls a person in. You set up some system to mine, and leave for another star system. Come back hours later, and you have a bunch of stuff. It makes it feel very real.

Now if they would only make native joystick / hotas control. I have thought about getting the game since it has VR support (which seems like a perfect game to play in VR), but from what I have research, its a pain settings up joystick/hotas controls.

biggest problem with this game is that it is extremely foreseeable (is that a word? you know what i mean). After like 10 hours you know exactly what will happen.. Also there are basically no challenges besides of grinding...

If you really want to enjoy NMS you have to play it in VR. I played NMS a year ago for 100 hours before quitting it. Recently I started the game a fresh but am playing with my RIFT-S VR headset and its incredible. Suddenly you're not just seeing the worlds and bases on your screen, suddenly you're on the worlds and inside your base with everything happening around you. Its fantastic. It can be a little jittery in VR but if you have a good PC performance is not bad. However it would have been nice if you managed to get to the center of the galaxy and you met aliens and then had some real story based game play just to reward you for all the work you put in. Otherwise the only real goal is to upgrade your ship, weapons, and bases and once you've done that its game over.

@RobertA-hq3vz
@RobertA-hq3vz 3 года назад
@@rhashr yes, that's true. Flying in your ship or jetpacking can be stomach churning. Thankfully the ship its fully enclosed like when you drive in a car so its tolerable. Other times I put my hand in front of my face and focus on that while flying. Other than that standing inside your base or your home world paradise planet is heaps better than just watching it on a screen in front of you. I remember once I was sitting in my ship waiting for a storm to pass and I'm watching animals roaming outside just past my ship, while seeing and hearing the raindrops hit the ship canopy and then watching the rainbow appear on the horizon. It was WOW.

I tried for a week or so. I am done with it. All planets looked the same barren wastelands with orange/blue/green filter. Animals never looked natural or interesting, they look like spore failed projects. Ship handles like shit, and I grinded to make a different one, it still handles like shit. Not my cup of tea.

This game is like you either like it or you hate it depending on what type of games u like. Good combat and story if thats your priority then not your type. If you just like to build, collect and advance then this is the game for you. I would say explore but this game Its kinda dead after few first days since u can explore almost everything that matters in first few days.

First off - I love this video, and if you do start a series on it, I'd certainly subscribe to your channel. I like your style of content, and I find that a lot of the other NMS RU-vidrs don't really make the game interesting. Also, I couldn't really find any *good* LPs of NMS either, so I think there's a wave to ride there :) Secondly, I got the game for 30 bucks on Humble Bundle, if anyone sees this, it also goes on sale for Steam Sales and like winter events too! I'm waiting :)
