Weird History Food is getting snacky with the History of Hostess. Maker of some of our favorite cakes and snacks, including Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Cup Cakes, and Ho Ho's, Hostess has been the mainstay of America's cupboards for decades. But where did Hostess begin? Well, get ready for a sugar high, we're going unwrap Hostess' long, sweet, and sometimes bitter, history.

I grew up in Chicago with a Hostess factory nearby. They had a factory store. We ate like KINGS! I suspect someone bled the company dry, profiting handsomely until they bankrupted the company. Happens a lot when companies lose market share. Someone swoops in, cashes out what they can, the company goes bankrupt and nobody's the wiser. I'm a Capitalist at heart, but milking struggling companies dry causing them to quickly collapse, is not right.

@JDoors We had a Hostess Bakery as well as an outlet store where I live. Back in the days before direct deposit I would go to the bank located by the bakery to cash my check. Ah, the AROMA of fresh baked cinnamon raisin bread! The factory is now a craft brewery. I can live with that, too.

my only complaint with hostess is when it was bought by apollo global, twinkes, cupcakes and ding dongs were smaller (don't know about the rest of the line) made quite sloppy and looked deformed. so when you open a box it looks like they were just thrown in because the box was the same size as before. the classic presentation when opening a box with organized treats is not there anymore.

Here are a few key points about the healthiness of Hostess snack products: - Hostess products are generally high in calories, fat, and added sugars. This makes them an unhealthy choice if consumed in large amounts or on a regular basis. - Specific products like Twinkies contain around 135 calories per cake with 4.5 grams of fat, most of which are unhealthy trans fats. They also contain over 13 grams of added sugars. - Hostess Donettes contain around 120 calories per serving with 4 grams of fat and 11 grams of added sugar. - Hostess cupcakes are around 300 calories each with 5 grams of saturated fat and over 22 grams of sugar. - The snacks are made with refined flour and oils and lack fiber, protein, and other nutrients. They are considered "empty calorie" foods. - However, in moderation, these snacks can occasionally be part of an overall healthy diet. Having a treat once in awhile is ok, as long as the majority of the diet is based on wholesome, nutritious foods. - When choosing Hostess products, it's best to stick to smaller single-serving sizes instead of large packages whenever possible. Controlling portions is key for limiting calorie, sugar, and fat intake. So in summary, Hostess snacks are high in unhealthy ingredients and lacking in nutrition, making frequent consumption unwise. But the occasional indulgence of these sweet treats is unlikely to be harmful for most people. Moderation and portion control are the keys to keeping these in balance.

I once named roadkill, it was an opossum but it had eyes, and you know what? I couldn't sell it to children as food, and I tried, so I put a little sugar on it, and took a bite myself. The sugar didn't make it taste much better, Ben, I named it Ben, Ben's backstory was that he really hated cars and I thought I could sell the idea, I could not. I never gave up, I just kept putting stuff on roadkill, I mainly used opossums, however, I will admit that I also used my fair share of squirrels too. Never named the squirrels, or anything after opossum number 5, I started to feel numb, no matter what I did everything tasted like roadkill, which tastes like semi rancid meat, rubber, and a bit of tar. I think I may have given it away, what I did with the meat, what it is, and what it's called today. If you haven't figured it out, let me tell you the main ingredient, and you, I think, will understand. Anuses, and lots of them too, you see that was the issue with the roadkill, they only come with one, and even though they come at least 7-fold to each anuses, their tiny opossum nipples just couldn't cut it. But I figured it out, I just needed a loan to buy that petting zoo for all of its exotic meats. You know what? I bought it, and less than a year later the world would be introduced to my delicious baby: "Steakums"!* I'm working on microwavable fish at the moment, as the cousin of Steakums. *The saying "Delicious baby" in no way is an implication that I, or anyone I have come in contact with, had anything to do with the incident. Steakums just kind of absorbs stuff when no one is watching, and there are no laws against that.

Request fir a follow up video. Zingers were originally produced and sold by the Dolly Madison Bakery and used Peanuts characters in its ads. Snoopy would appear in the ads as the Zinger Zapper. Hostess eventually bought Dolly Madison. And don't ask for a Zinger in Trinidad and Tobago - unless you want a chicken sandwich rather than a snack cake.

@StarGeezerTim
@StarGeezerTim 11 месяцев назад
Zingers and some of the other products were actually under the umbrella of a subdivision of Hostess called Dolly Madison. Dolly Madison rather famously featured Charles Schultz's Peanuts characters as product branding on all their packages, and they were the featured sponsor for Peanuts holiday specials like Charlie Brown Christmas and It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown back in the 60's and 70's (with Coca-Cola being a co-sponsor of the original airing of the Christmas special.) In 2012, Dolly Madison was liquidated from Hostess, which was bought by Apollo Global Management in 2013 for around $430 Million. So selling it to Smucker's a mere decade later for $5.6 Billion was a pretty good return on investment. Also, there was a Banana Crème Zinger that was my absolute favorite way back when and I need them to bring that flavor back before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Everything he touches decays and goes bad or disintegrates. In one scene he is driving a car (don't ask why the car did not rust when he touched it) and he is trying to eat something while driving. He grabs a few things that go bad instantly. All but a Twinkie. He ate that just fine.

@wattsisnaim8111
@wattsisnaim8111 11 месяцев назад
This was something I was expecting to see mentioned in the video. Hostess was sued by Drakes Cakes, because the Ding Dong was too similar to their Ring Ding. The court ruled that the combination of devil's food, fudge frosting, and cream filling weren't distinctive enough to be considered trademark infringement, BUT the name was too similar. So, in the areas that sold Ring Dings (primarily the northeast), they had to be rebranded King Dongs. Yes, to anyone who thought the Ring Ding was the copycat, it actually came first. Hostess didn’t introduce the Zinger, beyond creating the slightly larger Twinkie. Zingers were created by the Dolly Madison Company; which was eventually purchased by Continental Baking Company. Several other Hostess’ items were acquired that way, along with the current version of the Hostess Fruit Pie. Hostess and Dolly Madison produced snd sold fruit pies. The difference in them was Hostess had a thinner crust with a bit more ‘fruit’ filling while Dolly Madison’s had a thicker crust with slightly less filling, though they had a couple more types including chocolate. Hostess changed their pies to the thicker crust/less filling version, and added chocolate-filled, after buying their competitor. That’s also when Hostess started selling other ‘new’ items like mini muffin cakes, mini carrot cakes, individual crumb-topped cakes along with others.

You forgot to mention the old Hostess fruit pie advertisements in Marvel and DC comic books. They were tales filled with HIGH ADVENTURE!!!

Suzy Q's were my favorite in the sixties and early seventies. You know how Apollo bought them for 410 million? Smuckers had to pay 5.6 billion. That means Apollo made 5 billion 200 million dollars. The bastards have nothing to do with baking just a bunch of greedy ass investors. At least Smuckers is a stable brand able to do Hostess a good turn.

Twinkies are gross. They’re spongy and oily and not very flavorful. I don’t understand why everyone loves them so much. Little Debbie is the better junky snack cake baker.

They did die. What came back does not taste like it did. A bit smaller, darker, greasier, and the filling is not right either. One bite, and it was just toss the rest away. RIP Twinkie. The world is darker since you left....

Hostess is good, but it's got nothing on Vachon. Ah caramel, Joe Louis, and Billots!

The recipes have obviously changed over the decades. The products taste nothing like they did when I was a kid. There used to be much more filling and some actual fruit in the pies
