hey everyone, i hope you enjoyed this look back at the Legend of Korra's legacy 😄 if you'd like to support this video and future ones like it, here's my patreon: www.patreon.com/rileyjaydennis
Thanks. I am a huge fan of both this channel and the legend of korra. I never knew they had a line of book. And after that I know what I am off to go read thank you.
"Girls will consume stuff meant for boys but boys won't consume stuff meant for girls" is SUPER common thinking among kids' media executives. It really was not challenged until stuff like MLP and Korra and Steven Universe came along, even though afaik plenty of boys watched shows like the Powerpuff Girls. The corollary is "boys buy more toys, so we should only make stuff for them," which is why Paul Dini says Young Justice and Tower Heist got cancelled - too many girls watched and the execs didn't want to market to them. (never mind that the girls weren't buying the toys because there weren't any toys OF the girls) This is also why a lot of women who write kids' books end up using initials instead of their full names (K.A. Applegate, J.K. Rowling, etc.). Until Harry Potter blew up, publishers assumed that boys wouldn't read books written by women.
Korra and Asami’s relationship came out at a time when my parents were being very unsupportive of my coming out. I honestly don’t know if I’d still be alive if it weren’t for this show. I feel so grateful to the show creators for doing this
the whole time i was watching the finale i was like 'i know they wont let korrasami happen but PLEASE dont make makorra canon' and then??? they made korrasami canon??????? i lost my whole mind that day sdfjkdfsjk
LOL imagine someone saying the whole series was ruined because the hetero pairing didn't happen. Actually, you don't have to imagine it. There are forums full of upsetti-spaghetti dudes who wrote that exact thing after Korrasami aired.
I will never forget watching the finale air with my college roommates. We talked about how Korrasami was our favorite OTP of the series, but we didn't really think we'd see it on TV. When that spirit portal ending happened, we all screamed, "IT'S CANON!!!!" at the same time, and we all just jumped around squealing like morons. It was so different from anything we'd seen yet, and I'll never forget that unique feeling after seeing that on a mainstream kid's show
Ikr I feel like I can't even say a nice thing about the show under an amv video without getting someone saying um actually it's not that good blah blah blah
@@synlion but the thing is, the legend of korra is good. the problem is that people are constantly comparing it to atla, causing others to oversee its good parts such as the take on mental health and healing after korra was poisoned.
god i remember when korrasami was still a crackship and so many of us were sick of love triangles and secretly hoped korra and asami would get together just to get rid of the "two girls fighting for the same guy" trope. of course, always as a fantasy. i thought i would never see the day it became true. and ngl, LoK really helped me to accept my attraction to girls as more than platonic, and as so korra really was my bisexual icon 🤧💕
I remember my brother telling me:yk Korra and Asami are gay for each other? And my heart just went butterflies and it also helped me accept other queer characters (and ppl irl) before i accepted myself 😊❤
hold up, I just started the show. they are gonna be dating eventually? you know I don't know how to feel. I shipped them cause the videos made them look cute but isn't it beastly(I really don't get how to spell the word but I think you know what I am saying) because she is a cat?
Liza Harris I don’t want to spoil anything but in the last season there’s a build up and then some scenes at the very end making it canon. And it’s not beastiality (or however it’s spelt) because catra isn’t really a cat. Like in the Shera universe there are races of people that are mushrooms, scorpions, lizards, ect and they aren’t seen as animals or plants cause they are humanoid with the same mental development as people (I’m bad at explaining things lol) like they talk, think, act, and behave same as the human race so ye. Unlike characters like meelog. Since even though he is intelligent he is still a cat, physically, instinctually, behaviourally, ect
im sorry but all the time the only thing i can think of is that one post that said "we popping the BIGGEST bottles when makorra happens tomorrow" like assjhddf THE SHEER LEVEL OF WRONG
But doesn't that just speak more to the poorly written plot twist at the end? While I watched the entire show, I never once thought or saw anything to make me think that Korra and Asumj were heading that way. If you're going to do it, at least write it in better than have it be a near the end of the show twist. Like seriously, I watched the last episode and when they held hands, I was like "what!?" When did this happen? It seemed like it was thrown in at the last minute instead of planned out and executed properly. Season three was my favorite season anyway, so it doesn't really matter, lol. I just felt it was shoehorned in at the last minute instead of built up to.
Watching this video brought me back to that moment and all these years later just the memory makes me tear up. I was a closeted bisexual sixteen-year-old who already strongly identified with Korra as a somewhat-masculine heroine who constantly had to work out complicated problems dealing with societal norms. I wasn’t super in the fandom, so I had no idea that Korrasami was even a hope. When they walked off together, I was speechless and in tears. That was the first time I had ever seen myself actually represented in media.
What no they're clearly just gals bein' pals, you know, holding hands, walking off into the sunset to romantic music, making out a bunch (platonically) and introducing each other to their parents (as gal pals), all things I do with my perfectly platonic gal pal idk what you're talking about. (I really need to get my hands on those comics. You know, for all that good good platonic heterosexual gal pal friendship representation.)
I love how characters nowadays can't even have friends that are the same gender without people assuming there gay. Everything has to be about sex to some people I guess
I remember watching this and my mom giving me the talk that it is okay to like another girl. She's so supportive of me being bisexual and I'm so happy that a cartoon I grew up with told me that it's okay to be gay. 🙏🏻
You know, I've watched korra three times now and This still was the thing to remind me that Holy hell Asami is an actually legitimate badass. She's the Suki of this show- though not quite as 95-100% perfect as Suki was. Which is good. I specifically loved the ending of Korra because it spent SO much time in books 3 and 4 showing their time bonding and becoming particularly close friends and all of the little subtleties and unintentional things that happen between them that happen naturally when close friends go further like that, they've both seen and been there for each other at their worst, and at their best. It's pure poetry really.
I honestly thought Suki and Asami had the exact same problem as characters. They were both badass and cool and I should’ve loved them but they ended up just being blah... boring characters with no real substance
We all know that LoK had its issues and it cannot even touch ATLA BUT I'm so done with all the hate is getting... LoK was a cool show done dirty by Nick, book 3 was one of the most brutal books I've seen in my life and brought me to tears completely. The finale of season 1 was on another level of darkness for a kids show. And Korrasami... just korrasami. This show was good, PERIODT
god i so agree. korra is one of my personal favorite female characters ever bc of her emotional strength. everything she went through was so thought provoking and gut wrenching and its one of the reasons i love lok. season 1 is my personal favorite season because of the villain and storyline, and the scene after she runs away to be alone at the end and we watch her tear fall into the ocean, i just find to be so beautiful. NE ways, stan Legend of Korra
I’m sad that they weren’t able to fully show their relationship in the show (although there is definitely some really cute moments) I’m glad that we were given the comics to actually see their relationship without just hints
@@Juanmaligno It was a very ill-fated tumblr post from the day before the Korra finale. Last I checked the OP was apparently still an adamant Makorra stan, even years later.
I'd say their timing was inappropriate. I think Korra's showdown with Unavaatu should've been saved for the series' finale. The scale and emotional connotation of the latter half of Book 2 was way more suited for the end of a show rather than the middle of it.
If Nick ordered the 4 seasons of legend of Korra at the same time. I feel that it could’ve been a better show since the creators could’ve created a story throughout the 4 seasons. Instead of 4 short stories. This would’ve made it way better
I used to watch this series when I was little. I stopped because I just couldn’t find it on tv anymore, and slowly forgot about it. Before that though, I shipped Mako and Korra so hard, but now that I know that Asami and Korra ended up together, makes me hella emotional. I ship this way harder than Korra with Mako, with all my gay ass heart. We stan these gay legends.
elliott Honestly Korra got better as time went on At the time it felt like it was doing too much and i think also some aspects made no sense to us because Korea deals with more adult issues The duality of mortality Coming to terms with your own romantic feelings Taking the safety’s of the known over the possibility of the unknown Not wanting to change with the times not wanting to or not being ready to take roles you are meant to play This speaks much more to my 25 year old heart then it did when it came out - it was not too mature for young viewers - But it was clearly speaking to its older viewers At the time i felt like the whole love triangle was trying for a gender swap of the team Edward team Jacob dynamic and felt it was a cheap grab at views Now... honestly i wish twilight had taken a similar rout 😂 would have actually made story into a romeo and Juliet meets racism and not... whatever the point of twilight was 😂 The fact was that assami was the most mature person in the group Bolin was a sweet manchild Makko was a bit of a fuckboy who liked powerful women And korra was learning who she was as a person having lived a sheltered life When korra matured she realized she needed the stability and support of assami over the adventure and excitement of makko And assami clearly loved projects 😂 jk but in all seriousness she wants to stand by and support people who she respects - to bring out their full potential but she also demands respect herself definitely a dom lol That aside as i grew up, met more people, this shows characters felt more real Later i met someone who never watched avatar and honestly she went in almost blind and we watched THE ENTIRETY of avatar and korra The girl preferred korra
@@Dave102693 Lmao so were all the characters in the series. Asami had no character, Korra went from not being impacted by trauma at all (S1-2) to her being haunted by it (S3), and all of the others getting literally nothing
The show was badly written. as well as the korrasami relationship. all they did was yell "KORRA GAY" and shut the door behind them. they did it at the last moment of the last episode.
Another important thing that it seems Bryke did for Korrasami was that with The Last Airbender, the story came to a definite close with the end of the war and Aang being able to show Katara his world of peace. In the Legend of Korra, the series ends with the uncertainty of what the introduction of the spirit portal will mean for the world, but this new world is something that Korra will be able to show Asami. The lack of closure for their story mirrors the lack of closure for their relationship, both in that they don't kiss and that their relationship feels to still be building, whereas Aang and Korra's seemed to reach a bit of a stagnation point.
It did end with closure. Korra has finally become the Avatar she needed to be, humans and spirits have found a way to live in peace and the world is re-balanced. In fact, Korra and Asami holding hands is the perfect symbolism for the current status of the world, a world where nature and civilization coexist harmoniously.
Kataang is about kids who've been talking about their relationship for months finally getting to relax into it. Korrasami is about a woman who's been through hell finally reaching a point in her personal growth where she can enter a healthy relationship for the first time.
I know plenty of people would disagree with me but Nickelodeon: Let's Aang, a literal child, make out with Katara But, Doesn't allow a more blatant portrayal of 2 grown, adult women to be romantically involved Doesn't sit well with me. Just my opinion
My favourite part of Korrasami is that they were so okay with each other over Mako. But am I the only one who thought Asami didn't have nearly as much screen time in the final season as she should have.
I love Korrasami's relationship in the graphic novels. In Turf Wars they're exploring their new relationship, whereas in Ruins of The Empire their relationship is a lot more established, comfortable and solid, and it's beautiful.
In the same vein, I noticed lots of little moments throughout but especially book 3 onwards. I don’t know if it’s because I’m bi and had similar experiences with guys that resonated while watching their friendship and relationship as a whole develop. I don’t know your life as you could be anything sexuality wise 😂 but I’m thinking that might be why you didn’t see it, which is of course fine.
FireGamez765 yeah well when your a normal person that’ll happen. not like this one who loves sexualizing everything or trying to make a problem or scene of everything bc it doesn’t meet your “queer” standings
Same, i was only a child when i watched the show, but i only noticed something at that last sean bc i was way more older but also that is was weird that happened. (Still was a child)
I was about to say "I don't think Legend of Korra was the first kids show to do that" Then I remembered most of the shows I watched growing up weren't kids shows.
It’s funny that the legend of Korra showed their romantic relationship at the last possible moment like “yeah this was a thing, too late for backlash, bye!” Even though there would have been little backlash. Basically the same thing for adventure time.
I just remember how mindblown I was a few days after the finale when they made a "Korrasami Moments" compilation on the official Nickelodeon website. I feel like that was super important because the younger kids, such as myself, watching, likely wouldn't have had access to the creators' tumblrs to tell them that it was official.
@@thelastfeelbender It's an acronym for "Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist", in other words it's transphobes cloaking themselves in feminist language to defend their bigotry.
The Last Feelbender a TERF is a Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. I personally don’t think there’s much that’s feminist about it, but that’s what the acronym means. They’re arseholes who hate trans people, especially trans women, and use feminist language to paper over their bigotry. I recommend giving Contrapoint’s Gender Critical video a watch, it’ll explain everything you need to know.
All the people who say korrasami was fake need to realize this, it was NOT EVEN LEGAL to be gay. Nick's demographic was ALSO KIDS IN HOUSEHOLD WHO'S PARENTS *WOULD* send in complains and threats to nick to take it down. Asami couldn't go around hugging and kissing korra because it would be such a waste of money, time and effort to cancel a show of that scale that too of a franchise that is as huge as atla is just because millions of homophobes stop their kids from watching it. These are my opinions btw 👉👈🥺🥺 be kind if you'd like to have a conversation😊
Am I the only one who had NO idea Korra and Asami were together after Book 4?😂 I thought they were friends, I only learned about them on the internet years later😂
the representation was weak, to say the least. But those starving for representation just ate it up, and praised the writers for work they barely put any effort in.
@@_sarcasmisgreat_8707 Me too. I literally had 0 idea that they were together. Literally no clue. Not even the hand holding did anything for me. They had to literally kiss for me to understand they're together😂 I thought what they had was sincere and sisterly friendship. Oh well, here goes my childhood innocence🤣
bit late but: this is genuinely the most beautiful animated series ive ever seen. The love the animators, musicians and creators put into it is just so goddamn powerful.
Here's the thing with LOK LOK might be one of the best shows of all time simple due the fact that Korra respects the fundamentals of making a show(dynamic everything flow memorable moments ect) There are so many incredible moments not just with the main characters but with minor characters as well, the fact that pretty much everything matters in this show, all characters have a purpose And i can go on
I distinctly remember how happy I was to notice and watch Korrasami's relationship grow in the final season. Previously, I had been happy that they were showing a strong friendship between two female characters. Then, Korra read Asami's letter, and I was like, "Wait. Asami wants that girl." The last season was a rollercoaster after that!
remembering korrasami was the FIRST lgbtq+ relationship EVER on a nickelodeon tv show before gay marriage was legalized- they walked so the gays could run
As a young lesbian, I grew up on atla but couldn’t watch korra as we stoped having cable and it just came out of Netflix about a month ago. So me being 13 now watching the whole series in 2 weeks cus it was so good, I love there love story, I can see it’s more then friends, this whole series is really special to me from Korras mental heath arc which I’ve always struggled with healing mentally, to korra and Asamis relationship. I knew before even watching the show that they were cannon but the ending made me cry, even though they didn’t kiss at the end, the tenderness in there eyes and the way they held hands in the same pose as zou lee and varik during there wedding earlier shows they really were in love. Growing up a young girl in a Catholic home was hard when I had crushes on girls, knowing this aired when I was younger makes me so happy. I may not have watched it as a kid but just the thought it existed so know in newer shows like shera we can have a finally kiss of two girls.
It is good to realize that the ending of the show is the *start* of their relationship. It's Korra and Asami starting to explore what their relationship could be and their trip to the spirit world on which the show ends, is their first date. Their relationship blossoms after that (covered by the comics, as pointed out here).
I feel like because we aren't used to seeing wlw relationships on screen, nobody expects them (esp not in an animated show) and that's why people don't see the buildup for Korrasami even though there is actually a lot of buildup. I knew they were going to be canon, so I did watch out for it, but I think that as a lesbian I would have spotted it anyway lol. But yeah, stuff like this does tend to go over your head because of the lack of representation
same, when i was younger i never really focused on well written storylines and characters, i just loved how cool everything was. but now that i older, its so much better now that i can properly appreciate everything. like i didnt even realise that it was supposed to be a romantic thing until someone pointed it out
When I was little the first content of the Avatar universe I ever watched was Book 1 of Korra... and I loved it! I’ll always hold a special place in my heart for that first season of LOK - that was when my love for Avatar began.
Just watched it yesterday, you're right. And that was in *2002*. John Dilworth (creator of "courage the cowardly dog" and writer of the episode), was ON IT. ...is...was? Idk what he's doing these days...if he's still alive...
A lot of shows did it before Korra! 😂 the Stans just really wanna pretend Korra’s coming out was revolutionary and it’s like ok I’m glad you felt something positive from it but no babe it was far from revolutionary
Legend of Korra has done so much for me and I don't think any other show will ever do the same. I get so emotional when I hear the ending theme. This show is how I figured out I was trans and lesbian and it meant so much to me to see a character I already felt a strong relationship to (Korra) with another woman. I am so thankful that it exists and that I saw it when it aired, without it I would never have been where I am today and it's themes are something that has grown with me as I continue down the path this show sent me on. I could not be any more thankful.
@@geo9249 Before the lest episode of season 4 of Korra, someone who shipped Mako/Korra wrote a textpose saying something like "We poppin' the biggest bottles tomorrow when MaKorra becomes canon!" because there had been a "will Korra end up with Mako or Asami" debate going on with two factions... and yeah no bottles were popped by the makorra fans after the final episode aired, and it became a meme 😂 Edit: forgot to say this was on tumblr haha
4:53 Zuko,Lord Zuko,Roku’s great grandson,Aang firebend master,the son of Ozai,Azula’s brother,Iroh’s Nephew,hottest character of the legend of Aang, etc.
I’m actually kinda glad they didn’t kiss. They seem more like the kind of couple that wouldn’t kiss all the time, but would instead always be there for each other no matter what. They were always there for each other, protecting each other, and helping each other. A kiss is not always needed in every couple.
Lol you are stanning so hard riley detailing the relationship the way you did so far as to note who was at the table and who was at the door lmao. It's adorable though.
(Not Korra related, but...apparently the Animated series _The Loud House_ had an episode where a teenage girl goes on a date with a female classmate or something)
There's actually two gay couples in that show. Clyde, the main character's best friend, has two dads. And Luna, part of the main cast and the main character's older sister, is presumably in a relationship with a female classmate. I say presumably because it was one date but the conversation they had towards the end of the episode sounded like they were starting a relationship. Plus Nickelodeon hyped up the ship between Luna and Sam a lot.
Wait a Second! Nickelodeon was turned off by the Murder-Suicide in the Season 1 finale, But they *weren't* bothered by the Constant Predator Analogy of Amon (the Male Villain) hunting down Korra (the Female Hero) in Super Creepy Ways trying to take away her powers (and by extension, her innocence)? Hollywood moral guardianship is really screwed up.
There was a same sex couple in Good Luck Charlie far before this, but they weren't leads or anything close to that so I think this is actually amazing to see.
Same!!! I was all like "haha no I just love/worship asami bc they made her that way, yeah. No she's just badass, and a cool role model" then it got revealed that she was canonically queer, and I myself was like "...oh?". Anyways I'm pretty sure that was a pivotal moment in my discovery of myself.
This video brought tears to my eyes, because I love this show so much. Though I am not a member of the LGBTQ+ community, the thought of what it meant to so many people, just makes me so happy. I love this show, this universe, so much.
Watafuck? I think im having a mandela effect. I swear i remembered korra and asami kissing at the end and i was in pure shock. And after all those years that never happened?
Ahh Riley thank you for this video! Honestly this WAS such a monumental moment and i love remembering the history and context behind it. I !00% agree, it is so clear that the show would have been even better if it weren't for the network's bs, but hopefully instances like this will make it easier for showrunners in the future...Honestly it's wild to me that people think lgbt people appear out of nowhere lol. I am an lgbt adult, but at one point I was an lgbt kid who would have loved this kind of rep, it's p simple. Thanks again, Riley, this video is incredible!
I remember all of this like it was yesterday. I was deep in the Avatar fandom (still am) and started shipping Korrasami early season 3 when i noticed some hints. I then created a Korrasami facebook page (one of like 2 that are constantly active) and i set sail on that ship. Watching book 4 was amazing as i got to see all these little momemts. Then on December 19th someone messaged me on my Korrasami page saying "your page is about to be flooded and busier". I was in school so i had to wait until i got home to watch the finale and avoided spoiler as best i could. Someone sent in a pick of the portal hand hold scene, but i thought it was Photoshop. When i watched the finale i lost it. I couldn't believe it. My page exploded! And so did the whole internet and the debates started. Once Bryke settled it, the dust still didnt clear, but i was enjoying it all. Now we have comics, its been years and people are still talking about it. Its a day I'll never forget.
It's always nice to see that we are still talking about Korrasami in 2019. watching their scenes and listening on how they ended up together will never get old.
Even though the show did feature Korra and Asami, they didn't get together in the end and did not (in my opinion) make it very obvious that they were a lesbian couple. The creators had to come out and confirm that they were in fact together which (in my opinion) is not a good way with explicitly showing that two female characters are together. Im here for the representation but LoK, i feel like, did not fully commit to the relationship untill they thought the fans were completely here for it.
AspenPaw Arts that’s what I thought to many people say korra and asami has no connection but I just think they had limitations to what they could do at the time that the show came out many people were against lgbtq and their relationship could have affected/ caused controversy with the show
excellent video! I really enjoyed this style of yours. I'd definitely enjoy more looks into lgbt rep in animated shows. People always think of steven universe, but I think the others deserve this level of analysis.
