I like how modest this person is. Gordon Murray, great as he is, always says "I made this.." "I designed that in this way". But Frank is always inclusive with "we". ❤️
Wow, Sean, what a little, pathetic man you are if you hate other people expressing ownership of their own success and you feel entitled to the merits of their talent and hard work. You are disgusting. You are simply disgusting.
@@amjan I wouldn't call him pathetic and disgusting. Furthermore, he never explicitly said that he's disgusted by Gordon Murray/ he hates Gordon Murray. No, why are you coming to unnecessary conclusions?
The man is a legend. No BS designs with bio mimicry in mind, never adds stuff that’s not needed or faux and that’s why they don’t age, genius. More videos please......
*So basically this guy has designed pretty shitty looking cars over the years!* 😄 😄 😄 😄 F430 was meh! Nobody remembers it. P1 is remembered, but not for its looks. Definitely not for its looks! 😄 😄 😄
@@bobinpune well I see your randomly making stupid comments, but just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it isn’t good or whatever is going on in that stupid mind I can guarantee the 430 great and widely appreciated car.
@@bobinpune do you know that all people don’t think the same way? If you hate a design, it doesn’t mean it’s ugly. If 90% of the people hate it, it’s probably ugly. Now, you’re the only one within 500+ comments that doesn’t like his designs, but it doesn’t mean they are “meh”. Also, “meh” and “shitty” are not arguments, and neither are emojis, so come up with something better. Or don’t do it at all.

@@bobinpune I don't know if you're either little child around 6 years old or just a troll, the 430 is iconic just like the Maserati MC12 and Mini Cooper and Fiat 500. Pretty much every person understands how important the design of the P1 is too its performance, like the 918 and LaFerrari. Power without elegant design is meaningless to people with taste, a reason why the Bugatti chiron is such a popular car, it has both en masse. When you look at his portfolio you can see he did pretty much every type of car, small compact cars with retro design, SUVs and Supercars. All of his designs are still today considered very tasteful and successful designs.
@@bobinpune the 430 is simple, yet timeless. The MC12 is Gorgeous as well as having excellent proportions. However, I will admit that I will remember the P1 moreso by its roof scoop and the absurdly savage BOV on the turbos. Gets me every time.
@@bobinpune P1 is very recognizable with its looks. Especially the shape of the lights. I’m not even into cars but it is incredible to see a designer who has a porfolio so vast tell you his thoughts and desing insights
The P1 in my opinion is the most beautiful car ever created, so it was alot of fun to hear from the designer of it and what inspired such a beautiful piece of art
Found my current times Da Vinci! It is known that nature is our best teacher for design, but to know that much about that fish and to know how to mimic it purposefully is a mere absolute insane wizardry. I can't believe I've been alive not knowing this man. I've never learned so much so swiftly and beautifully. So thankful to you Frank!!!! Woooow!
I would draw a lot of cars and other designs as a child, but somehow my great passion as a child was lost in tedious schoolwork, but now for the first time in 24 years I have tried to design/draws cars again, and it is great fun, and a great meditation. Thank you for rekindling a passion that has been in hiatus for so long, it is like awakening a part of the soul that has been sleeping :)
I once shared a lift with Mr Stephenson. He was and is my idol. I was so nervous and flabbergasted being the lift with him, thinking he is so high up and I'm just a design jockey. I wanted to say hello but was so scared. In the midst of all of this Frank looked at me said "hello, how you doing?". He is different from any design director I've worked for. So humble, talented and so hands-on. I
Wait a min--so the McClaren symbol comes from the pupil of a fish?? Wow thats cool. The entire story behind this design is just awesome. I always loved that car but had deeper appreciation for it now! #respect
McLaren P1 is one of the best looking car in the history period. I'm so glad i'm getting to see the thoughts of someone who actually worked on the design of it
Fantastic work Mr Stephenson ... i knew i would be a fan of yours as soon as i found out you Designed Ferrari 430... Bravo ... i thought i would let you know that the beautiful creations you see in the Ocean & the World could only proceed from the Counsel & Dominion of an Intelligent & Powerful Being ... whom i call the 'Lord God '
What a legend frank I was shocked to know the X5 was one of your designs as it was the first ever luxury car came into my family and I still think it is the best looking x5 to date
Fantastic design, purposeful and dramatic. Those small fins appear on many Toyotas, usually around the base of the A pillar and also on the side of the tail lights.
Frank, that was an amazing sharing of design philosophy on every details of P1, As few years ago, on SpeedHunters video you explain through a sketch upon how athletic the cheetah was, as one of inspiration for MP4-12 design Thank you for sharing it 👍👍
Knowing what an iconic car the F1 was and how revered Gordon Murray has become, also McLaren's new Ultimate Series flagship car, must have made this a daunting task.
Double check mirrors. On the P1 road car the mirror is not attached at the A-pillar. The GTR does have the mirror attached to the A-pillar but appears to have a smooth surface.
Frank you are an amazing designer. I’m proud to say I own 2 of your creations in my collection. I have a P1 in volcano orange and a F430 Spider that’s 1 of 1 with yellow outside and full yellow interior. If you make it to Florida anytime please look me up. Great work!
Interesting how much the initial outline and profile look like the McLaren Longtail. Same shape but one carving through the air and the other carved by it.
It's fascinating to me how you bring nature, the brand, and all the engineering mechanics in a final design. My question would be: do all these aspects work together in your mind or you start with the vision of the brand? I don't know if you'll get to read this comment but can you do me a favor and put together a design that derives its basis from the F-16 Fighting Falcon? I don't know when they came up with the name for that aircraft but it was a requirement that started with light weight and agile and the Peregrine Falcon is all those and more. If you could do that in a video like a design that you'd think brings that philosophy to four wheels with design cues from an F-16, that would be fun. As a kid I was fascinated with this Aircraft because it was the most unique fighter design of its time and stood apart from all others.
McLaren's are my favorite cars. IMO they have the best in terms of super high performance but it is a supercar that you can drive everyday because McLaren has mastered the art of unbelievable handling but the suspension isn't so stiff it requires you to have back surgery afterwards. The McLaren F1 has always been my dream car which i know i will never get one cause they now are selling for over 20 million dollars. But a close second is the P1 which is the supercar that put McLaren on the way to being a serious high performance car manufacturer.
Hey Frank, do car manufacturers bring in Aerospace Engineers to design the aerodynamics of the car? I know that for race-cars aerodynamics is a top priority. Joseph Katz was one of my professors at San Diego State University, you probably know him as the designer of the F1, Indy and Nascar aerodynamic features.
I was wondering why some other cars had the vortex generator things on the mirror too and that makes sense. I think I've seen them on a new Ford Explorer of all things and the mk5 Supra?
The P1 is my all time favorite car in the world. It is just outstandingly beautiful. Unfortunately, the closest I will ever get to one is the one I own in forza 4.
After the P1 was created McLaren asked you to create the P1 GTR? I got a queston since the MP4-12C was conceived: Making a car like you do is perfection below your eyes but what do you think about those aftermarket "creations" over your designs? Of course everybody got the right to do what ever they want on what they own but you think the car is ruined?. Like for example the 720s novitec that wants to be a senna, etc. The P1 is one of the most exquisite car i've seen in my life.
I think p1 is the most beautiful McLaren and also one of the most beautiful supercars and hyper cars what a great masterpiece that you can have on your resume
It really is a big deal to design a product that defines the rest of McLaren products designs afterwards and give new identity to the brand. You are a true master at what you do.
*So basically this guy has designed pretty shitty looking cars over the years!* 😄 😄 😄 😄 F430 was meh! Nobody remembers it. P1 is remembered, but not for its looks. Definitely not for its looks! 😄 😄 😄
bujambura burundi no offence but are you in the right mind or? F430 was a masterpiece so was P1 , you need to understand that he doesn’t design whatever “he wants” but what would suit the identity of the brand with thousands of considerations. So yeah, it’s safe to say that what you said was totally irrelevant.
Starting from August 1st til August 14th - We will be auctioning each of the original sketches from this series in support of a charity close to my heart 'Harrison's Fund'. Visit www.givergy.com/charity/harrison-s-fund to get bidding. It's an amazing charity helping to find a cure for Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy . The sketches are the original features in the video AND a reworked, polished version of each sketch. Thanks
Some cars I feel look great in person but don't photograph well, do you find this or is it just me? A good example for me is the 570S, in photos the car looks small and the nose looks rather squashed but in person everything the car is a lot bigger, it has great road presence (more so than a 720S) and it is well proportioned.
The P1 is so beautiful in its organic simplicity and character as if it captured some absolute truth of nature. Whereas the Senna.... is a disgusting, incoherent eye-sore. I was appauled they decided to tarnish the name of the great Ayrton Senna with that joke of a design.
yeah you want to be deigner.. you had to study alot of bullshit... this is why i gave up creative design since it would drive me mad.. if i had to keep desgin something people had not..
one of the best looking mclearn... hope one day i would owned one...just right now i don't own carbon fiber car since it just cost too much to maintaince..
The 'How I designed...' I've been most anxious to see, I love P1's organic curves and 'shrink wrap' ethos. I actually do own a P1 myself (well, a 1/18 scale model taking pride and place alongside my McLaren F1 GTR!) .Thank you Mr Stephenson for your insightful videos, and look forward to season 2. Additionally, would be interested in your analysis of the 'Senna', a car design way more function than form, and the stunning 720s.
Remember the time back in 2014 when those first photos of the car were released (in that volcano orange with the white background). Just randomly encountered them while was on the internet, was very excited for the final release.
The P1 is my favourite modern car, period. Yourself and this car inspired me to get in to Automotive Design and the world of performance cars, something I’m relentlessly pursuing at the moment. Thanks for the great video Frank!
This is so cool! Thank you so much ! I’m really into cars I’m actually going to study transportation design at ARTCENTER and this video was so interesting thank you!
When I was younger as a kid l always started my drawings with the wheel circles and wheel base. My dad said you have to go to Art center in Pasadena to the design school. My dad attended Art center after WW2 on the GI bill of rights. I'm 62 still love drawing cars! Never got to go to Art Center.
