Several important things are not mentioned: One, the Mongol army developed a highly sophisticated system of communication during the battle (by means of differently-colored flags), two, they were probably the first pre-modern army to introduce medical corps, logistics corps, and above all, astonishing military intelligence, both tactical and strategic, three, perhaps their most successful invention, the psy-ops, or war-time propaganda. It was them who invented the blitzkrieg - one of the ablest German commanders in WWII, Rommel, was a keen student of Mongol military history, which btw is still taught in all serious military academies. It is a historical irony that the word "horde" (usually in plural), meaning disorganized, wild, armed men in large numbers, derives from the Mongolian word "orte" which translates as "battle group" - the highest level of military organization (in their case, several tumens of 10,000 fighters each).

I believe the Germans actually incorporated the Blitz by performing army maneuvers and sharing doctrine with the Soviets... the Soviets were employing Mongolian tactics over the same vast step that the Mongolians once conquered, which is crazy to me.

In modern Turkish, horde "ordu" means army and "tümen" means brigade. Curious how horde is mistranslated into English considering how organized Mongol armies were.

Just say Huns as Huns don't say Turkish* modern Turkish are Turkified Anatolians with mostly Arab and Indo European genes, more neutral term you may want to use is Turco-Mongol Confederations or Nomads of the steppe. Turkics(Not Turkish) are more similar to Mongols. Just see Kazakhstan. (Don't be biased , just see your own face in the mirror and tell me if it looks Asian or Arabic) This whole proud extremist Turkish pride is cringe.

The Mongols with brilliant leaders and generals and numerous tactics were truly great in combat. Their skills as archers, horsemen, survivors and warriors were also tremendous assets in their wars. One of the greatest lessons in history is the fact that by doing hundreds of little and big things extremely well the Mongols were well suited to survive the literal battle for survival they experienced as a competition of the fittest with numerous other people in their day. Truly a great lesson in history, battle, tactics, strategy and the nature of human beings.

I remember playing as scots and building an army consisting only pikemen and longbowmen, the problem is whenever elephants came up close my pikemen quickly routed, leaving my archers vulnerable to cavalry charge.

It took gunpowder, a Chinese resurgence, a rising Russian/pan-Slavic identity and an eclipsing Turkic identity to dispel the idea of Mongol dominance completely

The Russian strategy employed during Napoleon's Russian campaign were called the "Scythian Strategy", which was described as pulling their army further and further into Russia, straining Napoleon's supply and communication lines. Though it didn't manifest itself on the battlefield through troop movements, it was used on a macro scale against the French army, until they (the French) received a decisive blow at the battle of Borodino, which put an end to Napoleon's success. Tolstoy mentions it in quite a bit of detail War and Peace.

No one would start a fight over it during an ongoing battle but if someone took the wrong horse and that horse died in battle I can imagine that the rightful owner would have been pretty pissed. Probably wouldn't have written a report but certainly asking for compensation. Also let's not underestimate what kind of bond these men had with their animals. If you ride thousands of miles, facing death in a multitude of battles and caring for them for years I think that a lot of these men were probably felt closer to their horses than their families.

Steppe civs are usually mid-low tier but if someone feeds them and they snowball they are imbalanced because lack of civilizing elements actually let them adopt anything into their arsenal. Their base stats are ideal to take advantage of such situations. +5 archery +5 horseback riding +5 horse regeneration (small horses eat less and are hardy) +5 recovery without shelter -3 food requirements To top it off, hunting wild game on horseback +5 teamwork on horseback That is what the Mongols get for FREE. Every men can do this. Compare that to the super civilized Chinese. Try getting an average peasant to get the above skills.. it'd take 5-10 years of hardcore training, which is super expensive cause you gotta feed the guy as well, while the Mongol literally developed those skills to survive.. After that, their lack of civilization actually lets them adopt technologies from more technological advanced nations without prejudice. Once they gather enough they essentially can snowball everyone and conquer the world. The issue is of course they lack cultural identity, so usually they assimilate into the conquered people after a few generations after discovering that, hey, I'm the most powerful and this civilization shit is actually pretty nice with like, things.

Mongolian archery has three type of shooting: Charge arrow, which only most elite can do, often power rivaled heavy crossbow, and historical text said 65 steps or 80 meters, requirement to be able to shoot somebody's eye at that range; side swinging or turning charging, looping and method to avoid contact with enemy, shoot only light arrow to deceive enemy, and can have range of 300 meters, but they will shoot light and thin arrows just to create the "raining" like effect to "fog" enemy eyes. Lesser elite troops will try charging arrow without accuracy when blend with the "fog", and glance on the side of the enemy formation. Mugudai or scythian back shooting, it is also a form of "fogging" enemy; sometimes there are riders fall off the horse deliberately, to set up trip lines with their wooden pole, when combined with scythian back shooting, distracts enemy from stopping the trip line setting comrades and buy them time to escape, while enemy have to circle around trip lines.

Hi Kings and Generals, the first time the Mongol encounter war elephant was in Dai Viet (north Vietnam) in the Red River valley near Yunnan. On 17 January 1258 Subutai's son and grandson commanded three tumens, one was Mongolian, and two were Yi people , consisted 15,000 men faced the royal Vietnamese army of 20,000 and 100 elephants under king Tran Thai Tong (Tran Nhat Canh). The Mongol general Aju ordered to shoot in the elephants' feet with caused the animal stuck into panic and rampaged the Vietnamese force. The king escaped by boat, fled to a offshore island where he lived for 1 month. The Mongol captured Hanoi and found two imprisoned Mongol envoys, which one them died. The Mongol troops massacred Hanoi's inhabitants (30,000 people), burned the royal palace then sent letter noticed to the king that they have burned his palace. The Mongol then retreated to Kublai's base in Yunnan, and the Vietnamese king sent a submitting envoy to Kublai in March 1258. Source: Yuanshi

Battle of Ngasaunggyan The Yuan Chronicle reports that only 700 men defeated a Burmese army of 40,000 to 50,000 with 10,000 horses and 800 elephants. It also reports only one Mongol was killed, in trying to catch an elephant.

I like your channel and have been following for a while. Could you do a video about Hulagu khan vs Berke khan war pls? As i have seen many people believe that Ain Jalut battle halted south western Mongol invasion which is not true because it was a small war. It was Berke khan who stopped Hulagu’s invasion by declaring on him. Mamlukes defeated only 8 thousand garrisoning Mongol troops and most of them fled after losing their general Kitbuqa noyon.Hulagu khan and Berke khan fought with each other with hundreds of thousands of troops some sources claim each side had 300’000-350’000 troops.I believe there was not any power to stop Mongols unless themselves at that time.They weakened each other by fighting with each for centuries.

Mamluks defeated 20000 thousand troops from Hulagu’s own, not garrison troops, those 20k were in the sack of Baghdad, Hulagu left with 30k to support Kublai Khan in his bid for the throne against Ariq Boke who was supported by Berke, Mamluks stopped them multiple times, that’s their problem, no one told them to fight each other

Scythian shot. Unless my history is entirely flawed the Mongols had small contingents of heavy cavalry to use as shock troops, a holding force or a rally point for the archers to fall behind before repeating the tactics you represented well in this video. And they also had a minimal amount of foot soldiers. Alex the Great was one of the few who were able to out maneuver the horse archers which eventually led to the introduction of a heavy cavalry force to minimize that danger. Or I'm just wrong. This is not my major area of study.

Mongol accomplishments: Ended feudalism in China and encouraged advancement through education and merit. Improved trade and helped greatly spread ideas throughout Asia and Europe. Improved the rights of religious minorities of Jews, Christians, and Druze in the Middle East. Encouraged the Japanese to keep their country united. Proved that Asians could beat Europeans, in Europe.

The Feigned Retreat and Parthian Tactics required cavalry for their high mobility. It is harder to implement as infantry if the other side has cavalry and cavalry archers. I must say, Mongols from cavalry to archery to siege is a force that's difficult to outplay, unless the commander and ruler is weak and tactless.

@@alessandrogini5283 hard to do so. horse archer as a profession need a lot of training, the roman tried but can't produced a natural horse archer like steppe people, it essentially is 2 job in 1, an archer and a horseman and both require training and further to do both at the same time, which was not as accessible as our modern time since peasant have to work and professional are expensive to maintain and horse archer take double effort in both maintenance and training, so the roman usually hired them as mercenary instead. In steppe culture, non-noble family's child learn to ride as early as possible as well as shooting so they could guard the heard against wild animal, they have no soldier(back then Mongol don't even have a word for it i think), everyone can be in the army because the way they fight is simply their way of life, they just need training on tactic which they usually do in hunting. Unless its khan's guard or them heavy calvary, you could say that its an army of peasant on horse(hence they get destroy by professional heavy calvary of sedentary people when the latter who have malee combat training and equipment for it could catch up to them)

Tactically, there was no real counter to horse archery in the open in that period. The best answer was to hire your own steppe nomad horse archers. The best the infantry could do is to employ war wagons as cover, something they would do to good effect with gunpowder weapons later on.

They were the 'Blockchain Army' before it all, mastering and benefiting from a decentralized sourcing, data gathering, processing and output (Conquest) mechanisms. Pretty impressive, predating the term and theory of 'blockchain', 'handling and transferring bigger entities (data, armies, supplies, opponents' forces, ...) as packages' by many centuries.
