And i was in the studio at that time and before the show a Austrian journalist from a programme there asked me things about it. And what made it later more "special" that my own fiancé passed away because of a kidneydisease. I am a donor since 2014, and in 2018 i had got all the tests if i could have given a kidney to her. And the day that they gave green light for that, was the day that she said goodbye and she wanted to die at her sisters place. She had also Alzheimer because of that kidneydisease. But im thankfull for the years that we were together. She will be my biggest love whatever will happen further in live

Back then, i worked by BNN ( internet department / IT ), even we had no clue. Only a certain group knew about the actual outcome, but had to keep their mouths shut for obvious reasons ( i think they even had to sign a contract for that). We all watched the show, and i remember it like it was yesterday, when the final word came out, we all cheered extremely loud. The amount of positive reactions that we got was amazing. It was the best tv moment in history. Even on this day, Bart is still a legend that lives on forever.

I like him mentioning Barts’ sister and the Bart de Graaf foundation. They are both incredible. Miriam is just lovely and It is beautiful how she keeps Barts’ spirit alive. A small, minor addition: The foundation isn’t only for youngsters with physical disabilities. Also chronic illnesses. I was lucky enough to go through their very tough selection process in 2019 and start my own business with the help of this foundation. Any way possible they had my back. It gave me a very rare and beautiful opportunity.

I remembered this as if it was yesterday. I was disgusted at first, but they sure knew how to draw attention to a huge issue. I was about 26 years old and never gave becoming a donor much thought, but when I read about the hoax/message in the news, I became a donor that same day. I am still ashamed this show had to remind me that with such little effort, you could potentially have a huge impact on a person and his or hers family and friends. One thing I am pretty sure about: Bart would have loved this stunt!

Bart was amazing, had the pleasure to meet him once and he was as "bart" irl as he was on TV. He actually became famous first as the face of Lu Bastogne commercials (if you don't know the brand, it is a cookie brand) with the catchphrase "Zeg maar nee, dan krijg je er twee... toegevallig" which translates to "if you say no, you get two... acutallylly" (not a typo) The sad thing about all of this is that we are now back at the levels of donors as we were when this show aired... it solved nothing. You know what that means right? people didn't take the time to fill out the donor form, but they sure made time to opt out.
@petermaardananders6803

There was an organ donor law before this show was broadcast and it helped to raise awareness for organ donation. Bart was a very special person, he dared to go where most would not have dared to go. BNN did the right thing, and yes most will argue it was unethical but they then missed the point of spreading awareness of the importance of organ donation. Since then the laws for organ donation have changed somewhat, atm it is an opt-out system. This means everyone is a possible organ donator after death unless you have opted out of that, there still are some exceptions to that but those are difficult to explain.

This was the best publicity stunt ever, I remember it well. Not only the Dutch press talked about it for weeks, even the international press did. BNN set this up so brilliantly. They asked themselves what Bart would have done and this was the perfect answer. When the law finally changed from opt-in to opt- out, it was due to one vote only. I’m quite sure Bart was looking down smiling that day.

We have this saying if something is really good "you can wake me in the middle of the night for that". Bart interviewed a lot of famous Dutch people and he would casually ask them what it was you could wake them up for in the middle of the night. Then a year or so later he would go there at 3-4 AM with whatever they said. Some were fun reactions, others were pissed off at him. :D Bart had brilliant shows.

Regarding your question at the end of the video. It's very easy to opt out if you want to. When you become 18 years old, you get a letter from the gouvernment. It explains that you automatically became a donor and also the importance of it. It also contains a form, with about four options. I forgot the exact phrasing, but it was something along the lines of: Opt in, opt in under specific circumstances, let your family decide or opt out. The form could be mailed back free of charge. If no form was received within a certain time period, they would assume you're in. And of course they would confirm your choice, to prevent misscommunication. You can also change your decission any time you want (digitally as well). Hope this answer your question.

I became a donor at the age of 12 after having lost both my grandmother and aunt due to kidney failure. Although I wasn't of age yet, so I doubt if it was even legal, I still filled in a donor codicil. And, though not necessary under the current law, I still carry that worn, nowadays barely readable, codicil in my wallet. I remember very well how shocked and appalled I was when first hearing about the show. But soon, I realised that Bart would never have agreed with this show being for real and that his coworkers, who had known him very well, also wouldn't. It just hád to be a publicity stunt, a cry out to the people and the government(s) to get their attention to the issue. And boy, did it work! Everybody talked about it, and inevitably also thought about it. I strongly believe that this show has woken up many people and contributed to getting the issue of donorship on the political agenda. And though it has taken many years of talk and debate in this consensus driven country, to get the opt-out donor law passed, I'm grateful it eventually did.

Bart de Graaf was such a funny person, as a kid I rememered we'd gather around the television and laugh at whatever he did. His BNN channel aswell.. it was amazing! Absolutely effective. You see how you immediately become part of the discussion about an issue that we, at least most of us, feel unfomortable about. And when you don't want to be anything done than you need to be sure there is no discussion. BNN wanted to intensive the discussion about donating organs. After all, when most of us are in such situations we all wish there is a suitable donor available. The downside of the methode BNN had taken is that it's hard to repeat it for any other or same subject. But it was certainly effective Oooh btw.... This also is a proof that society benefits by having a tax payed broadcaster like the Dutch public television or international more famous the BBC. In a 100% commercial setting you will never be able to organize something like this. Because advertisers aren't much interested in sensitive matters. Public television can bring attention to matters that are important though uncomfortable. When you have only commercial outlets than you are creating a media landscape that will be disneyfised or worse... sugarcoated (aka beep America's media landscape that is beep beep terrible exhausting to consume)

I think you should have the following choice when you're 18: Do you want to be a donor recipient? Yes. Therefore you are a donor. And your family can't override your decision.

This was such a historical hoax. All the people expressing their “moral issues” were suddenly completely silenced. I’m sure this has contributed in a big way to changing our system from opt in to opt out. The way that BNN managed this was such an incredible way to remember Bart and confront people with reality. It may have taken 10 years but it sure contributed to a change of mind of the Dutch.

Because of that show finally a national discussion broke out register as a donor. Since a couple of years we have a law that you are automatically a donor from the age of 18 unless you say you don't want to. If you turn 18 you get a form. If you don't want to be a donor you fill in the form and send it back This all thanks to the show.

Bart was really innovative but sometimes honestly a bit much. Which comes with the territory. When I’ve heard about this show, I almost threw up. 🤮 We did not see the show. I just couldn’t. While it was a hoax and shocking, in the aftermath it was also very informative. Discussing donating, we became more aware of our choices. At that time, having some medical issues, I found out that you can choose what you want to donate after death and what not. Also that you can change your application as you grow older. I immediately registered as a donor. Thanks to BNN for not only waking me/us up, but also our politicians.

It's always sad to see politicians refusing to improve the situation till they get embarrassed internationally by someone who shows current course isn't right. Sure this show was a hoax and might not have a permanent impact (or changes the way things go overnight) but it did give that push needed to get where we finally got. every country should use the opt-out method for donating, opting out still is a choice, but with the opt-out system at least you help people if you forgot to or had no time to register. We hear/read at least 50k donors registered after the show in NL, what was the impact beyond the borders? Afterall international news was all over it...

En wat boeit het hoe je in de kist ligt? Je bent te dood om er bij stil te staan op dat moment.
