Hi Beautiful People,
I invited my husband to have a chit chat with me regarding our marriage and how it has changed over the years. We've been in a relationship for 10 years and have been married almost 5 years. In this video we share our experiences being married in the Netherlands and how we've managed to stay together at different phases of our lives.
I hope you learn a few things and at least enjoy our weird sense of humour 😄😄.

Big respect and kudos to both of you but especially to your husband. . I don’t know anything about Nigerian culture, but I think here in Europe there are not that many man that would be willing to change their life to give this career opportunity to their wife. His hard work to learn Dutch to build up his own life while supporting you makes him and you gems among the expat community.

Gonna be blunt about this: Only YOU can mess up your relationship. Don't blame it on anyone else. If moving to another culture/society has negative impact on you, it's YOU that failed at adapting to the new environment. It's as simple as that. That's really all.

I’m looking to move to the Netherlands for my PhD, I’ve been sending In applications. If I’m being honest, your videos has to be one(s) of the many that has convinced me to make a good pick in Europe. Even though every country has its down sides, my spirit feels drawn to this place more. Recently, I found out we don’t have the embassy in Nigeria and I’d have to go to Cotonou but I won’t let that discourage me yet. Funny thing, I’ve also been learning Dutch. I know Vrouwen, Mannen, Boterham, Meijse, Krant, and so much more. Thank youuuuu. Hoping to send in a goodnews soon!

My father was not open about finances with my mother. As an immigrant, she could not work here in her field of work, as her diploma was not recognised here. She was depending on him. I think this (especially him not being open about it) caused a lot of strain in their marriage. Also he mismanaged his finances. My mother was much better at that. But he did not include her in major decisions. Not good.

Financial transparency within a marriage is definitely the norm in the Netherlands. In fact, keeping things from each other on the money front is often seen as a risk for financial abuse. Within reason of course... The exception is often elderly couples where one of the partners has assumed control of the finances and the other partner hasn't paid attention to them for decades.

I once had this discussion on finance with some of my folks (both gender), and 90percent disagrees with financial transparency in marriage. The debate is usually one sided- women should be open while the men can keep theirs a secret. Well, I agree 100percent with your husband, financial transparency should be encouraged in marriage but with exceptions (I still believe understanding your partner's maturity in finance management is key. If you marry a partner who likes to spend 80 percent of your savings, then the other person will be justified for keeping his/her income a secret). Nonetheless, I'm happy your marriage is working well. Well done 👏
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
Thank you Irene for your comment. I would argue that in my case men have more willing to share while the women have felt that their money is theirs and only theirs. Lol. I think it shows how different our society and peoples perception can be. I do agree that in some cases, transparency may not work especially if one spouse has a spending issue or is not willing to share 👌🏾

I have Been living in The Netherlands for about a year moved from Germany and I am from Nigeria. I just wanna say this Title is misleading, I have lived in a several EU countries and to me the Netherlands is the most balanced. Keep in mind if you live in any big cities around the world the lifestyle is very similar. The title is misleading
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
Hi, I think the aim of the video was to show how we’ve managed to find a balance in our marriage. The title is from the question I asked my husband in the video hence why it has a question mark. I asked him if the Netherlands ruined our marriage as the dynamics of our marriage has changed since we moved from Nigeria. I agree that the Netherlands is a beautiful country with policies that help families but the dynamics of marriage in the Nigeria is very very different from what you have in the Netherlands hence why we had to have this conversation. Thanks for your comment.
@E.M.Favour
@E.M.Favour Год назад
@@josphineogugua I get that. Like I said the tittle is misleading. What your talking about is how The Netherlands affect your marriage, your Title is how The Netherlands almost ruin our marriage. These are two different statements and your Tittle of the videos doesn’t portray what your saying.

Dutch people talk only within the household about financial stuff or private matters within that circle. Transparancy to someone else not in the family is putting noses into places that dont matter. Dutch people do not like to show off how much or how little they have. Its a very sad trait if people do. Money doesnt define anything and its only required to pay the needs. Beyond that its nobody their business. after all nobody wants eachother to define another by their wallet. so we dont even approach that topic. we avoid it. Hopes it clears it up.
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
Yes it clears it up. Thanks for sharing😊
@dicknr1
@dicknr1 Год назад
Men and women have their own traits indeed. Men do not want to marry another man. In that way women and men are not equal body and mentally wise. Men have less emotional influence to endure. and have more of a thing affiliation over a people affiliation. Women are more emotionally connected to situations, women are more people and less thing persons. Which is why men choose often technical or stem work, where women tend to choose more social work. Biologically we are not the same. Just by rights we're the same. but even between men no man is the same, every man that exists has only 1 of them, same for women. So being equal in reality is impossible, if we were nobody would be unique or have its own talents. But the most interesting comes from when you combine the 2. Men and women generally are attracted to the opposite traits. A dominant guy doesnt want a dominant girl, and a feminine woman doesnt want a feminine man so to say. Men tend to be less agreeable women tend to be more agreeable. When you combine the both of those, you get a certain balance. where the development of the family is depending on every source to do their part. When a family does this right, you find respect and long term love. Which leads to success for all parties. Equal or not, nobody is perfect, so having a someone to rely on who has other qualities but treats you like they want to be treated themselves, with love. then you will have a successful life, regardless of the ups and downs. So equality or not, its not much of a matter. even if we're not equal in qualities as a human but equal in rights as a human. We still need eachother to fill in the void of our weaknesses. Real success in equality isnt to normalize everything, women can do a better job on average with kids that are crying and cant talk. Men tend to sacrifice themselves to protect their loved ones. These qualities dont need equality, because equality isnt sharing the same burden. Equality is making sure that you fix the weaknesses you can do while someone else does your weaknesses. And together those are equal strengths.

I think african women according to many studies and just from anyone who can honestly observe african society would agree that a lot african women are already the main breadwinners in their households or single parent households...The men in many african countries dont contribute to providing or in the house🤷🏽‍♀️ so i dont think the Netherlands can really ruin your marriage
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
That’s debatable though😁 but I get where you are coming from especially in our Nigerian homes today. Anyway I agree culture alone isn’t what’s ruining marriages, I think individual factors and willingness to stay in marriage matter a lot🤓
