Salary caps evens the playground between big and small market teams. But it also screws teams with good front offices, scouting teams and coaching staff. You scouted that 6th round player and developed him into an star, just for another team with more cap space to enjoy his prime. Still think there should be some kind of discount against the cap for players drafted by the team
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
I wouldn’t say it screws them, the teams with good front offices are the only ones who will have sustained success. If lesser teams get better by giving expensive contracts to other teams players, they will always have more variance year to year. Sustained success is the most dominant factor in competing for a Super Bowl

What happens when a player get's traded? Is the guaranteed money due immediately or will it still be paid over the years. What happens when a player decides to retire?
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
Guaranteed money will still be paid per the same schedule, by the new team. Traded players cause the same type of proration effects as a cut player for old team though, and same with retirement. No salary needs to be paid in the event of retirement however.

If a team has negative cap, does that mean they can’t sign anyone during the off-season?
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
If they are “negative” it just means they have to fix their cap before the new league year starts in March. But yes they probably will not really be able to sign many new players.
@muhammadsidibe2523
@muhammadsidibe2523 3 года назад
so the reason you cant trade even contracts in NFL like you can do in NBA is because of the signing bonus ?
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
It depends on exactly what you mean but basically yes. If you want to give an example of players I can say yes or no. Any prorated type of bonus will effect the cap in later years, so even players with identical contracts in every way but one signed a year later would effect the cap differently if traded straight up.
@muhammadsidibe2523
@muhammadsidibe2523 3 года назад
@@DefiantTakesFootball ok so i am an eagles fan. As you know carson wentz just signed a massive contract last year and this year he’s on a outs with the team I think he should get traded to the Colts. But when I’m listening to Undisputed and First Take they’re always talking about dead money. And the massive cap hit the eagles will take . How can they trade him and not deal with penalties?
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
The Wentz situation deserves its own video. Wentz has both the signing bonus and guaranteed salary. Salary would transfer to the new team if traded, or stick to the eagles if cut. Signing bonus sticks with eagles no matter what. The money is already paid so don’t think of it as a penalty. There is no way to lower it, but there is a way to spread it out over 2 years instead of 1.
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
If the Eagles trade Wentz before June 1, 2021, all of the signing bonus applies to 2021 cap. If they trade him after June 1, 2021, part of the signing bonus is on the 2021 cap and part is on the 2022 cap.

*QUESTION* Why doesnt a coaches salary count against the cap? See Jon Grudens 100M.
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
The salary cap is directly tied to the legal agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association. The NFLPA would never agree to have part of their allocated money go towards coaches. Also, each team really only pays 1 Coach a substantial amount of money, so they can all afford that without really effecting any equality in competition

I want guys to get paid all there money but something about the dead cap don’t make sense if you trade a guy. Like this Goff/ Stanford trade. Both teams have dead cap as a result. Why is it 20m or what ever when your swapping contracts. Shouldn’t it just be the difference between the to?

Thanks for the vid. Helpful to understand dead cap. People often refer to it as teams paying players to not play for them which confused me, but watching this, its just money they've already paid in signing bonus.
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
Yes that’s mostly the case. It is possible it could refer to a guaranteed salary that still has to be paid even after a player is released but it almost always is the bonus as you said

@@DefiantTakesFootball didn't think of that. Would the new team not pick up future guaranteed money? Seems like a good trade for the colts regardless.

If it is a trade yes, if it was a release, the old team is stuck with it. Offsets can come into play in certain situations though. That’s something I should do a video on at some point.

What happens if a player is traded Does his guaranteed money transfer to his new team Also what happens with the dead money if a player retires Does it still count? So for example brees would have a 22 mil dead cap hit if he retired today
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
If a player is traded, all guarantees transfer to the new team. Dead Cap Rules: -Traded: Prorated money is dead cap, any guarantees transfer to new team. -Released: Prorated money and any guarantees are dead cap. -Retired: Prorated money is dead cap, any guarantees are usually forfeited by the retiring player.

They should make the salary cap $200 million each year, just to keep it simple 🏈
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 2 года назад
Yeah the only issue with that is the players are entitled to a percentage of the overall NFL earnings, so the owners would be keeping money that is rightfully the players’ if the cap doesn’t progressively increase as the revenue does

I totally forgot to take into account the player benefits. I kept going like the NFL had 15.2 billion in revenue but all team’s salary cap added together is only 6.3 that’s not 47 percent.

I am still confused on cap space so lets say you have $26 million cap space left and you sign a player to a 3 year 30 million dollar contract, one year 10 million dollars does that mean it would take 10 million dollars off the cap space?
@jimmychen253
@jimmychen253 3 года назад
Its seems low but nfl you can sign players for less.
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
No if you sign a player for 3 years $30 million you can assign the cap hits in many different ways. You could do $10 mil/$10 mil/$10 mil or $1 mil/$2 mil/$27 mil or $11 mil/$11 mil/$8 mil, whatever you want basically. It all depends on the types of payments you make and when you make them.

Why do they force teams to use 90% of capspace every 3 years?
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
A couple reasons... 1st, to ensure the players are getting most of their share of the profits according to the CBA. 2nd, because the NFL shares a lot of it's profits among franchises, and they want to ensure that the brand is protected and maintains quality across all teams. They don't want any team to just coast and not spend any. money.

Quick question, what happens if a team cannot reach the 90% 3 yearly salary cap minimum spend? Does it never happen because of the money involved in the NFL? What punishments are there for not meeting the spending threshold?
@DefiantTakesFootball
@DefiantTakesFootball 3 года назад
Any team can do it, it’s based on a percentage of the overall profits so it can never be cost prohibitive for a team to accomplish by nature. There is no real punishment in fact, because all that happens is the team is forced to pay the difference to its players which is distributed according to the NFL Players Association. But it’s never actually happened.
