The speed that the manure is fed into the beater determines how heavy it is applied to the field. This intricate right side mechanism works perfect, now that is is straightened out again. It was a bit of a puzzle, but is working like new. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles is pretty fun. Thanks for coming along!
Spring for mugs, tee-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies.

You just gotta admire the old mechanical engineering that went into this spreader and to think it all started with somebody saying " there's got to be a better way to spread poo " Lovin every minute of it Dave.

You said it! By trade I'm a computer engineer, but I clean and repair old pocket watches as a hobby, so I have some concept of gears and sprockets and ratchets. But I'll tell you what: this mechanism makes me cross-eyed. Whoever designed this thing, way back in the long ago and far away, he was a better engineer than I'll ever be. And props to Dave for figuring it all out and getting it working again!

The mechanism on my new holland manure spreader built in the 80s isn't much different
@BrooksMoses
@BrooksMoses 3 месяца назад
Paper, pencil, slide rules (maybe), and probably a lot of scrap wood and trial and error -- and parts from older simpler machines. Also remember that blacksmithing and sandcasting were the "rapid prototyping" of the day, and just as good at doing one-off parts as a 3D printer is. I would expect most of this mechanism was designed about the same way Dave designed the pitman arm, just a lot more tinkering until it all worked. Also if you look at it, this looks like it could all (mostly) have been designed one piece at a time -- a lot like Dave assembled it. You start with the rear axle; that's simple. And then you want to have it turn the beater, which needs a gear reduction, so you design a big gear and a little gear. Then you want to disengage it, so you add a dog clutch. Then a chain and sprockets to get the motion up to the beater. And so on, each piece connects to the last but the mechanism is spread out across the back of the spreader so that there's room for each step to not have to be designed to work around the previous steps too much. Not like a watch that has to fit into tight quarters so everything has to fit together. Not to take anything away from their engineering skills! Knowing how to start so that designing something like that is just a bunch of simple steps rather than a complicated mess is definitely a skill! But it's important to remember that it's not magic. They had techniques for that, a lot like we have techniques to make writing complicated software easier like writing unit tests and breaking code down into separate functions.

Best build yet for me to watch. Woodworking, metalworking, mechanical, puzzle solving, etc. I know this machine is simple compared to some of the machines build around Circa 1900-1930, but it still fascinates me how well they thought through the mechanics to make and assemble the castings with tolerances that mesh so well. Thanks.

That bed gear is probably quite heavy when the wagon is fully loaded. So that puts a lot of resistance force on the pitman as it pushes the palls to turn the gear. Metal on metal would mean an expensive replacement as the pitman wore out the pitman mounting shaft on the casting and the holes on the pitman. A wooden pitman is cheap and easy to replace and doesn't damage the cast iron mechanism.

Same here. Why a wooden pitman arm? Much if not all parts of the mechanism are cast iron, no? Another comment suggested perhaps a wooden pitman may be sacrificial, that in the case of things getting all gummed-up and jammed, the pitman might break to prevent other parts from breaking. For the operator, replacing a relatively simple wooden pitman would be much easier than replacing toothed gears or other cast iron parts. Thanks for the fascinating videos and Indepth preservation of the history here.
