I avoid “buying pink” as much as possible, whether it’s personal care items, clothing and shoes. I actually like the men’s slippers and athletic shoes because they’re a bit more roomy, and men’s outdoor jackets have more actual pockets, and are made with better materials.

@@kuntamdc - That’s one of the things you have to be aware of. Sometimes, you may think that your purchase supports breast cancer awareness and research, but it all depends on the organization which is participating in the “buy pink” campaign, and just how much of the profits from “buying pink” products are actually going towards breast cancer awareness and research.

In tight jeans pockets doesn't make much practical sense regardless. Im a boy but wore skinny fit through all last decade, and I never leave the house without some kind of shoulder/crossbody bag, because there is just nowhere to put the phone(it barely fits and wants to jump out all the time), all the keys, cards and passports without badly bending them, etc.

In 1964 my local People's Drugstore began selling Noxema's new face cream for women. The jar looked the same as my dad's Noxema shaving cream. I was an inquisitive thirteen years of age so I compared the ingredients. They were the same except for the dye that made the shaving cream pink. I took the two jars to the pharmacist and asked him what the difference was between the two. He read the labels and said, "thirty-two cents". That's when I learned about the economics of gender inequality.

@@TwoDogsBigYard That's exactly how MASS production works. If you produce in mass you have an abundant supply. If there is no demand for your abundant supply, then you have to lower the price until someone is willing to buy it at that amount. If you never find that price, you go out of business and this is how you fail at being an entrepreneur. This isn't how exclusive production works, however. BUT to be an exclusive production company (AKA luxury production) you typically need a strong brand name behind it... like Ferrari, or Rolex. That, or have an obscenely desired product right off the bat in terms of quality and value.

Yeah, when it comes to cars I only know basics so I typically ask the mechanic to explain to my dad since he has lifelong experience. That really helps. And for car shopping my mom is actually the best to bring along. I bought a new car in Nov 2020. I'd already narrowed down the exact car and model I wanted after months of research (including a spreadsheet). When I went alone I was treated like I was just born yesterday. Two separate dealerships tried to double charge me for protective coating on fabric/paint by selling it separately, and then part of a 3-year service package. They also pretended to discount certain things in one part of the itemized sheet then added "transit charges" or other things that removed the discounts. You have to be really detailed when car shopping these days! Though the funny part is the dealership I ended up buying from had a finance guy who was so full of himself he accidentally discounted $3k. I remember being really surprised by the total since it perfectly matched what the sales person told me in text (she specifically said after tax title and license). I knew there were two discounts - dealer and manufacturer - so I just asked the guy to double check everything and tell me the total. It was exactly what I understood myself. So I signed and drove home with the car. A day later, the finance guy told me the section I'd asked about had a "mistake" (he couldn't tell me where on the contract when I asked), and asked me to come "re-contract." I told him I wouldn't be paying any more money unless he could tell me where the contract said I owed any. I then send a screenshot showing the sales person offering the exact price I paid. A few days lapsed and I got an email apology. I'm assuming he got in trouble for not adding in some BS fees to charge me extra. Whoops. I somehow tricked them into being honest and following through on a promise?!

When negotiations the cost of a car, the sales people are more likely to want to give men a better deal so they will negotiate to lower prices for men. So women end up paying more for the car. Then men go around bragging that they are just better at negotiating. The same but opposite is true for negotiating for salaries and raises. The boss is more likely to want to pay men higher, they emphasize with men for needing to support themselves and their families, but they don’t believe that women need to support themselves or their families. So women get offered less salary and less raises. If women fight harder to negotiate for fair wages or raises, she is seen as problematic, which makes the boss even less likely to want to pay her what she is worth. And once again men go around thinking it’s because they are better at negotiating, or better at their jobs then women, when the truth is, more was just handed over to men. Women aren’t going to get it even when they fight hard for it. It’s like playing a home town football game where the refs have decided before hand they will make every call they can in favor of the home team. It makes the win easy for the home team and impossible for the visiting team.

Factually the statement is incorrect about women shaving because of other women. Women were shamed into shaving their armpits during the roaring twenties when the dress sleeves were shortened. They didn’t have to shave their legs because of stockings. However, during WW2 stockings were needed for the war effort. So women were encouraged to donate their hosiery for the effort, and were told to shave their legs if they wanted to have that smooth appearance. Women also drew lines down the backs of their legs to simulate the stockings seam. And it’s been that way ever since.

I worked in a dry cleaner's when I was in high school. The reason women's pricing tends to be higher is that you have to clean certain types of fabrics and materials differently, ie. pearl buttons or silk, or if there are details like bows or patches that can't be removed that are a different fabric than the main material (embroidery thread especially can bleed if not treated carefully). But if you buy a man's (or boy's) button-down and have it tailored to you it'll be the same price to clean as a traditional man's sized button-down, since the cleaning process is the same. Just a tip for anyone looking to save on their dry-cleaning bill!

In fact, this buissnes guy is right. Designing an fabricating products just for woman make them cost more, not because of sexism, but because of developement cost. Its like a "special edition" of an existing product. Also, woman coud buy men products, but men cannot buy woman products. Its basic buissnes, not the "patriarchy". Also, woman haircuts are more compicated an take more time to do, so of corse they are more expensive. And also, when you work at an exclusive workplace, EVERYONE has to take time to dress properly. This has nothing to do with "high beauty standarts". In total, woman are more willing to pay mor for beauty than men, so they make woman beauty products more expensive. Its that simple. And how do you imagine this "patriarchy", this conspiacy of all men against women works? That makes absolutly no sense. Leting a woman hop trough a supermarket dosen't make this "problem" a real thing. But hey, its against men, so its hip, woke and modern.

As for "taking time to dress properly" for work, a very quick scan of the comments above and below reveal discussions of how men's clothes are stitched better, use better quality materials, and last longer, all for a cheaper price. How is it reasonable to expect women to pay more for less quality? the only reason this argument doesn't make sense to you is because you refuse to open your eyes to the true costs of being a woman. To put it simply, it's not that men discriminate women or the opposite, but there are companies and services act in a way that makes ladies believe that men discriminate them and vice versa. For example, this case of price differences for same service it should be addressed as companies discrimination and not men discrimination against women or women against men. We just need to be careful because this is starting to go do far to the extent both genders started hating and fighting each other instead of respecting and supporting each other. I hope people reflect on what's write and wrong and make a difference between getting their rights and generalization or accusing a group of people of what some specific ones do. Thank you.

Same with shampoo, soap, clothing, shoes, etc. We all know about the stereotpye men will wear the same clothes forever even when it's full of holes and covered in stains. These items are just scratching the surface on the pink tax. The expectations of women's appearance and periods are a massive pink tax. Periods, BTW, are not medically necessary. But, all news or reporting on the matter will be deleted. Just ask your female doctors why monthly periods are necessary. Men can have 5 suits and 10 ties and 2 pairs of shoes for their entire work wardrobe and no one says a word about it. But if women, particularly women in advertising wore the same outfit in the same month, they would get chastised. Then there are the seasons. Women's clothes are made for each season while men's clothes (workwear) are made for 4 seasons. Then there's the beauty regiment. From hair to waxing to nails to Botox and plastic surgery - the cost for women to look "nice," is astronomical. But men can look nasty at the office and they will not be ostracised, critiqued, held back from promotions, or even terminated because of their looks. But women are often called to the HR Dept. to address co-worker's issues with their appearance or scents. The pink tax is pervasive so males and females need to actively change their behavior on a daily basis to bring forth equity.

The pink razors have Lavender scented handles and lanolin and vitamin E in the moisture strips the blue razors do not. Those are extra features you have to pay for. @@ksc743 Very much not true. Also, there are plenty of places that charge a flat fee for a haircut. It wasn't until I was 17 that I got my first haircut at anywhere other the greatclips, because everyone in my family would just go to greatclips. We would save coupons from the mail, and it was a $6.95 haircut for me, or my sister, or my dad, or my mom, regardless of gender or hair length/type/thickness. Now, I pay significantly more than any of the women in my life because I have a special colour, so I go in every 6-8 weeks for a trim, bleach, and re-dye. The "pink tax" exist because people are willing to pay for products that only appeal to woman, I am not an expert or anything but if you don't wanna pay this "tax" then buy a guy's product and when brands notice that no one is buying their products are not profitable, they will adjust the prices. Its all about demand and if the people are willing to pay also let's not forget that brands know that women control the spending and that is why every store in the world have more items targeted at women instead of men.

@@jane.elliot5782 it's not discrimination against women. It's simply the market determining the optimal price point for highest profit. They do that with every single product in the store. The only solution is for the customer to not buy overpriced items. They would do the same for men's products, but men are less picky than women so you can't charge too much, otherwise the man will just switch to a cheap generic product.

The Pink tax isn't just for items that could be substituted such as shampoo, deodorant etc. There are actual items taxed (and sometimes heavily on top of outrageous prices) that only women use such as tampons and pads, bras and even underwear. Some things can be switched but the use has to also be considered. Men's razors were designed for faces so they tend to be sharper and harsher on the skin and hair of the legs, especially knees. Men's clothes often don't fit well on curvier women even if they find a same matching size, as men often have their weight in the belly region and women in their hips and thighs. Men's pants often don't consider that sort of adjustment in design that women's pants would. Then there is the pocket thing. Not all women carry purses. My gf carries a wallet because carrying all the extra weight from her old purse actually started damaging her knees. Clothes with actual pockets are hard for her find. Don't even get her started on dresses. So it's possible for most to make substitutions, in some things there really isn't any way to.

@@user232349 Dove has had a few "man" deodorants. Having an expensive male counter part for traditionally female brands is something that's being attempted.
