The latest strike by Lufthansa's ground staff in Germany marks the fourth major strike in the country within a few weeks. This series of strikes has not only disrupted travel across Germany but has also highlighted deeper issues within the country's economy, including rising inflation, a tight labor market, and the potential for another year of recession. Carsten Brzeski, chief economist at ING, joins DW Business to discuss how these strikes reflect the overall mood in the country, the impact on the economy, and the reasons behind the increasing frequency of industrial actions.

I sense this will be a common occurrence worldwide. You cannot expect to have a society where 85% of the people are struggling to maintain the basics, 10% live comfortably and the top 5% live an incredible life at the expense of the bottom 85%.

It hasn't been like for all of human history. Just the past 15 years. It goes by percentages. In the 90s and early 2000s you wouldn't say the same thing. There is too much speculation going on from top to bottom. The top getting most of rewards and the bottom kids playing and dreaming of being stockbrokers@@KSfreaky

I am a small business owner and inflation make my business down because the cost of business is rising up while consumer confidence is still the same or even dropping. DW interviews a bourgeois economist to tell us how "unrealistic" the workers are in demanding livable wages. Rank-and-file workers and union reps are glaringly absent from this "discussion." And I love the look of terror on the interviewer's face throughout.
@Ryanowning
@Ryanowning 3 месяца назад
When you chart the math it makes sense why he says it's unrealistic. Capital is hyper inflated despite the comparatively low wages, but this is because of not enough competition. Capital would deflate significantly if we broke up all of the major companies and gutted the zombie companies as well as killing off the scam companies whom are consuming all investment with only pyramid scheme returns. If we fail to break up major companies then our economy is going to collapse in it's entirety and the upper rich will not survive. It's this final problem that the rich aren't hearing correctly, they rightly are trying to defend themselves, but see the demands as threats when, in reality, it's possible for their cooperation to benefit them. They just can't see how losing something works out for them in the long run despite carrying that same argument for the poor. It's perhaps because of their dismissal for the needs of the poor that leads them to dishonesty and thus unfortunately their disconnect. If we're going to recover we cannot be disconnected. The rich need to be brought back into the fold. They need to see the investment opportunity in the poor.

@NullTypeError

That's not possible with current Germany's economic model. If you will pay more, export will cost more and Germany lose concurrency with other countries. So Germany need to keep wages low to be competitive. Or finally change economic model to something more realistic.

The strike comittees maybe? We can turn it around and ask that by what right the government tells to the workers, that they actually have to work to maintain that so called acceptable level of service. If they decide to go all in, and refuse to work, thats their choice, if the state tells, that they can only reduce their output, that means, they also have to put their leverage against the employer.@@NullTypeError

I think German trade unions should reach out to immigrant workers more often. I worked 5 yrs in German in Lebensmittel industry, always as an outsourced worst paid worker (through Leihfirmen). I had had experience in unionizing, I speak 3 languages and even contacted organizations like faire Mobilitat to advise me on one case when the contractor didn't pay for overtime and they ignored me, there was no presence of unions at factories, no leaflets left at canteens or posters on boards. 6:53 in 2009 when I made $50k, I had a house, car and social life - but I lived paycheck to paycheck. I had credit cards and that doesn’t count in America if you have personal debt. They make you default and they put a lean on your house if you have one. Your car can’t be too nice but inflation my $5k car cost $15k. Insurance is going up a lot with housing and utilities in addition to food.

@brojo355

It´s hardly imploding, its more about a general change in our employment-market. Since we are short-staffed in certain areas (especially those, who are pretty low paid for their work efforts), the leverage for this Jobgroups is changing rapitly. So their Unions can and are asking for more and more wages, free days, other compensations etc. . And most of them are right, with their demands imo. The market makes the price... And as long the Job-Market wont change, this will get more and more. The Protest of the farmers and other self-employers are just paralell and another problem, which needs to be adressed. But all in all, they are not related.

Implementing automation through the use of robots requires a technical team or skilled laborers, which can be more costly than traditional labor, especially during a pandemic. Technical and trained labor is often in short supply and can command higher wages. Therefore, it's important to carefully consider the costs and benefits of automation versus traditional labor when making decisions about implementing new technology.
