One of John’s greatest fears is having a catheter and then some spiders getting in said catheter.

This was the best video I have ever seen on playing guitar. Started playing a few months ago and didnt know where to go beyond the CAGED stuff. Took me a few days but can now rip down this entire scale. Thank you for making this, and all your other videos.

I have never appreciated the pentatonic scale since these vides, JC. I know EC is the king of it. But these exercises have opened up a ton tonally and on the fretboard that I didn't have before.

Thanks for sharing, this is very userful. Something clicked on my mind; I already know how the other positions (I, ii, iii, IV, V vi) are just modes of each scale, but this video connects some dots that are missing on the back of my head.

Wow, I've been taking Eric Haugen's CAGED course on Trufire and just got done and this is an awesome supplement. I feel like I'm 🤏 close to a major breakthrough in my understanding of the fretboard. Thank you so much for this, this is one of the most insightful, concise ways I've heard this explained on the RU-vids or anywhere else. Subscribed : )

I recall learning pentatonic in the early 70s and that’s where we all hung out for years.. ffwd years later and I figured out diatonic and that really open things up for me. Even thought there are 2 more notes in the scale, I can actually move, position and play diatonic patterns faster than pentatonic? And of course, easy to mix both tonics as desired. Wish I could grasp legato!?!?

Hey @johnnathancordy, lovely playing, as always. Let me ask you a question: do the pickups on those beautiful stratocaster guitars you use have noise cancellation or they are regular single coils? I've noticed that you use a lot of gain on your lead tones, but at the same time you can hear very little noise or hum (either you manage it or you hide it very well!). Thanks in advance for your answer!

It’s funny that mostly everyone starts with them pentatonics, and it’s now after i am old and decrepit i am finally taking a dive into them, so thanks JNC! Btw, are those chimey cleans available for the Helix?

Super helpful video but question. When you’re soloing using the pentatonic scale, do you stay in the key of the song or change the scale depending on the chord for example if a song is in C and the chord progression is C-G-Am-F do you play the pentatonic of each chord or just chill in the C major pentatonic?
@ghosthandle180
@ghosthandle180 9 месяцев назад
You change the scale to suit the chord you're soloing over, mostly.

Generally stay in the scale matching the key, but try to emphasize the chord tones from within the scale over each of the chords in your progression...e.g. when you're playing over F, emphasize F, A, & C notes from the scale etc.

John. I’ve learned all these and I’m pretty fluent, but I still have a very hard time making it musical. You however are the master.. I suppose it will come in time

Stay in C pentatonic. But you can throw in notes from the chord that are typically not in the pentatonic. That is where knowing the CAGED system helps. Also hitting the root note right on the chord change really helps.

Give us an update on how how many kids and dogs are in your life. I've lost track over time. This is the best way to manage the pentatonic scale in my opinion. Thanks

John can you pls do a video how you learned the Major scale to cover the full guitar neck? When I was playing piano it was so easy to play every scale but with guitar I don't understand how and what shape I should learn as everyone is talking about modes I want to be able to navigate the full neck like I do with pentatonic scale and traspose to the key I need I hope you understand what I am trying to say😊 Thank you very much Also you should get QC as I liked your tips and videos about tones from QC❤

I get that this is just a lesson on the pentatonic that LITERALLY everyone on youtube has there. I thought you would talk about how YOU traverse the scale. Your style is quite unlike simply learning these scales; where many times you go outside the box which makes it feel like playing real licks. This lesson will only get you to mindless noodling. Many people could be lacking in this too, but maybe you should expect more from your audience. You play really good and your audience is smart enough to appreciate better lessons. Edit: For context, check out Paul Stafford Cook, a humble guitarist who plays in every episode and then breaks down the thought process behind each of his licks.
