This is the story of how the British Broadcasting Company began, powered by Britain’s biggest radio transmitter, 2LO. Discover how radio became part of everyday life in our new Information Age gallery, opening 25 October 2014 www.sciencemuse....
On a foggy November night in 1922, the words ‘This is 2LO calling’ announced the arrival of the BBC. 2LO transmitted the BBC’s first radio programme, marking the beginnings of official, state broadcasting, and a new era for listeners at home.
See the 2LO radio transmitter on display in our Information Age gallery, which tells the story of how our lives have been transformed by information and communication technologies over the last 200 years. Visit www.sciencemuse... or follow the conversation online via #smInfoAge to find out more.

In central southern England if you have a standard receiver the fm dial has become less or no more diverse than 50 years ago (unless one lives within the metropolitan areas of southampton or Portsmouth where there’s community stations) because all there is is bbc national radio , 1 bbc local station BBC Radio Solent ( which is & always has been regional not local ) then there’s 2 monolithic & generic - not local but Regional commercial stations Wave & Sam which have taken over the transmitters of previously independent local radio Bournemouths’ 2CR & Portsmouth/Southamptons’ Ocean Sound / Radio Victory so instead of 2 separate neighbouring districts being geographically independent there’s 2 near identical stations covering the previously separate districts as one . Then all the smaller towns & districts which had new stations which sprang up after 1989 - from Yeovil to Swindon to Chichester have now been swallowed by the generic 3 of Breeze , Heart & Capital. In my opinion all of these commercial stations are a waste of time & May as well become one monolith as how advertising on just Breeze Winchester for example is worthwhile god only knows . Thanks for reading my rant & for your work ! 👍

I worked in Marconi House in the Strand when it was Citibank/Citicorp and was there for a reconstruction of the station in 1982 or thereabouts, it was at the time part of a computer room
