How The Seekers + Judith Durham took Aussie music global | A World of Their Own | Australian Story

In the 1960s Australian band The Seekers took the world by storm when their first three releases went to the top of the UK charts, knocking the Beatles out of the number one spot along the way. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5
Lead singer Judith Durham was the heartbeat of their unique sound, a blend of harmonising voices that saw them become the first Australian band to score a number one hit in the US with the iconic “Georgy Girl”.
In 2019, all four band members - Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Bruce Woodley and Keith Potger - spoke for the first time to Australian Story about fame and fallout.
Now, following Judith’s death this year, her bandmates and her sister speak about her enduring musical legacy and personal resilience.

I'm a man of 76 years and when the news broke Judith had died. I cried. This beautiful voice that was just as good in her 70s had left me. Off course she belonged to us all. What we have left are the outstanding recordings and recorded shows. When I need a lift I reach for The Seekers records. I very often watch their last concert . My eyes just focus on Judith. The Seekers with the unforgettable Judith Durham were just. Wonderful .

@@christine7772 That crystal clear voice never goes out of my head, along with that beautiful face of hers. What a combination. I'm a bloke and I was in tears at the news. We know she wasn't well, but not having her around walking on this earth anymore, was still a shock. Like everyone here, I grew up with The Seekers. I felt for the boys she worked with all those years, and her sister.

Her solo rendering of The Olive Tree in the 60's, really sent me, also The Carnival Is Over, the tune was an adaptation of a Russian song & Take me to the Emerald City I heard on a vinyl. I discovered Northern Lights which I feel could have been used in the background for The Shetland series - would not have been out of place. Will we ever hear such a beautifull voice again, I wonder. She will beautifully haunt the music world for ever. Her mother should be forever proud of her and I am sure she is. Judith despite her health challenges, had a very beautiful voice that will never be forgotten.

Nine days before Judith Durham died, Tom Springfield passed aged 88 unnoticed by the press. If the Seekers had not bumped into him, had their hit "I'll Never Find Another You and many subsequent hits, A World Of Our Own, Georgy Girl, The Carnival is Over etc written by him for them they would probably have gone back on that cruise ship to Australia another talented but unknown pop/ folk band.

I was born in London in 1955 and loved pop/rock music from babyhood. The Seekers really did put Australia on the world musical map. And Judith Durham had the voice of an angel. It breaks my heart that she died too young but also that the UK newspapers reported the story about 2 days before the Australian papers reported it; and the Sydney Morning Herald didn't bother reporting it at all. I was a journalist for over 35 years and the Herald's lack of acknowledgment at the death of one of their own makes me sick. So glad I am now retired.

Wow, that is shocking. Of all Australian singers, Judith Durham seems to be the queen. She was dynamite in a tiny package and so elegant. I enjoy watching the videos of her performing through the decades. Unlike so many American stars, she aged gracefully, no need to be sexy because she was so beautiful and talented. 😢

What a moving tribute and passionate telling of Judith and the Seekers. I was but a small girl in the 60s, but now at 59, I love these individuals who treated the world with such beautiful and wholesome music. You should know that my husband and I are nearing retirement and in a few years will live in the peace and seclusion of my husband's family place in the piney woods of east Texas. It is here that we are "building a world of our own" and we call our place "Fade Away Away Farm" because those words of that song are a picture of how we will live in our senior years. Thank you for your gift of music, and thank you, Judith, for many years devoted to making the lives of so many so very happy through your gift.

@zachmartin1458 Either were The Seekers. I knew about Judy Jacques before Judith Durham at that time. But I'm 7 years younger than Judith. Frank was known on TV mainly as a country and western singer? Not sure, as our family did not have a TV until 1964. Judy should have replaced Durham. She was a terrific gospel jazz blues singer.

Recently passed Frank Ifield had the top UK song of 1962 with I remember you. Being the number one song for two months. Then followed up with several other number one hits even displacing the Beatles from number one in 1963 one month. Next his Up Jumped a Swagman film centred on him in London. Far more successful in the UK than in Australia. If you go back to 1911, the Australian singer Peter Dawson had massive sales of his hundreds or maybe thousands of records starting with his recording if the new Floral Dance. None of this detracts from The Seekers massive success as a group of course.

I am 77 years old and remember them well. The Seekers had such a great combined sound. There was no one quite like them. They would begin signing and you knew exactly who they were.

200,000 at the Myer Music Bowl might be an understatement. The helicopter shots of the crowd were well before the concert before the crowdsv really built up. So that the noise of the helicopter would not interfere with the concert. There is a recording of the announcer, Jeff McComas on stage introducing the whole concert saying that he thought there were 500,000. We really don't know an exact figure as it was a free concert, as were all Myer Music Bowl concerts then, so no ticket check. If estimated from the helicopter shot then it was underestimated.

Thank you from Norway. I am born in 1970 and the first Australian music export I heard of was the oldest Young brother, George, then ONJ, and then AC/DC. This band must have been a great act together with Jefferson airplane, and also the mamas and papas. God bless!

Seekers they didn't give Canada or the USA a chance to really listen to their music in the 1960's all they focus on the UK and New Zealand for all there concerts and reunion concerts and in the 1990's they focus on the Uk and not Canada or the USA and they was just across the ocean from us in Canada too
