First of all, sorry about the audio quality of the outside shots - I didn't bring the new microphone to my vacation since this video wasn't planned. I edited it the best I could - I hope it's ok. Next time I'll have the mic with me!

Finally an intelligent scientist and not a sales person show the real break down of it's design. Thank GOD! Build quality is not looking good but your trying to buy an energy free Yacht. Although it's not the best, it's a break through attempt to drive solar powered living. I'm respectfully all for burning as little diesel fuel as possible. Fuel Cell yachts in 2055 and Ships including all Cargo ships will be fuel cell ships. They produce power and heat make hot water or steam. And the hydrogen will all be from solar and winds and the planet grabs sunlight for all it's energy needs from mostly sunlight. Park your car in the sun and drive home from work for free. Charging stations? What charging stations? Dude they're all gone. Remember all tech that is dead! Hang out as long as you can and see it. S.Y. reminds me of the first Tesla roadster. Where did Tesla go as so does follow quietly the Silent Yachts Silence of success.

It seems like an interesting solution with a lot of reliability and self-sufficiency. Asking a large boat to travel 25 knots, like some other GRP boats, seems like overkill. Having no need of fuel anywhere in the world is a big advantage. Redundancy seems like it could be a real problem; from redundant dingies and motors to generators, hydraulics, and air conditioning.

Love your videos. Question: can you estimate the cost of converting a power catamaran to solar electric to a similar spec of this silent yacht. SY is out of budget for most people. I would love to have a conversation with you sometime.

how fast does it go on solar alone? there is only 25 hp max power? a 25 hp motor would push this thing at maybe 2 knots?

Impressive boat, but I’ll be even more impressed when you finish yours! I work on a coastal express boat in Norway with 6,1MWh battery making it possible to go all electric for 4 hours! In a 124meter ship!! 😃 if you like to come along for a ride I’ll hook you up! The ship is “Havila Capella”

Do you know what the Brusa BSC614 units are being used for? I know they are DC to DC converters but what specifically is their use within the Silent Yachts?
@HeartofGoldLifeboat
@HeartofGoldLifeboat Год назад
The solar array charges a small 24V battery bank that supports the 110V/230V inverter and all hotel loads. The motors run on 400V though, so you need a 400V battery system to power them. Instead of running the entire solar system on 400V (making everything you could touch there deadly), they just connect the 400V batteries to the 24V batteries with the Brusa DC/DC converter. Reduces the number of HV components and makes it possible to use standard Victron stuff.

really excited to understand how this yacht can go blue water. does it have sails of some sort? there is no mast? does it use propellers?
@HeartofGoldLifeboat
@HeartofGoldLifeboat Год назад
Why shouldn't it? Yep, it has propellers - they're powered by electric motors that are powered by batteries. Those batteries can be (slowly) charged by the solar array or (quickly) by the diesel generator. It's fairly similar to how many old (cruise) ships worked - diesel powered electric motors. Difference is, if you're not in a hurry, you can actually go without diesel with this design.
@kirkb3473
@kirkb3473 Год назад
@@HeartofGoldLifeboat I'm in love with the concept, but I would really like to see somebody do a breakdown of what a blue water passage would actually look (fuel consumption, hypothetical speed). Not one where you get pushed by the trade winds across the Atlantic, but one where you might have to do 7 days to windward beating into 1-2M waves and 15-20kts with half the days being overcast like real life situations when blue water cruising might dictate. Would the diesel generator be able to keep up, could it make such a trip, or would it end up taking 12 days and burn 5x times the amount of fuel a sailboat would? I understand the answer might mean, you just would not go in certain situations, but it I've not really seen the proof yet that these can handle blue water real life conditions that might be thrown at it...yes it could get pushed down wind, but you are stuck once you get there?
@dissonantiacognitiva7438
@dissonantiacognitiva7438 Год назад
So 2 leaf motors or Renault Zoe's or whatever is easiest to find I would couple that not with tesla batteries but lifepo4 either blades or cells They are lower power density, but much much cheaper, and they will not start a fire that you cannot contain, they just swell up and die. You have the hull for it. But by the time you are done with the fiber glass we will have some newer stuff. I would also balance this with super caps for the crazy motor draws, it's easier on the battery cells. Graphene supercaps are on the way and something else is already on the horizon

I would design this yacht with second prop shaft on each side that would be connected to generators, so in motion your constantly producing power to charge batterie’s for longer trips and maybe faster constant speeds . Would be grate for area’s where there is cloud cover . Diesel generator would be backup power along with solar for long anchorage’s
@HeartofGoldLifeboat
@HeartofGoldLifeboat Год назад
That'd be a perpetual motion machine - doesn't work in real life unfortunately. The drag (and thus additional power requirement) caused by the additional prop shaft is always higher than the generator output. And no diesel/combustion of any kind on my boat 😁

I’m looking forward to seeing the full deep dive on this!! It looks like they were charged over 90% as a Tesla owner (non-LFP) over 90% leads to battery degradation. Are they thinking of switching or having improved battery management systems, or aren’t they having issues?
@swanny6627
@swanny6627 Год назад
im guessing but its possible that their 100pct is more like 80pct for battery longevity, just putting in more buffer but I don't know. I'd want LFP if i were ordering a silent yacht today.

Am very impressed by the idea of silent yachts and like where they are going, but when I saw this new 60, and how it's built it does not look good enough for the price tag, flimsy and cheap materials and the areas/volume distribution themselves does not look that though throug at all. I still hope the best for this brand and especially that they improve, this was the boat I dreamt of for long time but now I could not see myself spend that much money (if I had it) on that quality (or lack thereof). Imagine you can buy a steel Bering with high capability and safety, stability, durability, redundancy and a high quality interior for a similar price. Sure it is not solar electric but still comes with a hybrid system with large battery banks and solar arrays. Just can't justify the price for this, even if amazing, boat. Am I missing something ? 😅
@petersmith8134
@petersmith8134 Год назад
Maybe you are. Consider the running cost difference between the 2 boats. Silent has lifetime warranty on engines, 25 years on solar panels and 8 on batteries. What would servicing a Bering cost in 8 years?
@SuWoopSparrow
@SuWoopSparrow Год назад
Is there some electric yacht alternative that Im unaware of? Yes, I see 2-3 million $ diesel yachts with maybe slightly nicer materials, but cost of operating is way up, diesel fumes and noise, and more negatives.
@Pixelplanet5
@Pixelplanet5 Год назад
very weird choice to go for Lithium ion batteries instead of the much safer and longer lasting lithium iron phosphate. Also didnt know they have separate low voltage batteries and a high voltage battery. the newer versions of this boat seem to be running on a 48V battery system and do no seem to have a separate high voltage battery. If you check the videos from thesuperyachtcaptain you can see how this has changed to a much better system without so many conversions going on.
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
Look in the the DIY cat link for Na ion battery tech And now theres a new arrival coming Sulpher ion dry cells. Both of which offer major advantages over Li battery chemistry's . Not least of which is cost Wt and safety.
@KMCA779
@KMCA779 Год назад
There's a dozen or so battery technologies that are probably going to be coming out in the next 5-10 years. Some even better ones may take longer or end up non-viable but the future certainly looks electric for boats.
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
@@KMCA779 👍🏼🧙‍♂️ What they must do is choose battery chemistries that are cheap and widely available/distributed. The raw materials need to be common and safer. Rare earth metals and none ferrous metals are just a route to long term failure and further resources gerrymandering by the desperate and unscrupulous. Whatever happens we need to avoid any damage to the deep ocean floor ... we havent a clue what damage to that would do to the planet and what we would litteraly rake up in damage. The big issue is we need to be doing this now.. we have been stalling for at least 30years.
