What Is The Minority Mindset?
The Minority Mindset has nothing to do with the way you look or what kind of family you're from. It's a mindset.
Give the majority $200 and they will come back with a pair of shoes. Give the minority $200 they will come back with $2,000.
Think from the mindset of a consumer and be the provider, that's the Minority Mindset. Don't be the majority. #MIH #ThinkMinority #FinancialLiteracy

Minority Mindset The company i used to work for went bankrupt and so now i decided to open a business and work for myself, and everytime i feel anxious or afraid for trying things this “new” way i watch your videos and they set me back on the right track. The most difficult part after being employed for 10 years is changing your mindset and taking the first step. Luckly for us we have the Minority Mindset to encourage us to do so. Thanks Jaspreet, great content as always.

Minority Mindset well after 8 years of school, 5 years of residency and fellowship taking out $200k in loans I see myself as stuck in the trap. I will just have to keep living below my means. Marginal tax rate on a W-2 employee is not joke.

I definitely think the system is designed for us to fail. im 28 and just now getting into learning how to manage money, investing and starting a TFSA. WHY was i learning calculus, and BIO in High school and there were NO classes on money management, how to do taxes, investing, etc... im curious if anyone had things like this in their education system.. i think kids should be better educated for life and at least we have thing like RU-vid now to help us fill that educational gap.

Another solution: Go to a local trade school for plumbing, electrical, welding or one of the other blue-collar jobs nobody wants to do anymore. Set up your own business and make six figures a year. Trade schools are still cheap, and going into business for yourself entitles you to lower tax rates. Win-win.

Is not a Win win , I was a welder a talented one at that , but when you are a tradesman the bosses in corp treats you lil better than an ants , is not an easy or fun job most of the time and if you did what i did , you would end up risking your life on a daily basis for little more that minimun wage.

Graduated HS in 83, senior year we had a class that taught life skills, every senior had to take it. How to make and balance a budget, info on bank accounts/checking/savings, cost of marriage, cost of pregnancy. It was quite an eye opening class. I also had an elective, basic Business, which covered investing, banking, how to pay for college, stuff like that.

I had an epiphany I was looking at some of my paychecks from my last job and realized that $98 (approx) per paycheck was taken out for taxes. The job that I worked at that time was $12/hr, basically making $96 a day. This amazed me because of taxes I was working 5 days a week but theoretically only getting paid for four due to tax. So, one day out of the week I was basically volunteering my time to go to a job that I didn't like (plus having to spend $18 for an Uber just to get to work) and I didn't realize this until LONG after I stopped working there and everything started to make immense sense. The 'American Dream" really ain't a dream, but I've gone into my own ventures full throttle and I'll never be slave to a 9-5 ever again!

What USED to make America great was the very real possibility for a man (yes, a man), whether born here, or immigrant, to work hard, get an education (which was way more affordable), and move resolutely up through the economic strata to success. For the reasons you mention, and more, that possibility to create upward financial mobility has vanished. Today, those who make it tend to be the fortunate beneficiaries of intergenerational wealth.

Yeah same, I'm nearly 16 and it's kind of lonely because adults are either cynical or dismissive when I try to talk about this. And it seems like I'm the only teenager in my area/who I know that's interested in this stuff and wants to start an online business. Grownups generally just roll their eyes or talk about all the risk when you tell them your plans, without even looking into it! I suppose I'll just have to show people I can do it...

it might take money to feed people, but no where near as much as you might think, Look into Guerrilla gardening, (where you go to some random properties that are overgrown with weeds and not being used for anything else and just plant stuff with out asking, then wait and come back later to those places to get the fruits and vegetables that grew there) if enough people started just buying 10 dollars worth of seeds and all went out and planted anywhere they could in a bit of a co-ordinated effort, you would see a whole world full of food in one season, and some of these plants are long living plants that will generate food for years to come, so then its just down to learning how to use natural methods of rejecting insects and the like, like growing flowers that bees and other flying insects will eat the pollen and make honey but worms and the like (sometimes even the larva of the flying insects) cant be around, as well as chemicals that occur in nature to resist both insects (boric acid, diatomaceous earth, ect for insects, and borax and such for molds and the like) to improve crops that start yielding year after year and no one complains while abandoning those places that the owners notice and start complaining :)

I've been watching these videos for over a year and signed up for the newsletter yesterday. I want to thank you for all that you do to educate people. It is fascinating to learn about how you grew up, and I can hardly wait to get the next email. My parents did encourage me to do well in school, I would be punished for any grade below a B, but they didn't have a certain occupation in mind. They didn't go to college and didn't seem overly concerned about my going to college either. It wasn't until after my son took an interest in photography, and my father encouraged him to study it in college, when I realized that my parents believed ANY degree was valuable. I agree with you. Our system is outdated. I think most people aren't taught financial literacy because most parents and teachers don't understand it, which is why your mission at Minority Mindset is so important. Again, thank you for all that you are doing.

I totally understand the pressure you were under to become a doctor. Growing up poor in New Zealand in the 70s and 80s, I was always told to get out of school early and get a job before all the other kids started looking. At 11, I got my first after school job carrying bags to rooms at a hotel. Then at 14, I got a milk run, delivering milk. At 16, I got my first full time job in a video store. I wasted most of my life working low paid jobs to survive and now most of those jobs don't even exist anymore. Now at 45 years old, I am finally getting somewhere because I am finally doing what I always wanted to do. Follow your dreams. I wish I had, much earlier.

Hey, I'm from the email. I was born from a Polish immigrant family in a town just beside Ustka, both of my parents were college dropouts, my mother doing accounting for 1 year, and my dad doing economics which he dropped out in the 4th month. When I was born, my mother was 20 and my dad was only 23. (my oldest sibling is only 1 year old than me) Both of my parent's parents used to be all alcoholics which would meet up in bars and make then drunk hard while my parents waited home for a beating, they were never guided or inspired by their parents, they were just told: "you'll know when you're older." My Father's dad made a big company on road signs in Poland and he drank it to the ground. My parents were always young friends and they met each other from the past 10 years ironically, when they both went shopping for beer for their parents 🤣. Fast forward bit, at the age of 3 I was, my parents decided they should leave to leave this hole, so they did... In Ireland, Limerick. With no financial, emotional or physical support from anyone. My dad worked so many hours is a milk farmer and would bring me sometimes there. (1st strike of nostalgia crying...) Age my both brothers we're born Age 10, my dad decided to stop working as a farmer and decided to make a handyman company, and I was going very well slowly expanding with customers from around the county. Then my mother started working in a nursing home but she had to do a few years of college for that during her work. I was 13 as this age, I was a pretty smart kid, I was not liked by anyone really in the school because I was different and never did anything stupid and I took care of my self (drinking, smoking, shoplifting) The best subjects for me was Business and Maths, I had the greatest teacher ever in the start of middle school in maths and an ok teacher in the business. I knew that I wanted to become a businessman, I was financially experienced because I sometimes helped my dad with the taxes and help from my sister which also did business, I always dreamed of going to London University of Business or Harvard for bachelor and Masters in one go but that was a long way, I was terrible in Irish (yes that's a dead language we needed I learn for no reason) ok in French and good in English, I wanted to do taxation so I worked really hard with my parents and sister support to bed good grades in those to subjects and somewhat good in the rest, I was getting A or A+ in my top 2 and C or B in the rest and I dropped Irish for polish because why not, I finished doing, Eng, Pol, accounting, economics and Business 😳. And got enough points to go to UL to get my bachelors, in Law and accounting. I am just about to start college in a few months but with coronavirus, I don't know. I am surprised that I and my sibling got so much support from parents who worked really hard for a mortgage for a house worth 250k on 3.5% at age 14(me) and really worked to us all to have the best things and started from nothing.

Inflation isn't just an increase in price according to the CPI. It is an increase in the money supply that weakens buying power, thus requiring more money to buy the same product. Thus, not all price increases - like the skyrocketing cost of education - can be explained by inflation. The higher cost of education is the result of institutional demands and the availability of money in the form of student loans to pay those demands. Apparently, the staff and professors at modern universities require more money to impart information of ever decreasing value.
@mdovell1
@mdovell1 6 лет назад
With respect to education a few things. You can actually test out of up to two years of higher ed with CLEP and DSST tests. Academia doesn't really promote it because...well they make less on it. I'm not saying you can walk out with a bachelors in a month but taking a summer to test out of a semester certainly is doable. I've personally met people that tested out of two years. Also parents can use a 529 plan that pays for higher ed at a locked in rate. If a parent puts it in say ten years prior it can add up. Combining these two has some pretty good power. The median student debt is about 25K. Which is about the same price as a wedding or a new car. At the same point we encourage marriage and cars (cash for clunkers). The best advice to any profession is to talk to people that actually do it. If you want to be a plumber talk to a plumber. If you want to be a teacher talk to a teacher. They know the regulations and market trends going on. Anyone else giving you advise might not be accurate (think high school guidance councilor), might not be timely (retirees) or just flat out could be lies (media).

I’m a new subscriber and I glad I stumbled upon you. Read your email and I think a lot of kids that come from foreign parents can relate so much with your story. I’m Nigerian, and for a LONG time my parents swore me and my siblings will be doctors or something in the health field and because of that I really believed that I will not be successful if I didn’t do anything science related. But I’m starting to realize, my life isn’t limited to just science and my “Nigerian parents mindset”. My dreams, to be an artist, may seem unconventional to them, but I very much believe in it and can make it a reality. And learning about financial stuff are the tools that I need to become successful. Thanks for sharing your story cause I feel more connected to you and know the education you’re giving is genuine and reliable ❤️

I came from a very small town in Texas, with like 200 people tops. I grew up poor, we had water but no electricity and no gas. Hung our clothes on a clothes line and heated our water with a charcoal pit to take bathes. My education was pretty much given to me. They just passed me because they wanted me to graduate. I honestly didn’t learn much in school. Which btw I had a graduating class of 29 people. We had some of the same teachers from when I was in elementary to high school. I had to learn the hard way after I got out of the army that debt sucks, when you get into debt your making the system money. I’m now 25 years old, debt free, own my own truck, with a high interest savings account and cash set aside for emergencies. To anyone reading this, you can do it. It’s not pretty, it sucks but the last payment on a loan or a credit card is the biggest relief ever. Channels like this are pure gold and better than anything you will learn in college or high school

Well, watching this and reading your email I was always told that I needed to go to college or go to work. I chose to join the military and have them pay for my college. With out the military I would not have been able to afford college to get the knowledge to actually pursue the things that I'm interested in. I love space and I love technology. After over a decade from graduating high school I can finally afford to pay for a doctorate in Aerospace Engineering. College costs too much and we shouldn't be reliant on the government to pay for it. Last time we let the government into education look how public education turned out.

Jobs aren't disappearing from automation as much as cost-cutting; the few full-time employees that are left have more responsibilities and benefits have been slashed. Many institutions now rely on part-timers and freelancers who don't get benefits. Furthermore, retirements are now the employees' responsibility and many of them are getting duped into 401K plans (that some employers will match in lieu of a pension). It's all to lower the bottom line. However, I do appreciate this video as encouragement to accept more responsibility in shaping our destinies.

I am so appreciative of this information Jaspreet...sorry if I spelled your name wrong....You have been encouraging me to be that entrepreneur that I know that I can be just for the ideal of Independance to be free to make the decisions according to what I need in my life. I'm reevaluate my thinking of what success is, truly, it's more about health, the ability to make my own decisions daily, weekly, monthly and futurewise. I am also learning that some of the things that I valued were just materialistic versus trying to have a healthy diet and spending more time with those that I love. Now, I don't believe in being broke and then I have all the time in the world either... But you spark a desire with in me to see if I can do something for myself in the ways of earnings and owning. Thank you

My dad also wanted me to be a doctor. A summer internship gave me a book on financial literacy which I read at after I realized first how a CD and a savings account just can't in terms of saving anything after trying to do so for my entire time as an undergraduate student with these methods. Also that experience and reading the book Rich Dad Poor Dad really put it into perspective for me.

The system has definitely failed its people. I'm not going to disclose my age here, but I'm no longer in my 20's & just now gaining an understanding of money. The mantra in my house growing up was, "money doesn't grow on trees" & "we aren't keeping up with the Joneses." Not only did those sayings do nothing for me (& I could never figure out who the dang Joneses were that my mom kept referring to), but it gave me zero insight on what was to come when I started to earn an income. I have had no real financial guidance until recently. Unfortunately, I have student loan debt & I am only at the community college level of my education... Now I know & still have much to learn. It's terrible.

I've watched this video previously but I'm back because of the e-mail. My mom was the same except instead of Doctor, she wanted me to become a Pharmacist. Even if she let me pick my major, she voiced that she wanted me to become a Pharmacist. Because of the split motivation of wanting to do something I like and something my mom wanted me to do, I struggled in school. I felt like I wasn't getting any support when it came to web design and programming, and after a dry spell of jobs, my mom continued to say I should have became... a Pharmacist. I'm now a Pharmacy Technician and I can see the outlook, I definitely don't want to be a Pharmacist. Automation is also catching up and the Pharmacy field is getting over saturated. Big retail companies (you know them) treat their staff like trash, compensate the Pharmacist monetarily but not staff-wise leaving them overworked, and Pharmacy Techs are severely underpaid. I don't say that just because I am one, but because every other licensed professional in the medical field has a lower threshold that I would love as a Tech. I'm now going back to school for something that is more my towards my interests, Radiology. The education doesn't cost nearly as much (< 10,000), time invested is much less and it would still supply an income that would be a bump up from my current status. Just wish I had more support from family, but sometimes you can't make even the closest ones to you happy.

So, I was aware of some of this, by reading a book few years ago "rich dad, poor ..." , however, I am still more drawn into your videos than his work. I had started going to college last year, but it was stopped after 5 months due to a auto accident almost killing me. Now im still recovering, I am older, 39.... but i know that what ive done this far just to get by till my son got done with high school, and try college. Well, real world doesn't work. Taxes are too high, work more hours, and surprise! They take more taxes out of your check.... it truly is a slanted system. I have known that, just been afraid to break free. But, the points on student loans, and housing loans, i didn't know. That, is insane.

It appears that the American financial system was constructed in the form of building wealth through free labor. As this system has evolved, it has changed to get as close to “free” as possible, with wages not keeping up with the rate of inflation. A structure like this doesn’t aim to build wealth for the majority, only for the minority. You have to be willing to step out of structures that were considered “safe” once upon a time in order to create without restrictions.
