It's so interesting how the japanese market tends to be undervalued in light of the western advancements of groups like BTS or Blackpink. JYP has put Twice in a very comfortable position in Korea and Japan and I think as long as he can balance the activities of the Group to sustain their popularity in both markets Twice will continue to dominate in sales etc.

Not to be that person but as much as BTS have western advancements, they also have a lot of advancements in Japan as well. I mean yes their western advancements are more advertised but let’s not forget they also had a sold out dome tour earlier this year as well also they’re probably the most popular/ highest selling bg in Japan from the 3rd gen. Obviously their popularity there isn’t as astronomical as Twice’s I’ll admit. I’ll also admit that Twice's accomplishments in Japan should be given more recognition and praise, because they’re equally as important and vital than western advancements/achievements.

@@christellemba4 I agree with you 100% on the BTS part and it can not be overstated how successful they are globally. It's just that I feel like Twice sometimes gets the "But they're only popular in korea and japan" sentiment thrown at them implying that it isn't that impressive compared to more global groups like BTS or Blackpink while in reality being arguably the top GG in those two very relevant countries is a HUGE thing

@@afamilychowdhury971 It's certainly a possibility although I really feel like this would not be a great move without a serious change of concept. And even then it's risky since their current concept resonates a lot better with the fans in korea/japan and JYP can not afford to alienate them

They're also willing to pay astronomical amounts because the free market is not that ingrained into their culture as it is in the west. Here in the west greed rules and people expect everything to get cheaper and cheaper on top of getting better regardless of any attachment they may have.

yeah they really are... even with their akb48 group who can selling mostly 1 millions copies album a day in every comeback, that's how loyal a japanese, they spend a lot of money for their idol (even 2D & 3D idol/waifu)

JYPE has strategy plan for twice, first established Korea 2015, than established in Japan 2017, and now world tour including in the USA 2019, he’s not rushing just to make a few bucks, he have a very solid plan, and foundation for Twice. Some music labels in Korea should take some notes on how he manage.

Groups other than BTS, shouldnt be forcing theirselves to US MARKET when Japanese market are more loyal than the US. Us loves trend and thats just it, Japan loves to stick to their favorite no matter what happens even if the group disbands. Japanese fans also dont think twice spending money to groups they love than the people in the west. They dont just buy 1 album but they buy lots of it to collect as commemorative gifts. I always am wondering why this certain fandom (not ARMY) always tries to boast how their group is going popular in the US market when in reality they dont dominate at all. Their stuff isnt even sold out and the only platforms theyre rising are those that are free to stream 😂. Everyone should know the importance of money for a kpop group. Physical sales still gives the artists a lot of money and also could be a reliable way of telling if the group is really doing good and if people really supports them aside from those free promo.

NINE MIX JYP did it right now, Wondergirls did VERY WELL in the US market yet they forget that their Korean fans are not that stable, 2PM is soaring so high in korea that they can even compete to suju and bigbang yet JYP did not even invest that much to them, MissA already got the hype and the fandom yet JYP over hype suzy, and Naming her “The JYP princess” and the other members are left behind, but now jyp treat twice fairly even they already name Nayeon as “JYP ace” the company did not over hype nayeon and treat them equally, and I’m pretty sure that when twice try the girl crush concept they can snatch real hairs and not wigs ;)

I do think the Western/American market has a lot more risks in it than in the Japanese market for kpop groups. Just because Japan is 2nd to the US in terms of the music market, it doesn't mean promoting in the US is a lot better. TWICE doesn't need to go "Western" just to prove everyone they're literally and currently one of the best groups in kpop. JYP has been doing a pretty smart and creative way to promote TWICE, seeing their advantages and testing them out. The points you've given has proven just how amazing TWICE has been doing in Japan and is literally one of the most loved groups there.

Generally with kpop groups there is always the more popular members and the least popular ones. With TWICE is different since ALL 9 of them are very popular and have such strong and loyal fanbases. It's not "x and friends" but "NaJeongMoSaJiMiDaChaeTzu". Even tho you can tell Tzuyu and Sana are extremely popular, so are the rest of the members.

'TwIcE iS oNlY pOpUlAr iN jApAn' that's why Twice is the real kpop queens of 3rd Gen despite not having the social media superiority the sales, the tour, cfs, fanmeets, massive fanbases in SK and JPN, stable or even big fanbases in whole asia, stable fanbases in the west w/out official promotion and last but not the least the awards they keep it genuine and we love them for that so please don't downgrade their achievements coz i bet your faves are dying to have what Twice has and btw the girls have lots of fanboys and they're not really the social media peeps most of the time they're the silent fans

Twice seems to be more popular in Asia than compared to places like America, which makes it harder to find peers to talk and enjoy Twice with. Probably because of how limiting the demographic is in America for that type of music, since America tends to favors more sexy and mature concepts than cute and bubbly music. I don't know too much about Twice other than just general info since it feels like they promote everywhere and it's hard to keep up, I've liked all their music so far and it's always refreshing to go into a happy mood after a long day with one of their songs. My only complaint is that I wish there was a well-formatted site for all their activities which can also be categorized by the year and month, and I've yet to find one (I wish this was a standard in Kpop.) Edit: kpop fansites are the best, and I feel stupid for not knowing about them earlier 😅

The calender is the best tip, fans.jyp.com have it, but there is also this one which is very good: twicehub.com/ It puts into the calender things that will happen, MV releases, concerts, TV apperances, TV shows, but also updates it if there has been a suprise Vlive one day, awards they win or similar stuff that they can't know in advance. This makes it easy to know exactly what has been going on. But if you want old tv-appearances then you can check out: twice.fandom.com/wiki/TV_Shows , where it is in chronological order and by year, which makes it easy to see their entire journey so far and they update quite regularly. @jyp_twice_facts on IG also usually keeps up with everything that's happening and updates everyone on it, but it isn't as organized. You also have Twice Globan Fan Group on Facebook where the members actively update everyone.

@@choutzuyu8915 I saw their new MV, I'm happy they didn't do a 360 in music. The change didn't feel rushed and still gave their signature 'Twice' sound, if anything, their current comeback is a good bridge for testing the waters. The only complaint is that I feel at times they had a bit of strain when reaching higher notes, so I'm a bit concerned for when they have live performances considering they promote so much.

As an american i agree that it was smart for Twice not to rush into the US market and focus in Japan and nearby countries. They definitely have more cultural similarities than compared to americans. We have alot of K-Pop fans (myself included) here but nothing compared to Japan and other asian markets.

@@certifiedkpopexpert5730 KPOP is not mainstream here in the US. There are alot of KPOP fans but it's not widespread. I am surprised with the success of BTS so maybe I am wrong and other artists can be successful. I would love to see more KPop success in the US.

I'm so glad Twice is having a world tour soon. July 23 they come to chicago which is 4 hrs away from where i live. Sadly I don't want to go to a concert alone and none of my friends that live near me like kpop like I do.

I agree that Japanese fans are very loyal and this is the reason also why AKB48 and other 48 groups doesn't debut in Korea or promote outside japan becoz in their country only they can sell a millions of albums. BTW I love TWICE, AKB48 and their sister groups

Talk about Loona on your next video! They are amazing and extremely different from any other k-pop group that ever existed, take a look it yourself. Their beauty, vocals, choreography, lyrics, women empowering (btw, their company's employees are mostly women!), story, theories, even their 18 months debut was special and unique!

What I love the most about TWICE in japan is that, it's not just only momo,mina and sana that are populair. The jpns public isn't favoring anybody. The name ''TWICE'' in it self has become a brand in Japan. Even ''Qoo'' a populair jpns drink brand are using TWICE as models for commercials. Like even right now people are standing in line at vending machines. Also the way warner japan built twice's empire is amazing. They went from hi touch to small veneus to dome's. They didn't rush their populairity. I'm confident to say that TWICE are the biggest kpop group in japan right now.

@@ejibadlit9197 well not trying to offend bts or army's but most of bts sold albums are by their very dedicated fandom. Also twice was the best selling korean act in japan last year and candy pop was the best selling single from a korean artist. Twice still gets invited to music station like, everytime they release something and they got invited to NHK (the biggest festival in japan) two times. So looking at how the public reponses. I think twice has the higher ground.

twice is now 4 years into their 7 year contract. wondering what the members are planning to do afterwards. their next album 'fancy you' is a step in a more sophisticated direction (and written by mutafukn bep!). hope to follow twice for many years to come.

First of all thanks for making this video... People really can't even imagine how big this is. Not only Twice is the first kpop girlgroup to do a dome tour but as you said only few kpop artist can do it (TVXQ, BigBang and BTS), even for Jpop artist it's quite hard. Thanks for making the clarification that this is a dome TOUR not just one stop... the difference is huge and some people don't get it. JYP and Warner have done an amazing job... They really took time to build an amazing base for Twice in Japan. It really looks like they are looking for longevity not just some quick bucks as other companies and artists does. Right now with this dome tour and looking at their popularity it looks like they will continue and even add more dates or maybe add the Fukuoka and Sapporo dome in the future. Looking at Twice development in Japan I really can see them doing 1 day at the Nissan Stadium but well they will really need to work hard. Regarding the west and Japan I feel that Kpop will always be a thing in Japan whereas in the west it looks like a trend. The huge reason why kpop groups are charting or trending in the west is because of their fanbase (mainly BTS exposure is attracting people to kpop since 2016) more than general public. Kpop already had some amazing moments in the west with Wonder Girls and PSY but still kpop never became something relevant for the general public just a trend. In relation to money and looking at "Mirae Assests" for JYP and YG youtube revenue was for all 2018 4B won for JYP and 8B won for YG and Spotify pays 0.0038 per play. Twice with just 2 days at Tokyo Dome made around 10B won just with tickets (we are not taking into consideration merch, albums (#Twice2 had an increase at each dome stop), broadcast at Tower Records Live and Cinema's) obviously expenses matter but still I'm pretty confident that the dome tour outsold all annual revenue from streams on Spotify and RU-vid. Concerts, CF and albums really bring a lot of money and right now for Kpop Japan is the best spot to atleast get concerts and albums. For example Red Velvet isn't that big (compared to Twice) in Japan but still with 5 dates they had over 40k attendance and looking at their America part for 8 dates they had over 24k attendance. It really shows how Japan is key for kpop groups and how much they can win there. Right now I feel like Twice should keep their focus in Japan, there's no need to expand to the west even more when they can't speak english and they will get a bit of attention that will fade in some years rather than money (compared to Japan). The only group that really are making a real impact in the west and making tons of money is BTS. Each time Twice goes to the Kohaku uta Gassen + constant promotion their sales increase and they stablish even more their position in Japan, looking at the translation of an article twitter.com/sanatanslator/status/1113454078921543680 it really looks like Twice isn't a "kpop group" in the eyes of Japan they transcended, they broke that barrier or atleast they will in the near future as TVXQ and BoA did in the past. If nothing bad happens I'm really confident that next year there will be a even bigger dome tour and their sales are going to increase even more.

@Negmer I should really talk to you before doing a next Twice video! Those Twice stats in Japan are very impressive indeed. And I totally agree that Twice should concentrate in Japan, as it's really not just a passing fad (like a lot of K-pop in the US, for instance), but has long sustainability in the country. It's also great that they transcended past "K-pop group" in Japan.

Thank you for the vid, but I have to correct something, twice is the first kpop gg to do a dome tour. What kara and snsd had were dome concerts. I feel like you are taking away snsd’s part in the hallyu wave. Kara was bigger at first, but snsd did give them strong competition, both were invited to kouhaku, both sold 1M and both had dome concerts. Now for the japan expansion, we had to give it to jype japan/warner music japan, because they were very patient with twice. They could have just capitalized with their korea success, but instead they waited for almost half a year, studied their targeted demography and then debuted twice. Equiped with a viral TT, twice could have had a dome concert just to flex, but they still started with showcase, then arena tour then dome tour. I really think by saying the reason why twice is popular in japan is the jline is not quite right. Why? Because it was TT that put them in a map. The gp didnt care to ask first if there are japanese members in the group. And honestly what sets twice apart with other kpop acts is the fact that the gp-the non kpop fandom, knows about them. And if we are talking about the jline, we need to acknowledge the important of tzuyu. Tzuyu is essential to push that asia/multinational group that warner has coined from the start. She is perfect for the part, universally accepted as gorgeous and she’s Taiwanese. Japanese have favorable impression of taiwanese more than any of their neighboring countries. Lastly, I dont think twice start a new hallyu move, they are doing their own thing just like bts. Izone will of course do great because they are aks affiliated, but no other group had the same impact with twice in the gp market. Lastly, twice’s japan success is super important for jype. Because it means they will have steady revenues from japan. And what makes investors happy more than anything? Stability

Agree on SNSD, both Kara & SNSD were immensely popular in their era in Japan, no other kpop girl groups came close. I don't think the video said that Twice is popular because of the J-line; i think what he meant was that it was easier for Twice to break into the Japanese market because they had the Jline, and non kpop fans did take more notice of the group or were interested to know more as well when they know that there were Japanese members in the group that launched the viral TT. Agree that Tzuyu's Taiwanese background helped as well for the Asia girl group title and her visuals as usual brought in a lot of curious people whom became Onces. I think Twice did help in this new Hallyu wave as they are well-accepted across age groups and genders; many Japanese articles of newer Kpop GG debuts in Japan mentioned Twice as well in the content.

@Bijou Bijou Very true that SNSD / Girls Generation did their part in Hallyu. For this video, I wanted to concentrate more on KARA, but I can see it how I missed SNSD too. As for the J-line, of course it's not the only reason Twice is popular in Japan. But I would say it's a big part, as Japanese listeners often times relate a lot more with K-pop singers that either speak Japanese or are Japanese. Tzuyu's likability in Japan could have been explored more, I do agree. I would say Twice is helping to reignite the Hallyu in Japan again. You can say that BTS is doing their own thing too, but in the end, they're tied to K-pop and the Hallyu. It's not a bad thing that Twice is doing that either, as the Hallyu has stagnated in Japan a lot when I visited Tokyo from Seoul.

While I do see your point, I think you are forgetting that Sana's ShyShyShy is what made them popular in the first place. Twice wasn't doing well until Cheer Up when Sana's ShyShyShy went viral. So while TT was important and is definitly their more popular song in Japan, Cheer Up was their start. Also while Tzuyu is popular and was the most popular in Japan at their debut, she is not the most popular member in Japan currently, Momo is, Sana is 2nd, then Tzuyu and then Mina. When looking at Twice's member ranking based on searches by area in Japan, Momo has almost 40% in every big area. J-line is no matter what essential to the members successfully communicating with japanese fans, they aren't the reason they are popular, but they play an essential part when it comes to promoting there.

Popsori I agreed that Twice reignite the Hallyu waves in Japan again. After KARA & SNSD, the Hallyu waves in Japan is kinda dead. Look at how many kpop group made a debut right after Twice made their Japan debut in 2017. RV who debut first in Korea also made a debut in Japan after Twice open the door towards Japan despite having SM reputations in Japan from BoA, TVXQ, SNSD etc..

As a asian myself I would be more comfortable in Japan than USAin the beginning.Plus no group after Bts has made it big and known to the general public like them. US market may give the group the popularity but what about the revenue like how Bts sold out stadiums and won awards. People can’t like a grp virtually and when it’s time to support with money then back off.Therefore in my opinion first having a strong fanbase back at home is really important and JYP is doing his best in terms of promoting and supporting Twice. JYP debut wonder girls in US market back then and totally focused on US market and ignored Korea and Japan when they failed in US and came back they did not get much attention from Korean fans. BUT JYP learned something from this incident now with Twice firstly he focused on Korean market then japanese market with cute concepts as these countries like cute concepts and cute things after when they decided to do world tour in USA they released fancy which is more like girl crush concept and in their world tour concerts you can see mostly their performances are based on sexy concept. I think Twice will dominant in US market after Japan and Korea.

Haters will always say it's just Korea and Japan. But they are forgetting that Twice is a kpop GG, at the end of the day they will sing in Korean and their main market is Korea. They have supporters all over the world, maybe not the mainstream but who needs people who only jump on bandwagons. Their fans act as one, Twice being Twice and JYPE leading them. I love how everything is stable and organized. Once, Twice and JYPE have a strong bond that it can't be shaken that easily. Others can trend all they want but Twice will always secretly dominate the real numbers.

Heck, even if Twice only had fans in Korea and Japan, that's very impressive. Having dominance in the 8th (Korea) and 2nd (Japan) largest music markets is very hard to do. Of course, they have ONCES all over the world, but JYP is handling Twice's marketing strategy very well thus far.

‏JYP is a really smart company and has figured out how to capture the Japan market. Twice sings Japanese songs in addition to Korean songs, and it is not just that they translate Korean songs into Japanese, and also JYP has created a completely Japanese band for the Japan market.I think the Japan market is more important because in Western countries people do not buy full albums and they watch videos more through RU-vid or through music services, but in Japan people buy the band's full album and spend a lot of money.

I feel like the company made a very smart move. They want the fanbase in Asia to be strong before aiming for Europe/US. After all, even if they are not that successful, they will know that they always have their fans back home. I love how instead of being fast and daring, they start from their close neighbour. I do feel like when there is Japan to focus on first, it is kind of daring to go straight for further markets. I loved the video and would like to watch more Twice content

JYP learnt his lesson. Look into the wonder girls and how they where outselling SNSD and Kara back in 2007/08 5 to 1 and then Nobody came out and he shipped them of to America where they toured with the Jonas brothers and slipped into obscurity after there last big come back as a five piece. JYP didn't make smart moves with Twice, he just learnt his lesson from The Wonder Girls because he did try to push them into the Japnese market around 2010/2011 but at that point it was to late the Asian market was already being dominated by SNSD, Kara, 2ne1, Brown Eyed Girls and T-Ara. So just be thankful that JYP didn't fuck it up for Twoce like he did to The Wonder Girls

Japanese music market is the second largest in the world in terms of it’s size. Most of the Kpop entertainment companies’ foreign revenues majorly comes from Japan. This is the reason why SM has been diving into the Japanese market since the Boa generation. When tvxq was at the top of the kpop industry they alone earned 3billion dollars of sales revenue from Japan annually. From this you can see how big there market is. This is the reason why JYP created Twice to target Japanese music market.

Wow! honestly, color me impressed! I just discovered your channel, but I think more Kpoppers should know about your channel. That said, there are a few points that could be researched better. For 1) Only blackpink is (trying) to be BTS. Which is another YG mistake. Not only because the group is just riding the hype train and has no real fanbase here like BTS. But also because blackpink will no more succeed here, then the last fluent English girl group Universal tried to shove down Americans throats... SNSD back in 2012. You'd think YG would learn from history... 2000+ Kpop groups have debuted and 1 has managed to honestly break into the western market. For anyone who might read this... East Asia buys 86% of the Kpop sold every year. BTS being the only exception. All of the biggest names ever in Kpop owe their success to promoting in either Japan and China. By proxy, so do their labels...

As for the saying of "K-pop groups trying to be like BTS" (paraphrased), I should have reworded it to "a lot of groups want success in the US, like BTS." I do feel that the barrier to break the American mainstream is so difficult, as you mentioned with SNSD back in 2012. Even PSY's "Gangnam Style" was a viral hit for awhile, but was really a passing fad in 2012. So true what you say that East Asia buys 86% of K-pop sold each year. Insane numbers, indeed. Popsori You are absolutely right, I even forgot SME's bid to make Red Velvet more westernized with their latest release... and there have been many other groups/artists over the years. There is a real barrier here in America that is almost tangible. I attribute it to racial, political, and cultural divides. To a certain degree these reasons also apply to Kpop's resistance in both China and Japan. That would be an interesting, but controversial topic. How something like music that should not have any borders, is used as a weapon in the GEO political battle of ideology. Examples of this are : ● 1) TWICE (unofficially) banned from promoting in Taiwan because the territory is being contested under the "One China" policy. Even though the island is one of the group's strongest and richest fanbases. ● 2) Certain political powers in Japan always doing everything they can to defame the Hallyu wave as some type of invasion by an inferior race who seeks to undermine the Japanese way of life. Anyway, I look forward to more of your factual content, Like your breakdown of Kpop consumption. It really is refreshing to see these types of informative videos, among the sea of youtube channels who only post gossip and third party hearsay.

@@theninearemine8499 TWICE aren't banned from promoting in Taiwan, nobody has banned them from doing it. They are just not doing it because they don't want anything to happen to Tzuyu. Tzuyu is one of 9 members, but hugely disproportionate in influence in Japan, SEA, TW, and China. I look forward to the day Tzuyu and Twice can do a dome concert in Taipei and the surrounding cities.

Popsori made a good point why Japan is/should be a good market target, its the culture similarity of South Korea and Japan. US may be a lucrative market but its also BIG and saturated with a lot of other content. Plus the fact that KPOP is still a foreign concept on western culture. There is loyal KPOP fans(in US) for sure but just a small amount compared to Japan. KPOP is not a foreign concept in Japan and is more socially acceptable. I say socially acceptable because people do tend to frown on or make fun of ppl who like it or show support. Not saying its like this in all of US but ive only liked KPOP since 3-4 yrs ago and before that I was one of those people who just look at the people who go crazy for KPOP and could never understand it. Now my friends look at me with the confused look that i used to give to others. What I leaerned from the few years Ive liked KPOP is that KPOP is more than just a genre its a culture.
