As a pianist, I am happy to see Cavendish Pianos keeping the craft alive, but I don't believe they are the UK last piano manufacturers there is John Broadwood and Sons, centuries old company who made pianos for Mozart and Beethoven, they have a Royal Warrant and still make pianos in the UK to the best of my knowledge.
I think they mean, piano makers who are originally from the UK . Steinway and sons are actually from Seseen, Germany. They expanded their business to New York, Hamburg and the UK later on.
I remember when I bought my piano about 20 years ago, just a nice upright with a great tone. I ended up getting a used piano, bc the man selling very expensive new ones told me that the used one he had was much better built than the new Asian imports he sold. He said that their soundboards weren’t solid wood, but were sheets of plywood glued together, making the sound “ugly.” He also said that nearly all new upright pianos have plastic rods attached to the hammers, not wooden rods, so the flexibility of the hammers was completely different and affected the way the hammers responded to the pressure of the keys. So my used, 100% wood piano (which was cheaper than the new ones by $10,000) still sits in our living room, and I’ve been incredibly happy with it. I’m not sure how that place stayed open, but I surely appreciated the salesman’s honesty!
I am one of the few technicians, tuners and dealers still working. Can't tell you how much I love the piano. It is a dying art. Wish these guys all the luck. Edit: Wow! Thanks for all the likes!
I wish somebody would teach me the ways of the craft😩 I love music and play a few instruments myself but I was always more interested in how they were made rather than how they play. Maybe one day🤞🏾
I've been a technician for almost 50 yrs now and fear the loss of maybe the finest instrument ever. AMAZED at how young this shop's workers are - HOORAY FOR YOU ADAM COX!!!! You can buy a cheap one from Taiwan or China or Korea but there's NOTHING like one where craftsmanship is the #1 thing. That's why just saying names like Steinway and you think of quality first. Down the road I pray we also hear much more of Cavendish. WELL DONE GENTLEMEN!!! STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN!
@@iAmDislikingEveryShort "shop" Meaning: 1. a building or part of a building where goods or services are sold. 2. a place where things are manufactured or repaired; a workshop. maybe you should google first? LUL
@@ferio8019 what a buffoon... There'll always be shops of pianos made somewhere else in the world.. The video is about the last standing piano manufacturer in UK..
As a concert pianist I appreciate this craft so much a poor piano is really tedious to work with and can distort what’s supposed to be a lovely performance.
I had a schoolmate who's mom was an auctioneer, and I once saw a self playing piano sell for 32 USD. It was from the late 1800s and the only problem was that it needed a tuning and maybe a repainting
Its a beautiful thing to follow your heart ... It shows in the quality of the pianos you create. Stay strong and teach as many as you can your craft. Loved this video. Thank you for your time and sharing your art. It was just food for my heart.
Was in the trade for sixty odd years DANEMANE ZENDER AMONGST OTHERS back in the early sixties none of the big company’s invested in the future ,they never saw the threat coming from abroad ,just too complaicent,in fact one firm I worked for even sent piano parts to firms in china ,spinning yarns like we’ve brought some of your pianos and arrived damaged ,could you send us a new. Frame or the action is beyond repair can you send us a new one ,2 years later at the Frankfurt exhibition there was some very familiar looking pianos on display, they soon found a way mass producing pianos !
A soundboard doesn't amplify the sound of the strings, it transduces it. You need a source of power to have amplificaiton. Source : Pianos Inside out. Will find the page if needed
They should try making crazy pianos people suggest on RU-vid or something, I'd totally watch them make a really cool pianos you'd normally never see in stores. Just a suggestion as a little side thing to get some extra revenue.
I sure don't have the money or space to have piano like this and as said in the video keyboards became and still are a great alternative. It's certainly worth it to keep high quality production of these going though.
Not very bright are you... And your Math is about as good as your knowlege of production. They are working on several pianos at the same time, though each one will be at a different stage of manufacture. Because something is hand-made does not mean only one pair of hands working.
I love this and good for you mate! I bought an Alesis v49 what a pos and terrible. You can’t even get updates from them to use on a Mac. Point being miss the simplicity of a good old grand piano. And if anyone can get that work on a Mac educate me 🤣
I've never played the piano, but I've played a musical instrument similar to it: keyboard. I still can't play it as good as an average celebrity. Just one damn note and 'twas enough!

I see the young technician is left handed. This must be very difficult because everything concerning the construction and use of a piano is based on right handed use.
I bet the "factories in Asia" meant "factories in China" 🤔 so far, after watching a few of your videos I now realized for every authentic and organic products some countries make, China makes same product only using synthetic materials.
Gotta change with technology thats when we fully grow and our future genenrations things nowi we think valuble will be free giveways in future its like that
As went our piano manufacturing industry, so, later, went our car industry. No other country in the world lets its industries so readily fall victim to foreign competition.
Still in Indonesia, Piano was very expensive musical instrument. Only wealthy family can buy the non-electric piano. Sad thing, Yeah. Very sad fact. I still want to have 1 piano in my family home.
It’s kind of sad to see how old traditions are doing way like I searched up a non-electric Rock Tumblr because I’m pretty sure it would be cheaper I did not find a single one every single Rock Tumblr would cost like $500 if you do not know where the rock Tumblr is it’s something that makes the rocks smooth
I doubt Yamaha or Kawai will have lower quality, it is a Japanese cultural value to have reliable, well built products, like Toyota and Honda. Other Asian pianos, especially those manufactured in China aren’t super good quality for the most part
They have the economies of scale on their side. Tbh their quality is superb and the CFX is arguably better than Steinway. Kawai too especially the Shigeru Kawai series.
@@tohahawlader671 yeah, and I hate it. I mean, if you can't compete with cheaper and "better" Competitor's product then just shut up, no need to bitching around about your hand build authentic mesmerizing top quality crafted piano.
AS A YORKSHIREMAN I wish you the greatest success, keep at it, the world IS changing and people are starting to appreciate quality over the disposable and cheap...
@@jaredspencer3304 It's changing though because EVERYTHING is too cheap now and breaks almost immediately. People are paying hard-earned money to get the best they're able to and these days, it's not worth the materials it's made out of. I feel like that's why I a lot of people are shying away from super cheap, disposable garbage.
I was forbidden to play the piano. I grew up wondering if they will ever let me play the Piano that no one is using. I would sneak a peak under that heavy wood and touch some notes. Of course the whole house would know everytime I do it. Problem is It wasn't our house. It was the neighbors. Thank you for sharing this. I hope they never stop making it. EDIT Thanks to everyone whonliked this
Blaming their decline on cheap manufacturers in Asia, particularly Japan, is disrespectfully inaccurate and unnuanced. Yamaha and Kawai have been rwo of the most reputable piano makers in the world for decades.
@@MoonParkCello Alert, alert! We have an SJW in the comment section! Remember, Bryan: you don't have to be offended at every little thing. 'Made in China' is a byword for cheap and low quality ... why? Because their products are mass produced by slave labor and are, therefore, cheap and low quality. Low quality Asian products are everywhere. And yes, they do take over the market because they're more affordable, forcing higher quality products to decline. That's how economics works. It isn't racism to point it out, and it's stupid to whine about it.
@@lauraandrews1676 my "made in China" redmi android phone underwent accidental falls and got crushed multiple times when I fell asleep on it. It has a few cracks on the screen but still works like when it was new. What do you mean?
Cavendish is not that last factory in the UK, there are others, including Steinway's in London and you can't forget the rebuild and restoration workshops all over the country
Steinways are made in New York or Hamburg. They only have a showroom in London. However, I thought Broadwood was still making pianos unless they have recently gone bust.
@@karldelavigne8134 Broadwood are still working. They recently moved to North Yorkshire. I was shocked a company so rich in history was literally on my doorstep. I believe the company has changed hands a few times.
Successful people don't become that way overnight. What most people see at a glance-wealth,a greater career, purpose is the result of hard work and hustle over time.
I have been playing piano since I was 3 I am no 17. Let me tell you there is a huge difference in sound between a cheap China mad piano and hand made piano. This is something I really appreciate
I started playing when I was 8 since my parents didn’t want me to become a musician and forced me to wait a bit. When my music teacher told my parents that I have a talent and deserved to play on a real piano, we went to the piano restorer in town to choose an instrument. I picked one out that has a louder sound and somewhat heavier keys compared to grand pianos, which makes my arms hurt when I play very fast for half an hour XD It cost us 3000 CHF but it was well worth it
6:15 Japanese pianos are not cheap low quality. You are talking about Yamaha. There's also the south Korean Young Chang which also does great quality pianos.
As soon as things are designed in japan, they simply become great quality, affordable products. Low quality isn’t part of the equation to tell you the truth.
K.Kawai are made in Korea and are Extremely high quality and definitely not cheap. Kawai concert grands are up with the very best, and by that I mean Bosendorfer, Bechstein, Fazoli, Steinway and Yamaha.
I hope people dont end up misled and think piano is dying. There are over 20 million pianists in what? America? I dont remember if it's the world or america but 20 million people playing an instrument means it's not nearly dying.
@@Dnlrmrez traditional hand-made piano making to be specific. But also pretty much _every_ Traditional hand-made craft is on the way out, they just can't compete with mass-manufacturing on price
