Today, I went fishing with my uncle, on a boat, in the Wisconsin winter. While I like fishing (he literally lives for it) there were moments of intense boredom I haven't allowed myself to experience in what feels like a decade. I honestly didn't know how long we would be out there, and of course, I didn't want to ask him either because I didn't want him to feel like I wasn't enjoying my time. I actually was. We were out in nature enjoying each other's company. I was just mostly, bored, since I caught about one fish per hour. I caught 10 fish. 11 hours we ended up staying out there. Barely even looked at my phone because why watch TikTok when there's Bald Eagles flying around and shit? I thought a lot out there. And now at home, I see this video and it explains a lot about why I felt so "peaceful" afterwards. It seems facing and embracing boredom can do wonders

This video speaks to me, even if I never understood how someone can be bored. There is simply too much to do and wonder about. Nevermind books or music or learning and all those wonderful things on offer. I've sat and just stared at the moon and been amazed, not realising 2 hours went by. I've sat in my garden and passed hours just looking and thinking about the leaves and blades of grass and how they came to be. Even if i am stuck in a 'boring' work meeting, i will think about how everyone in the room is sharing this moment and how insane it is that our paths all came together at this point in time. I am awestruck everyday by simple things and do not need much in my life to feel fulfilled. Everyday being alive and healthy and experiencing this world is a success to me despite what society defines you should be doing

I think it would be mindset and situation. Like where I live its kinda shitty you can barely see the stars due to light pollution and the moon isn't even always visible so you look at nothing but a purplish void...The area itself is mostly buildings with little nature and of what there is you are gonna be disturbed by people with dogs. I don't even have a private garden. When I lived at home I used to sit on the roof with my cat and we'd watch the stars sunrise and sunset, those were genuinely good... As for work I can't help but endlessly think how pointless it is, the people barely consider your time valuable and thus waste hours of it doing nothing, theres very few jobs where you can work at your own pace. I wish societies definition of worth could be ignored but it affects a degree of your knowledge, comfort, food, experiences, friends, living conditions, job opportunities and if you had a bad job all the latter get worse. I just can't enjoy this world or moment without thinking of the next. Your lucky to be able to push past it all. I hope you always keep your freedom of your mind and go down this type of path.

Feeling that you always have to be doing something is an illness - relaxing in the moment , just an observer of everything around us and sitting in the middle of it as a small part, without trying to change anything or photograph it, document it ………. I have looked at the stars from when I was a child and I am now 69. Looking at those distant suns with their own planets circling them , imaging what is possible out there and how insignificant I am in the face of the universe. I am nothing but a momentary flash, I do not matter- none of us do. It has been said that we die twice- the first time when we physically cease to exist. But then once again, when the last person that remembers us dies. Enjoy the ride- that’s all this is.
@DoritosBurger
@DoritosBurger Год назад
I wouldn’t really call it an illness it’s just the result of capitalistic conditioning. They purposely implant ideas in your mind so that you would behave and act in ways that benefit corporations. They want you to constantly be doing things because it requires you to spend money. Notice how nobody is telling you to go camping or hiking and enjoy nature, it’s all just things that involve spending money in the city. They want you to feel like you are missing out and that unless you do what they say you’re "wasting time". The truth is everything could be seen as a waste of time, it’s just a matter of perspective. I personally find the idea insulting because even just being alive is an exciting and beautiful thing, how you choose to spend the time you are given here is up to you and there is no right or wrong way to do it.

Definitely needed this video. Expatriated from my country a few years ago which I thought was impossible, and have been living a simple, fortunate life. At first everything was fine and exciting...but then the novelty wore off and I started feeling...guilt? every second of every day. Years ago I would've looked at my current life and thought "god I wish that was me" so why do I constantly feel guilty? I've still got a lot of work to do to extract my true self and thoughts from the distortions that have taken hold the past two decades with social media and all that.

Wu Wei, "NonDoing", isnt about doing nothing. It's about realizing that you shouldnt change your natural passions; your favorite skills and leisure were already right for you. No need to appease everyone else by DOING something else. NONDoing is a more peaceful path. ( Ex : I love to dance, so I dance often. Knowing I dont have to change it )

It really made me reflect on how we perceive time and how we choose to spend it. It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and feel like we need to constantly be on the go, but maybe the opposite is true. Perhaps, since our time is limited, we should slow down and simplify. The idea of stripping away all unnecessary spending of time and only putting back what we truly want and need is a powerful concept. It's important to determine what we believe is a valuable use of our time and only focus on those things. Thank you for sharing these thought-provoking ideas.

Been retired going on 5 years and have embraced complete boredom. Now I do have a few volunteer organizations that provide me a weekly social "fix" but otherwise, will hang out in my home that I worked hard to remodel and pay off. What I have noticed is those folks I do come in contact with look tired and older than their stated ages. I listen to all their activities planned, issues with the spouse or family and topical subjects going on in the world like I was a practicing psychologist mentally using a pad to take notes. The best part of every exchange comes when they ask what I do. My response? "I do absolutely nothing and live an uneventful, boring life." The initial look on their faces is priceless and the follow up questions like; "No, seriously, what do you do for fun." OR.. "You must do something to pass the time." adds to the enjoyment even more. My current lifestyle hardens back to when I was a child and approached each day as a new adventure. No stress, no debts and plenty of food to eat when hungry. Life is good...

I used to think the happiest people were the ones who had the biggest legacy. It turns out the happiest people are usually the ones with no legacy at all. They come to peace with themselves, their family, their friends, and the world around them. They don't need admiration of others, fancy objects or a flashy job... All they need is the people around them and simple things to be happy

I've been thinking for a long time that this is one of my main Problems that I never spend a second without distracting myself with my phone. The thing is that the instant I don't listen to a youtube video or Music or Netflix I start to think about death and my infinite non existence and I get so terrified that I need to pick up my phone again to distract myself and I don't know how to get out of that. My fear of death is controlling my whole life and pretty much ruining it too.

best advice for me is to train yourself to desire what you already have. You have two wolves living inside you, one bad, thinking about death, and one good, thinking about wonders, you become the wolf you feed the most. Do things that feed the good wolf, it will go better because this wolf will outgrow the bad wolf, who will then fear to come out.

I enjoyed the dive into the concept of time in our lives, specifically the contrast drawn between spending time thinking in a focused way that is true to oneself, and thinking in a distracted or preoccupied way that lacks quality. It does feel like a luxury to have the time, money, and energy to focus our minds as such.

I just found these videos and while they are really gray and thought provoking, it makes me realise that I’m wasting my life away and I’ve tried to make things right, and just can’t. Life is long enough, like stated in this video. It’s just , we waste it for 1 reason or another. Imagine being 20 years old and travelling to many countries and staying for 2 years , then move on to the next. By the time you’re 30 you’d have had so many incredible experiences.

I've always linked the two philosophies together, wu wei and stoicism. I'm glad someone else made the connection. I also made the connection to 'Hakuna Matata', the popular Lion King song. When people question or admire my apathy towards problems, I simply tell them that they too wouldn't worry if they followed my philosophy. 'What is your philosophy?' Trying to keep a straight face. "It's Hakuna Matata, it means 'no worries''."

After acceptance of monotony. The realization of people who constantly chase "fun" or any form of external-stimuli is quite noticeable. It exudes the fact that they are actually trapped into their minds and are afraid of relaxation. Because relaxation or equanimity reveals you to yourself, your past traumas within you, that has been suppressed. Don't be afraid. Because, after you accept all the aspects within you; looking far out into the distance, with ease is so rewarding. More rewarding than any external-stimulants you have ever known.

If anything, I haven't really felt bored lately but I have been moping a lot and feeling depressed on a regular basis. There is nothing anybody can do about it though. I've got to want to do things that will consistently benefit my well-being. I haven't been trusting myself a lot lately and a lot of my friends have had a deep level of sorrow for me. But again, I don't think it's anybody's responsibility except for mine to get myself on the right track. I have felt alienated by a lot of people but I have had to distance myself from others that have hurt me on a emotional and spiritual level. It's nothing I feel like i have been able to completely surmount...but I am doing my best to not allow certain types of exterior forces and vibes to get the better of me. Lately I feel like it's been happening a lot more than ever before, and I hold myself to highest level of accountability possible...no matter how much certain people and things frustrate me sometimes.
