I've thought the same thing. It would symbolize that the people are unstoppable and defiant to terrorists' cause.

Im in North Central Indiana, im a conservative, ive never had enough money to be a Republican, but i disagreed with DJT, the terrorists will not win if we rebuild, that whole area is on bedrock, and once were all dead and gone, someone will get the idea to rebuild it anyway, why not do it now, or at least start it, and build it tough like NYC , never to be toppled again !!! While it's true that other buildings were damaged by falling debris, what still baffles me to this day is how no other buildings in Manhattan suffered a) catastrophic damage, b) uncontrolled fire and c) complete collapse on 9/11 except coincidentally World Trade Center 7 -- which was 300 feet away from the North Tower. Even the Deutsche Bank Building which was much closer to the twin towers than even World Trade Center 7, only was damaged, but there was no fire nor collapse. The same is true of the World Financial Center 2 and Verizon Building, which were both in relative proximity to the twin towers, yet didn't suffer fire and collapse. It was just World Trade Center 7 on that day. Even more striking was how Osama Bin Laden, a qualified civil engineer, stated afterward that his intention was never to fully collapse the twin towers, moreless the entire World Trade Center Complex. Given that statement, it would be like winning the Powerball lottery without even entering the lottery. Statistical anomalies like that are almost unheard of in everyday life, yet it all came to pass on 9/11.

Why didn’t they build like before?

I wish that the WTC 2 site would match the Freedom Tower but take tons of inspiration from Libeskind, and make it ever so slightly taller at 1787 to commemorate the signing of the US Constitution. That would really complete the NYC skyline.

One WTC isn't very cool, it's completely meh. Libeskind's design and the compromised design with the other guy looked good, this one just looks like a generic blue shape.

They were designed that way so they wouldn't be destroyed if hit by aircraft. It was a major design consideration.

The core of the towers was held by 47 steel columns, with elevators, and three emergency stair wells. The first tower that was hit, was hit straight on, destroying all the stair wells. The second place hit the tower at an angle and destroyed two of the three stairwells. The steel columns were bent and shrunk by the heat. After approximately an hour of burning, the steel could no longer hold up the upper floors. Thus, resulting in the fall of the towers. The towers were actually built to withstand hurricane and earthquake strength.

I agree. I really would've liked to see his full idea for the grounds implemented. I was honestly disappointed as soon as the part in the video came where they started throwing his ideas out. :/

I understand his 1,776 feet symbolism and his entire design, but eventually those buildings would be obscured by other skyscrapers and the sight line from the site to the Statue of Liberty would be gone. The current tallest building on site is huge and blocky from the street level, which I don’t like, but it is also serving the original function (and more) of the two main towers.

Libeskind published a timely autobiography entitled "Breaking Ground". It was about his humble beginning and career until being chosen for the commission of a lifetime. I'd hardly call the effort egoless, despite the underdog "David vs. Goliath" theme. Still, it was easy to gain a liking for the man, and it's bittersweet in retrospect- since his ideas were only partially implemented.

Visiting as a tourist was incredible. The timeline of the NYC skyline you see on the elevator was powerful. I was born in 2001 so I never got to see the towers, but it was still emotional seeing how quickly they fade in and out.

Sans the pools, they aren't strong though. The originals by Yamasaki definitely were. These? eh.... First, the site feels like key chain architecture. Nothing really working together. Just each structure tacked on as another item. Second, Freedom Tower is a half effort attempt akin to when you were in school and you had to sit through another student's definitely half baked presentation. I mean it's a building. It's like every other building, VE'd (being polite) out of it's mind that any symbolism is post rationalized poorly and incredibly weak.

I walk by it every day on my way to work. Once in a while I stop and look at couple of the names and imagine who they might have been. Someone pretty similar to me, maybe born about 20 years earlier than me for their life up to that day being similar to my life now. I get carried away imagining it, and then when I stop and remember where I am, I am met with just the sound of nothing but the water running. It's a strange feeling.

What's amazing is I came up with the same idea for the reflecting pools surrounded by names in late September of 2001, long before any proposals were even being drafted for the site. I still have my original sketches that I made while at work over lunch break. I was inspired by the Vietnam memorial in Washington D.C. with the walls of names.

You could see it as the only nice thing to take away from that exact time is that lives like your own were being created and filled with potential. It’s a real shame what happened and I recall the day well, although I live in a different country. But your birth is sort of the antithesis of that provided you are a good person! It's pretty messed up for someone to say they're sorry about your birthday. It's not like you had any say in the matter. I remember watching the towers fall live on TV while my brother and I were getting ready to catch the bus for school. It was an intense event, but I never understood why people put so much stock in the date. It was a trajedy, but it doesn't require reverence.

I'm on a Minecraft survival server and I am building a 1:4 scale of the New World Trade Center complex. That's the design I'm building, it's simply the best looking from the outside and that's what most people will be seeing, unless you work there or take a tour. The max you're seeing is the lobby. The server and irl public will admire that in the skyline way more than the other designs. Simple as that. (Btw I'm currently in the pathway for Architecture, and will hopefully get into an Architecture program in a year and a half

Gotta love how rich people only care about profits and willfully neglect what the people of the country wanted-something to show how the American spirit can't be so easily swayed. Libeskind more than deserved to have his vision put into place, as an artist, I LOVED how he put so much love and compassion into his design and even included the height to be a specific number reflective of American history. Been to the memorial and honestly, only the water memorial sight meant more to me than the new tower. The tower now feels devoided of anything worth showing emotion, which is extremely sad that many other Americans I spoke with there during my time all felt the memorial waterfall meant more to them. Silverstein is just a fine example of being out of touch with reality and only seeing dollar signs-which is repulsive in the wake of a national tragedy.

I personally don't like it. I think it looks ugly and totally out of place. First time I seen it I was like WTF is that 💩. Not a fan whatsoever of what they've came up with and done with the area.

I recently visited the site and I was absolutely stunned by every aspect of the site, particularly the Oculus station. It is a truly unique and iconic landmark in its own right, does well to indicate progress and is stunningly beautiful in person.

I am also happy this memorial scheme was implemented. A close second would've been the tree-filled park over the footprints, perhaps drawing memory even further back to the island's pristine state long before today's megacity. Also, I think there would be a powerful message of regeneration and timelessness of nature. As it is, the abstract and starkly beautiful reflecting pools that drown out surrounding noise are as sensitive and inspired as anything ever regarded in reverence and respect.

Unfortunately the new one world trade really doesn’t have anywhere near the presence that the twins did. I have feelings about the Twin Towers similar to yours. I'm an old ... whatever. I watched those towers get built. I grew up within visual distance of the construction. I marveled at them. In the day, they were the largest buildings in the world. They were more than symbolic, they were iconic. As such, I am also glad that it worked out the way it did, a memorial and a new iconic Freedom Tower and a new World Trade Center complex. It took a long time, but Job Well Done.

The One World Trade Center is a nice building, I’m always in awe every time I pass by it, whether it be on a train, or walking past it. And also, I send my condolences 💐.

1 WTC is depressing and a sad reminder our country became irrationally paranoid and afraid ever since 2001. It’s base is a closed off concrete bunker, it’s curtain walls are just boring glass, it has less floors-the top are mostly mechanical, it’s observation deck is lower, the roof is only a parapet and the ‘spire’ is a skeletal antenna that helps the tower cheat and claim tallest building in the U.S. And it’s dumb symbolic height of 1,776ft is now a cap on buildings afraid of crossing it for silly touchy reasons. Meanwhile China has numerous buildings over 2,000ft but not in the U.S…

I’m also not saying simple is better but it works for the freedom tower for me. The twin towers and the freedom tower are both way more simple than the Empire State or Chrysler but I’m not sure if they’re better.

I think it's very pretty too, and the entire memorial site, pools, and museum use negative space to really make you feel the loss... My mam still looks for the towers in photos.

Everyone loves those towers now that they aren’t there any longer, but they got plenty of justified criticism while they were still standing. The original was architecture by committee, worse, by government committee, worse, by the combined committees of two governments. Quite frankly, the only thing you missed was a hell of a view. The buildings themselves were a wreck long before 9/11.

Your not the one paying 10 million a month to rent a rubble heap. I don’t see how waiting years is going to honor the victims, the way to honor the victims is to take actions that would prevent something like that from happening again. If the public wants to have wait to build something they should not expect a individual to bear the burden of their decision. It would be like if someone crashes into your house during a party and kills some people, you want to rebuild your house as quickly as possible but the victim’s families are preventing it. If the victims families want to have that type of decision they should provide the occupants of the house somewhere else to live.
